OUR 2015 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

In an initiative to help familiarize young Tibetan-Canadians with the workings of Parliament, the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet will coordinate an internship placement program for Canadian students of Tibetan origin with various Parliamentarians. This six-week internship will last from May 4th to June 12th, 2015. As Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet, Bernard Trottier M.P. is pleased to be coordinating this year’s internship program on Parliament Hill. Our internship program will accept applications from Tibetan students all over Canada and then have them placed in various parliamentary offices (in both the House of Commons and Senate). Interns will not only help their offices with their respective office responsibilities, but will also obtain a better understanding of how Canadian government functions through exposure to the workings of parliament. Interns will also participate in special seminars, committee meetings, and meetings to enhance their understanding of various issues and campaigns facing Parliamentarians. WHY SHOULD I JOIN THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM? The Parliamentary Friends of Tibet Internship Program offers young Tibet-Canadians an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Canadian politics and learn about the parliamentary process. Interns will work in the office of a parliamentarian and learn first-hand how parliament functions, and what kind of work parliamentarians engage in. Our interns will also experience the beautiful, diverse and bilingual city of Ottawa – a city that is regularly included in the lists of the world’s most livable cities. Interns will tour the National Capital’s cultural and historical sites, and visit parts of the surrounding Ottawa region.

The experience the interns gain in our program will help them not only in the short-term but also in their long-term future endeavors by giving them reputable work experience that will set them apart from other young Canadians.

HOW WILL YOUR PLACEMENT BE DETERMINED? In the attached application form you will be asked for your first and second preference for which party you wish to work for. We will do our best to accommodate your request, but placement is based on the offices that choose to participate. BEYOND THE OFFICE To augment and enhance our interns’ experience of Ottawa, the program will also have cultural activities organized to broaden and deepen their understanding of Canada. They will tour the city of Ottawa, visiting places like: the Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum, the National Gallery, and a variety of other places. Events or outings will also be organized to allow interns to meet regularly and share their experiences and network with other interns. WHAT WILL THE PROGRAM COST? There is no cost to apply or participate in the program; however, interns will be expected to cover their own living and housing expenses. The PFT will seek to secure funding from various Tibetan organizations and support groups to help cover housing expenses for interns. Currently, funding for our 2015 program is pending. Housing has been arranged for interns at a location convenient to commute to work.

ARE INTERNS PAID REMUNERATION? Remuneration is entirely dependent on the office an intern is placed in, and placement is dependent on the availability of participating offices. In our past programs only some of our interns have received remuneration. HOW DO I APPLY? If you wish to apply to the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet Internship Program please fill out the attached

application and requirements as soon as possible and send it to [email protected]
