CLAY

An old letter, writin in 1848, by thepreaching at Alton, IL, gives the following factsClay family:

Your wishes to know something about the history of our family could not begratified within the limits of a letter. The following concise accounts mustsuffice. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raleigh brought over tothe Virginia plantations, among others, three brothers, sons of Sir John Clay,of Wales, England. He gave them $10,000 each, which was a very large fortuneat that time. Their names were Charles, Thomas and Henry. They settled onJames Rivver near Jamestown. Two of them, Charles and Thomas had largefamilies. Henry had no children. The name of Henry had been handed down inboth branches of the family with great tenacity ever since. Cassius M. Clay isa decendent of Charles Clay. Henry and myself from Thomas Clay. Thus the twobrothers alluded to are the progenitors of all the Clays in the United States.

My father, as you have heard, was a clergyman of the Baptistdenomination. He died in early life, leaving seven children - four sons andthree daughters, all of whom died without children, with the exception of Henryand myself. My mother was married the second time, and raised a family of sixchildren, two of whom are still living - Nathaniel W. WATKINS and Frank Watkins

residing in Missouri. My brother Henry has had eleven children - sixdaughters and five sons. The daughters are all dead and one son, H. Clay, Jr.,who was killed at the battle of Buena Vista - his wife having previously died, leaving three children, who are with their mother's connections in Louisville.Three of my brother's sons are settled near him in the neighborhood ofLexington. Two of these, Thomas and James B. Clay, are married and doing well -one a lawyer, the other a farmer. John, the youngest, whom you saw atWashington is with his father at Ashland. Theodore, his eldest son, is in thelunatic asylum at Lexington, a confirmed lunatic. (Found in THE ASHLAND TIMESnewspaper, 1 Sept 1859)

the work. They were told by Peter STARN which was the grave to open.Frary lifted the body and took it to Lakefork, where, to the surprise of

the friends, it was found to be the remains of Sarah Kiser, a sister of SamuelKiser, as dress buttons and apparel indicated. The body was lowered to a newgrave, and Frary returned to Reedsburg to try again. Starn acknowledged hismistake, and told Frary to dig at another spot, where he was positive Kiserrested.

Frary exhumed a second body and went to Lakefork and buried it. OnDecoration Day it was found that a second mistake had been made, and that thebody of Peter Starn's own son, James Starn, had been exhumed. It is reportedthat Starn now threatens to prosecute those interested for maliciouslydisturbing his dead son, while Mr. Kiser still peacefully reposes in theReedsburg cemetery.

GEBHART, continued from page 9, Feb 1992 issue:He afterwards learned the art of photography of Mr. ENSMINGER, and then went to ILwhere he worked at this profession. In 1856 he returned home on a visit and whenhe returned to Illinois he took with him a wife, whose maiden name was KatherineNEFF. They lived at that place a number of years and to them four children wereborn, the youngest dying when quite young. On account of the ill health of theirelder daughter, Mary, they moved to Kansas, thinking a change of climate would bebeneficial; but it proved of no avail as she died shortly after arriving at theirnew home. While living here their daughter Amelia was married to Mr. MYERS; theyhave two children. After residing in Kansas a number of years Mr. Gebhart and hisson-in-law and their families moved to California where they still reside. Sincecoming to this State his son Sherman was united in marriage to his cousin, FiannaGebhart and they have four children. And it is since coming to this State he wascalled to mourn the departure of his beloved wife, who died in the year 1892. Mr.Gebhart has been in feeble health for some time.

Christian, was the youngest son and the greater part of his unmarried lifewas spent on the farm helping his father. At the age of twelve years he becamethe proud possessor of the first suit of ready-made clothing that was sold in Ash-land. After having reached manhood's estate he became possessed with the desireto go to the far West to seek his fortune. So one summer day, after bidding hisfriends goodby he started on his journey to the land of promise; but he only gotas far as Council Bluffs, and 'after he had been absent four weeks he made up hismind that there was no cook so good as mother and no place like home and so he re-turned home to wander forth no more. His friends supposed that he was going to bean old bachelor, but in this they were mistaken, for in the fall of 1865 he wasmarried to Miss Eliza ZEHNER, the only child of their nearest neighbors, the mar-riage ceremony being performed by Rev. WEAVER. They took up their residence withhis father-in-law, where they lived until February 1886. While living here theyhad four children. In the year mentioned they moved to California, where theylived a couple of years, and during their residence here their twins, Lillie andWillie were born. They returned to their old home in Ohio where they have sincelived. Their son, Wesley, was married to Miss Alice FACKLER and they have onelittle daughter.

After the marriage of Elizabeth, Miss Polly MILL, a niece of Mr. Gebhart, came to live with them and help them with the housework, and after the marriageof their youngest son Mr. Gebhart quit farming, renting his farm and a part of hishouse to his nephew, Charles MILLS. In the summer of 1877 they went to live withtheir daughter, Mrs. Musser, where they resided the remainder of their lives. Mrs.Gebhart died in the fall of 1884 of old age, being eighty-eight years old. In thefall of 1886 Mr. Gebhart went on a visit to Mrs. Kerr, while Mr. and Mrs. Musserwere to visit to Pennsylvania, but he had been there but a few hours when he start-ed to go down town. While crossing the railroad track he was knocked down by afast train, which he had failed to see in time. He lived but a few hours. Thiswas a sorrowful death to his children. He had reached the good old age of eighty-seven.

On the 8th day of August 1876, the children and grandchildren, with Mrs.STOUT, a half sister of Mrs. Gebhart, and daughter, Mrs. Mill, a sister of Mr.Gebhart, and her children and grandchildren, and Rev. SPRINKLE and wife, met atthe old homestead to help them celebrate the fifty-second anniversary of theirmarriage. It was a pleasant day and an enjoyable time was had by all. A coupleof years later about the same crowd met at Mrs. Musser's and enjoyed a good time.It was then decided to have a reunion once a year, but on account of house room, for there was some marrying done about this time and the relationship was gettinglarger, it was decided to have only the direct descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Gebhartwith Mrs. Mill and daughter Libbie and some minister.

The last reunion that Mother Gebhart attended was held at the home of Mr. Mus-ser, and the last one that Father Gebhart attended was held at the old homesteadabout one month before his death. Not every time are all present at these reunions, but in the year 1893 all those who lived in this State were present. It was held atthe home of Mr. Weston, the old home of Mr. Musser, who had moved to Nova a fewyears previous to this time, and a photograph was taken of the crowd.

These reunions are seasons of sorrow as well as of joy. We are glad becauseall have not met each other during the entire year and it does us good to meet and

talk over the happenings of the year that is past and gone, or sorrow because, whenwe think of the brevity of life, we do not know whether we shall meet again.

Today we have met again and are having a good time. The descendants of Fatherand Mother Gebhart are four children, all living; sixteen grandchildren living andfour dead, and twentythree great-grandchildren living and two dead. Mr. Jacob Geb-hart and family have never attended these reunions, always living in the far West.

Today the old home, a part of which has been built for sixty years, stillstands. Could its walls speak to us they would tell us of many joys and few realsorrows in the life of Mr. Gebhart; could they speak to us they might tell us ofmany times that grandfather and grandmother bowed their heads in prayer for theirchildren; but at no time did they bow their heads at the shame or disgrace of sonor daughter. Could they speak they might say no great wealth did they leave theirchildren, but they left what is far better - a good name. Could they speak theymight say we have stood for many years, but only four pair of eyes have opened tothe light of day for the first time within our sheltering ears, and not one pairhave been closed in death in all those years. Could they speak to us they mightsay we have listened to the crying of babes, to the joyous laughter of littlechildren, to the vows of lovers, to the desires of those advanced in life, and nowin our old age we are left all alone. Could they speak to us they might say, belike your ancestors, good, honorable and upright, and may God be with you till youmeet again. The above article was found in The Ashland Times newspaper, Wed., 23 Sept. 1896.
