4A's Spec-tempular Presentations In 4A, we have been learning all about the Ancient Greeks. Most recently, the children took part in a two-week long homework project in which they had to research and make a 3D model of an Ancient Greek temple. They then brought the temples into school and showed them to the class. The children had to present their temples along with the information they had researched and explain how they made their temple. There were some fantastic recreations of the world famous Parthenon (Temple of Athena) in Athens, the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, the Paestum in Italy and even some examples from the Valley of the Temples in Sicily. If you get a chance, pass by 4A's classroom to see them on display along with the beautifully presented information pages. I am so proud of all of the hard work and dedication the children have shown in making these temples and thank you so much to the parents for their support in these projects! We cannot wait to see if we can see some examples of Greek architecture around Rome and examples of art inspired by the Ancient Greeks in our forthcoming trip on Thursday 14th! Stay tuned for photos of that! Miss Armitage

History Visit to Florence On the 12th November, our Year 13 IB History class, together with Year 12 visited Florence to enrich our knowledge and understanding of the Italian Renaissance; a topic which we study for Paper 2 and 3. We had a guided tour by an art historian of the Uffizi Gallery where we admired paintings which we have studied in lessons such as Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ and ‘Primavera’. We also visited the Accademia where the highlight was Michelangelo’s Davide. It was interesting to have first-hand experience of a city which we have spent time studying; the streets are all filled with buildings from the period such as Brunelleschi’s Duomo and we saw places associated with the Medici family such as their palace. Not only did we have an enjoyable time filled with culture and art, but the trip will also be very useful for our final exams. Thank you to Ms Chauhan and Mrs Nanni for organising the trip. Mia Binella, Mathilda Liello, Beatrice Pistola

“I enjoyed the trip to Florence because it was a new experience for me as it was my first time going there. My favourite thing was Michelangelo’s sculpture of Davide because the representation of him was not only of his physical attributes but his mentality-which I found fascinating! Glyne Michelo

“Firenze was a thrilling ride through the pinnacles of time, going from the Ancient Romans to the Renaissance. The most intriguing part for me was seeing the ‘Man with the Medal’. In its simplicity, it portrays power, wealth and the roots of modern society. A trip to remember!” Mattia Liello

“What I liked most about Florence was the fact that by only walking through the streets and soaking up the atmosphere, I could immediately notice the cultural diversity of the city. I also enjoyed drinking the hot chocolate.” Bachir Diallo

“I thought the trip was extremely useful. The guide gave us very interesting facts and went into depth about art and the Medici. I believe that our visit will help us to have a better understanding of the Renaissance and give us an advantage for the IB exams” Ester Santini

Year 12 and 13 students were an absolute credit to the school on their recent study visit to Florence. They were engaged and motivated as they absorbed the history, culture and beauty of the city, which is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance. I hope that the visit has helped to bring this fascinating period of Italian history to life and will help them with their studies and forthcoming exams. Thank you to the students for a wonderful day and to Mrs Nanni for accompanying us and sharing her artistic insights!

It has been another week where I have been impressed with the efforts and attitudes of staff and students in the senior school, with the preparation for the end of year performance of CATS now underway and the preparation of our year 11 and 13 students for their mock examinations next week alongside the normal classroom studies, the school is a hive of activity.

In addition the staff have been voting on the entries to the academy photography competition in preparation for the NACE arts competition at the end of November. A competition for all NACE schools to enter in a range of categories for different ages with a joint theme of “Dreams”. The photography section is for students ages between year 10 and 13. Our final 3 entries were voted on this week with the final result being:

3rd place Carlotta Bakke in year 10 2nd place Irene Tropea in year 11

In 1st place Mia Binella in year 13

Well done to Mia, her picture will now represent Southlands in this category in the NACE interschool Arts Competition.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. I especially hope that year 11 and 13 will be well rested and ready to do their best after their preparations for their mock exams, an important two weeks, especially for year 13, in their applications for university. We remind all students to please move around the school between lessons quietly to avoid disturbing the exams and give the students their best chance of success.

Boost your immune system!!!

Start off strong with a healthy breakfast! A good breakfast provides energy and will help keep you alert and attentive in class. Avoid highly sugared foods. They leave you feeling tired soon after eating. Drink plenty of water. Water is the best fluid to stay hydrated without the added sugar found in some juice and soft drinks. Also do not forget to drink milk or alternatives with vitamin D and calcium. Eat a nutritious and yummy lunch. Choose foods from all the food groups. Different food groups supply our bodies with energy. Eat colourful fruits and vegetables everyday. Make healthy choices from the daily menu. Get plenty of sleep!! Sleep is very important for your body. It is important you sleep between 8-10 hours per night. When you sleep and important process of restoration and strengthening occurs so your body can challenge a new day!
