Thesayingthatoppositesattractismanytimestrue.ButIfeelthatpeopletendtofriendthosewithlikeorcommoninterests.
TherecentPresidentialelectionisagoodexam-ple.Manyrelationshipsandfriendshipsendedduetopoliticalargumentsanddifferingideals.Ievenun-friendedsomepeopleonFacebook,manyofwhomIhaveknownforyears.
Myopinionthatbirdsoffeatherflocktogetherisillustratedbythemanydifferentclubsyoucanfindinanycommunity.Fromcar,camera,sportsoralumniclubs,itisnevertoohardtofindagroupyoucansharecommoninterests.
TheManassasWarrentonCameraClubisoneoftheseclubs.Ikickmyselffornotfindingthemearlier.Ican’tcountthenumberoftimesIwantedtogotakepicturesofsomeeventbutcouldn’tfindanyonetogowithandinsteadstayedhomebecauseIdidn’twanttogoalone.
MWCChas80pluspeople,manyofwhomwilldecidethegrasscanwaittobecutorthehousecleanedandtakeoffwithagroupofpeopletophotographareenactmentortheCherryBlossoms.WithsomanyeventsgoingonintheWashingtonD.C.areaitiseasytofindsomethingtoshooteveryweekend.
Butonethingmanymembersofeverycluboftendon’tthinkaboutishowdothingsgetdoneandorganized.Committeesandboardmembersarethecoreofanyorganizedclub.Theyarevolunteersandtheyarethepeoplethatkeepeachclubgoing.Theyorganizethetrips,scheduletheworkshops,keeptrackofthemembershipduesandpublishaweb-site.
Withoutthem,nothingwillgetdoneandtheclubwillfail.
IhavebeenandamamemberofaboutfiveclubsandIhavefoundvolunteeringtohelpinsomewayisbothrewardingandagreatwaytomeetmanyofthemembers.
ThisNewsletterisasmallthinginthegrandschemeofthingsbutIwaslategettingthisoneoutandfeltguilty.Idoubtmanyofyouarewaitingeachmonthforthistohityouremail,butIstoodupandsaidIwouldtakethisonandIdon’ttakethere-sponsibilitylightly.
SoIhopeyouenjoythisissue.Wehaveagreatsto-ryfromthreeofourmemberswhovisitedaparrotrescueorganization.Thisstoryisclosetomyheart.IhaveaQuakerParrot,heisasmallparrotandwilllivetobeabout30yearsold.ButIknowtherearesomanypeopleouttherewhogetaparrotandhavenoideatheyareabouttobringa3-yearoldchildintotherehomesandonethatwillbe3forthenext50-60years.Researchanypetbeforeyougetone.
IalsohaveaveryimportantannouncementabouttheClubBylaws.TheBoardisproposingachangeandwillaskthosemembersattheJunebanquettovote.
Speakingofthebanquet,ifyouhaven’tpurchasedaticket,pleasedo.Itisalotoffunandyoucanseemanyoftheawardwinningphotosyourfellowpho-tographerstookduringtheyear.

AfewphotographyfriendstookatriptoLongwoodGardensinMarchtophotographthelargevarietyofblueflowersthatfilledtheconservatory.Itwasabso-lutelyBlueteful!
Sincewewereinthearea,wedecidedtostopattheRufflesandFeatherexoticbirdsanctuarylo-catedattheNorthHanoverMallinPennsylvania.Afewoftheseexoticbirdswereavailabletophotographatlastyear’sNatureVisions.
Priortoarriving,westoppedandpickedupafewbagsoffoodtodonate.
Myoriginalthoughtwasthatwewouldgotothisbuildingwherethebeautifulbirdswouldbesittingonpercheswaitingtohavetheirpicturestaken.IwassurprisedwhenIrealizedthebirdswerelocatedinabigspaceatthemall.Theamountofspaceandvisibilityforthiscollectionofmacaws,cockatoos,andotherparrotswasgreattoseeandthespacewascompletelyfilled.Manyofthesebirdsareontheendangeredspecieslist.Infact,theco-founderanddirector,GilStern,informedusthattheyarelookingtoexpand.
Itwasn’tuntilIwalkedtowardsthebackwhenInoticedthatmanyofthesebeautifulbirdsweremissingfeathersandwereinvolvedinmanylevelsofabusefrompreviousowners.Gilexplainedtousthateverybirdintheroomwaseitherabused,neglected,unwanted,surrenderedortortured.
Manypeopledonotrealizethatthesebirdswilloutlivethemanddonotmakeasuccessionplan.Itwassadseeingtheconditionandhearingthehor-
rificstoriesthatsomeofthesebirdswererescuedfrom.
RuffledFeathersisanonprofitorganizationthatprovidesrescue,refugeandsafetyforparrotsandotherexoticbirdsintheVirginia,MarylandandPennsylvanialocations.Gilstatedthatthereisarescueevery10hoursonaverage.
Thisorganizationisfullyoperationalthroughdo-nationsandvolunteers.Thereislittletonoadver-tisementandtheonlywaypeopleknowaboutthisplaceisthroughwordofmouthandvisitingthemall.It’samazingtoseethelevelofpassionandcarethatGilhasforthesebirds,especiallysincethepublicawarenessisnotashighasitisfordogsandcats.
