Words from our Directors of Pilipino Cultural Night Jose Rizal once said, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan,” stating that if we are not keen to learn from our roots, we will never get to our destination. We be-lieve that knowing our roots is very important, as a form of foundation, where we base and build all our Pilipino Cultural Nights.
We welcome you tonight to Pilipino American Alliance’s 4th Annual Pilipino Cultural Night: From the Past to the Present. What you see before you is the final product of the dedication and hard work that fellow club members have put into when making this show. None of this would have happened without them. To think that our first PCN was just a mere four years ago and that we are now on our 4th one is just so surreal. This club has changed immensely since the beginning and the members have expressed how much this club has played a role not only in their college life but also in their personal life as well. PAA has helped many of us bloom into the great leaders we are and have found leadership roles through this club. Some of us did not imagine joining such a strong organization group or can even fathom what we’ve been through with this club from Friendship Games, Barrio Fiesta, One Sweet Date and, finally, Pilipino Cultural Night. As we continue day by day, we continue to make history through our experience, but let us reminisce about PAA’s past through a variety of parts from pas PCNs. Parts where it brings us to those years where we laughed until it hurt, cried until we could cry no more, and sat on the edge of our seats and wanted more! This play is dedicated to you PAA. Thank you all for the laughs, the tears, the random moments, and all the memories that have accumulated-from our freshman year to our final senior year. As your Directors of Pilipino Cultural Night, words cannot express how thankful we are for your time and talent. We are proud of you PAA.
Krysta Mae Paalisbo & Fatima Panes Directors of Pilipino Cultural Night
Message from the Executive ChairTo all friends, family, students, and perform-ers,
Thank you all for coming here to-night to support us, the Pilipino American Al-liance, for our Fourth Annual Pilipino Cultural Night! The Pilipino American Alliance has been my second family since the day I walked into my first General Meeting 3 years ago. It has been where I met all of my closest friends and met some of the most influential people in my life. This has been a wonderful experience for me and the fact that everybody in this club welcomed me with open arms was very meaningful to me. For those of you that may not know, as my name suggests I am not Filipino, but I am 100% Japanese. This detail seemed to not bother anybody and instead of being neglected and rejected, I was accepted into this club as one their own. This club means so much to me, as it probably does for everybody else. As a non-Filipino, being nominated into an officer position twice was already an accomplishment. However, becoming the president of PAA means so much to me and shows how loving this club really is. It has been a privilege and an honor to be the Executive Chair for this amazing club through the fall and spring semesters of 2011 to 2012. I could not have asked for a more outstanding group of individuals who put so much passion and love into this club. As the Executive Chair, I am very proud of each person who partook in this event and I hope that all their hard work will be seen throughout our production tonight. I hope you enjoy the show!

PCN 2012Cast
Pandanggo Sa Ilaw, meaning dance with lights, comes from Mindoro. This is the most difficult of all pandanggos. It is colorful and unusual; the female dancer gracefully and skillfully dances with three “tinghoy” or oil lamps - one on the head and two on the back of each hand.

Bontoc War Dance The Bontoc War Dance, also called Pattong, is part of the headhunting and war ceremonials inciting feelings of strength and courage as the warriors prepare to stalk their enemy. In Central Bontoc, the dance is also performed in February, March, and April, to implore the god Lumawig to send rain, similar in purpose to that of the rain-calling ceremony of Native American tribes. Much of the movements are impro-vised; two camps of warriors are usually featured pursuing each other, culminating in a melee where a fighter from one tribe kills one of his opponents.

Cariñosa This flirtatious dance is known throughout the Philippines. Cariñosa means affectionate, lovable, or amiable. With a fan and/or handkerchief, the dancers go through hide-and-seek movements and other flirting acts expressing tender feelings for one another. There are many versions of this dance, but the hide-and-seek movements are common in all.
Lumagen is performed mostly at Kalinga festivals as a way to celebrate Thanksgiving in time of good harvest. The dance is also performed during these events: - Thanksgiving for the birth of a child in the family - Victories in battle - Celebration of marriageThough this dance is difficult to perform due to the strenuous dance steps, still its high level of energy and the creativity involved in dancing the Lumagen makes this dance from the Kalinga one of the most entertaining to watch.

The Janggay dance of the Badjao people takes its name from the metal finger-nails worn by the women on special occasions. Passed down from generation to generation, the Janggay is danced for celebrations such as birthdays and weddings and for rituals and Ramadan. This smooth and flowing dance is performed with highly articulated form, restrained strict facial gestures and meticulous attention to the place-ment of each finger in relation to the palms and wrist twists.

Almost everyday, I get to meet some interesting people from the UC that come in to use our services. I love hearing their stories. Students and staff alike come from all over the world to attend UC Merced. I like to ask the students why they chose UC Merced and what field their majoring in. Some go into detail about their various research programs, while others just come in to get a cool key made. Whatever it is, we appreciate all the support we get from the students and staff at UC Merced. Congratulations to Alex Culannay and his crew for another great production this year.
Thank you, Kris, Christy & Jesus

Special ThanksCoordinators- We could not have made this happen without YOU! As coordi-nators, you have all played a very crucial role for PCN. Without your leadership and talent, your groups could not have done it without you. All those scheduling practices, meeting deadlines, and pushing every one as well as yourselves are things that you all did amazing at. Thank you for being our leaders and taking the opportunity to fill these roles. Great job and we hope you all can pass the torch and influence many to become leaders as well.
Culi and PubliC relations- Thank you so much for putting together all of the publicity that we could possibly have for PCN this year. Culi, you worked so hard on the program, from taking pictures to designing it. PR you guys have worked a lot on all the advertisements for PCN. All the flyers, posters, and tabling could have not been possible without your help. I thank you all for the amount of time you spent for making the programs and advertisements happen.
Paa Cultural- Many thanks to everyone that has participated in the cultural dances for this year’s PCN. You guys definitely put the “culture” in cultural! ;D We did face some difficulty getting people to be a part of this group within PAA but with all your efforts and hard work, we got enough current and new members to participate! We hope that you all continue to be part of cultural and have more people to share your en-thusiasm throughout the years …CULTU-ROLL OUT!
Paa Choir- If anyone has ever heard you guys sing, you’d all be mistaken for a choir of angels… that was sooo corny! But really though, choir is definitely something else. Many of you were so afraid to sing on the first day and now most of you are so quick to volunteer with solos! This group has grown in numbers and talent. You guys are a bunch of cuties!!
From your Directors of PCN
Paa Modern- Modern? Pfft!... you guys are HELLLLLLLLLLLA legit! This group has definitely expanded its horizons after competing in their first competition last semester. It seems that PAA Modern has connected ev-ery dance group on campus and made it into one team where you guys can explore different types of dances or even dance for the first time. You all have grown and I’m pretty sure the first modern coordinator is proud of you all.
sCriPt- Thank you for auditioning to be actors in this script. Honestly, I wasn’t too sure how many would want to audition but there was defi-nitely more than I had expected. As the writer of the script, I want to personally thank you all for your enthusiasm and talent. This script means a lot to me because it is about PAA and our past PCNs. Thank you all for making this script come to life.
teCh/baCkstage- You guys are a very important foundation to the show!!! Thank you guys for helping the actors and dancers get ready for their upcom-ing scenes throughout practice and during practice and the PCN per-formance. Working with all the lighting and timing would not be the same without all of your help. I cannot express how glad I am to see the amount of PAA members willing to help out with tech crew and back-stage. To see our club grow to this point is very touching. Thank you.
Paa Cabinet 2011-2012- This is our last year and we are more than happy to be a part of this cabinet. Every single one of you has witnessed our highest and low-est points, but you were always there to encourage us and to make us do our best. We really appreciate all the “tough love” that you showed and hopefully we can return the favor. Thank you all for understanding and helping us out during practices, as well as, participating in this year’s PCN.
Again, thank you to everyone. Because without you, this show would not have happened!!!
