Dear Parishioners,

After three special weeks celebrating differing Solemnities, the Church now

continues what is termed, “Ordinary Time.” As I stated before, it is called

“ordinary time” because there are no special Solemnities or special Mysteries in the

life of Jesus. Perhaps a better term might be the “year of the Church” where we

begin to understand our role in and through the life of the Church. It is truly a time

of grace as is the entire liturgical calendar.

In our liturgical calendar, our celebration this weekend is that of the 14th

Sunday of Ordinary Time. Sometimes you and I have a tendency to get caught up

in the things of this world. Too often we might seek material pleasures in life,

sometimes sacrificing our time, talents, and treasures in this pursuit. Often we look

for attention and will do much to promote ourselves at the expense of others. And

more often than not, we live in this world as if it will last forever. Into all of these

tendencies, Jesus entered our world, humbled Himself, became one of us to show us

God’s love and God’s way. It is this same Jesus who invites us to come to Him,

with our lives labored and burdened, and what Jesus will give is His rest and peace.

This sometimes means the cross—but with the cross comes Jesus who helps us car-

ry the yokes of life and truly find the rest and happiness for which we live and seek.

Let that be our prayer and challenge on this 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

I recently received news that Scott Fitzgerald has resigned as our musical

director here at St. Peters to assume the role of a Pastoral Associate at St. Francis

Xavier Church, in Otisville, Michigan. We want to wish him well in his new en-

deavor and pray that he will touch the lives of the people of Michigan as he touched

our lives in his tenure as our music director. His last day will be July 31, 2014. I

am pursuing another avenue in my pastorate to continue the meaningful liturgies to

which we have been accustomed here at St. Peters.

This weekend, a number of our students from Quincy Notre Dame will em-

bark on a type of missionary ministry as they attend a week of labor, service, and

prayer in what is called “Catholic Heart Work Camp.” On behalf of our parish fam-

ily, we send them forth with our prayers and our support. May each of them realize

that through their example and life style in this week of service they will bring the

good news of Jesus and His Church to people who have a number of various needs

in life. Our prayers and support are with you.

I want to welcome Fr. Tom Donovan to our parish family. He is our new

parochial vicar and will be an asset to all of us as He serves this Church. Please

help him to feel at home and help him to adjust to parish life without any type of

prejudgments. I remind you that we are foremost a community of faith, hope and

love. Our faith reminds us of God’s love; our hope reassures us that no matter what

we have done, God’s love lifts us from our ditches; and our love is assisting each

one of us out of our ditches and only to give us new life in the community.

Fr. Leo’s column continued On this Fourth of July weekend, we need to make sure that we give our God thanks for the blessings that He has bestowed upon our country. We also want to thank all those who served our country and who are currently serving this nation in the military, protecting our freedoms and keeping us all safe from harm. We so often take our freedoms for granted and this weekend reminds us that there has been much blood shed and time spent in order to preserve them. As Carl Sandburg said, “I see America, not in the setting sun of a black night of despair ahead of us, I see America in the crim-son light of a rising sun fresh from the burning, creative hand of God. I see great days ahead, great days possi-ble to men and women of will and vision.” God bless America should be our focus this weekend as we cele-brate our Independence. We received our new 2014 Assessment for the Annual Catholic Services Appeal. It is listed in the col-umn next to this one. I hope and pray that as stewards of this parish you will continue to be as generous to-wards this appeal as you did last year. Thank you for your stewardship in advance. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: A Dutchman was explaining the red, white, and blue Netherlands flag to an American. “Our flag is symbolic of our taxes. We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bills, and blue when we pay them.” The American nodded. “It’s the same in the USA only we see stars, too!”
