What is Aid?

□Aid is help which can assist a country to overcome problems it faces. It can be long-term, short-term or medium term.

□There are different types of aid.□Good aid focuses on the problems of

a country and solves them by listening to the needs of the people.

Aid comes from 3 main sources

□From governments of developed nations.

□From international organisations such as the United Nations (UN).

□From Voluntary organisations such as Oxfam, Christian Aid, Save the Children.

1. Which two types of aid do you feel are the best long-term solutions? Give reasons for your answers.

Bilateral Aid

□Bilateral aid is given by one country to another country.

Multilateral Aid

□Multilateral aid is given by a group of countries; e.g. aid given by the United Nations (UN) or the European Union (EU).

□By 1986 one third of all aid given to sub-Saharan Africa came from EU members.

Sub-Saharan Africa

□Sub-Saharan Africa is the term used to describe those countries of the African continent that are not considered part of North Africa

Tied Aid

□When bilateral aid is given, there are usually conditions attached.

□A country may be given a grant from Britain, but in return a proportion of that money has to be spent on British goods and services.

□This is called tied aid and is sometimes referred to as boomerang aid.

Boomerang Aid

Grants and loans to be spent buying goods and services from the donor country

Orders,for machinery, vehicles, spare parts and instructors

Grants & loans given to African countries from donor countries
