Flu Update: Volumes Decreasing by: Dan Salinas, MD, Chief Medical Officer and

Patrick Frias, MD, Chief Operations Officer

Children’s is now seeing a downward trend in volumes and percent positive influenza testing in our laboratories related to the recent increase in influenza and respiratory viral infections, but we will be closely monitoring any increase in influenza activity. On behalf of Children’s leadership, we would like to say thank you to all of our physicians across our many facilities and in our community for the extra effort put forth in helping Children’s continue to provide access to quality care for our patients during this busy time.Like in all quality-focused organizations, Children’s leadership will be conducting an after-action meeting to identify any improvements or process changes that can be made allowing our System to better handle a surge of this nature in the future. If you have any suggestions you would like to share with leadership, submit them to Physician Communications.

We ask that you continue to encourage your patients to get the flu shot if they have not already and direct them to the resources available on choa.org/flu.

55-Word Story Project As part of their Humanism curriculum, Dr. Hughes Evans worked with the residents on creating 55 word stories.  55-word stories are a quick way to capture the moments in clinical practice or

life that are particularly meaningful to the writer.  The prompt for these stories was simply to describe a work-related event that was particularly memorable for you.  The residents wrote

these and shared them with each other.

First day of residency Afraid, don’t know what to do

How to put in orders

Tylenol okay?

Lost, confused, overwhelmed

Nurses call, don’t know what do to

Say, “I’ll ask a real doctor”

Once hard, now second nature

Still don't know what to do

But confident in what I do know

Hashtag six months in.

-John Hicks

Second Chance

Vomiting, chest pain, headache, can’t see. No hope.

Dark Eyes.Visits PICU often.

Better the next day. Requests discharge.

Worries home is not where he will stay.Phone rings, smiles emerge which fade

as fear arises. Hours later, out of OR with a smile. Eyes

sparkling. Departs three days later singing,” See

you in clinic.”

-Nichole McCollum

Nights Sweats

ER. 5E. ER. 5W. 2:15 already? Cliff bar. Score. Notes complete. Day shift arrives. No calls. Tachycardia stable. Found my car. Was that a stop sign? Home. Fridge empty. Kroger sushi not half bad at 8am. Home. Bed.

Finally. Toss. Turn. Tornado sirens? Seriously? Is it considered night sweats if it’s the afternoon?

- J.P. Stevens

Dr. Jhody-Ann Hendricks, second year neonatology fellow, received a $2,000 grant from the ACGME “Back to Bedside” initiative. Her proposal was on “Case Pearls: Incorporating Technology at the Bedside.” This initiative was created to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that combat burnout by fostering meaning in their learning environments and engaging on a deeper level with their patients. Learn more about this initiative here. Congratulations Jhody-Ann!

Spin Doctor The hazards of taking care of others at the expense of yourself

By: Patrick Adams and Mary Loftus

“You okay, doc? “Who me?” I pointed at my chest. “Yeah, you.”

I turned my head away from the television and back toward him. I poked out my lip and furrowed my brow.

“Look like you got something heavy on your soul.”

Heavy on my soul. I didn’t say anything. Instead I just stared at him, surprised at how warm my face was becoming and how my eyes were stinging with tears.
