    TheDecember floods haverenewedcallsto remediateearthquake-damagedland andpushaheadwith raising floorlevelsinlinewiththeChristchurchCityCouncilsFloodManagementPlan.

    Landaroundthe westernedgeoftheestuary sank byabout10centimetresafterthe 2010and2011earthquakes.Much ofthe landaroundtheareawasdeemeduninhabitable bythe governmentandsubsequently red-zoned.The

    sunkenlandmakesthe areamorevulnerableto flooding,and withhuman-induced climate changeraising thesealevel,expertssayeventssuchas theDecember27king tide floodwillbecomemorefrequent andintense.

    Sealevelshaverisenby about10centimetresin thepasttwodecades, withpredictionsthatby

    theendof thecenturythe totalincreasewillbe aboutonemetreabove1990s levels.Climatescientistshave warnedthat kingtide floodsareonlythefirstsignofsealevel rises,withmorefloodingof low-lyingareas predicted.

    Christchurchfor another sold-outseasonofWaitingforGodot.

    Interviewedbefore theopeningnightperformance,McKellen, 91,saidChristchurch audienceshadembraced hisinterpretation of theSamuelBeckettplay aboutwaitingagesandagesforsomethingtohappen.

    Theremaybe anelementofnostalgiaforthe days beforetheearthquakein the overwhelmingaudience responses,but I thinkCantabriansalso getBeckettsmessageaboutfutility,McKellensaid.

    People comeagain andagain,bringing allthe family.

    McKellen andStewart, 90, hadhopedto performtheirfourthChristchurchseasonofWaitingforGodotatthe IsaacTheatre Royal,butthat theatrewas alreadybookedfor nextweeks worldpremiereofthe seventhfilm inPeterJacksonsSilmarillionfranchise.

    Thetheatrewas alsobelowthecapacity requiredfor audiencedemand,McKellensaid.

    Weneededall 2500seatsintheauditorium.

    Irememberthatthereweresuggestionsthat theChristchurchTownHall bedemolishedafterthe2011 earthquake.

    Thank goodness thatdidnthappen.

    He saidthe prestigiousInternationalModernistMasterpiecesAward givento theChristchurchCityCouncil in 2019forits sensitiveand thoroughrepairand renovationof theTownHall,guidedby originalarchitectSirMilesWarren,showedthatitwasonthe righttrack.

    Can youbelievethatthegovernmentofthe daywantedtobowlthe TownHallandsteerthecouncil towardspayingfor somesortof performingarts precinctinstead?McKellensaid.

    Those snatchesaside,itwas alovelyChristchurchnight.Andifyouwantedpeaceandquiet,thiswastheplaceto be.Youknowtheoldjoke ChristchurchCBD CentreBit ofDoughnut.But isitrightthat we canhappilymeditateinthemiddleof thecountryssecond-biggest cityon a Saturdaynight?

    Looking acrossthe vastemptygrassylawnsand gardensspreadingoutfromthe river andtowardsthe cathedral,the lonelyTheatreRoyalsatpaleinthemoonlight.Itwas alsodeserted another casualtyof thebig crowdsthatSpecialisedCranesAddingtonAuditoriumcan pull.

    Fartheroutagain, welloutofearshot andacross town,theorchestrawouldbe practisingattheWoolstonBrass Bandcentre.Swing 180degreesand 12kmawayinHornby,moremusicianswould
