FLUOROPOLYMER PRODUCTS

The Application:The Pickling Process cleans and prepares the surface of steel and other metal products for subsequent operations such as cold rolling, plating and galvanizing. Scale, rust, stains, and other impurities are removed through the use of acidic solutions, including Sulfuric, Hydro-chloric, Nitric and Hydrofluoric Acids.

The Problem:The highly corrosive solutions, wide thermal swings and mechanical shocks cause heat ex-changers to fail prematurely and foul often. Met-al heat exchangers are susceptible to corrosion and will experience a reduction in heat transfer capabilities due to scaling and fouling. Graphite heat exchangers exhibit poor resistance to both fouling and thermal/mechanical shock.

The Solution:AMETEK Fluoropolymer Heat Exchangers provide the ideal solution for heat exchange needs for Metal Pickling operations. Our Heat Exchangers provide unmatched resistance to corrosion, thermal/mechanical shock, and dif-ferential expansion. The original heat transfer efficiency of the exchanger is preserved by minimizing external fouling and internal scaling without surface passivation.

The Fluoropolymer Advantage:AMETEK is the original, and has been the leading manufacturer of Fluoropolymer Heat Exchangers for over 50 years. Our extensive, global experience in the Surface Finishing Industry allows us to provide customers with experience and expertise needed to meet the ever-changing challenges in this competi-tive market. AMETEK Fluoropolymer Heat Exchang-ers also offer increased productivity, efficiency, contamination reduction, value-in-use through savings in plant maintenance, and improved heat exchanger service life. All units feature our proven, unique honeycomb structure, which is inert to virtu-ally all types of chemicals and provides a lightweight, compact bundle design. Fluoropolymer Immersion Style Supercoils are backed by AMETEK’s excellent quality, service, and support.

The Application:The Surface Finishing Industry conducts Plating, Coating and other Chemical & Electro-Chemical processes, which improve the surface appearance and resistance to wear, abrasion and corrosion for many types of materials.

The Problem:Maintaining an optimal bath temperature in these processes is crucial. The chemical baths used in this industry are designed to chemically attack metals. Heat exchangers made of metal will corrode and experience a reduction in heat transfer capabilities due to scaling and fouling, leading to higher maintenance cost and shorter service life. Electric immersion heaters have higher operating costs, can cause fires and do not have the ability to cool.

The Solution:AMETEK Fluoropolymer Immersion Style Heat Exchangers, known as Supercoils, provide the ideal solution for heat exchange needs in Surface Finishing operations. If desired, heat-ing, cooling, and/or maintaining temperature of a bath can be achieved with a single Supercoil. Supercoils provide unmatched resistance to corrosion in a wide variety of bath composi-tions. The original heat transfer efficiency of the exchanger is preserved by minimizing external fouling and internal scaling. Supercoils can be made with FEP, PFA, or our proprietary “Q” res-ins. “Q” provides twice the heat transfer rate and enables the overall length of the Supercoil to be decreased to fit smaller finishing tanks.

AMETEK Minicoil Heat Exchangers made with fluorocarbon resins are used primarily in small metal finishing baths where corrosion is often a problem. The chemically inert, well-known nonstick characteristics of fluoropolymers resist corrosion and fouling, and minimize scale buildup. The inherently high electrical resistance also helps prevent short circuits and stray currents in the plating baths.

AMETEK offers 12 Minicoil Heat Exchanger models designed specifically for plating bath applications.

Adequate ventilation should be used where fluoropolymers are heated during tube repairs. Flu-like symptoms may occur from exposure to vapors evolved from fluoropolymers at very high temperatures, up to 800OF or from smoking materials that contain particles of fluoropolymers. Symptoms pass within 48 hours and are the only adverse effects observed in humans to date. Unheated fluoropolymers are essentially inert and are nonirritating to the skin.

AMETEK Reactor Coil Heat Exchangers—made with tubing of fluoropolymer fluorocarbon resin—are used for heating and cooling of corrosive fluids in a wide range of processes and applica-tions. The well-known non-stick characteristics of fluoropolymer resist corrosion and reduce fouling. AMETEK Reactor Coils are designed for immersion directly into the process vessel, and are most efficient when agitated in the process solution. During agitation, the flexing action of the coils helps reduce fouling and dislodges deposits that may have formed. This and other unique design features make the Model R500 Reactor Coil ideal for crystallizer applications.

This information set forth herein is furnished free of charge and is based on technical data which AMETEK believes to be reliable. It is intended for use by persons having technical skill and at their own discretion and risk. Since conditions of use are outside our control, we make no warranties, express or implied, and assume no liability in connection with your use of this information. Nothing herein is to be taken as a license to operate under or a recommendation to infringe any patents.

Fluoropolymer resins are generally considered inert to most chemicals. Under certain conditions of pressure and temperature, or combinations of chemicals, fluoropolymer tubing should not be used. Please contact AMETEK for discussion of your specific process to be certain that our products are appropriate for your intended use.

AMETEK Slimline Coil™ Fluoropolymer Heat Exchangers are widely used in the metal finishing and chemical processing industries, and are especially suited to batch and continuous steel pickling applications. The inherent non-stick characteristics of fluoropolymer resins resist corrosion and fouling, extend heat exchanger service life, and improve value-in-use through savings in plant maintenance costs.

AMETEK Q-Series Slimline Coil™ Heat Exchangers are constructed from a proprietary resin compound that improves durability, and pressure and temperature capabilities over conventional coils—high performance that enables AMETEK Q-Series Slimline Coils to handle many steam heating applications without desuper-heating. In metal processing, high efficiency AMETEK Slimline Coil Heat Exchangers also save energy, reduce waste, and cut processing costs by minimizing acid consumption and spent pickle liquor disposal.

AMETEK Slimline Coil Heat Exchangers are available in Q-Series as well as FEP, in U-shape as well as straight configurations ranging in lengths from 4 to 16 feet (1.2 to 4.9 m).
