SEPTEMBER 22, 2019
Dear Friends,
This past week, I met with the parish pastoral council for the first time. For me, it was mostly a chance to listen.
I heard how proud they are of this parish! They value the warmth of the people, the sense of teamwork, many people willing to volunteer their time, the diverse nature of RA, the RA Catholic Academy, and the vitality of the Sports program, the sense of “home” they find here, among many other aspects of parish life. I heard of the many challenges we face as well: like the drop in Mass attendance and financial struggles, the need for greater connection between the English-speaking and the Spanish-speaking of our parish, and the need to deepen our understanding of the faith. I also heard some dreams. They dream to attract more people to join our parish (especially those who have drifted from the faith), to offer more training for our parish ministers, and to do more to involve our young people in various parish ministries. I was really impressed with the council, and I am eager to work with them, and all of you, as we seek to listen to God’s Spirit speaking to us.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus praises the shrewdness of the steward—who sees how his situation has changed, and makes changes to assure his material security in the future. Of course, Jesus’ point is not that we should ever cheat anyone, but that we should have the same concern for our spiritual future. How are we using our time, talent and treasure, to build up our church and to prepare for the Kingdom?
Peace, Father Tom
Queridos amigos,

SEPTEMBER 22, 2019
Sunday, Sep 22, 2019 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Who’s the boss? A parish secretary worked at an urban church with five resident priests. One priest was retired, two had ministries elsewhere, and two were actively engaged in the parish itself. The secretary worked for all five men, handling incoming calls and written correspondence, crafting bulletins, running errands, even sewing the occasional loose button or laundering a stained sweater. No matter whose task she performed first, she never escaped the charge of favoritism, because anything more than one boss doesn’t work. If Jesus is our Lord, everything and everybody else takes a backseat.
TODAY'S READINGS: Amos 8:4-7; 1 Timothy 2:1-8; Luke 16:1-13 (135). “No servant can serve two masters.”
