“A good father knows how to wait and knows how to forgive from the depths of his heart. Certainly, he also knows how to correct with firmness: he is not a weak father, submissive and sentimental. The father who knows how to correct without humiliating is the one who knows how to protect without sparing himself.” – Pope Francis

Stewardship

A Way of Life

Stewardship Reflection

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

— Matthew 25:40

We are called to evangelize and there is no better way to do this than to show love to all. If there is to be more Christians in the world than it can only happen through our service to others. You can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Think about that; if you donated a few hours of your time to a certain service project or opportunity, you could brighten the days of an individual who needed it. Let us make Long Island a better place for someone today.

Living Stewardship

We are called to evangelize, and what better way is there to do that than to love. Show love today to all you encounter, that is the simplest and easiest way to love. We can go a step further by helping those who need love the most.

And Our Story Continues… As our 125th anniversary as a parish

draws to a close, our story continues on....

In the coming months we continue to tell our history and share our mission in these pages.

We have a great deal to celebrate as we continue to pray and serve.

HISTORY OF SAINT AGNES CATHEDRAL PARISH

Chapter 8 – Growth of the Parish and its Schools

When the St. Agnes’ Grammar School opened in September, 1917 it started with 60 students. However, enrollment in the school grew quickly and an addition to the convent was needed to accommodate the increase in the number of Religious Sisters teaching at the school. This addition was made in 1919.

A classical course for high school students (as it was called at the time) was proposed in September, 1922. In that year the property on the south side of College Place (Quealy Place) was acquired as a potential site for the placement of the new high school building. However, property north of the Church fronting on N. Village Avenue also became available that year and it was acquired and determined to be a better location for the high school. In 1923, construction of the new high school building was commenced and in the fall of 1924 a new brick two-story high school building was opened and its first students enrolled.

With the school’s enrollment increasing at both the elementary level and the new high school, the parish and its surrounding areas became very attractive to Catholics to relocate to. The parish experienced rapid growth in membership. In 1926 a second priest was added to the parish staff when Father Joseph Egan arrived from Brooklyn. Soon after Father Egan’s arrival another priest, Father William O’Keefe was also assigned by the Bishop to work and live at St. Agnes.

The growth of the parish and the success of its grammar school and high school necessitated the addition of more Sisters to teach in the expanded number of classes in both buildings. By 1928 the Sisters residing at St. Agnes overwhelmed the capacity of their existing convent to comfortably house their increased numbers. They were so cramped that their need was given special attention and a new convent was proposed, approved, designed and built in less than one year. A three-story brick structure (which is now used as the Parish Ministry Building on the corner of Quealy Place and N. Village Avenue) opened for use as the new convent just before Christmas in 1928. The day after the Sisters moved into the new convent, the old residence was taken down so that the architectural details and design of the new convent could be seen and admired by all.

In the face of our country’s challenges, and challenges within the Church herself,

Catholics find strength in the hope of Jesus Christ. We want to share that hope with everyone.

Religious freedom gives us the space to carry out the mission that Jesus has entrusted to the Church. Religious freedom means that Catholics, and all people of goodwill, are free

to seek the truth and to live in accordance with that truth, and so to strengthen our common life as a nation. Beginning June 22nd, the Feast of Saints Thomas More and John Fisher, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops celebrates Religious Freedom Week. In the midst of our current challenges, join us as we seek the kingdom and find Strength in Hope. To learn more visit our website at www.usccb.org/ReligiousFreedomWeek.

Giussani Series at

the Sheen Center

Fr. Luigi Giussani, founder of the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation (which organizes the annual Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Encounter) was an original and innovative thinker and educator, able to propose Christianity in a way that answers the challenges of our time. The annual “Giussani Series on Faith and Modernity” will take place on Saturday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Sheen Center, 18 Bleeker St., New York, NY and will focus specifically on the distinctive features of Giussani’s proposal for Christian education. Speakers are philosopher Dr. Timothy O’Malley, Director of Education and Academic Director at Notre Dame University, and Dr. John Zucchi, History Professor at McGill University. The event is free of charge but reservations are required at sheencenter.org/shows/giussani. The Sheen Center is a project of the Archdiocese of NY. All are invited!

13 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Today, consider a dad like Tom. It was the weekend and I was at a local bar partying. That was my routine. Apparently the guy near me was partying harder and next thing I know we’re in a bad fight. And in that one heated, drunken moment I lost everything. I was arrested for assault and sentenced to seven years in one of the worst prisons in

New York State. All I could keep thinking was, “This isn’t possible. It can’t be happening to me.” But it was. When I got there I did everything I could to get out early. I took part in a prison substance abuse program because alcohol had been a mitigating circumstance in my case. I also served as an assistant to a college professor who taught classes for inmates, helping them earn high school diplomas. I loved the work and did that for four years. In the meantime I trained myself to read a book a day, joined a music program and taught myself to play guitar. But even with all my good behavior it was still five and a half years before I was released on parole. When I finally got back home to Long Island I tried hard to start life over but it was difficult. Not only did I have to find a job and a

place to live, I had to reconnect with family and figure out who my real friends were. To make matters worse I was unhappy with the outpatient program I had been assigned to. I felt like I was just a number to them so I took a chance and transferred to Catholic Charities. The change in atmosphere was like night and day. They had a more spiritual approach and didn’t judge me for my past. In fact, they helped me understand that my experiences were valuable life lessons. I finally started feeling good about myself, like I was a part of the community. Today, I work a full time job, have a beautiful family and I haven’t had a drink since 2010. It wasn’t easy but the team at Catholic Charities gave me the get-up-and-go I needed to make a fresh start. Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in the lives of other dads like Tom.
