ThafsNotOur Money!

G ET!That one little wordseems to sum up the fundamental natureof man. " There' s a little larceny in us all!"one sage of human behavior put it .

It's am azing how the prospect of gettingsom ething, especially getting something fornothing, can change a person 's wholeperspective, attitude and conduct. In likemanner, so can the prospect of losingsomething one already possesses.

An incident in my childhood, when I was about11 yea rs old , really brought that lesson home tome .

I had developed the hobby of raising pigeons inthe backyard of our Chicago , Ill inoi s, home. Ith ink at that time I probabl y had about 50 pair s,mostly rollers and homing pigeons.

It was about 1937. I used to visit theneighborhood businesses to collect their emptycigar boxes to use as nesting boxes for the birds.When I return ed home one afte rn oon wit h myarms full of cigar boxes, I was in for one of thesurprises of my life.

I went to the loft and began tearing the lids offthe boxes. When I picked up the third orfourth box in my stack, the one under it poppedwide open. I couldn't believe what I sawinside. The box was literally stuffed with hundreddollar bills!

When the initial shock wor e off, I began

September 1986

counting. The box contained $12,000 in hundreddoll ar bill s. My little heart was pounding so hard Ithough t t he neighbors could hear it.

W hat to do? I sealed the box and buried it deepin a hundred pou nd feed sack. I hardly slept thatnigh t, pon de ring how to spend that money .

For the next two days I couldn't concentrate inschool. I j ust sat and stared out the window, tryingto figure out the best way to begin using thosehun dreds . I kn ew I couldn't just walk in astore with a hu ndred dollar bill without raisingall kinds of questions. I realized nobody wouldbelieve an I I -year -old would lawfull y be carryingaround that kind of money. Especiallynot in 193 7.

I finally concluded I'd have to get my dadinvolved.

T hat evening after dinner I told my dad thestory about find ing the money.

"Well, what are you going to do with it ?" Heasked the question rather patiently. I was a littlesurprised that he d idn't seem as excited as I did.

I quickly told him how I thought he could payoff the mo rtgage on the house (we owed about$4 ,500 on the $6,500 purchase pr ice-rememberthose days?), buy a new car, get Mom newfurniture and kitchen gear, and get new clothes forthe fam ily ...

M y fat her didn ' t let me fini sh."What's the matter with you ?" he boomed.

" T hat 's not our money! You're going to take itback!"

" But I don't know where I got it ," I pleaded. "Idon't know which one gave it to me. "

"You're going to find out. "We walked to each store where I had 'asked for

boxes. He would wait outside while I went in. Hetold me I wouldn't have to say anything-that theywould remember me .

Finally, at the last business I could rememberhaving gone to, one of the owners saw me acrossthe store and started shouting, " T hat' s him! That'shim! T hat 's the boy!"

As it turned out, one of the two brothers whoowned the combination ice cream parlor, liquormarket and delicatessen had been acc usi ng th eother of stealing the (Continued on page 24)

The steaming issue in Congresscame to a boil when the House ofRepresentatives overwhelminglypassed an unprecedented, blockbuster trade bill that would re-

strain imports and mandatetrade retaliation against certainforeign competitors.

President Reagan chargedthat the House bill "wouldplunge the world into a tradewar, eroding our relationswith our allies and FreeWorld trading partners."

Next, the Senate must enact its own trade bill, withthe two houses reaching acompromise on their twoversions. Unless it is suffi-

- ciently weakened, Mr. Reagan is certain to veto thefinal bill.

But even so, protectionist legislation will not fadeaway. "The best the Administration can do at thispoint," observed the June9 Business Week, "is toslow the rush to protectionism on Capitol Hill."

As it stands, theHouse bill eliminatessome of the President'sdiscretionary authorityin dealing with tradecomplaints. Its mostcontroversial provisionrequires nations with"excessive trade sur

pluses" with the United Statesnamely, Japan, Taiwan and WestGermany-to reduce the surplusesby 10 percent a year or face highertariffs and quotas.

The West German EconomicsMinistry labeled the pending U.S.legislation "devastating," addingthat it could lead to major distortions in world trade.

An official from Taiwan franklystated that the provision to mandate cutbacks in surpluses, if leftstanding, could lead to a full-blowntrade war.

President Reagan's own traderepresentative, Clayton Yeutter,said the legislation flagrantly violated international agreements.

"If the United States becomes arogue elephant," he said, "rampaging through GATT [GeneralAgreement on Tariffs and Trade],obeying the rules it wants, stamp-

of the Free World's leading industrial powers in Tokyo, Japan.

After three days of closed doormeetings, the leaders of the UnitedStates, Japan, West Germany,France, Italy, Britain and Canadaemerged at their closing press conference to announce that they weregenerally pleased with their accomplishments. In the "Tokyo Economic Declaration," which theydrafted, the leaders said they reaffirmed their "commitment to halting and reversing protectionism,and to reducing and dismantlingtrade restrictions."

The words on the paper werehardly dry when U.S. PresidentRonald Reagan arrived home toface mounting pressure in Congress to enact stiff protectionisttrade legislation.

denness, long-simmering disputes over

world trade are boiling over.They threaten the interre

lated global economic systemthat has led to the unprecedented prosperity of the pastfour decades.

The days of the United States asthe dominant economic power inthe Free World are numbered. Anew relationship between WesternEurope and Japan is already beingforged to assume the world leadership role .

Politics Above All

Internal politics plays a big role inthe burgeoning trade crisis. "Forpolitical purposes," bluntly admitted one of the Administration's domestic foes, "the trade issue givesus a chance to be macho with WestGermany and South Korea. And itmakes the Republicans look kindof wimpy, frankly."

President Reagan's opponents,struggling to find a winnable 1986Congressional campaign issue, haveelevated the problem of the U .S.trade deficit out of all proportion toits real importance.

"The U.S. economy has been experiencing the strongest and possibly longest expansion on record,with more than eight million newjobs since President Reagan tookoffice," writes Alan Reynolds inthe May 9 National Review underthe foreboding title: "A Trade War

Could Wreck It All."

for a long time have been eachother's leading trading partner.

essentially with government livingyear-to-year beyond its means, piling up enormous indebtedness covered by massive borrowings eachyear. The trade deficit is a different issue. . explains Mr. Reynolds:

"A foreign exporter who tradesgoods to U.S. buyers in return fordollars has only two options for howto employ those dollars, both ofthem beneficial to the United States.He can use those dollars to buy U .S .goods, or he can use them to buyU.S. assets (stocks, bonds or real estate)-that is, to invest in the UnitedStates. In large part this is a tributeto the current strength of the American economy."

This foreign investment actuallycreates jobs. In 1984 alone, directJapanese investment created80,000 jobs in the United States.

It's amazing to see legislationmoving through the AmericanCongress to "punish" the Japanesefor their trade surpluses with theU.S.-while at the same time, stateand municipal legislators vie witheach other to see which ones can

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~g~ offer the best deals to Japanese'"': companies to build autorno-
J~~~~~;~~~~i~~~~~~iii~~:tive or electronics assemblyplants in their localities!This leaves the
Japanese nothing butconfused. Their worldwide trade surplus (theequivalent of US$56 billion last year, $50 billionwith the United States)is not going to disappearovernight, or quickenough to satisfy I\oliticaldemands in Washington.It will rise still furtherperhaps $80 billion thisyear-simply becauseJapan now pays a lot lessfor oil, one of its biggestimported products.
With the prospect offewer dollars earned fromsales of products to America,manufacturers in Asia andEurope are already beginningto scale back on their productive capacity. This means
Asian and European customers willbe purchasing fewer raw materials,synthetic fibers and machine tools,much of which until now has beenpurchased in the United Stateswith previous dollar earnings.
Disputes with EC, Canada
At the same time, Europe's Common Market and Canada arelocked in separate trade disputeswith Washington.
The first arose when the twoIberian countries, Spain and Portugal, entered the European Community on January 1 of thisyear. This move threatens,over a period of time, continued sales of U.S. grainproducts to the two countries.
In response, authoritiesin Washington havedrawn up a list of quotasto be placed incrementally on Common Market food imports to theUnited States. The ECin turn has said it wouldmatch these measureswith quotas of its ownon other U.S. farmproducts.
The second disputeerupted in May whenWashington suddenlyimposed a 35 percenttariff on Canadian \ \cedar roofing materials. \ AFTER TH
Nevertheless, Admittedly,within days Canada responded most of these are in the servicewith tariffs on American books, area, rather than in manufacturing,magazines and some computer where jobs are still being lost tocomponents. overseas producers.
The actions jeopardize irnple- The trade deficit is not nearly somentation of a free trade agree- serious as the U.S. budgetaryment between the two nations, who deficit. The budgetary crisis deals
ing on others it finds inconvenient,it could topple the entire worldtrade structure."
Adding his own grave concerns,Japan's Prime Minister YasuhiroNakasone said his nation wouldmake renewed, all-out attempts toencourage imports and domesticconsumption.
Mr. Nakasone told a press conference: "The government is making efforts to reduce Japan's tradesurplus. We must give ammunitionto President Reagan to prevent aprotectionist trade bill whichcleared the U.S. House of Representatives ... from being passed bythe Senate."
Stoltenberg, who has slashed hisgovernment's deficit by as much as50 percent. Bonn's governmentdeficit is the lowest in the Westernindustrialized world.
The United States, meanwhile,is turning inward. Its politiciansgenerally blame other nations forproblems that are essent iallyAmerica's own making. U .S . politicians have tried, for example, toencourage the Japanese public tosave less money, to spend more, toadopt more of the wasteful consumer habits of America, such asgreater credit purchasing.
"Stop being so successful. " isthe message that seems to comeacross from Washington to Tokyo.
Meanwhile, a new "economicaxis" is definitely under construction.
While this writer was in Japan,two of Japan 's four English-language dailies presented in-depthspecial reports on the increasingcooperation between Japan and thenations of the European Community (Common Market).
Until recently, the nations ofWestern Europe were leery ofJapan's growing economic prowess.They feared the penetration oftheir markets by Japanese products , especially automotive andelectronic goods.
This view is changing. Sinceearly 1985, reported the M ay 7Japan Times. " the overall tone ofthe EC's policy toward Japan hasconsiderably softened."
An altered Japanese approachtoward Europe has much to dowith this change. Tokyo has shiftedits primary trade effort from exports to that of investing in European plants coupled with the export of technology.
This policy, which means morejobs for a Europe still battling highunemployment, is meeting a muchbetter reception. Member states ofthe EC are actually beating a pathto Tokyo in search of investmentcapital.
Spain is particularly active inseeking Japanese help in its driveto catch up with its fellow ECmembers as quickly as possible.Japan, in turn, sees the Iberianpeninsula as a prime European operating base.
How society encourages itand what can be done tohalt the trend!
We don't need statistics to understandhow sex affectsteens.
All the government reports,all the articles and books' can'tcompare to personal experience.
Listen to this letter to us fromSally, an American teenager :"When I was 8 years old I first hadsex with a boy of 15. I did itbecause I lack love and attentionfrom my parents. I need love, andmy parents never show me any."
My heart went out to her andmy stomach knotted as I continuedto read her letter. "Nothing reallychanged at home, and at 15 I became pregnant. My boyfriendblamed me and left. I had nowhereto turn, I was trapped, so I had anabortion. Now I'm afraid to dateanyone, and I cry myself to sleepevery night."
Different Pressure Today
Many of our readers never experienced the pressures upon teens today. This makes it difficult forsome parents to understand theproblems their teens confront.
Early in this century, male-female relationships were clearly defined and understood. Men whopressured women to sleep withthem were regarded as lecherousrather than "heroes." A girl whosurrendered her virginity beforemarriage often felt she had disgraced herself, her family and God.
BritishTeenMoralsEnglish papers have had their
share of sad stories about therole of teen mothers in the
bab y boom in the United States." For every 1,000 girls between 15and 19 in America," wrote NewYork correspondent George Gordon, " 96 of them are pregnant.T hat is more than double the figure for England and Wales (45) , inCanada the rate is 44, in France43, Sweden 35 and the Netherlands 14."
The comparison is based on arepo rt from the Alan GuttmacherInst itute in the United States.
Many observers in the UnitedKin gdom fear that the intensity ofthe Amer ican plight of teen mothers-wed and un wed-will crossthe Atlan tic . Those fears are nowbeing realized . Illegitimate birthsare rising to record levels in England and Wales.
But there is some cause for hope.The Brit ish Government has finallyformally recognized the seriousnessof teen mora l breakdown-andcontem plated its consequences forEnglish society . Reports journalistJames Wightman in The DailyTelegraph: " A move to change sexeducation in the schools was announced by the Government lastnight with the aim of encouragingpupils to have due regard for moralconsiderations and the value offamily life" (3 June, 1986).
British Prime Minister MargaretThatcher wishes to put a brake onpermissive society attitudes generated in th e 1960s. Lord Denningreflected Mrs. Thatcher's concern
6
when he said : "The pillars ofmarriage have been almost brokendown. Surely we must do in ourschools everything we can to buildup th e respect for family life ."
M any observers are openly dissatisfied with the present conditionof state sex education. Aspects of itare manifestly decadent. An aid toeducators put out by a prominentmedical association almost recommends homosexuality as an alternative life-style. Also sibling incest isspoken of as a " loving relationship"in some fem inist educational aidsemployed in certain schools. Thegross details are unprintable.
Ronald Taylor, " a professor ofobstetrics and gynaecology, has hitout at sex educators for their reluctance to warn against the healthrisks involved with early or promiscuous sex" (Doctor, 29 May,1986). He continued, " S exuallytransmitted infections now causemore long term damage in terms ofchronic ill health , sterility andtubal pregnancies than ever before,despite stronger antibiotics."
Lord Halbury, president of theNational Council for ChristianStandards in Society, spoke out ingeneral support from a moralstandpoint. He said, "Those whoexplain sexual techniques to theyoung without explaining what being jilted can mean to them, whatbeing jilted when pregnant canmean, what a dose of VD can be,are morally vicious" (op. cit.).
Nonetheless, the school is notthe chief culprit, nor should it bethe place where children receive acorrect, primary, moral education.The onus is on the home. A reportin The Daily Mail expressed along-forgotten truism . It said," W hat is often forgotten is thestate in which the parents offertheir child up to be educated-ofhow well they have performed theirfunction as parents during thosecrucial formative years" (2 June,1986).
And although The Plain Truthapplauds any effort on any government's part to impart proper moralvalues to children, real progresscan only come when the averageBritish home is itself, once again, ahaven of moral fiber .
- John Ross Schroeder
Even just 30 years ago a pregnant teenager brought shame toher family.
Today these once fundamentalstandards are gone. Why?
What has occurred in ' modernsociet y to encourage free sex thatisn 't free?
Society essentially arouses inteenagers a craving to express theirsexuality rather than promote theneed to guide and control sexuality.Sexually graphic music, moviesand TV-directed to the teen audience-depict the delusion thatteenage sex is normal, healthy andsensational.
Teens witness the growing ranksof their promiscuous and/or pregnant, but still unmarried, heroes:movie, music and sports stars.
They hear authorities, social experts, educators and even religiousleaders proclaiming this life-styleas an acceptable form of behaviorfor moderns.
This puts considerable pressureupon teens to commit fornication .The young person who abs tainsfrom sleeping around is lookedupon by certain peers as odd.
One teenage boy admitted to meprivately, " I have to sleep aroundto demonstrate I'm not homosexual. " A 15-year-old girl confided,"I want to show others I can attract boys ." And if she becomespregnant, friends may give her ababy shower! It's no wonder teenshave a problem.
The Misinformed Teens
Some 12 million Americanteenagers are sexually active, somebeginning at age 13 or younger.
In Britain many young people nolonger discuss whether they willsleep together, but whether theycan bring their partners home forthe night.
These sexually active teens usually lack understanding about contraception and pregnancy. Oneteen asked, "I had sex when I was14; am I still a virgin?" Anotherconfused teenager said, "In orderto prevent pregnancy you get upquickly and shower." Social experts cite this kind of ignorance asevidence of the need for sex education in schools. Educators say ineffect, " Young people will sleep
M THE TELECAST • ••
The Secret,
ofthe Human MindThis article is from the script of a recent telecast by David Albert.
WH A T makes themind of man so superior to the brainof even the most in
telligent animals? What isthe secret of the human'mind?
It is a secret that psychologyknows nothing about, and religion has never properly explained.
To look at them, human brainsand animal brains look very muchalike. They have the same generalshape, structure and composition.As to size, the brain of a chimpanzee, one of the most intelligentanimals, is smaller than man's, butthe brains of elephants and dolphins are actually larger thanman's. Size and shape alone can'taccount for the vast difference.Then what does?
Animals can communicate with
each other; many of them havehighly developed senses of sight,touch and hearing. But they don'tuse letters, words, sentences, grammar, syntax. They don 't add andsubtract, multiply and divide. Theycertainly can't comprehend algebra, geometry, trigonometry andcalculus.
Animal minds don 't deal in abstractions and theories. But clearlyour minds do . Why? What's thedifference? The theory of evolutionhas never adequately explained thedifference-it sees man as just another animal.
But there are other critical differences as well. The animal mind
works by the principle of instinct.Beavers don't go to engineeringschool to learn to build dams. Theyknow how to do it instinctively.But they always build the samekind of dam, using the same basictechnique. You don't see a particularly gifted beaver designing an improved dam, and then teaching thenew model to others.
It's the same when birds build~ . nests, or when bees build hives.§ But human beings are vastly difi ferent. Their behavior is much
more governed by free choice thaninstinct. Their range of possibilitiesis much greater. They learn, andgrow , and experiment, and create.They even invent. machines to dosome of their thinking for them!
Man does not simply have abrain-he has a mind.
The difference between themind of man and animals is a spiritual difference. And science refuses to look at the possibility of a
spirit component in the mind ofman. Scientists, with very few exceptions, will not admit the possibility of the nonphysical or extraphysical component in the humanbrain.
According to psychology, man isonly physical, and his thinking andeven his emotions-such as love,anger, joy and frustration--can beexplained by physical chemical reactions. That's the dominant viewin all serious academic psychologytoday; but I want you to understand that this is a relatively recentand modern idea.
It seems to have had its originwith Charles Darwin, the father ofevolution, back in the 1830s. (Be-
e
fore that time, philosophers andtheologians assumed that man hada soul or spirit or something nonphysical that explained humanthought and behavior.) Man is thusreduced to matter alone. The Darwinian view comes straight down toour time through academic . psychology in both the United Statesand Europe to the university campuses of our day and age.
So today, to even consider thepossibility of nonphysical or spiritual forces present and active in themind of man would be seen as unscientific and hardly worthy of serious discussion by most psychologists.
In this connection, one eminentbrain researcher, Dr. SolomonSnyder, from Johns Hopkins University, was asked by a leading psychology magazine this question:"Does this mean that what we havecalled 'free will' can be reduced tothe interplay of brain chemicals?"
Dr. Snyder's reply is interesting.He said, " That goes right to theheart" of the question of how themind relates to the brain. We don'tknow the answer."
Science can only investigatephysical things. The whole spiritrealm lies outside of man's researchcapability. The methods of scienceare limited to physical knowledge.Spiritual matters, including thepossibility of a spirit in man, haveto be approached by differentmeans. And that is divine revelation through the Word of God, theHoly Bible.
For those of you who are willingto examine the other side of theargument, let me now show you
what is revealed in God's Word,and look at a whole new set ofpossibilities.
God, in ' his inspired Word, saysvery plainly in Job 32:8: "There isa spirit in man."
Notice it's not called a "soul," oran immortal soul; it's called "aspirit in man."
Man isn't spirit; he's physical,that's true. But the Bible teachingis that he has a spirit. You have aspirit, a nonphysical or extraphysical component in you right thisminute that imparts the spark ofintellect to your mind. Did youknow that?
According to the Bible, it is thepresence of that spirit in man thatseparates man from the animals,and that makes the difference between the human mind and theanimal brain. The spirit in man isthe secret of the human mind, asecret God reveals in his Word.Most people have never heard of
the spirit in man before,even if · they're religious,because churches onlyspeak of the "immortalsoul"-which is nowherementioned in the Bible.
Notice the existence ofthis little-understoodspirit in man, as explained in the New Testament. In I Corinthians2: II we read: "For whatman knoweth the thingsof a man, save the spiritof man which is in him?"
What is it, according tothe Bible, that explainswhat a man knows and
how he thinks? It's the "spirit ofman," according to the apostlePaul-writing here under inspiration in the New Testament.
That's vitally important information that you'll not hear explainedproperly anywhere else .
You need to understand why the.spirit in man is there, and how itoperates, and how it relates toGod's purpose for you. It's notenough to simply know about it.
The free booklet What ScienceCan't Discover About the HumanMind will give you the understanding and will explain the secret ofthe human mind in greater detailthan I have had time for in thisprogram. Write for your copy. ' 0
MYST AGEMystery of
the Kin m ofGodWe continue, with this twelfth installment, the serial
publication of Herbert W. Armstrong's last book, Mystery of the Ages.
JUST what do you mean,"the kingdom of God"?That, too, is an unsolvedmystery, not only to all in
the world but to the world'schurches, theologians and"Bible scholars" as well.
Actually that mystery is con nected with its associated mystery, the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Why do the churches disagreeon what actually is "the gospel ofJesus Christ"? During the firsttwenty or thirty years after thefounding of the Church in A.D. 31a violent controversy arose over thevery question of what is "thegospel of Jesus Christ." There ensued a hundred years in which allhistory of the New TestamentChurch was destroyed. It has beencalled "the lost century of Churchhistory." When the curtain lifted,about the middle of the secondcentury, there appeared an entirelydifferent type of church calling itself Christian, but in the mainpreach ing its own gospel ABOUTC hrist, not the gospel OF Christ.T he gospel OF Christ was thegospel Christ proclaimed. Jesuswas a Messenger sent from Godwith a message, and that messagewas THE KINGDOMOFGOD. Christ'smessage was Christ's gospel-thegospel OF Christ. It had not been
September 1986
proclaimed to the world until thefirst week in 1953 , when for thefirst time in about 1,900 years-acentury of time cycles-it went outon the world's most powerful radiostation, Radio Luxembourg in Europe.
It seems that today all churcheshave lost the gospel of JesusChrist. They preach primarily theirgospel ABOUT Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ came preaching thegospel of the kingdom of God. Yetfew preach about the kingdom ofGod today, for they have lost allknowledge of what it is! But doesany, except God's true Church,proclaim the true gospel of thekingdom of God today?
A prominent evangelist said to aworldwide radio audience that thegospel of the kingdom of God isnot for us today. Some denominations proclaim a "gospel of grace";some what they call a " gospel ofsalvation"; most a gospel aboutChrist; some a social gospel; somethe "Science of Mind" or "Religious Science."
Not One Is Right!
Some churches claim either thattheir particular denomination, or"Christianity" as a whole, constitutesthe kingdom of God. Aprominent television evangelistsai d, "The kingdom of God iswithin you ." Some have even
quoted Luke 17:21: " The kingdomof God is within you." The marginal correction, as well as the Revised Standard. the Moffatt andother translations, shows it shouldread «in the midst of you"-thatis, Jesus Christ was in the midst ofthem. He is the King of the futurekingdom of God, and the Bible inDaniel 7 and other places uses theterms king and kingdom interchangeably, that is, the king is, orrepresents, the kingdom he rules.
Not one is right! Could anythingseem more incredible? Yes , to themind reared in this world's concepts, one thing is, indeed, stillmore incredible! And that is thePLAIN TRUTH about what the kingdom of God really is!
The truth is not merely surprising-it is shocking-staggering! Itis a Great Mystery! Yet it is trulyGOOD NEws-t he most gloriousGOOD NEWS ever to enter humanconsciousness! .
CHRIST'S Gospel
What is the one and only gospel ofJesus Christ? THE WORLD DOESNOT KNOW! It has not beenpreached for 19 centuries, strangeas that may seem. Look into yourBIBLE. Look at it from the verybeginning!
"The beginning of the gospel ofJesus Christ" you'll read in Mark1:1. " N ow after that John was put
in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, .preaching the GOSPEL OFTHE KINGDOM OFGOD. and saying, The timeis fulfilled, and the kingdom of
. God is at hand: repent ye, andbelieve the gospel" (Mark 1:1415) .
It is necessary to believe thatGOSPEL to be saved! And how canyou believe it , unless you knowwhat it is? And for 1,900 years, theworld did . not know. That gospelwas suppressed and replaced byman's gospel about Christ.
Jesus went everywhere preaching the GOOD NEWS of the KINGDOM OFGOD. He taught in parablesabout the KINGDOM OF GOD. Hesent out seventy men preaching,and commanded ' them to preachTHE KINGDOM OFGOD (Luke 10:9).He sent the apostles, on whom theChurch of God was founded, topreach only THE KINGDOM OF GOD(Luke 9:1-2). After the resurrection, before ascending to heaven,Jesus taught his disciples about thekingdom of God (Acts 1:3).
Isn't it amazing that the worldhas LOST the knowledge of what itis?
The apostle Paul preached THEKINGDOM OF GOD (Acts 19 :8;20:25; 28 :23, 31). And GodAlmighty, through Paul , pronounced a double curse on man orangel that would DARE preach anyother gospel! (Gal. 1:8-9).
Why, then, do so many DARE topreach so many other gospels? Thegood news of THE KINGDOM OFGOD is something you must understand. and BELIEVE. in order to besaved! Jesus Christ said so! Youhad better be finding out what itis!
That gospel-the kingdom of .God-is the subject of this chapter. It follows the chapter. on themystery of the Church, becausethe kingdom of God follows theChurch. The purpose of theChurch, remember, is to prepare"called-out ones" to teach and torule in -the kingdom of GOd.
Daniel Knewl
Haven't you heard men speak ofthe kingdom of God something likethis: "By Christians everywhereworking together to bring aboutworld peace, tolerance and brotherly love, the kingdom of God may
12
at last be established in the heartsof men."
Because they rejected Christ'sgospel 1,900 years ago, the worldhad to supplant something else inits place. They had to invent acounterfeit! So we have heard thekingdom of God spoken of asmerely a pretty platitude-a nicesentiment in human hearts-reducing it to an ethereal, unrealNOTHING! Others have misrepresented that the "CHURCH" is thekingdom. Others confuse it withthe millennium. Still others have,earlier in our century, claimed theBritish Empire is the kingdom ofGod. But no one makes that claimany longer. How DECEIVED CANTHIS WORLD GET?
The prophet Daniel, who lived600 years before Christ, knew thatthe kingdom of God was a realkingdom-a government rulingover literal PEOPLE on the earth.
Jesus Christ brought additionalknowledge about it that theprophet Daniel might not haveknown. Still, Daniel knew therewas going to be a real, literal kingdom of God on the earth.
Daniel was one of four extraordinary, intelligent and brilliant Jewish lads in the Judean captivity.These four men were stationed inthe palace of King Nebuchadnezzar of the Chaldean Empire, intraining for special responsibilitiesin the Babylonian government.Daniel was a prophet who had beengiven special understanding in visions and dreams (Dan. . 1:17).
Nebuchadnezzar was the firstreal world ruler. He had conquereda vast empire, including the nationJudah. This king had a dream soimpressive it troubled him-movedhim to tremendous concern. He demanded that his magicians, astrologers and sorcerers tell himboth what he had dreamed, andwhat it meant. They could not.They were baffled. Then Danielwas brought before the king.
Daniel disclaimed any more human ability to interpret dreamsthan the Chaldean magicians,"BUT," he said, "there is a GOD inheaven that revealeth secrets, andmaketh known to the king N ebuchadnezzar what shall be in thelatter days" (Dan. 2:28).
First, God's purpose was to re-
veal to this world-ruling humanking that there is a GOD inheaven-that GOD IS SUPREMERULER over , all nations, governments and kings-that God RULESTHE UNIVERSE! It was God whoplaced the cherub Lucifer on thethrone of the earth and Lucifer,who has become Satan the Devil,remains on earth's throne only because God allows it, and only untilGod sends Jesus Christ to sit onthat throne when he removes Satan. This Chaldean king knew onlyabout the many pagan demon gods.He knew nothing of the true livingALMIGHTY God. Like people andrulers, even today, he did not knowthat GOD is the living, REAL. active,RULING and GOVERNING PERSONAGE who actually and literally governs not only what is on earth, butthe UNIVERSE ENTIRELY!
The whole purpose of thisDREAM was to reveal GOD'S GOVERNMENT-the fact that GodRULES-the truth of THE KINGDOMOFGOD-the very thing that is theone and only true GOSPEL OFJESUS
.CHRIST! And, secondly, to reveal-preserved in writing for us TODAv-what is to happen "in thelatter days"-actually within thenext two decades-THIs LAST HALFOF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY!
For US, Todayl
This is no dry, dull, dead writingfor a people of 2,500 years ago.This is LIVING. TREMENDOUS. BIGNEWS for OUR DAY! It is advance news for us, NOW. Newsbefore it happens--of the most·colossal event of all earth's historycertain to occur in your lifetimeduring the very next few years!
This is THE TRUE GOSPEL! It isthe very gospel Christ preached! Itis intended for you and me TODAY!It is vital that you UNDERSTAND!
Read, in your own Bible, Daniel2, verses 28 through 35. In hisdream, this king had seen a vaststatue-larger than any image orstatue ever built by man-sotremendous it was terrifying, evenin a dream. Its head was of finegold, its breast and arms of silver,the belly and thighs of brass, legsof solid iron, feet a mixture of ironand clay. -
Revelation17:12 makes plain the detail that itshall be a union of TEN KINGS ORKINGDOMS that (Rev. 17:8) shallresurrect the old ROMAN EMPIRE.
So, mark carefully the time element! "In the days of thesekings"-in the days of these tennations or groups of nations thatshall , IN OUR TIME. resurrectbriefly the Roman Empire-noticewhat shall happen:
Yes, in OUR TIME!
Now here we have described FOURuniversal world empires-the onlyfour that ever existed! Revelation13 and 17 show that, after the fallof the original Roman Empire,there would be ten revivalsSEVEN of which would be ruledover by a gentile CHURCH-the"daughter" of ancient BABYLONa church claiming to be Christian,but actually named by God"M YSTERY, BABYLON the great"or , more plainly, BABYLONIANMYSTERIES!
Six of those have come and gone.The seventh is now forming-thelast, final, brief resurrection of theRoman Empire by ten Europeangroups or nations. These are revealed in Daniel 2 as the ten toesof iron and clay mixed.
This, then, shall be THE KINGDOM OF GOD!
What IS a Kingdom?
Notice! This is speaking of KING·DOMS. It is referring to kingdomsthat bear rule over the people onearth. It is speaking of GOVERN·MENTS! It is not speaking of ethereal sentiments "set up in thehearts of men." It is not speaking
of churches. It is speaking of the kind of GOV·ERNMENTS that bearRULE and AUTHORITYover nations of PEOPLEhere on earth. It is literal.It is specific. There is nomisunderstanding, here,as to what is meant bythe word kingdom.
There is no misunderstanding the interpretation. GOD gives his owninterpretation through
the prophet Daniel. The greatmetallic image represented nationaland international GOVERNMENTSreal, literal KINGDOMS.
It represented a succession ofworld-ruling governments. Firstwas the head of gold. That represented Nebuchadnezzar and hiskingdom-the Chaldean Empire.After him-later, in time sequence-was to come a second,then a third KINGDOM "which shallbear RULE over all the earth"world empire!
Then, verse 40, the legs of ironrepresent afourth world empire. Itwas to be strong. even as iron isstrong-stronger militarily than itspredecessors. Yet, as silver is lessvaluable than gold, brass than silver, iron than brass, though eachmetal was harder and stronger, thesuccession would deterioratemorally and spiritually. The twolegs meant the fourth empirewould be divided.
After the Chaldean Empirecame the still larger Persian Empire, then the Greco-Macedonian,and fourth, the Roman Empire. Itwas divided, with capitals at Romeand Constantinople.
Now-verse 44! Read it! Get
"Thou," continued Daniel to thishuman emperor, "art this head ofgold. And after thee shall arise another KINGDOM inferior to thee,and another third KINGDOM ofbrass, which shall bear rule over allthe earth" (verses 37-39).
the written Word of God, to ustoday-to reveal important facts ofthe TRUE GOSPEL!
"This is the dream," said Daniel(verse 36), " and we will tell theinterpretation thereof before theking."
This, then, is GOD'S interpretation. It is decidedly not HerbertW. Armstrong's interpretation.Men ought never to interpret theBible. The Bible gives us GOD'SOWN INTERPRETATION! Here it is:
"Thou, 0 king, art a king ofkings"-he was the first realWORLD RULER over a world empire!" ... for the God of heaven hathgiven thee a kingdom, power, andstrength, and glory." God was revealing himself to this humanworld-dictator as the MOST HIGHRuler over al/.
People today, like this Chaldeanking, seem not to think of God asa RULER-as the Supreme Onewho GOVERNS-as the Head ofGOVERNMENT. The Eternal was revealing himself through Daniel toNebuchadnezzar-and through theBible to you and to me TODAY-asa SOVEREIGN . ALL·POWERFUL.GOVERNING GOD who is to beobeyed!
Virtually all civilizations sincethe beginning of history have possessed some form of belief in anafterlife. And not surprisi ngly, attempts to communicate with thedead go back to earliest antiquity.
The belief that th e spi ri ts ofthose who have " passed over" canmake contact with ' the living isknown today as sp iritualism orspiritism. Modern spiritism had itsbirth in Hydesville, New York, inthe middle of the last cent uryspecifically, March 31, 1848.
It is an interesting story. Forseveral nights, mysterious rappingsand strange noises had kept theFox family awake. As far as JohnFox could deter min e , the d isturbing sounds could not be attributed to mice, rats or the wind .
The Fox sisters of Hydesville, New York,gained worldwide attention in 1848 byesta blishing contact with the "spirit world."
in the "spiri t world." Moreover,they said, we can establish communication with those on the " otherside."
This contact is usually made.through the agency of a medium at. a seance. A seance (French for " asitting") is a meeting for the purpose of obtaining spiri t istic phenomena. The medium (usually awoman) is the focal , point of aseance and acts as the organ ofcommunication with "departedspirits."
Seances became the rage in fashionable society throughoutEurope and America in thelast century. In brief, a seanceis conducted as follows:
A small group of people sitin a circle around a table, usually holding or at least touching hands. The room is quietand dark. The medium thengoes into a trance or semitrance, a state resembli ngdeep hypnosis.
While in the trance, themedium purports to con veymessages from the spir itworld to those around thetable. The messages oftencome by way of a "control," adeparted spi rit that associatesitself with the medium andpasses on messages from otherspirits .
Sometimes the mediumsimply repeats to the participants around the table whatshe is told by her "control"or describes what she sees inthe sp irit world . At othertimes, the control spirit or another sp irit speaks d irectlythrough the medium.
On occasion, the participants t hem se lves hear sp ir itvoices coming from outside themedium, often from somewhereoverhead. In rare instances, aspirit creates a vague visible for mfor itself and partially materializes--creating a ghostly apparition .for all to see!
Many have come away fromseances conv inced of the authenticity of the phenomena. Others havesuspected fraud. What is the truth ?
Is communication between the"two worlds" possible?
The famous stage mag icianHarry Houd ini ( 18 7 4- 19 2 6 )
16
sought an answer to this question .He th rew out challenges to mediums to prove to his satisfaction theauthenticity of their activities. Heclaimed he could duplicate bypurely physical means any effectthey produced in the course of aseance.
During the course of 30 years ofwitnessing alleged examples ofcommunications with the "nextworld," Houdini declared he hadnot " found one incident that savored of the genuine."
What Houdini often did uncover
wer e extremely clever frauds andski llful illusions perpetrated bycharlatans and unscrupulous mediums on trusting victims.
Darkened rooms provided theperfect setting- for fraud. Concealed microphones, wires, mirrors, projectors, ventriloquism,sleigh t of hand and other ingenious techniques combined to produce a variety of spectacular effects conv incing to the gullible.Houdini caught scores of embarrassed mediums red-handed insuch frauds.
Based on his investigations ,
Ho udini concluded that spmtismwas riddled with trickery, deceitand fraud. O ther investigators haveagreed that the percentage of fraudis high.
But are all mediums fakes ?By no means! There are many
serious mediums who have stoodup under the most rigorousscrutiny of investigators. Despitemeticulous testing, they have givenno evidence of any type of fraud .
Are these mediums, then, reallyin contact-as they believe- withthe dead?
Spi rit Photographs
The art of photography-inits infancy when modernspiritism was born-sooncame to the aid of spiritists inconvincing the public of lifebeyond the grave.
Hundreds of photographshave been taken over thedecades purporting to showvaguely materialized spiritsactua lly caught by the camera! Many spirit ists consider
. such photos to be ' the outstanding proof of their beliefs.
A large percentage of thesephotos, however, have beenshown to be bogus-the results of " doctored" or retouched negatives, double exposures, trick lighting effectsor other deceptions. But others have stood up to the tests
~ of investigators.~ But again-are these pho~ tos proof of life after death?
Electronic Communication
And now-a spectacular further development in the worldof spiritism.
As mentioned at the beginningof this article, experimentationhas reportedly produced an electronic device enabling the operator to engage in two-way, telepho ne-like conversat ions with thedead- a type of Ouija board witha voice! .
It was the great inventor ThomasEd ison who first conceived the possib ility of instrumental communication with the dead. But experimenters had to admit failure inestablishing an electronic link withthe spirit world-until the late1950s.
Spectators view the reputed materialization of a long-deadwoman during a Philadelphia seance in 1874.
In 1959, the Swedish filmmakerand painter Friedrich Jurgensonplayed back tapes of bird calIs hehad recorded in a Swedish forest.To his astonishment, he heard whathe believed to be his dead mother'svoice on the tape! This began aseries of experiments to recordspirit voices. Hundreds of voiceshave appeared on his tapes.
Other researchers have claimedto have recorded the spirit voices ofChurchill, Hitler, Stalin, Tolstoyand many other famous men andwomen of history. .
Many years of such researchand experimentation have nowproduced the two-way machinepreviously mentioned. The devicetunes in on certain radio frequencies thatprovide · a channelover which "those inthe higher planes"the reputed deadcan convey their messages.
There is no apparent reason to doubtthe sincerity or the integrity of those whohave worked on thisproject or of other researchers in the fieldof EVP (electronicvoice phenomena). Itis unlikely that thevoices have been fakedin any way. There areno indications of fraudor hoax. It is apparentthat the researchersare in actual voicecontact with spirit entities.
Are these the voices of the dead?Some investigators have sug
Many other explanations havebeen suggested for this and otherspirit phenomena-alI of which attimes have probably played a role.But again, not all spirit phenomenacan be adequately explained awayby such theories. There remaincertain manifestations for which noentirely satisfactory explanationhas been offered--other than actual spirit contact.
But has contact been made withthe dead? Or might there be another explanation?
No Immortal Soul
From time to time The Plain
Truth publishes articles challenging the widely held belief in an"immortal soul." The age-old belief in the separate existences ofthe body and the soul can beproved to be without support inthe Bible!
We explain what is the truescriptural definition of the wordsoul. demonstrating that "soul"designates man's physical lifethat a soul is what man is. notwhat he has. Man has no inherent . immortality. The soul ismortal and can die (Ezek. 18:4,20) .
The Bible shows, in both Old
and New Testaments, that the dead"sleep" in insensibility in theirgraves until a future resurrectiona rising from the dead.
Readers often write in, inquiringhow one can explain "ghosts,"seances, spirit photography and re'lated phenomena. If these are notthe spirits of the dead-what arethey? The explanation is found inthe Bible!
World of Spirits
The Bible reveals that there is indeed a world of spirits! But theyare not the spirits of the deadthough some may masquerade asspirits of the dead! This spiritworld is the world of angels-and
demons (falIen angels).Angels were created
by God eons ago--Iongbefore the creation ofthe earth . Thearchangel whom wecalI Lucifer and onethird of these createdangels ultimatelyrebelled against God(Isa. 14; Ezek. 28; IIPet. 2:4; Rev. 12:4).
The disobedient Lucifer became Satan."the Adversary." Theangels who followedhim in rebellion became demons.
~ Satan and his-c demonic cohorts exert~ enormous influence on~ this world. The Bible~ calIs Satan "the god of
this world" (II Cor.4:4). In that role , hehas succeeded in de-ceiving the whole
world (Rev. 12:9).Satan and his demons pretend
to bring light (II Cor. 11:14-15).Demons have, for : millennia,been turning mankind fromtruth into spiritual darkness,falsely calling that darkness"light." The Bible warns of thedangers of humans dabbling inthe world of spirits.
Notice just a few of these passages:
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits [the "control" or"guide" that associates itself with awitch or medium], neither seek af-
Let's be plain! Modernconstitutional monarchyexists largely by publicapprobation-and thatapproval to quite a degreeis contingent on the evidence of solid moral values . In the long run badbehavior simply is not tolerated. Overall England'sHouse of Windsor has seta splendid example.That's why the BritishRoyal Family is so universally admired.
And today 's Queencontinues to commandthe admiration of hersubjects.
The New King and Queen
It was the 10th of December, 1936-the day beforethe Duke of York offi-cially became the newKing. On that day thePrime Minister, StanleyBaldwin, said in the Houseof Commons: "The Crownin this country through thecenturies has been deprived of many of its prerogatives, but today, whilethat is true, it stands formore than it has ever donein history. The importance ofits integrity is, beyond all question, far
greater than it has ever been . . . the .guarantee in this country, so long asit exists in that integrity, againstmany evils" (Parliamentary Debates, Commons, 5th Series, 19361937, emphasis ours).
her." Elizabeth brought effervescence and a fresh spirit into theRoyal Family. Her marriage became a model. The Duke andDuchess' behavior was above reproach-and in sharp contrast tothat of the Prince of Wales.
George V was increasingly displeased with his eldest son-andincreasingly pleased with PrinceAlbert and Elizabeth. Marriage to
Elizabeth was bringingout the best in the Dukeof York. He even beganto conquer his stutter.They rehearsed hisspeeches together.
Anne Morrow haswritten: "The Duke andDuchess of York werebasking in an aura ofachievement in the summer of 1927. They wonthe hearts of the people,and the regard of thatstern taskmaster, theking" (page 68). Perhapsthey were being preparedfor what Providence knewwas to follow. after." This saying sums up theDuke's marriage. It was storybookin every sense of the word.
The Royal Family accepted Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at once. WroteAnne Morrow: "He [George V]sounded surprised that the hesitantBertie [as his family called him]should have found such a winner"(The Queen Mother, page 25,1984). More importantly, "Therewas not a hint of scandal about
The Duke of York proposed twicein the early 1920s-and twice hewas put off. His intended wife wasreluctant, but he was one of thosemen who can only love one woman.The Duke knew she was right. Hepersisted! She surrendered!
In Winston Churchill's words:"I married and lived happily ever
In the days of the Abdicationin 1936, confidence in
English royalty had waned. Yet theroyal biographer Anne Morrow
could happily report:"George VI and his Queen were to
save the monarchy."
Two New Kings in One Year
After Edward did abdicate on 11December, 1936, his brotherPrince Albert, the Duke of York,became George VI. Three Britishkings occupied the throne in 1936.Not since 1483 had the Englishtwo new kings in oneyear. It remained for thenew king to restore confidence. War clouds werelooming in Europe.Steady leadership wassorely needed.
Humanly speaking,George VI seemed illsuited for this great constitutional office. Hetended to be shy and retiring with a frustratingspeech impediment. Helacked the natural confidence of his brother. Hehad never been Prince ofWales. His training wasroyal, but not obviouslydirected to future kingship.
The King himself toldLord Mountbatten: "Thisis terrible, Dickie. I neverwanted this to happen.I'm quite unprepared forit. David [as Edward VIIIwas known to his family]has been trained for it allhis life, whereas I'venever seen a State paper.I'm a naval officer. It'sthe only thing I knowabout" (Majesty, page127). Mountbatten didnot agree. He answered:"George, you're wrong.There is no more fittingpreparation for a kingthan to have been trainedin the Navy."
Sometimes human beings arecalled to take on roles for whichthey may appear unsuited. Conventional wisdom may say, "No." Circumstances often dictate, "Yes."Most possess unrealized resourcesthat have never been fully tapped.
Communication(Continued from page 17)ter wizards , to be defiled bythem . .. " (Lev. 19:31).
"There shall not be found amongyou anyone ... that useth divination [obtaining secret knowledgeby supernatural means] , or an observer of times, or an enchanter, ora witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer [one whoinquires of the dead]. For all thatdo these things are an abominationunto the Lord . . . " (Deut. 18:1012) .
In the New Testament-in Acts16-the apostle Paul exorcised aspirit of divination from a youngwoman.
Now notice a biblical example ofjust how seriously God takesspiritism!
In I Samuel 28, we find an account of an ancient "seance" involving king Saul . of Israel. Sauldesired to know about the ou tcomeof a great battle with thePhilistines in which he was aboutto engage. He inquired of God, butreceived no answer (verse 6). Godrefused to listen to Saul because ofhis rebellious attitude.
Saul then defied God's clearcommands in the law and orderedhis servants: " Seek me a womanthat hath a familiar sp irit. that Imay go to her, and inquire of her"(verse 7).
Saul was told that there was awoman at Endor that had a familiar spirit. She is referred to as awitch in some translations, as amedium in others.
So Saul disguised himself andwent to the woman by night andsaid: "I pray thee, divine unto meby the familiar spirit, and bring mehim up, whom I shall name untothee" (verse 8). The practice of"consulting the dead" was rifeamong ancient Israel's heathenneighbors. Saul had been influenced by their practices.
Now notice what happened.The medium asked whom she
should bring up . Saul said : "Bringme up Samuel" (verse 11) .
The woman then saw a form thatshe believed to be Samuel. Saulhimself did not see the spirit, forhe asked the woman to describe it
20
to him. As a result of the description , Saul " perceived that it wasSamuel" (verse 14) :
The spirit-st ill in vi sible toSaul-then spoke directly to Sauland prophesied of his impendingdefeat at the hands of thePhilistines (verses 18-19).
The spirit that appeared was notSamuel. Samuel was dead (verse3) , and "the dead know not anything" (Eccl. 9:5, 10). At death,one's thoughts perish-as the Bibleplainly teaches (Ps. 146:4) .
Moreover, Scripture tells usthat God refused to answer Saulby prophets (I Sam. 28:6). ButSamuel was a prophet (Acts13:20). The spirit that spoke toSaul thus could not have reallybeen Samuel.
What had appeared to themedium and spoke to Saul wassimply a form that looked likeSamuel-a demon impersonatingSamuel! It was deception. however sincere the medium mayhave been. There is no other explanation within the teachings ofthe Bible!
Saul assumed the demon wasSamuel-just as spiritists assumethey are contacting the spirits ofthe dead.
Saul sinned by seeking a witch.God takes' the sin of spiritism veryseriously. "So Saul died for his transgression . . . " (I Chron. 10:13).
Works of Darkness
Demons are spirits of darkness.Spiritism is a work of darkness.Little wonder that it is normal
. spiritist practice to conduct seancesin a darkened room. Strong liglit,say spiritists, . hinders communications with the spirits. This fact initself should tell them somethingabout what kind of spirits they aredealing with!
One might also ask of spiritistswhy the "afterlife" is apparently soconcerned with such trivia as isoften manifested in seances and"hauntings": knocks and rappings, .eerie noises , screams, table levitating and the like. Is there not moreto this alleged afterlife than theplaying of childish pranks and usually trivial conversation? .
The answer should be clear! It isnot the dead with whom we aredealing!
The dead cannot communicatewith the living! The reason?They're DEAD-not alive in somesort of "spirit world." No such survival is taught anywhere in theBible! (Why not write for our freebooklet Lazarus and the Rich Manfor the explanation to one of themost misunderstood passages inthis regard.)
It is the world of demons-seeking to perpetuate the false doctrineof the immortal soul-that is behind the spirit manifestations inseances, spirit photographs andelectronic voice phenomena. Masquerading as "spirits of the dead,"they deceive the biblically unlearned-just as king Saul was deceived at Endor!
Such manifestations are accomplished by demon power-not bythe Spirit of God! Most spiritistsrefuse to admit this possibility.
Man's True Destiny
There is only one mediator between God and man-Jesus Christ(I Tim. 2:5-6). Mediums and theirfamiliar spirits are not the sourceof reliable spiritual knowledge, butrather perpetuate a false concept ofman's destiny.
The Bible has much to say abouteternal life- and how one can receive it as a gift. But this truth ismuch different than what manyhave been led to believe!
If you would know the TRUTHabout man's destiny, go to theTRUE SOURCE of such knowledgethe Bible-and write for our freebooklets Life After Death? andWhat Will You Be Like in theResurrection?
Do not risk the dangers of dabbling in the spirit world. · Followthe example of the Ephesians,who burned their books of sorcery, magic and divination whenthey heard the truth! (Acts19:19) .
Heed the clear words of theprophet Isaiah (8 :19-20, Moffatttranslation) , who declared:
"When they tell you to consultmediums and ghosts that cheep andgibber in low murmurs, ask them ifa nation should not rather consultits God. Say, ' W hy consult thedead on behalf of the living? Consult the Message and the Counselof God!'" 0
These scriptures tell youPLAINLY that GOD is supremeRULER. They tell you in plainestlanguage that Jesus was born to bea KING-that he . is going to RULEALL NATiONs-that his kingdomshall rule eternally.
But all this is only part of thefantastic, amazing, actually SHOCKING TRUTH about the KINGDOM OFGOD.
The KINGDOM OF GOD will ruleover the peoples and nations of theearth. Yet these mortal peoples andnations will NOT be the kingdom,not even in the kingdom of God.They shall be merely RULED OVERBY IT!
How Utopia Will Cornel
But now let's be specific.Let's see just how tomorrow's
utopia is to be ushered in . Remember, this wonderful world-state willnot be achieved all at once.
Every major step of these sooncoming events is laid bare beforeour eyes in biblical prophecy.
The same Jesus Christ whowalked over the hills and valleys of
he kingdom of Godreal kingdom-agovernment ruling overliteral people onthe earth.
They then shall become the kingdoms-the GOVERNMENTS--of theLord JESuS CHRIST. then KING ofkings over the entire earth.
This makes completely PLAINthe fact that the KINGDOM OFGODis a literal GOVERNMENT. Even asthe Chaldean Empire was a KINGDOM-even as the Roman Empirewas a KINGDOM-SO the KINGDOMOF GOD is a government. It is totake over the GOVERNMENT of theNATIONS of the world.
Jesus Christ was BORN to be aKING-a RULER!
.When he stood, on trial for hislife, before Pilate, "Pilate thereforesaid unto him, Art thou a kingthen? Jesus answered, Thou sayestthat I am a king. To this end wasI born, and for this cause came Iinto the world." But Jesus also saidto Pilate: "My kingdom is not ofthis world"-(John 18:37, 36).HQw amazing-what a tragedythat in church services and gospelpreaching today, one seldom, ifever, hears of Christ as a comingking and world ruler. Spiritualprincipalities and powers of evil(Eph. 6:12) are ruling theworld today. It is these
. earthly governments ofSatan that will be destroyed and replaced byChrist at his SecondComing. Christ's king- (dom is of THEWORLD TOMORROW!
Have you not readwhat the angel proclaimed to Mary, themother of Jesus, prior tohis birth? Jesus told Pi-late he was born to become a KING.The angel of God said to Mary:" ... thou shalt conceive in thywomb, and bring forth a son, andshalt call his name JESUS. He shallbe great, and shall be called theSon of the Highest: and the LordGod shall give unto him theTHRONE of his father David: and heshall reign over the house of Jacobfor ever; and of his kingdom thereshall be NO END" (Luke 1:31-33).
Why do the churches of thisworld never mention any of thesescriptures? Millions have attendedchurches all their lives and neverheard any of these scriptures aboutChrist becoming a king or aboutthe coming kingdom of God.
KingdomofGod(Continued from page 13)
Compare with Revelation 17.Here is pictured a church. Not asmall church-a GREAT church.She rules over "many waters"(verse l),which are described inverse 15 as different nations speaking different languages. She posedas the Church of GOD-whichScripture says (Eph. 5:23; Rev.19:7; Matt. 25:1-10; etc.) is theaffianced "bride" of CHRIST. to bespiritually MARRIED to him at hisSecond Coming.
But she has committed fornication. How? By having direct politica/ union with HUMAN GOVERNMENTS of THIS WORLD! She Ysaton" (Rev. 17:3) 'all seven of theseresurrections of the Roman Empire-called the "Holy RomanEmpire." She RULED OVER the human kingdoms-as a common-lawand unmarried "wife" ruling her
.paramour "husband"-a totallyunnatural and ungodly relationship.
She is, therefore, to "sit on" thislast "head of the Beast"-this finalresurrection of the Roman Empire.It will be a union of church andstate. It is to endure but a veryshort time. It is to FIGHT AGAINSTCHRIST at HIS SECOND COMING!That will be its END.
We see it in process of rising,now. (The members of the European Common Market are probably not the same ten that will resurrect the Holy Roman Empire.)Therefore we are CLOSE to thecoming of Christ! Weare now verynear the END of this world!
Christ to Rule All Nations
When Christ comes, he is comingas KING of kings, ruling the wholeearth (Rev. 19:11-16); and HISKINGDOM-t.he KINGDOM OFGOD-said Daniel, is to CONSUMEall these worldly kingdoms.
Revelation 11: 15 states it inthese words: "The kingdoms of thisworld are become THE KINGDOMSOF OUR LORD. AND OF HIS CHRIST;and he shall reign for ever andever"!
This is THE KINGDOM OFGOD. Itis the end of present governments-yes, and even the UnitedStates and the British nations.
"times of restitution of all things"(Acts 3:19-21). Restitution meansrestoring to a former state or condition. In this case, the restoring ofGod's government on earth, andthus, the restoring of world peace,and utopian conditions.
Present world turmoil, escalatingwars and contentions will climax inworld trouble so great that, unlessGod intervenes, no human fleshwould be saved alive (Matt. 24:22).At its very climax when delaywould result in blasting all lifefrom off this planet, Jesus Christwill return. This time he is comingas divine God. He is coming in allthe power and glory of the universe-ruling Creator (Matt. 24:30;25:31). He is coming as "King ofkings, and Lord of lords" (Rev.19:16), to establish world supergovernment and rule all nations"with a rod of iron" (Rev. 19:15;12:5). Why do the professingChristian churches omit all thesescriptures about Christ coming andof his ruling the earth? Jesus' verygospel was that of the kingdom ofGod he shall then establish onearth. The millions of churchmembers have never heard thesescriptures or the actual gospel ofJesus Christ.
Think of it. The glorifiedChrist-coming in all the splendor,the supernatural power and theglory of God Almighty-coming tosave mankind alive-coming tostop escalating wars, nuclear massdestruction, human pain and suffering-coming to usher in peace,abundant well-being, happiness andjoy for all mankind. But will he bewelcomed by the nations?
World-famous scientists now sayfrankly that the only hope for survival on earth is a supreme worldruling government, controlling allmilitary power. They admit that isimpossible for man to accomplish.Christ is coming to give us justthat.
But will he be welcome?A leading American newsweekly
gave the following surprising appraisal of man's only hope: Theonce optimistic hope of Americans,the article said, for a well-orderedand stable world, is fading. Expenditures close to a trillion dollarshave failed to provide stability.Rather conditions have worsened.
22
This appraisal indicated thatamong officials, the prevailing viewis gaining acceptance that tensionsand world problems are becomingtoo deep-seated to be solved "except by a strong hand from someplace."
"A strong hand from someplace." God Almighty is going tosend a very strong Hand from"someplace" to save humanity!
Christ Unwelcome?
But will humanity shout with joy,and welcome him in frenzied ecstasy and enthusiasm? Will eventhe churches of traditional Christianity?
They will not! They will believe,because the false ministers of Satan(II Cor. 11:13-15) have deceivedthem, that he is the Antichrist. Thechurches and the nations will beangry at his coming (Rev. 11:15with 11:18), and the military forceswill actually attempt to .fight himto destroy him (Rev. 17:14)!
The nations will be engaged inthe climactic battle of the comingWorld War III, with the battlefront at Jerusalem (Zech. 14:1-2)and then Christ will return. In supernatural power he will "fightagainst those nations" that fightagainst him (verse 3). He will totally defeat them (Rev. 17:14)!"His feet shall stand in that dayupon the mount of Olives," a veryshort distance to the east ofJerusalem (Zech. 14:4).
How NatIons Will Submit
When the glorified all-powerfulChrist first comes again to earth,the nations will be angry. The military forces gathered at Jerusalemwill try to fight him! I said "try."But far more powerful armies follow Christ from heaven-all theholy angels (Rev. 19:14, identifiedin Matt. 25:31).
Want to see a description of thatbattle-and what will happen tothose hostile human armies?
In Revelation 17, the armies ofthe now-rising United States ofEurope-the resurrected RomanEmpire-are referred to in verse14: "These shall make war with theLamb [Christ], and the Lamb shallovercome them: for he is Lord oflords, and King of kings...."
But how will he overcome them?
We find that in the 14th chapter ofZechariah:
"And this shall be the plaguewherewith the Lord will smite allthe people [armies] that havefought against Jerusalem; theirflesh shall consume away whilethey stand upon their feet, andtheir eyes shall consume away intheir holes, and their tongue shallconsume away in their mouth"(Zech. 14:12).
Perhaps it is even plainer in theRevised Standard Version: "Andthis shall be the plague with whichthe Lord will smite all the peoplesthat wage war against Jerusalem:their flesh shall rot while they arestill on their feet, their eyes shallrot in their sockets, and theirtongues shall rot in their mouths."
This rotting of their flesh offtheir bones will happen almost instantaneously-while they are stillon their feet.. What a divine retribution
against armies that will fightagainst Christ. What a demonstration of the divine power with whichthe glorified Christ will rule allnations. Rebellion against God'slaw and God's rule must, andspeedily will be, put down.
Can you realize that every unhappiness; every evil that has cometo humanity, has been the result oftransgressing God's law?
If no one ever had any other godbefore the true God; if all childrenwere reared to honor, respect andobey their parents, and all parentsreared their children in God'sways; if no one ever allowed thespirit of murder to enter his heart,if there were no wars, no killing ofhumans by humans; if all marriages were kept happy and therewere no transgressions of chastitybefore or after marriage; if all hadso much concern for the good andwelfare of others that no one wouldsteal-and we could throwaway alllocks, keys and safes; if everyonetold the truth-everyone's wordwere good-everyone were honest;if no one ever coveted what was notrightfully his, but had so muchoutgoing concern for the welfare ofothers that he really believed it ismore blessed to give than to receive-what a happy world wewould have!
In .such a world, with all loving
Satan will then be restrained fromcontinuing to broadcast it, whathas been acquired as habit will notbe automatically removed.
Yet God has made us humansfree moral agents. He has given uscontrol over our own minds, exceptas we may be blinded by Satan'spull of evil by deception.
But no longer will earth's mortalhumans be deceived! Now the allpowerful Christ, and the immortalsaints ruling under him, will beginremoving the scales that haveblinded human minds.
That is why I say completeutopia cannot be ushered in all atonce. Multiple millions will stillhold to the attitude of rebellionof vanity, lust and greed. But withChrist's coming shall begin theprocess of re education-of openingdeceived minds-of undeceiving
.minds, and bringing them to a voluntary repentance.
From the time of Christ's supernatural takeover, and Satan's banishment, God's law and the word ofthe Eternal shall go forth fromZion, spreading over the wholeearth (Isa. 2:3) .
The 6,000-year sentence Godplaced on Adam's world, of beingcut off from God, will be ended.Christ will begin calling all mortalson earth to repentance and spiritualsalvation! God's Holy Spirit shallflow out from Jerusalem (Zech.14:8) .
What glory! A new day shallhave dawned. Peace shall sooncome. Men shall turn from the wayof "get" to the way of "give"God's way of love .
A NEW CIVILIZAnON shall nowgrip the earth!
But what kind of a new worldtomorrow will from then be developed? In Isaiah 2:2-4 and in Micah4:1-3 it says: "And it shall come topass in the last days, that themountain of the Lord's house shallbe established in the top of themountains, and shall be exaltedabove the hills; and all nations shall
Human Nature Not to Disappearat Once
But that does not mean that theacquired satanic attitude will disappear from .human minds immediately. The multiplied millions shallhave acquired it. And even though
This most glorious event in allearth's history-the supernaturalmajestic descent to earth; in theclouds, of the glorified all-powerfulChrist-will at long last put an end
to the subtile, deceitful,invisible rule of Satan.
The coming of Christin supreme glory as Kingof kings and Lord of lordsis recorded in Revelation19. But what other greatevent will have to takeplace before there can bepeace, HAPPINESS andJOy on the earth? SATANthe Devil will have to beremoved from the throneof the earth. '
.But in Revelation 20: 1-3, the advance news is recorded: " And I sawan angel come down from heaven,having the key of the bottomlesspit and a great chain in his hand.And he laid hold on . .. that oldserpent, which is the Devil, andSatan, and bound him a thousandyears, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, andset a seal upon him, that he shoulddeceive the nations no more, tillthe thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must beloosed a little season."
The day of man, swayed, deceived, misled by Satan for 6,000years, will be over.
No longer will Satan be able tobroadcast through the air into thespirit in man. No longer shall he beable to inject into unsuspecting humans his satanic nature-which wehave been misled into calling "hu-man nature." -
way not natural to man-the way of GIVE. JesusChrist lived that way of give during His humanlifetime on the earth. It is the way that produceshappiness, peace and joy. J erusalem's sensitiveTemple Mount is
increasingly becoming apoint of conflict betweenJews and Muslims. Jewishact ivists are demanding thatIsrael establish direct controlover the holiest site inJudaism, which is also oneof Islam's holiest places.
Israelis, however, aredivided over whether Jewishlaw allows entry to the area,which was captured byIsrael in 1967 but turnedover to Muslim religiousauthorities to administer.Israel's chief rabbis andmost rabbinical authoritiesforbid Jews from enteringthe Temple Mount area forfear of violating its sanctityby inadvertently walking overthe site of the " Holy ofHolies," the innermostsanctuary of their ancient
Now, small butincreasingly vocal religiousgroups have begun lobbyingfor Jewish prayer on theTemple Mount. Some areeven advocating thebuilding of a synagoguethere.
Islands receive most of theireconomic vitality from fishswimming near their coasts.These island states all claim" exclusive economic zones"of 200 miles around theircoasts . The United Statesdoes not recognize theseclaims, as far as tuna isconcerned .
The U.S. position angersthese island nations. Theyinsist American fishing boatsply their waters illegally inviolation of international"Law of the Sea"regulations. These boatsconstantly fish within the200-mile zones withoutpaying for the right to fish inthese waters.
The United States, whichalso claims a 200-mile zone,points to the irony of anisland perhaps only 15 mileswide with only a fewthousand people and no
Collectively, these islandsin the Pacific claim about5.6 million square miles ofsovereign territory-almosttwice the size of thecont inental UnitedStates-closing off much ofthe Pacific to open fishing.
The older generation ofisland leaders , whoremember the U.S. Marinesliberation in World War II,have been largelysucceeded by youngerleaders susceptible to Sovietoffers of economicassistance.
C ompared with crimelevels in other
developed countries, that ofNew Zealand is low.
But the chilling fact iscrime is increasing at analarming rate.
Overall crime in NewZealand rose 6.5 percent in1985 over the previous year.But last year's record 61murders represented anincrease of 110 percentover 1984. Fewer murderswere of the traditional type,meaning the result ofpassion or domestic strife.Much more frequent weremindless, cold-bloodedkillings, the kind most fearedby the public.
One in every fiveoffenders was age 14 to 16and one in three wasbetween the ages of 17 and20. The March 7, 1986, NewZealand Herald editorialized:
In an article appearing inThe New England Journal ofMedicine, Dr. Grundy pointsout that both bloodcholesterol levels andincidents of coronary heartdisease are relatively low inthe Mediterranean countries,such as Greece and Italy,compared to other areas.This, says Dr. Grundy, isdue to a traditional diet highin olive oil.
TEEN PREGNANCY(Continued from page 6)together, so society should providethem with free--or very low costcontraceptives, and if necessary,abortions." In addition some ex-
" perts want young people exposed topublic sex education startingaround age 5.
Little or no mention of moralityor responsibility for one's actions,or that this form of behavior couldbe wrong!
The sexual fantasies presentedyoung people inadequately revealthe real world. Teens constantlysee idealized, problem-free, boygirl situations, showing how glorious they feel about each other, howmuch in love they are as a couple.
But the real world is different.In the United States, for example,an estimated one-half millionteenagers contracted gonorrhea lastyear. Syphilis and genital herpesare at epidemic levels in the 1980s.
M iscarriages, stillbirths, congenitally deformed children and casesof blindness, deafness and muchmore have been caused by sexuallytransmissible diseases acquiredthrough premarital or extramaritalsex. Not to mention depression,anxiety and a feeling of loneliness-like Sally-when a partnerleaves.
A pregnant girl terminates thelife of her innocent unborn child byabortion primarily to conceal theresult of her permissiveness. And ifshe keeps the baby, she usuallyfaces poverty, if forsaken by thefellow . If she receives no help fromher own father or mother, an unmarried teenage mother finds theonly alternative is welfare.
And if the young parents-to-bedecide on marriage, they don'thave a rudimentary economic foundation to support themselves. Al most all such teen marriages end indivorce.
No, it's a far cry from the onesided media portrait. Free love orfree sex is not free. The debitsincurred are venereal disease, illegitimate babies, abortions, forcedmarriages or forced separations,upset or broken homes and brokenrelationships, scars carried even after this life-style is discontinued.Teenage boys learn too late they
September 1986
have established irresponsiblehabits that will haunt them the restof their lives.
The Neglected Solution
The consequences of teenage sexual experimentation are far -reaching, often permanently scarring,physically and mentally. Socialworkers grappling with the problem recommend education inschool. If parents seem afraid toget involved, then someone has toteach them.
However the tragedy is notsolved solely by sex education inschool. The tragedy goes back toparents, who a generation agoblazed new trails, who began topractice sexual freedom, and todayare embarrassed to talk to theirchildren about sex.
One mother, anticipating herdaughter's permissiveness, draggedher down to the local clinic to acquire contraceptives. "She's goingto do it anyway, and I don't wanther coming horne pregnant," is herpathetic reason. This is not the wayto educate children.
Parents, you need to guide youroffspring, fully discussing all aspects of sex thoughtfully, candidlyand openly according to eachchild's level of understanding. Ifyou want help in providing thisinformation, why not request ourfree book The Missing Dimensionin Sex. Your copy is on reserve foryou in our mailing room.
And to teenagers, there is additional help and advice freely available for you . The irony is, thisadvice was understood, and livedby, long before you were born; itbecame neglected and yet it appliestoday. This advice comes out of theHoly Bible. Within its pages, sexual advice to teenagers is revealedplainly and unencumbered.
What a tragedy, many teenshave little knowledge of the Bible.God put laws in place from thebeginning to help today's teenager.These laws show young people howto live. God set out certain rules ofbehavior that show what is rightand what is wrong. And how andwhen to use one's sexuality.
This authoritative Word states:"Flee fornication" (I Cor. 6:18,Authorized Version). Or, in modern terms, say , "NO!"
The apostle Paul understood theenormous problem of peer pressurewhen he wrote: "Not to keep company with anyone . . . who is a fornicator ..." (I Cor. 5:11, RevisedAuthorized Version, except wherenoted).
In addition , the book ofProverbs-an instruction manualwritten by a father to his children-teems with many warningsagainst embracing permissive sex.
God established basic laws andprinciples to protect and sanctifymarriage. One of the Ten Commandments says: "You shall not "commit adultery" (Ex. 20 :14). Theseventh commandment directly forbids adultery as violating the sacredrights of the marriage union. But thecommandment also covers in principle all other forms of illicit sex.
What of those who continue toteach it's OK to indulge in permissive sex? "Do not be deceived .Neither fornicators . .. nor adulterers . . . will inherit the kingdom ofGod" (I Cor. 6:9-10).
Few realize God gives us twochoices-two basic ways of life. "Ihave set before you life and death,blessing and cursing . .." (Deut.30:19). Then God commands us tochoose life (verse 19). To theirhurt many humans choose wrongly.
Authorities, social experts, educators and religious leaders whocondone teenage permissiveness asnormal or healthy are in violationof basic biblical law. You shouldignore them.
God's Purpose in Sex
God created sex to be a private,loving, binding relationship between a husband and a wife, notcasual sex partners.
Sexual relations within marriagebecome a unifying force, something beautiful and rewarding.Outsiders can see the result-inhappy faces and the sense of loyalty to one another-and in anticipation of children that may comealong.
Perhaps you can't change societynow. But be courageous to goagainst the flow. Maintain your integrity. Don't give in. Don't compromise. Allow God to bestowupon you his rewards by obeyinghim. You'll never regret it.
Choose life! D
Why THE PLAIN TRUTHHas No Subscription PriceFor more than half a century The Plain Truth has given its readers
an understanding of how a world surcharged with incredible progresscan be so afflicted with appalling troubles.
Yet this magazine of understanding you are now holding in yourhands is made available without a subscription or newsstand price.
Why?When Herbert W. Armstrong first conceived of the idea, in 1927, of
publishing a magazine called The Plain Truth, he believed it must bea different kind of magazine. It would have no outside advertising, noprice. Mr. Armstrong had learned that God says we should "buy thetruth, and sell it not" (Prov. 23:23) . Indeed, he learned that God's wayis simply the way of " give."
Today, The Plain Truth is a mass-circulation magazine spanning theglobe in seven languages with a circulation in English alone of morethan seven million copies monthly.
So many ask: "How can you publish such a high-quality magazinewithout advertising revenue?"
The answer is as simple as it is astonishingI It is a paradox. JesusChrist's message of world peace-his gospel-cannot be sold likemerchandise. Yet it does cost money to publish Christ's TRUTH andmail it to all inhabited continents on earth. It does have to be paid for!This is Christ's work. We solve this problem Christ's way!
Jesus said, "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached [orpublished-Mark 13:10, Authorized Version] in all the world for awitness unto all nations" (Matt. 24: 14) at this time, just before the endof this civilization, this age of human governments. A price must bepaid for printing the magazine, for postage, for the television and radiobroadcasts, for the Ambassador College Bible CorrespondenceCourse and other literature.
But HOW?Christ forbids us to sell it to those who receive it : "Freely ye have
received," said Jesus to his disciples whom he was sending toproclaim his message, "freely give." " It is more blessed," he said,"to give than to receive. " .
God's way is the way of love-and that is the way of giving. ThePlain Truth is provided free of charge through the tithes and offeringsof the membership of the Worldwide Church of God and others.
As those of you who had been receiving the 48-page edition know,The Plain Truth is now 32 pages worldwide. In several major nationsthe 1986 postage rates for magazines have risen drastically, by about25 percent. To keep your Plain Truth subscription coming to your homefreely each month we have had to cut the weight of the magazine forthe present to keep within our postal budgets worldwide.
TRADE WARS(Continued from page 4)
The economic linkage betweenJapan and the Common Market isdestined to grow, especially as bothexperience difficulties in their relat ions with t he United States.Jacques Delor, president of the European Commission, recently remarked that the U .S. can no longerbe expected to serve as the locomotive for the world's economy. "It isclear that Japan and Europe musttake up the slack," he added.
Dr. W. Dekker, president ofPhilips, the European electronicsgiant, told the Mainichi DailyNews that "global cooperation willbe of interest to both regions"-referring to Japan and Europe. "Thatmeans that I would like to seemuch more Japanese investment inEurope. .. . In my opinion, Japan isnow beginning a new phase of internationalization."
Budding cooperation with-andcompetition from-the Japanese,moreover , is accelerating calls byexperts in Europe for the continentto complete its long-stalled plansfor economic unity.
A European Community Commission "White Paper" last Juneset out a detailed timetable toachieve a full economic union ofthe 12 EC states by 1992.
The pressure of both Americanand Japanese competition, reportsthe Mainichi Daily News, " willcreate an enhanced awareness ofthe urgent need for a Communityapproach in Europe . . . [to implement] the decisions set out in theWhite Paper."
Watch for the economic axis between Tokyo and Brussels (ECheadquarters) to accelerate in themonths and years ahead. Watchalso as the y en and the deutschemark-and eventually the EC'sECU (European Currency Unit)replace the dollar as the kingpin ofworld trade.
Commission President Delor, inhis interview with the MainichiDaily News, looked well into thefuture when he remarked that " theEC Commission will strive, step bystep, to develop the. role of theECU to transform it progressivelyinto an international currency, the'same as the yen ."
28
With America retreating intoeconomic isolation to its ownhurt, watch Europe and Japan assume, for a short while in thisend-time age, center stage globalattention.
Trade conflicts will spill overinto the strategic sphere. Demandswill increase in Washington to cut
military links to both Western Europe and Northeastern Asia/Japan.This will force both regions to dofar more in their own defense, anominous consequence for U .S. security.
The world is indeed heading forsignifican t geopolitical real ignments. 0
Acid Rain
Like so many articles onacid rain you refer to sulphurdioxide mixing with moist ureto form sulphuric acid . Sorry,but it is an incontrovertibleelementary chemical fact thatsulphur dioxide is insoluble inwater . It will not dissolve inwater (or mix with it) toform sulphuric acid .
In any case even if it diddissolve, the simple equationH20 (water) + S02 (sulphurdioxide) cannot equa l H2S04(sulphuric acid) as, to put itsimpl y, there is a (oxygen)short.
It is sulphur trioxide (S03)-which can provide the missingextra "a" and producesulphuric acid. Sulphurtr ioxide dissolves readily inwater, but sulphur trioxide isonly a very minor constituentof industrial emissions .
Som e sulphur dioxide iscatalysed in nature to sulphurtrioxide by lightning andother means and adds to theother relatively smalI amountfrom original emissions . Thesequantities of sulphur trioxidedo produce some acid rainbut sulphur dioxide itself doesnot and cannot.
P.R. AllenNorth Tawton, Devon
«It would (or should) comeas a surprise to students tobe told that sulfur dioxide(S 02) is not soluble in water.A characteristic of anonmetal is that it is an acidformer. The basic laboratoryexperiment to demonstratethis is to burn sulfur in pureoxygen , collect the gas(sulfur dioxide) and dissolvethe gas in distilled water.The distilled water is thentested with blue litmus paperand it turns pink indicatingan acid.
However. sulfur dioxide.though not as soluble assulfur trioxide, is fairly
soluble in water. It formssulfurous acid (H;zS03) notsulfuric acid (H;zS0 4). But,the sulfur dioxide in theatmosphere readily reactswith atmospheric oxygen toform the trioxide. "Sulfurdioxide in polluted air reactsrapidly with oxygen to formsulfur trioxide in thepresence of certain catalysts.Particulate matter, orsuspended microparticles,such as ammonium nitrateand elemental sulfur. act asefficient catalysts for thisoxidation." (Principles ofChemistry, Davis. Gailey andWhitten, page 718).
Most chemical reactionsare more complex than theequations generally imply.But the reactants and theend products are all thatmost people are interested inand the reactant here issulfur dioxide, and the endproduct is sulfuric acid-amain constituent of acid rain.
Bible-Superstition orAuthority?
I have read a veryinteresting article written byMr . Herbert W. Armstrong,entitled "T heBible-Superstition orAuthority?"
As a matter of fact , onNovember 2, 1917, thewell-known BalfourDeclaration was signedassigning as a homeland forthe Jews the territory ofPalestine, and making it thuspossible for them to return totheir ancient promised landafter nearly 2,000 years ofpersecutions. In spite of thatofficial Declaration, theBritish only alIowed the entryin Palestine of 500,000 Jewswith special certificates;instead of some 5-6 milIion.Had this not been the case,there is no doubt at alI thatthe terrible genocideperpetrated by Hitler and hishordes would welI have beenavoided.
Famine
A most captivating articlewas "Famine on OurDoorstep?" Famine must begiven as the most importantamong natural disasters inthis overpopulated 20thcentury. It is realIy verypainful to see people dyingbecause of hunger. TheAfrican leaders must be
uselessly losing fabulous sumsof money in buyingarmaments. Instead, the ycould have used the money infood production. On the othe rhand the Governments of theThird World must be alsoblamed for not educatingtheir population aboutdemography. People are dyingof hunger, but they arecontinuing to increase worldpopulation. This shows theirtotal ignorance of "FamilyPlanning Education."
Maybe this article " Famineon Our Doorstep?" will havesome impact on theirmentality.
Plain Truth Above Poli t ics
I must admit that I havehad doubt s about thenonpolitical standing of ThePlain Truth . That is why Iwas very pleased to readKeith Stump's article "ThePlain Truth Is AbovePolitics."
My doubts sprang from afeeling I had when I readHerbert Armstrong's Successbook, which was so kindlyforwarded to me. A veryprominent political war-figuredated from pre-World War IIdays, Winston Churchill, wasbeing quoted as a successfulman.
After reading the saidarticle I realise that I amoversensitive because of theEnglish/Boer war in the1900s and the subsequentoppression of the Afrikanersin this land .
Thank you for making meunderstand and bringing backbalance in my thinking. If westrive for world peace inwhich God's principles willreign supreme, we will notlose our perspective becauseof past wrongs.
