Principal’s Report

5 Nights Until …..

This Sunday sees months of planning come to fruition as the school’s P&C Fete comes alive. Many people have spent countless hours ensuring that the community has an event that brings it together. A special mention to Dayan McLeod who is the Fete Coordinator. She has done an amazing job and I am thoroughly looking forward to the day. The Fete is a great opportunity to support the school but to also catch up with old friends in a carnival type atmosphere, and let’s be honest who does not enjoy a good carnival. I look forward to seeing everyone there on Sunday (maybe not if you are in the line for the Dunking Machine when I am sitting up there). I am sure it will be an awesome event. So tell all of your friends and see you on Sunday!

NAPLaN Online Yesterday saw the culmination of a few days testing for our Years 3 and 5 students. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the students in sitting these assessments. They were brilliant! Unfortunately there were some technical issues outside the school’s control. Year 5 students will receive a note today outlining their options for the Writing assessment if they were affected by these issues. The options in the note are a national option and we require them to be returned to school tomorrow. Well done to Mrs Wasson and Mrs Griffiths for their coordination of these assessments and the Years 3 and 5 teachers for their support for the students.

Staff Professional Learning Tomorrow afternoon staff from PHPS will join staff from West Pennant Hills PS to participate in professional learning on the new Science & Technology syllabus. This course has been designed by Mrs Wasson and the Deputy Principal of West Pennant Hills PS to target the identified

needs of our school. The course does not affect the normal day of school as it will take place between 4-7pm. Please ensure that you collect your child tomorrow at 3:15pm as all staff will be heading over to West Pennant Hills PS as soon as possible.

Student Achievement

Mia H in Year 3 has been selected to sing at the Sydney Eisteddfod later this month. She will be singing Good morning Baltimore from the theatre production, Hairspray. Congratulations Mia and we wish you the very best of luck.

Hunter P in Year 5 has been selected to represent Sydney North PSSA at the upcoming NSW PSSA State Carnival for Rugby League. Hunter is also about to trial for the Sydney North PSSA Rugby Union team. On weekends Hunter has been selected to play for Eastwood Rugby Union in their representative teams. What a star! We wish him the best of luck in the upcoming trials and at the State Carnival.

KB Parent Teacher Interviews

Parents of students in KB will receive a letter this week to arrange a parent teacher meeting with Mrs B. These meetings were postponed from the end of Term One to allow Mrs B to get to know the children better. I thank all the parents for their understanding with this matter. The meetings will be conducted over the next two weeks and bookings will be made online. All the necessary information will be in a note going home this week with your child.

Director Visit

Today I met with Mr Mark Anderson who is the Acting Director of Educational Leadership-Hornsby Network, in essence my boss. Each term the Principal meets with their Director. The focal point of the meeting was to discuss how the school knows, cares and values each student. The discussion focused on the wonderful work of the Learning and Support Team. Mrs McSweeney our Learning and Support Teacher is a leader in this area and the school is very lucky to have her as a permanent member of staff. It also focused on the teachers’ knowledge of the students and their strengths and weaknesses and how they and the school cater for their needs. Mr Anderson is an outstanding educator and person, and is was fantastic for him to take time out of his schedule to discuss Pennant Hills Public School.

Executive Director Visit

Later this term the school will have the privilege of a visit from the Executive Director for Macquarie Park, Mrs Cathy Brennan. Mrs Brennan oversees all schools in this area and is very keen to visit Pennant Hills Public School and we are fortunate that she has chosen us to visit. I look forward to meeting her and showing her some of the great teaching and learning that happens daily at PHPS.

Kind regards,Mr Matt Pinchbeck Principal

Earn & Learn

Please keep collecting!

We are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. From now until June 25 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker sheet that can be found in our school office buildings. We have collection boxes at both sites in the office buildings as well as at Woolworths Thornleigh and Woolworths Cherrybrook. The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more! We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

NAPLAN

A big thank you to all of the students and our wonderful teachers during the NAPLAN testing period. The students were very well behaved and the teachers extremely helpful throughout the process of setting up, packing up and ensuring that our students were comfortable. Thank you also to our families who encourage their children to apply themselves and go into testing situations with confidence.

Within our school

Stage One have been participating in a wonderful fitness program organised by Ms Martin, focusing on fundamental movements skills and it looks like a lot of fun! What wonderful weather we have been having to take advantage of our fabulous outdoor learning spaces.

The Pennant Term 2, Week 4

Kindergarten are using their scientific skills of inquiry particularly during their Inquiry Hour sessions. This week saw milkshakes being concocted, grassy heads being planted, celery stalks in coloured water and the creation of butter! Lots of hands-on interactive learning.

THE GREEN TEAM

Let’s look at the first of the 3 R’s, REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE, here are some tips to help you reduce the waste created in your household.

R is for REDUCE -

1) Shopping bags - Purchase and remember to take your reusable carrier bags and fruit andveg nets when you go shopping2) Coffee Cup - Buy a good thermo cup for your take out coffee, many cafe’s offer a discount for BYO cup3) Lunch box - Use washable boxes instead of zip lock bags/cling wrap and individual packets of snacks4) Repair things - Don’t be too quick to throw out household items, instead see if the item can be fixed orrepaired. When you do need to replace things, opt for quality long lasting products5) Compost - Invest in a good composter, put all your tea bags, fruit and veg scraps, coffee grinds and tissuesin it, use the composted waste to nourish your garden6) Say no to pod coffee - Use a plunger to make your fresh coffee, coffee pods create huge amounts of waste7) Washable cloths - Use washable microfibre cloths instead of disposable ones and paper towel8) Keep food leftovers - Don’t throw out unused portions of food after a meal, box them up and refrigerate themfor a lunch, or freeze them for later use, use meat scraps for dog/cat treats9) Avoid disposable items - Use cloth nappies, use washable sanitary ware (menstrual cups and liners)10) Purchase and sell/gift goods - Take a look at second hand sale sights for things like bikes and furniture, usethem to sell goods you no longer have a use for11) Bulk buy - Where possible buy long life pantry foods and cleaning products in large quantities, be sure tostore carefully in pest proof tubs or share purchases with friends

The school fete is just days away, don’t forget BYO, coffee cup (to receive a 50c discount), BYO water bottle (make use of the free filling stations) and BYO shopping bags.
