AUGUST 2017
Dear Parents and Caregivers
I do hope that you have all enjoyed
having some down time over the
holidays and perhaps the chance
to have some family time together
Unfortunately the weather has not
been kind and we all look forward to
the welcoming of Spring and some
drier and warmer weather
As we head into a very short Term
3 it is important for senior girls to
once again reflect on the advice
and comments written in their
school reports - an opportunity for
all girls to be reviewing their goals
and setting new ones This is the
term that rapidly disappears and
as I reminded the girls at the end of
last termrsquos Assembly it is important
to maintain focus during this time
Healthy eating exercise and sleep
are all essential elements to being
able to finish strongly
This term we welcome 19 new
students to our school and hope
that they will soon feel part of the
Rangi family
WELCOME TO OUR NEW STAFF

SOUTH ISLAND JUNIOR NETBALL TOURNAMENTTop Four placing for our 9A team
A successful tournament for our top junior netball teams in the first week of the term break saw the 9A team place in the top four in the South Island - a wonderful achievement for this group of young netballers
With five wins from pool play the 9As took on Otago Girlsrsquo in the Quarter Final and came away with a solid win earning a place in the semi-final against St Hildarsquos The weather took a major turn for the worse and the semi final was played in atrocious conditions with sleet and hail during the course of the game The team went down by four goals coming within one goal in the last quarter The conditions continued to deteriorate and eventually the remaining games ndash including the play off for 3rd4th against Villa ndash were called off meaning the Rangi team finished 3rd equal This is an outstanding finish for our team and a positive sign for the continued development of Rangi netball
The 10A team also competed in the tournament and played some great netball developing with each game Scoring bonus points from two losses in the early rounds of pool play kept the team in the top 16 for the next round of play Day two had a similar feel about it with two more close losses and a draw A couple more goals in either game and the team would have been playing for 9th-12th however this was a tournament of near misses for the 10As and resulted in the team playing off for 13th-16th position As with the Year 9 games the games for these positions were ultimately cancelled ndash but not before our girls had taken to the court in terrible conditions making memories in the sleet that will stay with them for some time to come The records show us finishing 13th equal
The girls in both teams were wonderful ambassadors for Rangi Ruru and played with pride and passion in every game It was exciting to see both teams develop their game play and of course it was tremendous to see a Rangi Ruru team in the semi-final of the Year 9 grade The teams are back into the Championship round of Saturday netball and will be looking to emulate their success at this tournament as they head towards the semis and finals at the end of August

SAMOAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCEDuring the July holiday break ten Year 13 Rangi girls had the most incredible experience immersed in life in a Samoan village on the island of Savaii
Touted as a communitycultural experience the girls have a taste of life in Apia and in a remote Samoan village They are chaperoned on the island of Savaii by representatives from an organisation known as WIBDI (Women In Business Development Inc) and experience first hand how the people in this local village utilise the natural resources to produce an income for their families and for their village
This year the group spent four daysthree nights in the village of Salailua on the south coast of Savaii They were split into small groups and hosted by the local families ndash living in their homes and functioning as part of the family They learnt about weaving Siapo making (tapa cloth) how to extract organic coconut oil from the coconut and even how to roast cocoa beans to make coco samoa They quickly came to realise that most industry is still conducted using traditional local methods
The girls learnt that life for these people is still very primitive with many of lifersquos ldquobasicsrsquo achieved through labour intensive methods They were won over by the generosity of the people who shared their warmth and laughter freely and were happy with few material possessions
The girls experienced two differing church services cultural performances and took part in cultural activities with their host families They formed connections and made memories that will last them a lifetime

The excitement as the holidays
drew near was tangible the girls
were tired having worked hard all
term and equally so every member
of staff I do hope and pray that our
girls enjoyed a time of relaxation
and rest
The first week certainly let us down
with the cold the snow and the very
low temperatures I was staying in
Okainrsquos Bay with my sister expecting
sunshine and long walks on the
beach with our dogs sadly we were
snowed and iced in Initially I was
a wee bit peeved with the weather
however this feeling soon changed
as we all sat in front of a Pioneer
Log fire What an amazing amount
of heat that fire pushed outhellipthe
cold soon vanished from the house
and we were toasty warm Being inside
warm fed and with my lovely dogs
allowed me time to reflect on what a
busy term we had how much sickness
there was and just how blessed we
all are that we are able to keep warm
There are many in our community who
are not as blessed as I or we We are a
country in crisis that is in terms of a
lack of affordable housing I can vouch
for how cold it gets in the winter in
Waiouru when sitting in your gun pit on
sentry dutyhellipnumb toes fingers frozen
breath icy and you begin to see things
in the darknesshellipmoving shapes I can
just imagine my fear and loneliness if I
had to sleep in a doorway on a piece of
cardboard So if you can support our
girls with the collection of items for
the lsquoWomenrsquos Night Shelter this term it
would be appreciated This support
