Diocesan Endowment Campaign Faith to Move Mountains
The Diocesan Endowment campaign has been
proceeding very successfully here at St Catharine-St
Margaret parish over the past two months. As we have
already said, each Catholic family/individual in the
diocese will be asked to be a part of this campaign.
The campaign has been supported and conducted by a
group of parishioners have formed a committee here in our
parish, to assist and work with me on this project. I am
grateful for their leadership and dedication on behalf of our
parish. If you hear from one of these volunteers, please meet
with them, kindly listen to what they have to say, and
prayerfully consider supporting this vital undertaking.
It should be noted that 30% of funds raised here will
revert back to the parish to be used for our many
needs here. After we achieve our parish goal of $1.85m,
the parish will be the beneficiaries of 70% pledged
above goal.
Although the campaign has only reached a very small
percentage of parish families, it is heart warming to
report that the parish has already successfully
accomplished over 45% of the goal of raising $1.825
million.
Over the next weeks, you will be hearing more about
the campaign as we seek to invite everyone to
participate in this extraordinary effort.
I (Fr Cullen) will be happy to meet with anyone or
answer any questions you may have over the next
weeks.

Enroll a deceased loved one in the St. Catharine- St. Margaret Parish
Memorial Mass Society
Enrolled members will share in special Masses to be celebrated for 12 First Sundays at the 9am mass at St. Catharine Church. Members names will be listed in the bulletin and announced at mass during the first month of their enrollment and will remain in the memorial mass society book for 12 months which will be placed on the altar during these special masses. You can enroll a loved one in the Mass Society at the rectory. The cost $10.
When Pope Francis visits the USA in September, he has
announced that he will canonize Junipero Serra during his
visit. This announcement has caused some comment and
even dismay in some quarters. Blessed Junipero was a very
zealous missionary to the New World, but has also been
accused of endorsing and even participating in some of the
worst excesses of Spanish colonialism in the 17th century
California.
What the controversy really reveals is the mistaken
assumption on the part of some, that the saints were perfect
people. We know this not to be true. St Paul himself is a
prime example. He is one of the supreme saints in the
history of the church, but we know that, in fact early in his
life, he reveled in the persecution of Christians. He was, in
point of fact, a murderer and an enemy of the church. The
same is true of many other saints. St. Augustine, we know
was far from perfect, especially in his youth. St. Jerome was
a virtual terror to many of his contemporaries. The recent
BBC TV series "Wolf Hall" portrays St. Thomas More as a
religious fanatic, schemer, misogynist, and in the words of
author Hilary Mantel's hero Thomas Cromwell, as a "Blood
soaked hypocrite" who tortures Protestants in his cellar.
Cambridge historian Eamon Duffy disagrees with this
characterization of St. Thomas More, pointing out that
although he was a relentless pursuer of heresy, he was also a
kind, religious and compassionate man. "More was neither
blood soaked nor a hypocrite", he writes "but he was a
man of his times, not of ours."
All of this suggests that canonization does not mean that the
church is declaring that anyone was perfect. All saints were
imperfect human beings, sometimes even with the
accusation of serious crimes. And this was sometimes true
even after their conversion. It would correctly be said that
many of these select people became saints precisely because
they were able to succeed spiritually in spite of their glaring
imperfections. Apart from the fact that we tend to evaluate
yesterday's actions using the moral compass of today, the
church will always continue to canonize imperfect saints.
The question for us is to ask what we want to emulate and
admire and praise, as well as avoid and condemn when we
meditate on the lives of these men and women.

St. Catharine Live Streaming
Check out St. Catharine Church live streaming on the web! Go to the parish website stcatharine-stmargaret.org and follow the prompt at the bottom of the page. You can also access the site by going to the Livestream web site and typing in St. Catharine-St. Margaret. Contrary to the (of course) anonymous flyers left in the church, the microphone only records what is spoken into the public address system. Livestream is of great benefit to those that are homebound and not able to attend church regularly. We have also found it valuable when people are not able to make the trip to Spring Lake for a loved one’s funeral or wedding. If you have any questions about our Livestream system please contact the rectory.

And finally...A little Catholic Humor
Sister was in the shower in the convent when the door bell rang. ”Who’s there?” she called out. “I’m the blind man” replied the man at the door. So she stepped out of the shower and opened the door. He came in looked at her and said, “I’m here to measure for the new blinds”.
