St. Peter's German Ghurch Records

The following births have been copied from the original St. Peter's German Church records. Located in Washingtontownship, the first church was built circa 1850. This building burned and another was built which was also destroyed by fire. The third building sti l l stands, but has an addition added to the front, changing the appearance to a more modern building. The church is now known as The Hil ltop Community Church.

The early records are written in German and difficult to read. The names of the sponsors for the baptisms are given

but due to the poor copy and small German handwriting we have not included them. The original copy does have a date forall the ptaces that contain a dash (-), but when they were photocopied the date was unfortunately lost in the crease of thebook. lf you would like a copy of any of the records, please write to the Society. Include a SAS and 50 cents to cover ourcost of the copy. The original records are held by a former minister's family.

st. Peter's German Church Records

The following births have been copied from the original St. Peter's German Church records. Located in Washingtontownship, the first church was built circa 1850. This building burned and another was built which was also destroyed by fire. The third building still stands, but has an addition added to the front, changing the appearance to a more modern building. The church is now known as The Hilltop Community Church.

The early records are written in German and difficult to read. The names of the sponsors for the baptisms are givenbut due to the poor copy and small German handwriting we have not included them. The original copy does have a date forall the places that contain a dash (-), but when they were photocopied the date was unfortunately lost in the crease of thebook. If you would like a copy of any of the records, please write to the Society. Include a SAS and 50 cents to cover ourcost of the copy. The original records are held by a former minister's family.

Thomas Robinson's wife died after having been hereabout eight years, and he returned to England, where hedied a few years later.

Francis Robinson, younger brother of Thomas, came toAmerica a few years after his brother had located on thehil l. Francis married "Aunt Jane" Dickson. They were theparents of two children, Will iam and James S.

Will iam became the owner of the Thomas Robinsonfarm, where he passed the greater part of his l i fe. Theother son was the late Gen. James S. Robinson, whoserved with honor through the civil war, and as a memberof congress and as secretary of state.

The late Samuel Robinson was industrious, a hardworker, and an exemplary cit izen, accumulating muchproperty. He added farm to farm until he had one each forhis five children. Hooded GrovesGraves with hoods on them....have you ever heard of such a thing?According to an art ic le in the Spr ing 2001 lssue, Vol .21,#3 of the BerksCounty, PA Genealogical Society, there are two such graves in the MountZion Methodist Cemetery, a small cemetery located in Franklin Township,Columbia County, PA. According to the article there were at one time threeof these graves with wrought iron hoods, or "cages," above them, placed inthe cemetery in the year 1852 when three young women died within sixweeks of each other, cause of death is unknown. In the 1930's, WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers, sponsoredby the federal government, cleaned and restored the cemetery. One of the

, hoods had deteriorated so badly it had to be discarded, but the other two1-'- were refurbished and reset. Workers found under them metal castings

l(-ot doves, which they replaced. The doves are located on the ends of thehooded graves with wings spread, signifying the fl ight of souls. After

restoration, the graves were rededicated November 13, 1999.The tombstones read thus: Sarah Ann, consort of Ranslow Boone, daughter of Floyd and Frances Thomas, died June

18, 1852, aged 22years,6 months, 9 days. Anseth 8., consort of John F. Thomas, died June 26,1852, aged 20 years, 8months, 22 days.

The writeiof the article inquired as to the meaning of the hooded grave. Speculation ranged from preventing jewelry

from being stolen thatwas buried with the bodies, keeping animalsfrom digging up the graves, to preventing body snatchers

from stealing the bodies. Do you have an ideas? Have you ever seen a Hooded grave, if so where? [Source: material

According to the article there were at one time threeof these graves with wrought iron hoods, or "cages," above them, placed inthe cemetery in the year 1852 when three young women died within sixweeks of each other, cause of death is unknown. In the 1930's, WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers, sponsored

~ , '~.<_ by the federal government, cleaned and restored the cemetery. One ofthe,.'/,t '. ".:,"- _ hoods had deteriorated so badly it had to be discarded, but the other two

! I ;' __ -:', were refurbished and reset. Workers found under them metal castings) _.-=-----of doves, which they replaced. The doves are located on the ends of the

~C~~B~ hooded graves with wings spread, signifying the flight of souls. Afterrestoration, the graves were rededicated November 13, 1999.

The tombstones read thus: Sarah Ann, consort of Ranslow Boone, daughter of Floyd and Frances Thomas, died June18,1852, aged 22 years, 6 months, 9 days. Anseth B., consort of John F. Thomas, died June 26,1852, aged 20 years, 8months, 22 days.

The writer of the article inquired as to the meaning of the hooded grave. Speculation ranged from preventing jewelryfrom being stolen that was buried with the bodies, keeping animals from digging up the graves, to preventing body snatchersfrom stealing the bodies. Do you have an ideas? Have you ever seen a Hooded grave, if so where? [Source: materialabstracted from The Hudson Green newsletter, Volume 12, Issue 4, Hudson Genealogical Society.]
