WHEN WE PARTIC IPATE IN A RIBBON CUTT ING OR DEDICATION SERVICE , I AM REALLY IMPRESSED WITH

HOW PRESBY ENGAGES ITS RESIDENTS AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COMMUNITY.

– HARRY SCHEID, PRESIDENT & CEO OF HORST CONSTRUCTION

Bricks and mortar form our buildings, but the foundation is laid in our partnerships.

At Presby, our decades-long relationships with businesses such as TN Ward Company, Horst Construction and McBrick Building Group are about more than just replacing a windowpane, installing a countertop or even bringing our next community to life.

These relationships play key roles in continuing the philanthropic values that fuel the Presby mission.

The bond between Presby and TN Ward dates all the way back to 1981, when the first Presby Affordable Housing community, Riverside Apartments in Center City Philadelphia, opened.

“We see how committed Presby is to the mission, and it ’s inspiring to participate,” said Tom Falvey, President of TN Ward, which supports our causes at the level of the Chairman’s Circle. “Over the years, Presby’s corporate commitment has never been just about Presby. It has been about the community and the people in it.

“You see people at places like 58th Street and Reed Street, and they are so happy,” he continued. “You love to be around them, and they tell you what a great place it is to live in. How can you walk away and not say we have to do more of this?”

For the last several years, McBrick Building Group has been one of the lead sponsors of our annual Inspired Service Recognition Dinner.

“Our dynamic with Presby’s residents is phenomenal, and our work is very rewarding,” said Noel Weiss, President of McBrick, which also supports at the Chairman’s Circle level. “Presby’s strong leadership trickles down to the rest of the organization. When you drive up to a Presby community, it ’s always like a beacon of light and hope.”

The results of our corporate partnerships go beyond the tangible. They run even deeper.

“When we contribute to organizations, we want to see a return, with true benefits for people,” Falvey said. “We can see results with Presby. That’s why we get up in the morning. We’re not in the business of being multibillionaires. We’re in the business of feeling good about what we do.”

IT’S MORE THAN CONSTRUCTION. IT’S A COMMITMENT.The Power of Community

Presby breaks ground on one of its newest Affordable Housing communities, Witherspoon Senior Apartments in Southwest Philadelphia.

Witherspoon Senior Apartments will be the fourth Affordable Housing community on the 58th Street campus.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 7

“It certainly is possible to eat healthy while living on a budget,” said Briana Waldie, a regional dietician with FLIK. “We realize just how important a matter it is to these residents. And we want to do all we can to educate people on how to eat healthy while on any budget. That’s why we want to be involved with Cupboards of Care. The participating residents are grateful to FLIK and the other corporate partners who are helping them move their lifestyles in a healthier direction.”

If you ask those residents, they will tell you that they are seeing tangible results.

“My doctor recently congratulated me for losing weight,” said Gloria of Riverside Apartments in Center City. “I did so by eating more fresh veggies and fish.”

“Cupboards of Care is a beautiful program,” said Lil from St. John Neumann Place in South Philadelphia. “It has helped me eat healthier and reduce my diabetes medication.”

A response to a need leads to a charitable answer. A charitable answer leads to a lasting impact. A lasting impact changes lives forever.

Healthy decisions lead to healthy eating. Healthy eating leads to healthier lifestyles. Healthier lifestyles lead to

healthier outcomes.

For some, the path to healthy eating is easy to follow. But for many, particularly those in Presby’s Affordable Housing communities, it ’s just not that simple. There is a missing link in that chain. The missing link is sufficient monetary funds to buy healthy foods.

Enter Presby’s Inspired Life and the Cupboards of Care program.

Since the program’s inception in 2016, Cupboards of Care has helped residents in Presby’s Affordable Housing communities fulfill their nutritional needs and develop healthier eating habits by supplying them with supermarket gift cards. These gift cards are funded with the assistance of the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust and other area funders.

“As a member of this program, I can now purchase fresh, quality meats that are rich in protein,” said Janie, a resident of Ann Thomas Apartments at Presby’s 58th Street Campus in Southwest Philadelphia. “They were most definitely too expensive to buy before.”

“I now read food labels since I’ve been a member of the program,” said Beulah, who calls Tioga Apartments in North Philadelphia home. “I can make sure there isn’t a lot of sugar and sodium in what I buy now.”

FLIK Lifestyles, Presby’s food services vendor, plays an integral role in fortifying the teaching aspects of the Cupboards of Care program.

FLIK offers participating residents nutritional counseling sessions administered by a certified dietician. These sessions raise residents’ awareness of the importance of making the most of a limited shopping budget, food additives to avoid, understanding labels and preparing quick, healthy meals.

IT CERTAINLY IS POSSIBLE TO EAT HEALTHY WHILE LIVING ON A BUDGET. WE REALIZE JUST HOW IMPORTANT A MATTER IT IS TO THESE RESIDENTS. AND WE WANT TO DO ALL WE CAN

TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON HOW TO EAT HEALTHY WHILE ON ANY BUDGET.

– BRIANA WALDIE, REGIONAL DIETICIAN WITH FLIK LIFESTYLES

IT ’S NOT JUST A GIFT CARD. IT’S THE GIFT OF HEALTH.The Power of Wellness

Robert Nowell of The 58th Street Campus is a member of Cupboards of Care, a program in which food vendor FLIK Lifestyles plays an integral role.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 9

Assistant Director of Affordable Housing Sharon Johnson (above) belongs to Partners in Caring, which provides her with an opporunity to support residents beyond her everyday role.

When you walk through the doors of a Presby community, you aren’t just seeing or chatting with a resident or a

team member; you are meeting a member of our family — the Presby family.

The Presby family is one that cares about all its members throughout every community.

A shining example of the exceptional care we show for one another is the Partners in Caring program.

The program offers team members a unique chance to philanthropically support the needs of Presby residents. Gifts made via payroll deduction provide team members with a convenient yet meaningful way to give back to the ministry beyond their everyday roles.

“My mother taught me long ago that God said to give generously to those in need,” said Sandy Ginyard, a receptionist at Broomall and a Partners in Caring participant. “That’s why I choose to give.”

Gifts made through the Partners in Caring program support benevolent assistance and life enhancement programs for residents throughout Presby’s Inspired Life. Currently, close to 200 team members participate in the program.

This spirit of generosity lives vibrantly at Presby’s Broomall community, where approximately a quarter of all team members participate in the program. Tricia Katz is a Resident Services Liaison at Broomall. In her current role, as well as in her previous role as Director of Life Enrichment at the community, she has a direct impact on Broomall’s residents.

But Tricia realizes she can make a difference in other ways and in other communities. She takes her role in Partners in Caring to heart and generously gives to those across the Presby family — even those she may never meet. And she does so for the simplest of reasons: She cares.

“The reason I participate in Partners in Caring is the obvious — our residents,” Katz said. “It makes me happy to know that, beyond my day-to-day work, I can have an impact on a larger scale. I love seeing the program in

action at our community and all across Presby.

“I feel that making it easy for team members to donate at their comfort level is why Partners in Caring is a success in the Broomall community and throughout the Presby organization.”

Contributions to this vitally important program help our residents in so many ways.

Team members can direct their gifts to an area of their choice. Contributions

can go to the Compassionate Care program, which helps residents who need assistance making ends meet, or they can be allocated to the Affordable Housing Fund, which provides vital wellness and social enrichment programs for residents in our low-income communities. The donor can also choose for his or her gift to go to the area of most critical need.

Presby team members do more than work together: They give together in Partners in Caring. And working and giving together can make a world of difference.

IT’S MORE THAN A PAYCHECK. IT’S A PAY-IT-FORWARD.The Power of Sharing

IT MAKES ME HAPPY TO KNOW THAT,

BEYOND MY DAY-TO-DAY WORK, I CAN HAVE AN IMPACT ON A LARGER SCALE.

S ince our inception, we have held familial ties to faith-based institutions, particularly Presbyterian churches to which Presby

attributes its founding, all throughout the region. Those enduring ties are sustained through Presby’s growth and service and its ministry to people 62 and better across the socioeconomic spectrum.

Presby’s relationship with Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church dates back to 1955 and our first president, The Rev. Paul A. White. Janet White has been a member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church since 1983 and is now the chair of Bryn Mawr’s Senior Adult Council, a group that advocates for older adults who are a part of the congregation.

She knows what the philanthropic partnership with Presby means.

“Why do we do this? We do this because we believe Presby’s mission fits with ours,” White said. “We have a bond in the area of caring for older adults. We believe in that. We know that Presby supports people when they come and stay. Presby is there for people. We are there for people, too. Presby’s programs encompass all of the things that are important to do for others.”

Presby’s Rosemont community is close to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, and many residents attend services there. But Bryn Mawr

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 11

is more than just a neighbor — the church is a valued contributor to the Presby mission.

“I think it ’s important for the church to be a voice and presence in the community,” White said. “And I think there are a lot of advantages to being connected with Presby. We know the two organizations are on the same wavelength. It ’s great to support a group of people who think the way we do.”

Rev. Dr. Debbie Watson is the pastoral associate at Narberth Presbyterian Church, another church that generously gives to Presby. Dr. Watson also serves on Presby’s Philanthropy Advisory Council and is Narberth’s mission ambassador to Presby.

“There are plenty of opportunities in the neighborhoods of this region for [Narberth] to be the hands and feet of Christ,” Dr. Watson said. “And that’s where Presby falls for us. It has a great appreciation for the ministry of senior housing and care and the options available. It’s not just about the Market-rate communities of the world. It’s about the Affordable Housing. It’s the possibility that, if someone is in a really bad way, there may be a solution.

“There are so many Presby communities that you don’t have to look so far away to find one,” Dr. Watson continued. “They are accessible.”

While we serve individuals of all faiths, the Presbyterian Church has been an essential partner in the success of our ministry.

In 1955, the bond was formed.

Today, in our 63rd year, the bond of service remains.

Into the future, the bond will continue to support exceptional living experiences for approximately 3,000 residents.

We invite you to continue Presby’s legacy of compassionate care by ensuring exceptional living

experiences for people 62 and better well into the future. By naming Presby in your will, or as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, you won’t affect your current cash flow, and you can change your decision at any time. No gift is too small, and the impact can be profound as you honor a loved one with your future gift. To create your own legacy of service and sharing, contact Lynn Marie Johnson-Porter, Vice President of Philanthropy & Mission Support, by calling 610-260-1153 or by emailing [email protected].
