Visit our website www.williampatten.hackney.sch.uk The Patten Pages The William Patten Newsletter for Parents and Children As you will have noticed, the KS2 climbing frame has been out of action for a while, due to slight subsidence. We had a ground penetrating radar survey done and work will begin on Monday 5 th February to get it fixed. The climbing frame should be ready to play on when we come back after half term. The children will be relieved to hear that! We will also be losing the lovely brick wall in the small playground by the astroturf. The council did a drone survey and the wall needs to be removed, so we will have to say goodbye to the fireplaces! We are waiting to hear when that work will be done and will let you know. School Council met with Diane this week, who then met with me. It is always so interesting to hear what the children think. School Council had a number of items on their agenda. They think the football rota should be fairer because even though the rota says Year 3 for example, it is mostly boys who play and girls only play on Fridays on their day. We discussed this and have a fairer proposal, which will be presented to KS2 on Monday. School Council said most of the KS2 water fountains are broken. We have ordered new water fountains, which will be installed after half term. The older children on School Council remember ‘Passport Day’ with great affection and would like it back. We can’t fit it in this year, but will do next year! The children are also planning ideas for ‘Nature day’, which is on 26 th February. Nature day was a School Council idea and we can’t wait for it to happen. Thank you to all the children on School Council who are representing their classmates very well and bringing about change in such a positive and eloquent way. Have a lovely weekend! Best wishes Karen Dear parents, What a very short but intense half term! The first two weeks were spent preparing for our Sadler’s Wells performance and last week was the big event itself. We can’t believe we did it! A truly memorable and magical event. Lots of families have asked when the DVD will be ready and I know the editors are working on it, so it should be available soon. I will let you know as soon as I know! We have had a preview of some of the photographs that the photographer took on the night and they are stunning! They include one of the whole audience and it is only then that you realise how many people were there. Issue 124 Friday 2 nd February 2018

Dear parents,

What a very short but intense half term!

Mary Seacole visited William Patten … Year 2 welcomed one of two special visitors into school last week. The children participated in an interactive workshop with Mary Seacole herself! Mary told the story of her life and career as a nurse back in the 19th Century. She described how she had to battle against prejudice because of the colour of her skin, and had to work hard to fulfil her dream of being a nurse. Her life motto was "Never give up", and the children had to remind Mary of this with every defeat she faced, including a rejection from Florence Nightingale herself on her own nursing mission to the Crimea! The children got to bandage up their peers just as nurses would have done whilst in the hospital close to the battle lines of the Crimean War. They learned that Mary was nicknamed "Mother Seacole" by the British soldiers and that she was a kind, caring and a truly inspirational woman. Well done to the Year 2 children for participating so brilliantly in this first workshop!

Tour de Hackney

Tour de Hackney visited William Patten last week and picked up Year 5 on the way! The children put a tremendous amount of effort, enthusiasm and power into cycling 500 metres on stationary bikes. The coaches from Tour de Hackney showed us how to get on a stationary bike safely and advised us that we should be getting one hour's exercise a day. Despite 'jelly' legs, they even volunteered for a second and third go. Well done Year 5!

Come Dine With Us

It was wonderful to see so many parents at our

EYFS Come Dine with Us event on Thursday 18th

January. Over seventy parents, grandparents and

other family members had the opportunity to line

up on the ‘red line’ and sample a selection of Ali’s

delicious food. Reception children enjoyed

showing their parents their lunchtime routine and

loved having their company at lunchtime. Thank

you for being so supportive of all of our school

events.

Don’t forget KS2 Come Dine With Us next

Wednesday 7th February. Please come to join us for

lunch if you can!

Another special visitor to Year 2 … Year 2 welcomed the second of two special visitors into school this week. The children participated in an interactive workshop with Florence Nightingale herself! Florence told the story of her life and career as a nurse back in the 19th Century. She described how she had to work hard to fulfil her dream of being a nurse, despite her family having other ideas on how she should live her life. The children learned about Florence's early life and her love of books and particularly, her love of maths and data. They learned about her journey to Suctari and the horrors Florence and her team of nurses faced when they arrived. We learned how Florence insisted on cleanliness and hygiene, and as a result she saved the lives of countless soldiers who would have otherwise died of secondary illnesses and infections. We also learned that Florence was recognised by Queen Victoria for her efforts and received the Victoria Cross medal for bravery. Well done to the Year 2 children for participating so well in this second workshop!

Personal Best Hackney ‘Personal Bests’ is an Olympic & Paralympic legacy sports programme that uses sport to enthuse individuals to improve and ‘be the best they can be’. Year 3 have the opportunity this term to take part in this exciting sporting and educational programme over 3 sessions. Each session provides an individual improvement target that continually challenges the young person. During the first sessions children are shown techniques and encouraged to throw, jump and run. Their personal best scores are then recorded. At the end of theses introductory sessions the children are informed that their baseline has been set and they will now be competing against their own personal bests. The 3 sessions activities include: 1. Baseline 2. Practice 3. Final

Shuttle Run

Visit to Parasol Unit

(Foundation for Contemporary Art)

This week, 5M brought their enthusiasm and

creative talents to the Parasol Unit art gallery in

Islington. The children enjoyed contemporary art

by Lisa Milroy and impressed the Parasol staff with

their observation skills! Those skills were then

turned into a collective piece of art called ‘Today

We Saw’. Thank you to all our parent helpers who

accompanied us on a fantastic trip!

This time, they were performing their class gymnastics display showing off the skills they have learned this term with our gymnastics coach, Rochelle. Children demonstrated rolls, balances, shapes, turns, hops and jumps, as well as dancing in time to the music and working as a team to be in-time with others. A lovely display by all classes, well done Year 2 and Year 5!

Language of the Month

Amharic is a Semitic language and the national

language of Ethiopia. The majority of the 25

million or so speakers of Amharic can be found

in Ethiopia, but there are also speakers in a

number of other countries, particularly Eritrea,

Canada, the USA and Sweden. The name

Amharic (ኣማርኛ - amarəñña) comes from the

district of Amhara in northern Ethiopia, which is

thought to be the historic centre of the language.
