Dear Friends,!!Wrap a special present for under the tree this holiday season with a donation to the FHS. Your tax-deductible gift will help us rescue many abandoned cats and dogs by providing care, food, shelter, spay/neuter surgeries, medical treatment, and most importantly, loving homes for the rest of their lives.!

Thanks to your generous support and the incredibly hard work of our volunteers, we performed a record-breaking 1154 spay/neuter surgeries and found permanent homes for 354 cats and dogs as of Oct. 1. This resulted in more lives saved and many great relationships built.!!

One milestone we achieved this year was obtaining approval from the Fayette County Commissioners to implement TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) in Fayette County. After presenting impressive results from a six-month test program, the FHS was given the go-ahead to work with Fayette County Animal Control to modify ordinances to support TNR as the preferred method of controlling feral cat overpopulation, which is a much more effective and humane solution than the traditional trap-and-euthanize policy.!!If you know anyone who is thinking of adopting a pet, please strongly encourage them to look into the FHS first. Our website is updated regularly, and we hold adoptions at PetSmart every weekend.!!For animals in need, there are no greater gifts.!!! ! ! ! ! Who we are... Incorporated in 1973, the Fayette

Humane Society is the oldest nonprofit humane organization in Fayette

County, Georgia. !We are staffed by volunteers and are supported entirely by individual and

corporate donations. !Because we do not have a shelter, most

animals we rescue live in temporary foster homes until they are adopted. !We believe all companion pets have

intrinsic value and deserve to be treated with love and respect.!!

FAYETTE HUMANE SOCIETY Christmas Tour of Homes

Presented  by  Harry  Norman,  Realtors

Sunday, December 7 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

A Breed of Their Own !!In many ways, the family reunion at Heather Fortner’s farm near Peachtree City was similar to countless others. Yet it wasn't the adults sharing the same bloodlines that motivated the party. It was the “children,” Pekinese-bulldog littermates known affectionately as the swamp puppies.!!For the adoptive parents, the reunion was a celebration, a happy ending for puppies that started life almost two years ago with many strikes against them. Filthy, sickly and terrified, they came to Johnny

Smith, their foster dad through the FHS, after being found in a hollow tree stump. Two puppies didn’t make it, but the other four puppies grew stronger and slowly learned to trust.  !!“With patience, love and socialization, the puppies soon blossomed,” said Heather, who stayed connected with Johnny after adopting one of the pups named Rosie. Thanks to social media, she also became friends with the adoptive parents of Rosie’s siblings, Griffin, Huxley and Oliver. When Griffin’s parents could no longer keep him, Johnny adopted Griffin and strengthened his connection with the swamp puppy family.!!Huxley, who was featured in our Holiday 2013 issue, wasn’t able to make the reunion because his family is stationed in Korea. Oliver rode down from Massachusetts, and the three littermates recognized each other immediately, even though they looked nothing like the sad characters that began life in a swamp. The dogs romping around were all grown up, with flowing tails, floppy ears and frisky attitudes.!!The proud parents pointed out the dogs’ striking similarities and differences. Their barks sound identical, they cuddle alike, and they all love to run. Rosie is the only

one with a black smudge on her face. “Seeing them together is exhilarating, because we share something special,” said Heather. “We share a breed of our own.” !At the center of the pack was Johnny, the foster parent responsible for caring for the pups and making sure they went to loving permanent homes. The dogs exploded with joy at seeing him again, and since their story is only too common, Johnny was happy to hear that Heather has become a foster parent, too. !!“Today is my pay day,” Johnny said.

Thanks to Our PetSmart Partners The FHS has partnered with the Peachtree City PetSmart store since its opening in 2007, and in that time we have worked together to find homes for thousands of cats and dogs. During our weekend adoptions, PetSmart employees offer expertise on what supplies each animal requires. Trainers Caitlin Baker and Rosanna Dove advise adopters about the behavioral traits of the different breeds as well as offer reduced training rates in order to make the transition to home life easier. Manager Shelly Mason is proud of her employees, and they all share our happiness in each adoption. !!Some of our cats reside in the PetSmart Cat Care Room for two weeks at a time. PetSmart employees, in addition to helping care for them, are happy to speak with potential adopters during the week and refer them to our fosters or our website for additional information. PetSmart generously donates food and supplies for use by our fosters as well as encourages shoppers to donate useful sale items to the FHS.!!PetSmart Charities, a national nonprofit organization funded mainly by sales from PetSmart stores and donations from PetSmart customers, subsidizes each in-store adoption, and several times a year sponsors National Pet Adoption Weekends. More than 40 FHS foster cats and dogs were adopted during September's event. PetSmart recently implemented a National Pet Food drive which greatly aids many homeless animals. Over the past few years, PetSmart Charities has given the FHS several targeted spay/neuter grants to help us control pet overpopulation in the community and we have just been awarded another grant for 2015.!!We are grateful to the PetSmart team that plays such a big part in keeping our animals healthy and happy, as we work together toward our goal—“until they all have homes."
