HistoricaL In the spring of 1915, after witnessing in the research laboratories of theCorning Glass Works a series of definitive tests of the physical characteristics of "PYREX" chemicalglass with reference to its suitability for laboratory use, we placed a stock order for 150,000 pieces,mostly Flasks and Beakers. Upon this order the selection of shapes and quantities for the firstfactory production was based and the ware delivered against it in October, 1915, was the firstavailable for sale.

Because of this initial stock order, the Corning Glass Works kindly permitted us to makethe first advertising announcement of "PYREX" Laboratory Glassware in The Journal of Indus-trial and Engineering Chemistry, October, 1915. In this advertisement, after describing theunusual stability and low expansion coefficient of "PYREX" chemical glass, we stated:

"Our expectation is that, in practical laboratory use, Pyrex flasks and beakers willprove distinctly superior to anything heretofore offered, either at home or abroad."

It is gratifying that our expectation has been so universally fulfilled and confirmed by theexperience of scientists, not only in the U. S. but throughout the world.

In each of the nineteen years from 1915 to 1934, inclusive, we have been thelargest distributors of " PYREx " Brand Laboratory Glassware and our average stockof same is maintained at from 3000 to 4000 original cases.

The arrangement ofmaterial differs from that ordinarily followed, since the authors seek to develop the sequence ofevents in the study of the earth and its materials according to their origin. The text makes clearthe positive relationship between the different geologic processes and the organization of the earthmaterials, thus fitting the whole into a connected story of the earth. The treatment of historicalgeology attempts to give, without technicalities, a clear understanding and appreciation of thesubject. Although the book is unusually concise, it adequately covers all the essentials.

Here is the second edition of a pioneering text which for nearly seven years has been a standardin the field. Knowlton's Physics was one of the first textbooks to succeed in presenting physicsfrom the humanistic viewpoint. It tells, in an interesting, readable style, the absorbing story ofman 's progress in the mastery of his physical environment, and at the same time gives the studenta sound, solid foundation in physical science. These features, so well liked by both teachers andstudents, are retained in the new edition. In revising the book Professor Knowlton has simplifiedthe treatment, making it more teachable, and has rearranged the material to permit more conveni-ent division into term and semester fractions. Nevertheless, the basic pedagogical philosophy whichmade the first edition so successful has not been abandoned, and the book continues to combine astimulating approach with sound scholarship.
