MIG was founded in 2000 to provide a reportingvenue for witnesses of unusual events. Manyunusual events occur in Missouri each year, whichare not reported and subsequently are notinvestigated. A goal of MIG is to haverepresentatives in each of the 115 Missouricounties. This would create a reporting network ofspotters who will be aware of what is happening intheir areas and report current activity to thegroup. Co-Directors are Barbara Becker and GaryHart.

If you are interested in participating in this effort, please email [email protected] or [email protected]

I represent MIG, the Missouri Investigators Groupbased in Columbia, Mo. http://ufomig.yolasite.com.We investigate UFO, Animal Mutilation, Bigfoot,Crop Circle and Abduction reports in Missouri andsurrounding states. If anyone in Oregon County hasexperienced anything unusual, please contact me byemail at [email protected] or go to our website andmake a report. http://ufomig.yolasite.com/online-report-form.php all information will be keptconfidential. Alien Abduction

The terms or abduction phenomenon describes "memoriesof being taken against one’s will by apparently nonhumanentities, and subjected to complex physical andpsychological procedures."People claiming to have been abducted are usually called"abductees" or "experiencers." Typical claims involve beingsubjected to a forced medical examination that emphasizestheir reproductive system.Abductees sometimes claim to have been warned againstenvironmental abuse and the dangers of nuclear weapons.Consequently, while many of these purported encountersare described as terrifying, some have been viewed aspleasurable or transformative.

NEWS FROM THE INSTITUTE OF FRONTIER SCIENCE

The Institute Of Frontier Science gives a greatopportunity for those who are writing or makingreports in the field of Ufology, as well asseasoned researchers.

Its founder and leader is Steven S. Bass, who inaddition to being the Founder and Director of theInstitute is also well known and respected byeveryone involved in the Ufology community.

"The Institute of Frontier Science is an elitefellowship of highly experienced and knowledgeablespecialists in the scientific field of Ufology."

The Institute of Frontier Science offers people thechance to embark on the truths that lie within theUFO genre. IFS will also educate the uneducated ona subject that has been kept behind closed doorsfor much too long. The institute will take time tobuild, but already has the “Big Guns” in place. IFSis for the truth and nothing but. People areencouraged to join this great undertaking, for whatI am sure will be a rewarding and educationalventure into the science of Ufology.

INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY

Most digital camera CCDs are sensitive tothis near infrared light so when you placean infrared filter in front of the lens thecamera simply adjusts itself to accommodatethis wavelength. The real beauty of this isyou also get to review the shot on an LCD

screen to make sure you are getting thephotograph you are seeking.

A simple check can be made to see if yourcamera is capable of infrared photography. All you need is the infrared remote fromyour TV and aim it at the lens and push abutton. If you see the LED emitter as apoint of light on you preview screen thenyou are set. What you will then need to dois find out which filter is best suited foryour camera. In most cases it will be achoice of one of the following filters: 87,87C, 88A or 89B. You will need to take thecamera along to a good camera shop to trythem but I have found the 88A works well inmost cases. So with your camera and chosen filter allyou need then is a good tripod.

PENNSYLVANIA LEGENDS

THE SQUONKThe Squonk is a legendary creature reputed to livein the Hemlock forests of Northern Pennsylvania.Legends of squonks probably originated in the latenineteenth century, at the height of Pennsylvania'simportance in the timber industry. The legend holdsthat the creature's skin is ill-fitting, andcovered with warts and other blemishes, and so ithides from plain sight and spends much of its timeweeping.Hunters who have attempted to catch squonkshave found that the creature is capable of evadingcapture by dissolving completely into a pool oftears and bubbles when cornered. A certain J.P.Wentling is supposed to have coaxed one into a bag, which, while he was carrying it home, suddenlylightened. On inspection, he found that the bagcontained only the liquid remains of the sadanimal.

Making A Footprint Cast

Materials that have been used for castingfootprints including but not limited to sulfur, foam, stone (dental), silicone, and plaster. Forworking in the field with tracks, plaster is anadequate and suitable material. We use plaster mostof the time to make the actual cast and recommendit for use.

Plaster is calcium sulfate which may have moleculesof water attached. Most types of plaster will workin the field to make durable, long-lasting casts offootprints. Expensive products are not needed. Ifthe label says Plaster, Hydro cal, or Stone it willwork okay. Plaster of Paris is a brand and anyPlaster will work.

Plaster will take adequate detail in any substrateand if the caster needs super fine detail thecompound can be sifted or mixed thin (later thickerplaster is added to the back to strengthen thecast.

There are some types not to use. Those productslabeled Patching Compound or Wall Board Plaster isdesigned for putting on walls. Sometimes at lowtemperatures experienced in the field, thesecompounds do not harden well and may break. Avoidany product labeled Poly Plaster. The Poly plasterscontain a polyurethane compound to increase theirflexibility and quality but they do not harden wellat temperatures below 50 degrees F. Always read themanufacturers directions for variation in curingtimes.

Materials for Special SituationsWhen casting in snow, plaster compounds go throughexothermic and reaction, that is they give off heatwhile curing. Heat melts snow and the water from

Page 20: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

20

20

the snow comes in contact with the plaster, diluting it and creating a cauliflower-likeappearance that is usually worthless for collectingevidence. We prefer Snow Impression Wax as it goesfurther. Before mixing the plaster, the wax issprayed over the footprint. The wax forms a waterproof seal and when the plaster is poured in thetrack, it still gives off heat and still melts thesnow but the water cannot get back to the plasterto dilute it.

The recommended procedure for using wax is to spraysix layers over the footprint. Each layer should bethin and about two minutes allowed betweensprayings for the wax to bind and harden. If thicklayers are sprayed, eventually the plaster castreveals the detail of the wax not the footprintitself. Between spraying rotate around thefootprint 120 degrees before the next spraying. After three sprayings move around 60 degrees beforestarting the last three. The waxes contain a reddye. After each spraying, examine the wax coveringcarefully looking for white spots of snow showingthrough. With subsequent sprayings, cover all whitespots. It is difficult to get the wax into thedelicate parts of the footprint such as the clawsso concentrate efforts to cover these spots. Oncehardened, plaster may be poured into the footprint. In reality, in the field it is often possible touse only three sprayings of wax. Waxes are delicateitems that require lots of TLC. If you allow wax toget cold, it will harden in the can. In the fieldduring cold weather, the can should be carriedinside the coat. The colder the weather the moreprotection you must give the wax. However, do notget it too hot or it may melt detail in thefootprint when sprayed on the track. It is also wise to prepare ahead of time and carrywires (safety pin or paper clips) small enough tofit into the nozzle to clean the nozzle as they are

Page 21: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

21

21

notorious for clogging. Also carry pliers so thenozzle may be pulled off for cleaning.

When casting in fine soil, dust, or sand the weightof the plaster or even just breathing ona track may destroy it. In these cases it is bestto harden the footprint first. Forensic Supplycompanies sells “Dust and Dirt Hardener” but wehave found that spray polyurethane works just aswell and is cheaper.

To use the hardener, spray a fine mist from highabove the footprint; since the can is underpressure too close and you will blast the footprintapart. Subsequent sprayings get closer and closerto the track until a thin plastic layer has beencreated that will bear the weight of the plaster.

Casting KitMaking a casting kit to keep in the car or yourpack. Kit items we typically carry include:

Plaster container: 1 - 1-gallon plasticcontainer with a screw-top lid. Avoid plasticsacks as they break too often.

Also avoid zip lock bags as once plaster getsin the zipper they leak.

Plaster: 2 lbs or more Water: Carry at least a quart or have access to

a local water supply such as a stream. Mixing cups: 3 plastic 32 oz. cups. Spatulas: 2 Spatulas should be the narrow type

with strong handles. Plastic garbage sacks: 2 or more. Casters must

be environmentally aware and all traces ofplaster or spray must be carried out. Do notwash mixing cups in streams but carry out thedirty cups.

Page 22: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

22

22

Some optional items include brushes andtweezers for cleaning out the track.

Plastic, metal, or cardboard walls to supportplaster above the track.

To protect a cast from breaking, you must controltwo things: thickness and density. Control forthickness by building a wall (natural orartificial) around the footprint. The wall needs toextend above the footprint so that the thinnestpart of the cast is at least 1/4 of an inch thick. This will work for casts up to 6-in in diameter.Casts greater than six inches should have 3/8 inchthickness over the thinnest part. Really big castsrequire more and may be strengthened with sticks orother materials.

Control for density by mixing plaster at themanufacturer’s recommended ratio of plasterto water. The mix ratio is generally two partsplaster and one part, water. When possible mixplaster a bit dense for strength but if there is alot of detail in the footprint you may need plasterjust a touch thinner. Add thicker plaster to theback of the cast to strengthen it. Try to avoid the“add water / add plaster” syndrome but if themixture is too thick do add water. It is best toadd water by a capful (about a tablespoon).

To pour plaster into a cast, hold the spatula closeto the footprint and pour on to the spatula lettingplaster run off the spatula about 1.4 inch into thecast. This procedure will prevent destroyingdelicate tracks especially in the snow.

Once the mixing process has started, try to finishthe process of mixing and getting the plaster intothe cast within a minute. If you take longer theplaster thickens and will not flow into detailedparts of the track.

Page 23: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

23

23

Next place the spatula tip on to the top surface ofthe cast and vibrate rapidly up and down but nomore than about 1/8 inch. Move slowly around thesurface. This will cause the air bubbles to riseand provide a smooth back. After the cast hashardened about 15 minutes, carefully scratchcollection data into the cast: date, time, location, collector’s name or initials. Allow thecast to harden for 30 minutes (check manufacturer’srecommendation).

Then carefully lift by the removing walls anddigging just under the edge of the cast all the wayaround the cast. Insert fingers under the cast onopposite sides of the shortest axis of the cast.Carefully break any seal with the surface bylifting one edge. Next roll the cast over onto yourfingers. Casts at this stage are durable if theywere mixed at the proper density. Carefully scrapedirt from the surface and wash gently. Do not use abrush but a spray from a hose may be used. After 24hours a strong spray may be used.

Plaster continues to cure for seven or more days.Place the cast in an open, dry, warm area somoisture may be driven out. Never place a cast inplastic as it traps moisture and may cause the castto crumble. Additionally wet casts left in plasticwill mold.

If a track is being made in snow an additional stepis needed. As soon as the plaster is poured, coverthe cast with a plastic bag. Then insulate the castwith clothing or a deep layer of snow. This willtrap the exothermic heat inside and let the castcure. In very cold condition, we give casts 40minutes before picking up. If left longer, themelted water may refreeze trapping the cast. Ifthis happens take a shovel and dig out a largepiece of snow containing the cast. Place this glob

in a tub. When the ice melts, the cast will beready for viewing.

Cast stored in a dry place will last a longtime. No special care is needed.

UFOOLOGY TODAY

Where have we been? What are we doing? Whereare we going? Ufologists, Investigators,Researchers or whatever we are being callednow are becoming data administrators andarchive keepers. Let me explain. Here’stypically how it works. An email report orsome type of form that was filled out on anonline site is received and given to theappropriate person in whatever organizationto handle. That person in turn sends anemail to the person making the report ormakes a phone call to that person for anappointment if a contact number was includedin the report.

In most instances the investigator will tryfor a face to face interview by appointmentbut that rarely happens as the person makingthe report thinks everyone involved in thestudy of UFOs is in fact a government agentor at the very least a hybrid just trying toget to their loved ones for who knows what.Reports by the hundreds show up every monthon various sites and although some showpromise, most are hoaxers trying for that 15minutes of fame thing we always hear about. Then there are the reports, which arecopied, and the dates and places and somecircumstances changed to make an old reportlook like a new report. It is amazing thatsomeone would do that but it happens all thetime. It is a weak system but it is the only

Page 31: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

31

31

system used by most organizations and thereis no oversight.

So the investigator makes contact with theperson who made the report and one of twothings happen. The person states verbatimwhat he sent or makes up an entirelydifferent story. Now it is up to theinvestigator to file the report. So whichone does he file? The boring original, orone with a little more spice? To be fairmost investigators file the original withoutany add-ons. More about the latter furtherdown the road. Now the report goes towhoever the administrator of the group isand he or she decides whether it getsarchived in a database or chucked. Chuckedyou say! Yes chucked, trashed, eliminated orjust forgotten. Happens all the time. Casesdisappear from databases everyday. Why? Welllots of reasons. The most likely reason isyour not meant to see that report because itmay be true, it may be a threat to NationalSecurity (my favorite) or it’s going to windup in someone’s book down the road and noones wants to give up what’s in theirupcoming book now do they?

Somewhere in UFO history people got the ideathey could retire if they write a book andbecome famous and be on CNN. So what do theydo to get to that point? They come up withreports that no one has ever heard of. Theygive vague reference as to time andlocations of the events and never mention

Page 32: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

32

32

how they got the report or why they got thereport and know one else has heard of it.They come up with creature sightings, paranormal events and all manner ofstrangeness and most often this all takesplace in a small geographic area they seemto control in their minds. They will havereportedly taken hundreds of reports but canproduce nothing as they use the oldconfidentially thing. Kind of like theDoctor patient deal or the Lawyer clientthing. You don’t have to ask for names toget that answer which instantly leads you tobelieve there is no report. Or they justplagiarize someone else’s work. Now don’tmisunderstand. There are many researchersout there who have written books andcontinue to do so but they have purpose. They look for truth, disclosure by thegovernments, historical cases, etc. Theydescribe their work in detail and disclosethe how, when, where and why. They tell youthe resources used in the formulation oftheir book. Locations, times, dates, etc.But ask anyone of those folks if they aregetting rich writing a book and they justlaugh.

So how does this effect UFOLOGY? For onething it has bred a small group of futurewannabes who want their names up in lightsand flying first class all over the worlddoing the conference thing. Speaking onradio and television making thousands ofdollars. They forgot why they embarked on

Page 33: THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER - uforcop.comuforcop.com/assets/32_february_13.pdf · THE PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER ... paranormal events, and ... INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY Most digital camera

33

33

this journey to find the truth and enlightenthe masses. They misplaced the search forthe truth and the bringing about ofdisclosure. Egos are destroying Ufology.Titles and whom you have your picture takenwith have replaced stomping through somemuddy field to take measurements or photosor cast impressions. Now it’s about fortuneand glory. Keeping track of who is doingwhat has replaced honest down to earthinvestigating. Putting forth cases they knowto be false or without merit. Infighting hasreplaced honest case discussion. Conferencesare given to sell books. Conferences are toadvise the public what we are doing.Conferences are not for investigators theyare for the public and getting that acrossto some in this field is a tough sell. Whatit all has come down to is follow the money! With some it is a numbers game. My groupinvestigated more than your group thismonth. Well I’d sooner see ten good solidinvestigations than one hundred shakyinvestigations.

So where have we been in the last 63 years? We started great and the number ofinvestigators that started in those timeswere among the best in the world.Unfortunately there are very few of themleft. What are we doing? Cataloging cases bythe thousands with little or noinvestigations. Where are we going? Followthe money. It has become common for groupsto ask for money via donations on their

34

websites. Is the money used for research orequipment to investigate the phenomenon? Notlikely. UFO websites advertise everythingfrom Avon products to Viagra. I just cannotmake the connection of Ufology and Viagraequals investigative progress. So we havebeen where we were supposed to be at onepoint in our history, then we became dataprocessors and now we hunt for fortune andglory. I talk almost daily with researchersand investigators here and abroad and thereare a number of us that will retain ourvalues and keep the search for the truthgoing. We ask for nothing and fund our ownresearch and equipment purchases. We willcontinue the scope of our research to thebest of our abilities and will keep thepublic informed as best we can, through ourwebsites, conferences and newsletters.

NOTABLE UFO QUOTES

"The evidence is overwhelming that Planet Earth isbeing visited by intelligently controlledextraterrestrial spacecraft. In other words, someUFOs are alien spacecraft. Most are not. It's clearfrom the opinion polls and my own experience, thatindeed most people accept the notion that some UFOsare alien spacecraft. The greater the education, the more likely to accept this proposition"-- Stanton Friedman Defense Contractor NuclearPhysicist

"The UFO phenomenon being reported is somethingreal and not visionary or fictitious"--General Nathan Twining Chairman, Joint Chiefs ofStaff, 1955-1958

"When the long awaited solution to the UFO problemcomes, I believe that it will prove to be notmerely the next small step in the march of science, but a mighty and totally unexpected quantum leap.""We had a job to do, whether right or wrong, tokeep the public from getting excited"--Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Director US Air Force ProjectBlue Book as a Scientific Consultant, Astronomer,Investigator.

EVIDENCE OF BIGFOOT

Theories and explanations about why there's noevidence of Bigfoot are no substitute for evidence.

Does Bigfoot exist? We admit that's it's possible, but we find that possibility to be extremely remoteat best.

We find it much more likely that a large group ofpeople want to believe, and do everything they canto reinforce that belief.

Giant Phantom BirdsSouth Greensburg, PA

Once again reports of Giant Birds rear their uglyheads in Greensburg PA. This time they aren’t the“whooshing kind” normally reported in that area-flying overhead with 15 to 20 foot wingspansfollowing Route 119. This one hides behind treesonly showing its back and wings and walking withoutleaving tracks in fresh snow covered ground. Thenthe “strange and mysterious creature” disappearsinto the thin cold air without a trace.

Another sighting of a Great Blue Heron!

GREAT BLUE HERON

Stands four feet tall, is a dark grayish blue andhas a wingspan of nearly six feet

Necks long, typically folded in flight (extendsneck near take-off and landing)

Slow wing-beat Typically found singly or in pairs
