BUSINESS AWARD SPEAKERSDuring the evening, guest speakers addressed those attending. This year presentations were made by 2 representatives from the South Waikato Investment Fund Trust, (SWIFT).

Bruce Sherman also a member of Putaruru Moving Forward, (PMF), noted that “change starts with a story we tell each other - the story that we tell ourselves. Over about the last five years, the people of Putaruru have told themselves a story, a story of what Putaruru used to look like. It’s a story of what Putaruru has been and will be - the challenge is to take this new story and turn it into action.”

Both the SWIFT trust and PMF, have been working very hard to attract large manufacturing opportunities to Putaruru.

“We have the road, rail, and workforce capability to offer businesses wanting to establish here,” continued Bruce.

Bruce sees small businesses as a key to development. “They can give us the sense of a thriving and growing town centre - we need more of them. It takes a enthusiasm to make this change.”

Francis Pauwels, director of Karu NZ, regional development specialist, contracted to SWDC to facilitate business promotion. He outlined some of the action being taken by SWIFT. • running business coaching programmes • supporting Waikato River Trails development • funding for the South Waikato Achievement Trust in Tokoroa • working with the South Waikato District Council looking at the urban growth and identifying land for business development • giving money for new businesses to develop and grow

“Today, (Friday 28 September), SWIFT purchased the old RSA site in Tokoroa as part of strategic land acquisition,” said Francis.

SWIFT are about to start on a business attraction programme to encourage moving to, or the setting up of branches in the South Waikato, especially by firms being squeezed in the Auckland area.

“We are really looking for opportunities to create jobs,” concluded Francis.

Pride in Putaruru and Putaruru Moving Forward made a special presentation during the night to honour the work of Sam Marshall from the South Waikato District Council in supporting the development of the Putaruru Concept Plan and initiating the Growth Plan, as Sam and his family will soon be taking a new direction.

Ben Smit, (Acting CEO of the South Waikato District Council), described Sam Marshall Group Manager as

“exhibiting a huge passion for growth both in terms of community and also in town planning.”

Sam worked with PMF, SWIFT and the Putaruru community and said that had he never before experienced working with a group that had such a positive vision for the future. His closing remarks were, “be brave - and drive that growth plan through.” [See page 9 of this Prattler.]

Decorations by PIP and catering by the District Services Memorial Club took on a cocktail theme this year. Tasty nibbles throughout the evening were served by appropriately dressed hostesses and Putaruru College students operated a photo-booth.

After all the awards had been presented, Matt Corrin congratulated all Putaruru businesses and thanked everyone for supporting the 2018 Pride in Putaruru Business Awards.

It was then time to listen and dance to the sounds of Coupe de Ville.

Coupe de Ville entertained after the awards had been presented.

Matt Corrin, Pride in Putaruru, thanked all those who attended the PiP Business Awards evening.

CACTUS 2018: PUTARURU COLLEGEOur teenagers are like the cactus, a bit prickly on the outside but full of goodness on the inside. CACTUS is a physical exercise and mentoring programme facilitated by community volunteers and local off duty police officers. It’s about “getting to the good on the inside.”

CACTUS is designed to extend a young person’s mind and physical capability. To educate and give choices to them, instil discipline, self-esteem and encourage them to look and listen before they act.

The course builds physical and mental conditioning, develops leadership, team building and personal responsibility. A rapport is built between the staff, the young person and their families with the interaction making a positive and sustainable difference in their lives.

This year, CACTUS was undertaken for the first time by a group of Putaruru College students. Prior to starting CACTUS they were told that they would gather in the pre-dawn darkness, be subjected to military style drills and then pushed to their physical limits every session, adding that if they stepped out of line, showed up late, spent too long in the showers, wore the wrong uniform, for example, they would be punished. Yet they still volunteered. This shows the calibre of these students straight away.

For seven weeks students were pushed. There were tears, tantrums, blood, vomit and litres and litres of sweat. Seven weeks of being mentally and physically prepared for their final session, the Longest Day.

On this final day the team stayed overnight at the school, getting to bed late, then being woken at 2:45am in the beginning hours of the day. Bedding was packed and they were bused down to Tokoroa where they were given a fence post in pairs to carry around in the bush, in the dark, for nearly two hours.

On the completion of this they were taken through a series of exercises at the rugby grounds, flipping a truck tyre across the field repeatedly, running with a 30 metre rope around their waist, pushing the Police prisoner van - all good stuff.

Next it was off to the South Waikato Indoor Pools where the students got to have a dip and warm up while treading water and pumping the legs through some kicking exercises. After quick showers they made their way back up to Putaruru for breakfast. [The Prattler covered the day from this point on.]

Following breakfast, students completed a stadium Box Fit challenge with Charlie.

Stacey Taylor drove the Glenshea Park session and yes, more sustained physical activities and group challenges were in store.

There was a quick refreshment break before a tyre session with AJ Purnell. “The tyre session can be the last straw for many. It’s at that point where they want to quit, they’re done, they’ve reached their limit,” said Daniel Peat, “so we pushed them further!”

After a jog to the Fire Station, the CACTUS students picked up poles, large heavy poles and with five per pole, the teams walked through town, along Tīrau Street into Junction Street, past Putaruru College and up the Griffiths Street hill.

The by now ‘famous’ or ‘infamous,’ (depending on how you look at it), the Green Sally Up song, with its roots dating back to difficult times, signalled the start of this log lifting, holding, lowering workout. There were many toots from passing vehicles and applause from the early afternoon spectators.

The team re-grouped and jogged in formation to the rear entrance of Countdown where they physically pulled a Fire Engine up Mackenzie Street to Kensington Street along to the Police Station where the Longest Day came to its conclusion at around 3:30 in the afternoon.

“They did it, probably the hardest thing any of them have done in their lives. I am incredibly proud of what this group has achieved individually and as a team. When they started they were in their own little groups, their own little niches. Within a few weeks while doing team exercises, they were communicating better, working together, congratulating and encouraging each other,” Peat added.

At the presentation held in the evening at Putaruru College the group was urged by Daniel Peat on behalf of the instructors and teachers that volunteered to mentor them through CACTUS - “don’t let CACTUS be something you did while at school, a memory of something you achieved. Let it be the start of something bigger and better. Let it be the start of a habit of setting a goal and achieving it. I want each of you in the next week to set a goal. It can be a quick easy goal of running a half marathon or of becoming a vet. Whatever it may be, I want you the set a goal and then work on achieving it. Then set another goal and work on that. Always have something that you are working on achieving in your life - it will give you direction, self-confidence and it will ensure that you stay motivated. Do it for the room full of people that you see in front of you that all played a part in making this CACTUS a success, but most of all, do it for yourselves. As you progress through life, setting your goals and achieving them, don’t compare yourself with others, no one else in the world is better at being you, than you!”

Programmes such as this come about through the work of Blue Light, a registered charity that works in partnership with the police to deliver an extensive range of youth programmes and activities.

The goals of Blue Light are to: • reduce the incidence of young people becoming an offender or victim of crime • encourage better relations between the police, young people, their parents and the community

Blue Light is a non profit organization and seeks funding to continue running this CACTUS programme. If you are interested in being a sponsor for this event or any other, please email: [email protected]

For a programme such as this, the support of sponsors for providing money for equipment, uniforms and the many meals consumed over the seven weeks was much appreciated. Putaruru College provided their premises and equipment and many teachers came along each morning to CACTUS and worked out with their students. They showed their solidarity and commitment to the group and supported them the whole way. The families of the students too provided support for the early morning starts, dropping them off at various locations around town, assisting with the preparation of breakfasts, and raising their children in an environment where they felt empowered enough to push themselves, to volunteer for this programme in the knowledge that they had the support of their family and whanau.

The instructors and staff also took time out of their days to come along and mentor the students, to assist them in reaching their goals and make CACTUS a success.

TIRAU TENNIS CLUBTirau Tennis Club began the new season of tennis on Tuesday, 2 October at 6 pm. The season runs to the end of daylight saving and a bit beyond if the weather cooperates.

They have three floodlit courts and a fourth court which is always open to the public. All courts are astro-turf - good for oldies and kids alike. Every Tuesday night we have a sausage sizzle which helps with club funds and gives some of us a night off cooking!

For the juniors, we operate a six week coaching programme, run by professional tennis coach Clem Apted. This year the lessons will start on Tuesday 23 October. There are three sessions starting at 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30. Preferably the 5:30 session is for older students, those wanting to restart their tennis careers, or those who feel the need to brush up on various strokes. Clem can even help with court etiquette - for those with a Serena temperament. Phone Janet Palmer on 07 883 1452 or 027 272 9835 for coaching enquiries.

We are keen to start a junior tennis programme as a follow-up after the coaching finishes in November. The idea at present is for juniors to play on Tuesdays from 4pm to 6pm, with the hope that as they develop they will stay on to play with the senior members at 6pm. Parental involvement would be required - unless we find a wonderful volunteer who would like to run the programme. Phone Janet!

Tennis is a great sport - it embraces so many skills, and you’ll meet some friendly locals. Give it a go at Tirau. Visit the website www.tirautennis.nz

THE TRAINS ARE COMING TO TIRAUFor the first time ever the trains are coming to Tirau. The Greater Waikato Railway Modellers in association with Castle Pamela and Tirau Primary School are staging a model railway exhibition in the Great Hall at the Castle on Labour Weekend from Saturday 20 to Monday 22. The exhibition opens at 10am each morning and closes at 3pm.

After approaching Kelvin and Pamela for the use of the Castle as our venue, this year we decided also to approach Siobhan Patterson the Principal at Tirau Primary to see if we could partner with the school to raise funds for both the school and our modelling group. This was greatly accepted.

As part of the build-up to this and to generate interest with the pupils we asked if we could take some shunting puzzles to school and let everyone have a go. The school kindly gave us the use of the Resources room for the morning and every class came and everyone had a turn. It was a fantastic morning. There were some spectacular crashes, some brilliant driving and most of all lots and lots of fun and laughter.

We would love to go back to the school in the future and possibly do a model building session with lots of PVA glue, cardboard, paint, and youthful energy. It could be as exciting as actually playing trains.

The exhibition will have about 12 different layouts including Thomas the Tank Engine, a Christmas layout which hopefully will have a Santa train, (if we can convince him to come south for the weekend). The will be Drive a Train and Shunting Puzzles for a bit of interactive fun, especially for the dads and granddads.

We hope you can come along, have some fun, then relax with a cup of coffee and one of Pamela's fantastic date or cheese scones. The cafeteria is open during the exhibition. If you want to see the Castle's museum and exhibits just pay separately at the cafeteria till.

SWIMMINGThis warmer weather is getting everyone in the swing of spring and that means summer is just around the corner, which means pools and swimming!

The Putaruru War Memorial Pools will be opening for the season on Saturday 17 November at 12noon with entry free for the day.Tīrau Pools however, will be undergoing some resurfacing work and because contractors have had to wait for the warmer, more settled weather, the opening day has had to be deferred a week or two.

As the work is weather dependent an exact date cannot be set, so Council will advise of the opening date closer to the season.

ROTARY PUTARURULast month we planted trees at the Northern entrance to Putaruru but earlier in the year we were proud to finish another project - the donation of and installation of a Vista Frame on the Waikato River Trails. Most members were involved with this at some point and again we had younger family members involved. We have also planted the area with young plants and paid for the picnic table across the track.

The frame can be found on the trail between Arapuni and Jones Landing - park on the left at the parking area Putaruru side of the 2 dam bridges, an easy walk in for approximately 5 minutes. A great family walk and opportunity to capture a memory of yourselves with views of the river and background cliffs while resting at the table or having a snack. Our thanks to Glyn from Waikato River Trails for his assistance and to the Rotary Foundation for some funding through a grant.

WHAT’S UPThe car wouldn't start outside Edmeades jewellers. The lovely gentleman came out to see if I needed help. Fortunately I already had the AA on the way. But it was still very kind of the gentleman to come and offer assistance. One of the many great things about living in small town New Zealand, people still want to help others.

COW CAFE PROSTRATE CANCER AWARENESS BREAKFASTRecently, The Cow cafe hosted a prostrate cancer awareness breakfast with a donation from each of those attending going to the prostrate cancer foundation. There was even a table set up outside taking advantage of the great sunny start to the day.

Blue September is the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s annual national awareness and fundraising campaign. Every year around 3,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in New Zealand and more than 600 will die. That’s about the same number as women who die from breast cancer. The good news is that early detection can significantly reduce the risk of death from prostate cancer.

Mostly, men don’t know how dangerous this disease is, they don’t talk to their doctor about it, their doctor doesn’t talk to them about it, or they simply don’t have any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. The Prostate Cancer Foundation receives no government funding, relying instead on donations to help them spread the message for men to get regular checks, fund research that will improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes, and provide support for those who need it the most - the men and their families living with prostate cancer every day.

Some of the projects undertaken by the Prostate Cancer Foundation include: Providing support • 34 support groups, from Kaitaia to Invercargill • Online support forum • Patient welfare fund • 0800 HELPLINE • Patient education forums

Funding research • PSMA pilot study - Mercy Radiology • Lutetium 177 Treatment pilot study • Pasifika men study • Urology Nurses Training Programme Development • Study grants for nurses for Masters level course

HOME BASED BUSINESSES: IMPORTANT REQUESTPride in Putaruru has almost completed the process of building a new database of businesses in the community in order to facilitate interaction with existing and future businesses that establish here.

There is currently no mechanism to communicate with businesses that are home based. When people enquire about where such and such a service can be obtained, helpful assistance is not always possible.

We want to remedy this situation and you can help us. If you have a home based business or know someone who has, please fill in this short form or pass it on to an appropriate person. PUTARURU GROWTH PLAN UPDATEWhat have we been doing? While progress towards the start of the formal public notification process as been slower than anticipated, there has still been a lot on the go, including:

• Councillor workshop • Steering Group meetings • Project Team meetings • Fortnightly Planners meetings incorporating writing and legal review of the draft District Plan change • Landowner meetings • Prospective developer meetings • External infrastructure consultant discussions (including expansion of project scope) • Liaison with government departments • Staff collaboration on a Long Term Plan (LTP) submission (including the inclusion of additional funding in the LTP 2018-28).

What’s in it for me?There are several key benefits to Council ensuring we are well placed to respond to the growth occurring in the district. These include sharing rates costs going forward as we increase our rating base, improved level of services for existing activities and the economic spin-off from population and district growth.

Why is it taking so long?A summary was provided on the performance of the three Waters (water, wastewater, storm-water) networks in Putaruru in March. However, after months of further evaluation of the Watershed Engineering reports it has become clear that the likely extent of the upgrade works needed to serve new residential development could be considerable.

This is disappointing news and not what we expected. Further investigations were necessary to ensure our modelling is as accurate as possible.

Staff, Mayor, Councillors, Putaruru Moving Forward (PMF) and external consultants are frustrated too, but we want to assure those interested in this project and those keen to drive Putaruru forward that this project remains a significant project to Council and others involved.

WAIKATO RIVER TRAILS TRUST WINS AWARDOn 12 September at the Central Kids Kindergartens Conference Centre, the Waikato River Trails Trust was presented with an Outdoor Access Champion Award from the Walking Access Commission. This award was in recognition of their work in developing and maintaining over 100 kilometres of tracks to the highest standard.

The Waikato River Trails Trust has also celebrated the planting of 100,000 native trees along the Mighty Waikato River. The milestone recognizes the role the Trust plays as custodian of a quarter of New Zealand’s longest River.

The Outdoor Access Champion Awards are given annually by the NZ Walking Access Commission to individuals and groups across the country who have made a significant and lasting contribution to public access to the outdoors. Chairman of the commission, John Forbes, (also Mayor of Opotiki), was pleased to be able to acknowledge what groups like the Waikato River Trails Trust do. John commented, “People in 100 years time can look back at the legacy you have left today - something we can enjoy now and tomorrow, and also in the future. The outdoors can refresh us and provide a chance to recuperate and appreciate nature.”

Ric Cullinane, Acting Chief Executive Te Tumuaki (and Operations Manager Te Kaiwhakahaere Rauemi), spoke about how the New Zealand Walking Access Commission focused on aspects such as: providing leadership on walking access issues administering a national strategy on walking access, including walkways, undertaking mapping of walking access, providing information to the public, overseeing a code of responsible conduct and negotiating new walking access.

John Forbes then presented the award to Kevan Stewart, the newly appointed chair of the Waikato River Trails Trust. Kevan thanked the commission and said that the trust were looking forward to extending the trail outwards to link with other trails.

Waikato River Trails General Manager Glyn Wooler then paid tribute to the people back in 2002 that took on the concept of a river trail through to its opening in November 2011 and all the hard work of the volunteers involved - work that continues today. Lake Karapiro is the home of the 100,000th native tree planted by the Waikato River Trails Trust. To acknowledge this significant milestone a Kaihikatea was planted just a few meters from the lake. It has taken several years of sustained commitment to get to this point and has been achieved through true community collaboration. The results achieved over several years transform the environment. The new biodiversity corridor that has been created often replaces weeds such as blackberry and broom and also acts as a filter taking nutrients into the trees which helps clean up the Waikato River. With over 44,000 people using the trails in the last 12 months the results of the planting project are providing a wonderful experience for everyone enjoying the Trails. The Trust would like to Acknowledge the following for their support. Principal Sponsor, South Waikato District Council, Major Sponsor, Mercury. Supporters of our Riparian Enhancement project, Waikato River Authority, Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust, South Waikato Environmental initiatives fund, Waikato Regional Council.

PROMS RAISES MONEY FOR PLAZA DEFIBRILLATORThe Proms in Concert, a charity event to raise money towards the purchase of a defibrillator for the Plaza Theatre, took place the afternoon of 16 September.

A cheque for $2000 dollars was presented to The Plaza Theatre trustees as a result of this locally organised concert - congratulations to the organisers, performers and of course the attending public.

Over 200 attended this community minded entertainment and the Putaruru Choir conceived this innovative take on the traditional Proms concerts in England. The ‘Queen’ and ‘Duke’ were in attendance and also presented certificates to those who performed.

To bring a range of musical styles to an event such as this is no easy feat and those who performed are to be congratulated on supporting the Proms in Concert.

The concert started regally with God Save the Queen and God of Nations, performed by the Putaruru Choir and Harmony Chorus Hamilton. These two groups continued with a set of popular songs such as Do You Hear the People Sing and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

The Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa o Patetere presented a rousing collection of waiata and action songs while the Putaruru Theatre Players gave us selections from the musical Groovy.

Rebecca White accompanied by pianist Irene McIvor sang O Mio Bambino Caroand the Matamata Ladies Choir performed a traditionally orientated set that included the Skye Boat Song, and Edwlweiss.

Tenor soloist, John Darke from Tauranga, gave strong renditions of favourites such as

Bridge Over Troubled Waters and Anthem from Chess.

Rebecca White and Carrie Jacob-Bond performed A Perfect Day as a duet and to add orchestral depth, the Te Awamutu Brass Band rounded the proms themed afternoon with numbers such as Trumpet Voluntary, and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. Again, with a respectful nod to the Proms, the

Charity Concert concluded with the combined choirs and guest artists singing Rule Britannia, with John McLean providing the solo, and Land of Hope and Glory.

Mary Heberley was the Musical Director for the combined choir items

with Irene McIvor, the Pianist. John McLean not only welcomed the Queen and Duke but also introduced performances and linked the items.

A traditional afternoon tea rounded off the entertainment provided by Proms In Concert at The Plaza, Putaruru.
