HE IS AN OLDER MAN.The present revival of public interest in the Shakers is

a notable and rather puzzling fact. Items and stories aboutthem may be found in half the papers and magazines onepicks up. This is all the more remarkable as they neverput themselves forward in any way.

We mention the circumstance in order to correct a mis-take made by a contemporary as to Alonzo Hollister, ofMount Lebanon, N. Y. Heis not a young man, as alleged, being now 65 years of age. He has lived with the Shakersever since he was a child of seven. Of the outside worldheknows nothing, save by reading and hearsay. He has asettled mind. No doubts or fears ever trouble him. Tall, slender and clear-eyed, he is a philosopher, a philanthropistand a seer—a man in a million.

Hollister’s genius for botanical and medicinalchemistrywould have made fame and fortune for him had he notalways been a Shaker and a recluse. All the better, how-ever, for the rest of us, as we are now indebted to him forthe only real and radical cure thus far known for indigestionor dyspepsia—the recently introduced preparation calledShaker Digestive Cordial.

Beyond dispute this is a discovery, or rather a revelation. This community of expert herbalists have, under Hollister’sguidance, been for years searching for such a remedy. Nowthey seem to have found it. It promises to be to all gastricdisorders what anti-toxine is to diphtheria or quinine tofevers.

Taken right after meals the Cordial digests the food andprevents the stomach fermentation which causes sick head-ache and other forms of suffering. Chronic cases are curedafter all other treatment has been appealed to in vain. Thefirst dose has an immediate good effect. Hating war onprinciple, “Alonzo” and his friends have, nevertheless, won a big battle for their fellow men.

|rfe of tl]e Jokers. The following letter is from the graceful pen

of the talented Mary Francis Carr, of MountHolly City, N. J.

“ Last, but not least, comes up the remem-brance of my visit to the Shaker Settlement. That is a leaf in memory to which I shall oftenturn. I have it all before me now. Its broadacres of rich land; the trees laden with ripe, golden fruit—everything growing in rich pro-fusion that heart could wish for; the substan-tial pleasant built houses ; the cheerful ways ofthe well-ordered families; the great broad-backed, soft-eyed cows, themselves partakingof the quiet gentle ways of their keepers—therich, pure milk drawn from their udders bythe pretty young Shakeresses; the youngbrother who passed on before ua, showing ushis stock (and with an air of pride pointing

out Ms best), with his broad-brimmed hat, fat, rosy cheeks, and bright black eyes—all thesethings make a bright picture that will neverfade.

“As I passed from one to another and sawthe calm, happy look on each, I could not butwonder of their inner lives—what of theirhopes and fears, etc.

<s As these things crowd my mind, the tall, slender figure of Sister Sarah comes upbefore me. Her kind, motherly ways gaveme the confidence to ask what I would. Shetold how, at seven years of age, her motherhad brought her from the far-off hills of Ver-mont, and laid her an offering on God’s altar, consecrating her to His service. Fifty yearshave passed since then, and her testimonynow is, ‘I am happy/ What a lesson for theworldling! I scanned that placid face—nomark of discontent was there—no hard drawnlines had settled round any of the features, but a peaceful, happy expression, telling ofthe beauty of her life. As I looked at her, IWondered if, when fifty-three years of my lifehad passed, I should be able to bear the same

testimony,, And then 1 said to her, '’Have yonnever, in all these long years, longed forthe pleasures of the world?’ With an eyebeaming with truthfulness and a voice full ofsweetness, she said: ‘*Nay, Sister, never,’With this testimony I was led to believe whatI had never thought before, that the Shakersare a happy people. All that I saw led me tothink it. It is surely no convent life with itsrigid laws and penances; no dark vaults orgloomy cells; no high walls or grated windows.Strong, willing hearts are there, bearing afirm but gentle rule. A ready obedience fromall gives birth to the good order and happinessthat are so plainly visible. As I passedthrough the cool, pleasant rooms, seeing thehappy faces and hearing the cheerful voices ofold and young, and seeing the well-filled lard-ers, I thought, ‘O, what a home for thehungry, what a rest for the weary! ’ I know itis very unromantic to talk of being hungry;but as I am of the earth, earthy, I confess Iwas able to do justice to the sweet Grahambread and golden butter, the fresh milk, cakes, pies, and fruit that were set before us. Andthen there was such a delicate politeness in the

offering of the lunch, almost making us feeltlfat it was by accident, while we knew it wasplaced there especially for us. After feastingon these good things, we were led back to thereception room by gentle Sister Sarah. I couldnot but express my thankfulness for the kind-ness she had manifested and the pleasure I hadrealized, and looking into her clear, calm eyes,I longed for a place in her love and memory;and when I asked her to grant me this boon, bright tears gathered in those soft eyes, andshe bent over and imprinted a fervent kiss onmy face. I shall never forget the pleasure ofthose sweet lips ; and, like the child whom thegreat Napoleon kissed, must ever keep thatspot sacred. Ido not know that it was so, butI shall ever cherish the idea that when thedewy tears gathered in those soft eyes, andthat warm kiss was given, there went up aprayer for my eternal welfare. Be that as itmay, I shall ever pray for one who was to meso kind, and I look forward to the time whenI shall rest beside the River of Life and holdsweet converse with the gentle spirit of SisterSarah.”

Few Know About the Shakers of Mount Lebanon.i

We may not accept their peculiar religiousviews. We cannot enter into the spirit of theirsacrifices, and therefore we do not study theirhabits of life.

It is not necessary to believe as they do, butwe can and do respect their sincerity of pur-pose and the honor and uprightness whichmark all their business dealings.

In one particular the Shakers excel all othermen or classes of men. This is in the culti-vation of medicinal herbs and plants. Theyhave made it a study for more than onehundred years. They are also expert in ex-tracting from them their characteristic essencesand medicinal virtues.

This is their peculiar industry. Their lives.have been devoted to it. By it they are sup-ported. They excel in this branch as do theMonks of the order of St. Benedict with theirfamous liqueur called “Benedictine.”

Now, this lifelong study on the part of theShakers has not been in vain. They have ac-

complished much good. Their medicinal ex-tracts and cordials are known throughout theworld.

The Shaker Digestive Cordial is probablythe most useful medicine ever given to thepublic. It is not a cure for all diseases; itdoesn’t pretend to be; but one disease it willcure, and that is indigestion. It is not pre-tended that it will cure anything else, and asufferer has not long to wait to see the result.

Almost the first dose will give relief, and ifcontinued, a permanent cure will follow. TheShaker motto isProve all things and holdfast that which is good.” For this reason theShakers put into the hands of the retail drug-gists who sell their remedy, small trial bottles, which can be had for ten cents each, so thatfor this .small sum the reader can ascertainwhether it is adapted to his case.

Its good effects will be felt at once. Thereader should examine the following paragraphand learn about this terrible complaint, dys-pepsia, for it is the disease of a large class ofsuffering humanity.

Important Suggestion.Probably ■it is notx the rule, yet many persons who

have suffered long with dyspepsia are also troubledwith costiveness. One may have indigestion withouthabitual constipation. The conditions are different. But where it does exist, and the bowels and lym-phatics are clogged with waste matters, they must beremoved out of the way. Now, the Cordial is not in-tended to act as a mere cathartic (in. which case itwould do little or no good to the majority of dys-peptics), and therefore we must relieve the constipatedby the use of some mild, painless and thorough laxa-tive. The best is the well-known Shaker Extract op

Roots, an article especially prepared by the Shakersfor this purpose. Taken in 30-drop doses for a dayor two, in connection with the Cordial, it will clearthe system and leave the Cordial free to deal with thestomach, the real seat and source of disease.

The Shaker Extract of Roots should httakenbedtime. The Cordial should always be taken in-stantly after eating, so that it may become mixedwith the food in the stomach and prevent fermentationand decomposition. Small bottles of the ShakerExtract of Roots may be obtained from thedruggists for ten cents. Vbat is tMs Disease called Dyspepsia?

Like a thief at night, it steals in upon ns un-awares. The patients have pains about thechest and sides, and sometimes in the back. They feel dull and sleepy; the mouth has a badtaste, especially in the morning. A sort ofsticky slime collects about the teeth. Theappetite is poor. There is a feeling like aheavy load on the stomach ; sometimes a faint,all-gone sensation at the pit of the stomachwhich food does not satisfy. Eyes are sunken, the handsand feetbecome cold and feel clammy. After a while a cough sets in, at first dry, butafter a few months it is attended with a green-ish-colored expectoration. The patient feelstired all the while, and sleep does not seem toafford any rest. After a time he becomesnervous, irritable and gloomy, and has evilforebodings. There is a giddiness, a sort ofwhirling sensation in the head when rising upsuddenly. The bowels become costive; theskin is dry and hot at times; the blood be-comes thick and stagnant; the whites of the

9

eyes become tinged with yellow; the urine isscanty and high-colored, depositing a sedimentafter standing.

There is frequently a spitting-up of the food, sometimes with a sour taste and sometimeswith a sweetish taste ; this is frequently attendedwith palpitation of the heart; the vision be-comes impaired with spots before the eyes:there is a feeling of great prostration and weak'ness. All of these symptoms are in turnpresent. It is thought that nearly one-third ofour population has this disease in some of itsvaried forms. It has been found that medicalmen have mistaken the nature of this disease. Some have treated it for a Liver Complaint, some for Dyspepsia, others for Kidney Disease, etc., etc., but none of the various kinds of treat-ment have been attended with success.

Now, the Cordial causes the food eaten to bedigested. This will cause an appetite for morefood, and this being digested will result in anincrease of strength, an increase of flesh, andan increase of nerve power.

The tired weary feeling will give way tovigor and courage. The pale, thin and emaci-

ated will recover their color and plumpness, because red blood and fat are the result ofproperly digested food.

A trial bottle will produce a result. Its goodeffect will be realized at once. You will nothave to take a dozen bottles to find out if it isdoing you any good. Try it, and then givepraise to the Shakers of Mount Lebanon, NewYork, for the relief that you obtain.

IMPORTANT NOTICE.In many cases of indigestion there is a complication of

diseases, so that the Digestive Cordial will not alwaysafford relief unless these complications are removed. Whenthe blood has been poisoned by the putrefaction of undi-gested food in the stomach and intestines, the Liver,Kidneys and Skin will not carry off the impurity of thepoisoned blood without an alterative remedy to stimulateinto action these important organs. In such cases thereare frequent attacks of Biliousness and “Sick Headache.”When this shall have been done, then the Cordial will havea most happy effect.

To stimulate the Liver, Kidneys and Skin, a remedymade by the Mount Lebanon Shakers should be used, sayfrom one-third to one-half a teaspoonful everynight at bed-time. This remedy is a most excellent one and is called“The Shaker Extract of Roots.” It can be obtained fromnearly all druggists. Trial bottle, 10 cents.

At Tbe Millionaires’ Club.

The banquet was over, and a few intimatefriends were gathered about the orator of theevening, in one corner of the palatial smokingroom, congratulating him upon his eloquentresponse to the toast “ Success in Life.”

He stood among them, the picture of healthand physical strength, except for a flushed facewhich they attributed to the excitement of theoccasion.

Suddenly, without a moment’s warning, heuttered an inarticulate cry and, placing his handon his heart, sank to the floor unconscious. Aphysician was hastily summoned, and at oncepronounced it a case of heart failure, andexpressed the opinion that the patient couldlive but a few hours.

An intimate friend, remembering that he hadbeen under treatment for some time by a prom-inent physician of the metropolis, sent for thisdoctor, who came to the club house post haste.

12

By this time the patient appeared to be beyondall hope.

The second doctor, who was familiar withthe man’s constitution and its peculiarities, looked at him but an instant, and said there wasno occasion for alarm. Presently the sick manvomited freely, and within half an hour had re-gained consciousness and was able to be takenhome.

What is the moral of this simple story? In-stead of heart disease, the man was a victim ofindigestion. The food, of which he had eatento excess, remained undigested and began toferment. The gas thus set free distended thewalls of the stomach, which pressed against theheart and interfered with its normal action.

The moment that the stomach was emptiedhe recovered. How many poor deluded suf-ferers go through the world with the idea thatthey have heart disease, expecting that anymoment may be their last,,when in reality theyhave nothing but a form of indigestion, and bygiving the stomach a little assistance, they willbe completely restored.

It is in just such cases that the Shaker Digest-ive Cordial proves most efficacious. We could

Page 15: The peaceful life of the Shakers. - National Institutes of Health · 2014. 12. 16. · Important Suggestion. Probably it is not x therule, yet manypersons who have suffered longwith

■tell a similar story of people who imagine thatthey have consumption in its incipient forms.

The haggard face and hacking cough allpoint to this dread disease, and yet the troubleis really nothing- but a form of dyspepsia.

The Shaker Digestive Cordial will preventdistress after eating. This distress is causedby the decomposition of undigested food. TheCordialwill prevent the decomposition.

The Digestive Cordial will increase the appe-tite. It does this by causing the food eaten tobe digested, when the empty stomach will callfor more food. This is appetite.

The Shaker Cordial will prevent Sick Headache, one of the most distressing symptoms ofIndigestion. If the food is not digested in thestomach, it ferments and putrefies, causing thedevelopment of poisons. These poisonscause Sick Headache. Remove the cause andthe disease is cured—Sick Headache is but asymptom of Indigestion.

Ihe fulness after eating is another symptomof Indigestion, and it is wonderful how soonthis disagreeable feeling will pass away when

14

the food is made to digest in a natural manner. This is all that the Shaker Cordial does. Itappears simple—it is simple, but it is effective.

Constipation is the result of overwork on thepart of the intestines in being made to carryoff not only the excrement, but a lot of undi-gested food as well. Digest the food eaten andthe bowels will become healthy in their move-ments. At first this Costiveness had better beremoved with a dose of the Shaker Extract ofRoots at bedtime; in a little while, as thedigestion is improved, this Costiveness willcease.

The Trial Bottles which are sold at 10 centseach contain three doses, sufficient for one day,but enough to determine if the Cordial isadapted in any particular case. Although theCordial acts so promptly it is a mild remedy andperfectly harmless.

The large bottles which sell for one dollareach contain 42 doses, sufficient to last 14 days. But we recommend the trialbottle to be first used, for the Shaker motto is “ Try all things and holdfast to that which is good."

Directions for using the Shaker DigestiveCordial: Take three teaspoonfuls with each mealthree times a day. Never take the Cordial onan empty stomach, but with the meal or imme-diately after eating, so that the Cordial will be-come mixed with the food in the stomach.

We are often asked if Cod Liver Oil shouldbe used in Dyspepsia. We answer no; there isnothing that will so derange the stomach asthis disagreeable article. The emulsions areworse than the oil, because the gum with whichthey are made is difficult of digestion. TheEgg Emulsions are the best, and should bemade fresh by your Druggist.

Consumptive People all have indigestion. If they could digest their food they would growfleshy and strong and so be able to resist thedisease. No consumptive will die if he canmaintain good digestion. Many cases of socalled consumption are nothing but indigestion.Such cases will be cured by the Shaker Cordial—make use of a trial bottle for 10cents and seoif it does not agree with you.

The Diet. —This is a most difficult questionbecause the food that willagree with one personwill prove harmful to another. The rule is toeat that which agrees with you. No one cantell better than each individual. It is a goodrule to eat what the palate craves. Sometimesa food supposed to be objectionable will befound just adapted to some particular case. But in a short time after the use of the ShakerDigestive Cordial the sufferer will be able todigest anything the stomach craves and theappetite will increase with astonishing rapidity.

The ioc. bottles can be obtained from nearlyall Drug Stores, and should the trial bottleprove satisfactory, the Druggist can procurelarge bottles for you if he should not havethem in stock.

If for any cause the trial bottle should notgive relief, we would like to be advised byletter addressed: The Shaker’s, P. O. Box,1503, New York.

FATHER JAMES WHITTAKER.This good and able man, who was one of the founders

of the Shaker Community, constantly said to his people,“Never deceive anyone.' Tell things as they are. Mis-representation is as bad as direct lying.”

His followers have remembered his advice, which is, nodoubt, one of the reasons why they prosper in all theyunder-take. “A good name,” says the Good Book, “is betterthan precious ointment.” These people certainly do enjoythe good name they have lived and labored to deserve.

Therefore, when their new medicine or remedy, theShaker Digestive Cordial, was introduced to the public, there was a demand for it at once. The bare word of theShakers seemed to be enough.

The Mount Lebanon (N. Y.) Shakers, from whom itcomes, are thinkers, inventors and chemists, as well asmoralists. But above all they are botanists and students ofthe medicinal qualities of herbs ; and one of their strongestdesires has always been to find a cure for one disease-indigestion or dyspepsia, and its dreadful train of evils.

They worked long and patiently at this many-sidedproblem, justas they work at their manufactures and farms. They haveat last succeeded beyond their hopes. In this ob-stinate and distressing disease their Cordial acts like the oiland wine of the GoodSamaritan. Itrelieves the distress aftereating, sick headache, pain in the chest, heart palpitation, etc., almost at once, and soon works a radical cure. Takenimmediately after meals it digests the food and preventsfermentation in the stomach, from which so many suffer.

In order that everyone may test this remedy for him-self at small cost, the Shakers have placed trial bottles inthe druggists’ hands at ten cents. They contain enough toprove the claims made for the medicine.

Shaker Digestive Cordial can be had from all enterprisingdruggists, who will have no difficulty in getting it throughtheir jobber. In any case where the preparation cannot beobtained, we will send a sample bottle, post-paid, upon re-ceipt of 20 cents in stamps, which barely covers cost ofsample mailing ease and postage.
