Dear Villagers,

Are you interested in becoming more involved with your Village? Ø Do you have a desire to write for The Pink Sheet? Ø Are you a graphic designer with a few extra hours? Ø Is photography a passion for you? Ø Are you skilled at getting advertising for a publication?

The Pink Sheet is the Voice of the Village, and you can become part of our team!

Villagers have chosen to call Gates Mills home for several reasons: the natural beauty of the valley, the easy access to downtown, and the Village’s rich history and community spirit. Community spirit and involvement strengthen our social fabric. Interacting with fellow residents for a common goal or just the plain enjoyment of social activities weaves the threads of our social fabric closer together. The more frequent the interactions, the tighter the weave and the stronger the overall community. Unlike many places in the country, Gates Mills already has a framework of clubs, groups and organizations to make such interactions easy. The time devoted to Village pursuits can be as little or as much as you like. You merely need to decide which activity suits your fancy!

As a rather creative example of getting involved, several years ago longtime resident Mitzi Seith, now in Sarasota, Florida, thought the Village could use a few reminders about living green and respecting our environment. Mitzi thought The Pink Sheet could have articles on recycling and all matters green written by The Green Fox—so as to carry on the theme of the fox in the Village. I was delighted when Jennifer Pinto answered the call for a new Green Fox to write for The Pink Sheet. Jennifer united her passion for the environment and sustainability with writing for The Pink Sheet. Thank you, Jennifer! Be sure to read her article on water in this issue. Our social fabric is stronger for her contribution.

Now, I am hoping a villager with ad sales expertise will step up! Maybe a graphic artist, a photographer or layout editor, too? My fingers and toes are crossed. You can email me: [email protected].

POINTS OF PRIDE: Cool Spaces

FROM THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER ISSUE

Gates Mills is known for beautiful houses generously sited on rolling woodlands. This Palladian-style home on Brigham Road is helping to tell that story: the house was recently featured locally in The Plain Dealer’s Cool Spaces. Designed by architect and resident Charlie Belson for his family, the home also appeared nationally in both Period Homes Magazine and Architectural Digest. (PHOTO COURTESY OF KAREN EAGLE AT HOWARD HANNA).

Points of Pride

The Pink Sheet has had several inquiries about one-time ads or posts in the newsletter. To address this need we have created a special page to:

1. honor achievement or celebrate special anniversaries, and

2. announce special events of interest to the residents of Gates Mills such as pet projects, special fundraisers, or other opportunities.

Here are the rules: 1. Any Villager could buy a one- time ad that might acknowledge a successful year for Wildcat Tennis, post a favorite photograph or Honor a Graduate, etc. 2. A local non-profit wanting to place a one-time ad could buy space on this page. 3. Sizes are the same as ads and are listed on the back cover of The Pink Sheet. Pricing:

1⁄4 page: $ 50. vertical or horizontal

1⁄2 page: $ 100. vertical or horizontal

full page: $ 200. Questions: [email protected] or [email protected].

Village of Gates Mills Dear Villagers, Our summer has gone by fast! Fall is on the horizon after a very active July and August! July brought us our wonderful July 4th Parade. The Gates Mills Improvement Society does a fantastic job organizing and funding our special traditions. Your membership is vital in order to keep the Parade, Christmas Eve, and other supported events alive. The Nature Camp had a great 8-week run. The weather was good for all planned events. I received many positive compliments, feedback and letters about the Camp and the staff. We had our Annual Summer Band Concert on Sunday, July 22nd. It is always a lovely event. The new band, Red Light Roxy, was terrific! There were balloons, ice cream, popcorn and sidewalk chalk available for all to enjoy. We would love to have more people come out for the event. Please call me with any ideas or suggestions. New ideas are always welcome. I completed the return of archived house plans to every house we had them for. In doing this, I discovered we have a problem that I am really worried about. We contract with Mayfield Village for EMS services. House numbers on some mailboxes are not readable or may be missing a number. Some homes have no mailbox, therefore a yardmarker with the house number should be clearly visible from the street. Everyone needs to have a number. Gone are the days of just knowing each house by name. If you are on a street that is a through street, it needs to be visible from both directions. Please replace your numbers if they are in disrepair or unreadable. When you need EMS and they cannot find your house number, your safety is at risk! Schools are back in session, please watch for busses and children in your travels. Looking and hoping for one of our beautiful fall seasons!

Gates Mills Police Department Proud to Serve…Sworn to Protect

From Your Police Department: As the summer is winding down and children are heading back to school, I want to remind everyone to closely monitor your speed when driving through our school zones. The beginning of the school year is the time when children are at an increased risk for pedestrian, and motor vehicle related accidents. Thank you for your help in keeping the Village roadways safe. As you may have read in the local newspapers, Gates Mills, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, and Highland Heights have partnered with the Mayfield City School District to place a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) in each community where a school is located. Ptl. Arch Kimbrew has been selected to fulfill this important role for us at Gates Mills Elementary School. Additionally, Ptl. Kimbrew will make frequent visits throughout the day to the Gates Mills Environmental Center on County Line Road which is also part of the Mayfield City School District. We anticipate Ptl. Kimbrew beginning full-time in the schools soon. Ptl. Kimbrew’s responsibilities will include building security, safety planning, some educational programs, fostering relationships with students, parents, and staff, etc. We believe there is a great benefit to both the village and the schools. During the summer months, Ptl. Kimbrew will provide additional manpower and help us cover shifts of vacation time when we typically are the busiest. Ptl. Kimbrew will be attending School Resource Officer (SRO) training in the future in Columbus, Ohio. Ptl. Kimbrew will do a great job for Gates Mills and the Mayfield Schools and we are very excited about the partnership! Congratulations on Ptl. Kimbrew’s achievement. Ptl. Dylan Hustosky, our friend and fellow officer, was involved in tragic family incident while off duty at his home. As a result, he will be off work indefinitely while he is recovering. Dylan is a 4-year veteran of the police department who does an outstanding job. We wish Dylan a speedy recovery. Until next month – Proud to serve…Sworn to Protect

Yours in Service, Gregg Minichello Chief of Police (440) 423-4405 ext. 112 [email protected]

Gates Mills Elementary School kicked off the school year with a back to school Ice Cream Social on Monday, August 13th. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade celebrated the end of summer with an ice cream sundae and reconnected with old and new friends on the Gates Mills playground. Students also had an opportunity to meet their new teachers, visit classrooms and drop off school supplies. The first day of school was Tuesday, August 14th.

We are excited to welcome Sue Stephenson as our new first grade teacher. Ms. Stephenson joins us with twenty-six years of experience and taught second grade at Center Elementary last year. Welcome Ms. Stephenson!

“Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can.” September is National Preparedness Month! Now is the time to make sure you are prepared for emergencies. If you wait until an emergency happens it’s too late to collect the supplies you will need or to prepare plans necessary to keep your family safe. At the bottom of the page I have included some helpful links for more information on Emergency Planning. Also you’ll find links to apps for First-aid, finding the closest Emergency Room, and personal safety. If you read the online version of the Pink Sheet you can “click” on these links and will be directed to the sites. An important yet often overlooked part of emergency planning includes a Family Communication

Plan. It’s vital to select both a local and an out-of-state emergency contact person. The local contact should be a family member that is easy to contact and readily available. Their job is to coordinate the location of all family members and advise them of the location to meet. The out-of-state contact has the same job and is needed because if a disaster takes place in the immediate area, the local telephone, cell phone, and paging companies may be overloaded but long distance service may still function. Both text messaging and pictures sent by cell phones use “burst” technology and may work even if your cell call won’t connect. This means that you can send a text message or even a picture of yourself and family members in front of your meeting place to the rest of the family. It’s been one year since we launched our “new” Emergency notification app for mobile devices called Your 911. Many villagers have download the app which routes your emergency call directly to our dispatch center saving minutes of time during an emergency. If you haven’t already done so, please download the app today. Look for the purple icon!

The Green Fox asks:

By Jennifer Pinto

It's a hot summer day, you’re thirsty so you saunter over to the sink, turn on the faucet and voilà—out comes clean water! It’s a miracle when you stop to think about it. Especially when you really start to think about it. We are unbelievably lucky to have access to clean drinking water, and its something that we all take for granted because its readily available and fairly inexpensive.

However, here are some startling statistics from the World Health Organization: S 2.1 billion people globally lack safe water at home S 263 million people spend more than 30 minutes per round trip colleting water S 844 million people do not have basic drinking water services

AND BY 2025, HALF OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION WILL BE LIVING IN WATER-STRESSED AREAS.

We have something here in Northeast Ohio that so few other places on earth have. And I don’t mean a professional football team with a 2 year win rate of 3%. The reference is to Lake Erie! The Great Lakes accounts for 20% of the world’s fresh water, and Lake Erie is where the Cleveland Division of Water finds its source which is why we ALL have a vested interest in preserving and protecting it.

The time to evaluate our basic behavior regarding water usage is now instead of in the not-so-distant future when much of the globe will be faced with water scarcity due to fluctuating atmospheric conditions (fancy words for climate change), higher temperatures and increased demand. Here is what you can do starting today to make yourselves and your family better stewards of the region’s water supply:

S Don’t let the water run needlessly when brushing your teeth or shaving. Bathroom faucets can run between 1-2 gallons a minute which can generate a tremendous amount of water waste. As of 2010 there were 4.53 million people in Northeast Ohio, the majority who presumably brush their teeth at least once daily. You don’t need to be a math whiz to know that a lot of water might needlessly be going down the drain.

S Turn off your inground sprinkler systems during weather events that feature precipitation (fancy word for rain), and when positioning your manual sprinkler, remember that your driveway is naturally drought resistant.

S Use the water collected in dehumidifiers to water plants and shrubs.

S Fix those leaks! According to the EPA, minor water leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of wasted water each year which is equal to annual household water use in 11 million homes.

S Try eating less meat. This is less obvious, but lower meat consumption can actually make a major difference. Not only does the meat industry have an enormous carbon footprint, but it also consumes a mind-boggling amount of water. For instance, 1,800 gallons of water are needed to produce just one pound of beef. That means that producing roughly 7 pounds of beef used enough water to fill up an average sized residential swimming pool. Data on how many actual cows that pool could accommodate was unavailable. Speaking of pools…..

S Cover your pool to reduce evaporation. The Dept. of Energy reports that this can cut the amount of replacement water needed by 30-50%! Just remember to remove the cover before diving in.

S If you are considering a bathroom or kitchen remodel, look for WaterSense Certified products. You save water without sacrificing performance.

S Be careful about what goes down the drain. Use non-toxic cleaning products and avoid bleach.

S Aim for showers of 5 minutes or less.

S When rinsing food in a colander (or just waiting for the tap to get hot), capture the water in a pitcher or bowl. Use that water to water your plants.

S Use a rain barrel to capture water coming off your roof. Use this water for watering your plants, too.

Water is essential for survival. With all the daily worries we encounter, where to find clean water is fortunately not one of them. But that is the reality of today. The reality of tomorrow could look very different unless we become conscious of how we use water and begin to treat our natural water resources as a gift, and not as a given.

The Garden Club property was buzzing during August. Six youth joined Youth Chair, Margaret Duff, and her committee for a succulent dish garden workshop. The children’s dish gardens will be featured in our Flower Show on October 12th.

Guest night was a beautiful evening filled with live music, great fun, wonderful friendship and delicious food! What more could we ask for on a summer night? Many thanks to our Chairs, Christine McLaughlin, Nancy Hooker, Nancy McGuinnis, and their committee! It was a delightful evening.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on our September 11th field trip to Arcola Creek Nursery. It should be an exciting trip.

I know summer is coming to a close when my gorgeous Dahlias are blooming and the Chrysanthemums are beginning to open. Fall is such a spectacular time of year.

Feel free to stop by the cottage! I will be enjoying the Monarchs. Best in gardening, Kelly

What It REALLY Means to Build a Functional Fitness Community

Joe Petrella Gates Mills Fitness 216-470-3572 [email protected]

In the modern era of exercise, health, and wellness, functional fitness is the new craze. Many of the old powerhouse “globo gyms” have seen a large drop off in memberships to smaller, community based fitness facilities. Whether their clients have gone to CrossFit®, Soul Cycle, Orangetheory Fitness, or a smaller boutique gym, one thing is clear: Community based functional fitness is the

new craze, and it’s here to stay.

The question some might be asking is, “Why have so many people gone toward a group fitness training model, and what exactly does a ‘fitness community’ entail?”

At Gates Mills Fitness LLC, over the past seven years we’ve been centrally focused on the client experience. From the first impression when a client walks into the gym, until the time class is done, the goal has always been to make this the best hour of someone’s day.

We are literally trying to melt their stress away.

This is not just about physical exercise, but also about obtaining mental clarity and peace of mind when someone is done with class. The community is a place where the vulnerable feel comfortable to fail as often as they succeed. It’s through failure that true growth occurs, and our mission has been to create a place where this is not only acceptable, but where pushing yourself is encouraged, as that is where progress is made. At the end of the day, the community is a place where friends of all ages and walks of life come together to workout with one common goal in mind, “be better than yesterday.” The euphoria and sense of accomplishment our members feel creates an addiction to our program.

Outside of the culture, people gravitate towards functional fitness for the physical results.

You might ask yourself, “why would anyone go into a group fitness class if they can workout on their own for a fraction of the cost at a ‘globo’ gym?”

Working out as part of a community keeps people motivated, and there is a certain level of accountability that will never be experienced by training alone. The camaraderie and relationships built help to create intensity and purpose in one’s workouts which yield results.

In addition, the classes are always led by an instructor who is there to motivate and educate. There is a sense of semi-private personal training within the group model. The top functional fitness facilities will always make their clients feel as if they’re receiving personal attention, which is paramount for retention. Lastly, in these communities the good coaches actually care if you show up. The old model of having people pay and hoping they don’t show up is gone. It’s flipped the industry upside down.

At Gates Mills Fitness, we still will focus on private personal training, but we are now changing our approach to focus more on semi-private group training. By doing so, fitness will be more affordable and enjoyable. Starting September 4th, we will be focusing our evenings on group training offering functional strength, yoga and more.

Come visit us for an

Open House on September 7th 5pm – 7pm

for more information and to meet the staff and members and see firsthand the fitness community that we have built right here in the Village.

SOCIAL NEWS OF THE SUMMER

THE LADIES EMBROIDERY GROUP A group of Gates Mills ladies started a needlework group. They met once a week on Thursdays when there was no Community Club meeting scheduled. Doddie Powell lent her living room, and around 15 women would bring needlework, knitting and other projects they wished to do. The Country Corner was active at that time, and some projects were made to sell in the store. By1971 they had 29 members, and Sally Burke's sister had a friend from Hudson who asked them to submit samples of designed embroidery for panels for a project in Blair House in Washington, D.C. The group’s sample was chosen and The Ladies Embroidery Group made the panels. The group started meeting at each member's house and collected dues for gifts and extras. They still had appetizers and wine. Elizabeth Hallett suggested they knit baby hats for Metro Hospital. This year, Mary Rountree, passed away, and that left two active knitters, Mimi Sposito and Sally Burke. They knit the hats at home and go to Sara's for lunch once a month. Mary Schmidt and Dede Storer were thinking it would be nice to start a new group! The details can be decided after we start. Mary's phone is 440-533-5732. We hope you will give it a try! THE GATES MILLS GARDEN CLUB had their annual Guest Night. No one had a visible new tattoo, but several people had long scars on their knees from surgery. One guest was heard to say that he hoped to be skiing in Colorado this winter. One member was seen moving her lips and saying she hoped to make it into Costco and back to the car.

The meal was catered and had signs telling you what it was. There were two bottles of wine on each table. We had a lovely couple at our table, and we're sure they should be our new best friends, but they are selling their house and moving to another part of Cleveland. These days we rarely get passed Heinen’s (name dropping) or Home Depot (more likely) much less the inner parts of the city. So we will wish them well and hope they come back next year. Everyone is looking toward the flower show in October. It is free and open to the public. You can also join the Garden Club and enjoy gardening and lunches all year. THE GATES MILLS PLAYERS had their annual picnic on the shores of Lake Erie. It would be nice if Gates Mills had an area where we could sit and watch the river. Several guests went to the water, but no one wore a bathing suit. The dinner was catered and very good. The fall play is coming up and you can come and see it, or you can join The Players and be on stage!

Please send submissions on births, deaths, weddings and other news to share with fellow Villagers to Susie Thorpe at [email protected] or call (440) 423-4743.
