The Price of Kindness by Fr. Bill Hao

Fifth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2015

The 1998 movie version of Les Misérables was not a musi-cal, but a dramatic adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1862 classic novel about a man forced into hard labor for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread. One of its memorable scenes was the conversation be-tween Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) and the bishop (Peter Vaughan) shortly after Valjean was caught by the police and brought back to the rectory with the silverware he had stolen. The bishop never accused Valjean; after the police left, he said to the bewildered Valjean, “Don’t forget, don’t ever forget; you promised to become a new man.” Valjean replied, “Why are you doing this?” The bishop said, “You no longer belong to evil. With this silver I bought your soul. I’ve ransomed you from fear and hatred. And now I give you back to God.” This scene from Les Misérables teaches us that an act of kindness can bring about a life-changing experience. Valjean never forgot what the bishop did for him and it changed him into a de-cent and caring man. A kind act is never forgotten; certainly not by God. Is there an opportunity for us to be kind and patient with someone, or to be generous and gracious? Would we take the chance of not being self-righteous if it can possibly change some-one else’s life? There is a price to be paid in being kind to others, but it is worth every penny! Let us reflect on what Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10:42-45; Mt 20:25-28).

PILGRIMAGE FOR IMMIGRANTS Wednesday, April 1

The seventh annual Holy Week Pilgrimage for Immigrants is an

act of faith, solidarity, and hospitality. This interfaith pilgrimage

through Georgia is a prayer with feet. The Pilgrimage prays that

our faith communities and nation will search for ways that favor

a spirit of solidarity and justice. We walk by a faith that

transcends borders and bids us to overcome all forms of

discrimination and violence so that we may build relationships

that are just and loving.

Volunteers are needed to walk, pray, take pictures and videos,

act as drivers, etc. Donations of water bottles are also needed.

Contact Mark Bracken ([email protected]) if you

are able to donate water or be a volunteer.

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS Starting Tuesday, April 14

Living Your Strengths is a small-group program utilized by

Catholic parishes nationwide. Meeting once weekly for 5

weeks, you will discover and explore your top talents through a

series of exercises, personal reflection, and facilitated small

group discussion, based on the evidence-based StrengthsFinder

assessment tool.

The next cohort will be offered Tuesday evenings this spring,

from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on April 14, 21, 28, and May 5, 12 in the

Lower Level. The cost for the entire program is $15. This

includes the book Living Your Strengths: Catholic Edition,

assessment code, and all materials.

To register, contact Elizabeth Figueroa at

RESPECT LIFE

Please join us in our

prayerful, peaceful

efforts to offer hope and

practical assistance to

women who are

considering an abortion.

We pray every Saturday,

On Monday, March 9, while the students were enjoying a day off from school, the Faculty and

Staff had a retreat at Holy Cross Church. After an energetic morning of team building, and a

fabulous lunch, we set to work assembling personal care bags for Mercy Care to distribute to

homeless men in the Atlanta area. Each bag contained a number of single-use items including

soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush and paste, and a razor. With good humor and great

efficiency we were able to assemble 500 personal care bags which were delivered to Mercy

Care later that week. We closed our day with Mass celebrated by Fr. Javier and Deacon Bob.

FORMACION EN LA FE

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

ACTIVIDAD DE LA SEMANA

Elija una de las siguientes actividades

para seguir reflexionando sobre las

lecturas del domingo:

Plante semillas de flores en pequeñas

macetas, y decore las macetas con

carteles de nueva vida. Riegue las

semillas con cuidado. Observen crecer

las semillas en familia. Relacione este

misterio con el misterio de la muerte y

resurrección de Jesús.

Hable acerca de las maneras en que hoy

está llamado a “perder su vida”. ¿En

qué sentido no está dispuesto o tiene

miedo? Ore por el coraje que necesita

para resucitar a una nueva vida.

Elija una estación del Via Crucis para

rezar todos los días. Durante la oración

familiar, conversen sobre lo que ocurrió

en esa estación y relaciónenlo con las

dificultades que hoy enfrentan los

miembros de la familia.

Choose one of the following activities as

a way to further reflect on the Sunday

readings:

Plant flower seeds in small pots, and

decorate the pots with signs of new life.

Water the seeds carefully. Watch the

seeds grow with your family. Relate

this mystery to the mystery of Jesus’

death and resurrection.

Talk about ways you are called upon

today to “lose your life.” In what ways

are you reluctant or fearful? Pray for

the courage you need to rise with new

life.

Select one station of the cross to pray

each day. During family prayer, talk

about what happened at that station and

relate it to the difficulties family

members face today.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Jeremiah 31:31–34; Hebrews 5:7–9; John 12:20–33 By the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we are longing for the alleluias of Easter. We

continue on with our Lenten practices, though, knowing that the disciplines help

to root our lives in Christ.

We receive a message of hope in today’s First Reading when we hear the Lord

tell Jeremiah that he will write his law in the hearts of his people. “I will be

their God, and they shall be my people,” he says. In this phrase we see an

intimate union born from the love of God. It is a love that Psalm 51 attests is

filled with compassion and goodness.

Jesus’ words in the Gospel point ahead to the Cross. We hear that Jesus is

troubled and that he will be lifted up. Though anguish fills his words, hope also

is within them. Not only will God be glorified when the hour has come, but

Jesus “will draw all people to myself.” Just as the reading from Jeremiah speaks

of union with God so does the Gospel. We find in this reading from John that

the Father will honor those who serve and follow Jesus.

As Easter nears, we might consider whether we strive to live in accord with the

Jesus portrayed in the Letter to the Hebrews. Jesus, St. Paul writes, prayed with

reverence, learned obedience through suffering, and was made perfect. Do we

seek to be made perfect? As the Second Vatican Council document Lumen

Gentium notes, all are “called to holiness” (39).

No sólo

santidad” (39).

March 22: Create your own endowment fund

You can create a fund in your name or honor loves with a beginning investment of $5,000. This and other

gifts to the fund will be tax deductible. You can determine if the fund will benefit the parish in general or a

specific ministry in the parish. When the endowment reaches $25,000 it will pay out to the purpose stated

in the contract. This is a wonderful way to leave a Catholic Legacy, get a nice tax deduction and help the

parish for the future. For more details, contact: Diane Duquette, the Director of Gift Planning at the

Catholic Foundation of North Georgia: 404-497-9440 or email [email protected]. Visit the Catholic

Foundation website to learn about additional ways to create a Catholic Legacy.

SECOND COLLECTIONS

Next week’s Second Collection will benefit the Holy Land.

The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is

“not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral,

charitable, educational, and social works which the Church

supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian

brethren and of the local communities.”

GIVE SACRIFICIALLY The mission we share in Jesus’ name is that of bringing the Good News to the world. The Good News

is the message of undying, sacrificial love. We are created in God’s image, meant to be a reflection of

Jesus who is perfect, generous self-giving. Like our Lord, we must open our hearts to the will of the

Father, who desires that all human physical, spiritual, emotional, and material needs be met. We know

that such needs will be met through the sacrificial generosity of good and faithful stewards.
