Inside this issue:

The third Sunday in June is Father's Day. Ever thought how the idea of Father's Day came about? And Parliament tells me this week that Fathers are not essential to the family.

It all started way back in 1909 because of a woman in Spokane, Washington, named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. That year she heard a church sermon about the merits of setting aside a day to honour one's mother. Mother's Day was just beginning to gather wide-spread attention in the United States at this time (different to the good old English Mother-

ing Sunday on the 4th Sunday of Lent!). But Sonora Dodd knew that it was her father who had selflessly raised herself and her five siblings by himself after their mother had died in childbirth. So what she heard gave Sonora the idea to petition for a day to honour fathers, and in particular, her own father, William Jackson Smart. And so on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane. Gradually, other people in other cities caught on and started celebrating fathers too and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day - now a permanent, national holiday in the USA and something that has become popular here in the UK.

Today, Father's Day is a great time to celebrate any sort of male role models, like uncles or grandfathers, as well as dads. Certainly Father's Day has become a day for greeting card companies to rejoice, and sales of the most popular gifts for Dad (shirts, ties, and electric razors) increase considerably. Perhaps most telling of all, though, is how children continue to see their fathers: more 'reverse charge calls' to home are recorded on Father's Day in America then on any other day of the year!

A few days ago the House of Commons effectively declared fathers as irrelevant in Britain.. Politicians have again driven yet another nail into the coffin of the traditional family. The Archbishop of York warns that it will remove the father from the heart of the family. The Archbishop of Westminster says that it would be wrong to pass a law where parenthood was not recognised because clearly there must be a father for a child,. Ian Duncan Smith said “Taking (the requirement for a father) away would be as though we are saying to couples, particularly in the heterosexual world, that this is not an issue, that fathers are not important, they’re less important than mothers, and therefore you don’t need to take them into considera-tion.”

We can say a great deal about what makes up a family in this day and age…..and it would seem that anything goes. As a dinosaur that’s almost extinct, I do believe that the

concept of the traditional family is at the heart of society and certainly Christianity. Of course there will always be single parent families due to the sadness of divorce, bereavement or choice. However, absence of father figures in broken homes, schools etc accounts for much of our broken society. It was Winston Churchill who asked “Where does the family start? It starts with a young man falling in love with a girl - no superior alternative has yet to be found.” Good old Winnie!!

God bless you all Peter Rector

Summer Solstice 21st June

Sol + stice come from two Latin words meaning 'sun' and 'to stand still'. As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. The Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, and the Southern Hemisphere celebrates in December.

A Canticle for Brother Sun

June 2008 RECTOR ’S CORNER S t James the Grea t Pa r i sh News

Does the past haunt you?

A lady had driven her car into a ditch, and there she sat. When the police arrived, they asked her what had happened. "I was looking in the rear view mirror, instead of looking at the road ahead," she explained. What a thought! There is no way to go forward if your eyes are focused on what's be-hind - either in driving, or in life. A lot of people 'ditch' themselves because they can't take their eyes off the past, focus on the future, and move ahead, with hope in God.

Give up all hope for a better yesterday. You can't change the past. It is dangerous to obsess over it. Instead, consider that there are over 500 verses in the Bible that tell us that God is merciful and longing to forgive us and restore us, if we only turn to him. Listen to these words from Isaiah: 'Do not remember the former things, neither consider the things of old. For behold, I am doing a new thing…' (Is 43:18,19) Don't let the past ruin your future - let God begin to do that 'new' thing in your life.

The following are actual call centre conversa-tions….

Wrong number Customer: 'I've been ringing you on 0700 2300 for two days. Why didn't you answer?' Travel agent: 'Where did you get that number from, sir?'. Customer: 'It's there on the door to your Travel Centre'. Operator: 'Sir, they are our opening hours'

Jack Caller to Samsung Electronics: 'Can you give me the telephone number for Jack?' Operator: 'I'm sorry, sir, I don't understand who you are talking about'. Caller: 'On page 1, section 5, of the user guide it clearly states that I need to unplug the fax ma-chine from the AC wall socket and telephone Jack before cleaning. Now, can you give me the num-ber for Jack?' Operator: 'I think you mean the telephone point on the wall'.

Clue Caller to RAC Motoring Services: 'Does your Euro-pean Breakdown Policy cover me when I am travel-ling in Australia?' Operator: 'Doesn't the product give you a clue?'

Other side? Caller (enquiring about legal requirements while travelling in France ): 'If I register my car in France , do I have to change the steering wheel to the other side of the car?

Fish bar Caller to Directory Enquiries: 'I'd like the number of the Argoed Fish Bar in Cardiff.' Operator: I'm sorry, there's no listing. Is the spelling correct?' Caller: 'Well, it used to be called the Bargoed Fish Bar but the 'B' fell off'.

Sure Then there was the caller who asked for a knitwear company in Woven. Operator: 'Woven? Are you sure?' Caller: 'Yes, of course. That's what it says on the la-bel; Woven in Scotland.'

Breath On another occasion, a man making heavy breathing sounds from a phonebox told a worried operator: 'I haven't got a pen, so I'm steaming up the window to write the number on'.

Right-click Tech Support: 'I need you to right-click on the Open Desktop'. Customer: 'OK'. Tech Support: 'Did you get a pop-up menu?'. Customer: 'No'. Tech Support: 'OK. Right-click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?' Customer: 'No'. Tech Support: 'OK, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?'. Customer: 'Sure. You told me to write 'click' and I wrote 'click''.

Britain’s places of worship provide a vital service to their local communities but are under threat as never before. They need to be saved for the sake of this and future generations.

(i) The Government to increase funding for the conservation of places of worship

(ii) Government grants to be introduced to enable places of worship to become focal points for the community

(iii) Planning restrictions to be introduced to

prevent disused places of worship being turned into pubs or nightclubs

(iv) Listed places of worship to maintain a full rebate for VAT on repair work

(v) The Government to make it easier for places of worship to be adapted for community use

“Just as the twentieth century in heritage terms was about our great historic houses, the twenty-first will be about these churches.”Sir Roy Strong

“A good church is a focus for the community in the literal sense of the word – a place which keeps the common life warm and alive.”Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

“I approve of this campaign - it is important that we all support churches in this country as places of prayer and for the benefit of the entire community.”Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop of Westminster

“Our parish churches represent so much of what is important to us all: the unique landscape and architecture, and a thousand years of social, political and religious history.”Loyd Grossman, Chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust

WI NEWS We had five visitors at our May meeting - one from as far away as Australia, although I must admit she hadn’t come that far just to visit us - she was staying with Eileen Nancekivell. It was lovely to see everyone wearing their posh hats - it looked just like Ladies Day at Ascot….. apart from the Bookie and her Runner, they looked more like Laurel and Hardy. It was great fun, but don’t panic we didn’t really gamble in the Sunday School Room although there was a bottle of wine for the best hat, which was won by Barbara Williams. I think she had everything on her hat apart from the kitchen sink! The strawberries and cream went down well too.

Members were reminded of the Group Meeting to be held in Marhamchurch on the 19th May which falls on the same day as the Annual Parish Meeting where Shirley Rowe will give our report. Coming up soon is our visit to Holmleigh Garden Centre for lunch, and of course the Village Fete is not that far away when we will be asking for donations towards the tea.

On a more serious note I (Pat) reported back on the Spring Countdown EGM which I attended along with Joan Garrett in April. This included the two Resolutions which Doreen Jones will have to vote on, on our behalf, at the AGM in Liverpool. Having thought about the pros and cons we were pretty unanimous that she should vote in favour of urging the Government to provide treatment and therapy in a more appropriate and secure residential environment rather than the imprisonment of people with severe mental health problems. The other Resolution was not so easy. It was to urge the Government to urge the EU to ban bottom trawling which causes catastrophic loss of marine life. At the EGM in April we heard two speakers - a representative from Greenpeace pointing out the adverse effect of bottom trawling, with nets the size of a rugby pitch, on marine life. The second a representative from the Fishing Industry reminding us that we like to eat fish - fishing contributes £25 million to the economy and one fisherman at sea provides ten more jobs on shore. Tough one that! After much thought we decided we would let Doreen vote as appropriate when she has heard more information from both sides.

Our meeting in June will take place in and around the Church with Winnie and Joe - both mines of information. Afterwards we will have a cup of tea at West Cottage. Visitors always welcome - on this occasion we might have to do a relay with chairs and cups and saucers!

Dear Friends,

It's May, and the time for the cuckoo to arrive so they say; I haven't heard of one this year, although last year, the first cuckoo was heard well before the end of April.

I am not a bird watcher, in fact I know very little about birds, but I do know - as most people know - that cuckoo's lay their eggs in other bird's nests. The cuckoo is a large bird, and usually lays its solitary egg in the nest of a much smaller bird. The little bird struggles to hatch the egg, and once it has hatched, it sets about turfing all it's rivals out of the nest. With only one chick to feed, and yet an extremely large chick, the mother bird strives to feed it's ever growing appetite, sometimes wearing herself out in the process. I don't know why the cuckoo behaves like it does. It seems very unkind, and yet the mother bird is prepared to sacrifice her own health so that the chick may survive.

The behaviour of the cuckoo is not the sort we would condone in a human being, and it is certainly not the way the bible teaches us to live, and yet there are some similarities.

The mother bird is prepared to give everything for the chick - you could call it love. And that is just how God treats us. No matter what we do, God loves us. He may not always be happy with our behaviour, but he loves us more than we can ever imagine, and he will let nothing interfere with that. That is what he constantly tries to teach us; that love is the most powerful gift of all; it is so powerful that it can overcome everything the world throws at us - if we allow it to. And the reason it is so powerful? Because love is the only thing we take with us when we die.

And so the mother bird displays this most powerful of all emotions, as she cares for the cuckoo chick, and perhaps after all, that is the answer - the love of God is above all else, and not even an impostor in the nest can change that.

With all good wishes, Joy Wilson

Kilkhampton Parish Council Keith W Taylor Clerk to the Parish Council

Brooklea Stibb Bude

Cornwall EX23 9HP

01288 354 636 Parish Council Meeting

The Parish Council Meeting was held on Monday 12th May with Rollo McGrath in the chair. As a vacancy existed on the Parish Council due to a resignation, Reg Hambley who was present, was requested by the chairman to be co-opted to fill that position, which he agreed to do. The necessary paperwork was completed at that time.

Matters discussed included the Annual Parish Meeting on the 19th May where we hoped to have a representative from SITA present. He will be speaking about Tiscott Wood and all aspects of recycling. Progress reports were taken about the proposed new bus shelter at North Close and the new, and replacement Parish Notice Boards. Discussions also took place about the PCC Website, the maintenance of Lamb Park and the Annual Safety Report. It was agreed to hold a Village Clean-up on Monday 9th June, commencing at North Close bus shelter at 6pm. Any residents who would like to attend and help would be most welcome.

A report was taken about our local police and their priorities for the coming year which included information about the training, and success of the Kilk Speed Watch. Reports were also taken about the recent School Governors Meeting, the footpaths and walks, and the Grenville Rooms. CCC have been asked to repair the pedestrian railing outside Lamb Park, to examine a damaged manhole cover in Jubilee Close and, as a result of a complaint from a resident NCDC have been asked to look at the safety of a local building.

Correspondence had been received from BT who wish to remove the Public Telephone Boxes at North Close and Thurdon, as they state that it is no longer economic to maintain them both. Anyone who has an observation about this proposed telephone box removal should contact the Clerk as soon as possible so that our measured response can be formulated. Other correspondence discussed included an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Conference, Minerals Development Framework, Minerals Planning, a meeting about One Cornwall, HM Revenue and Customs, and Rural Bus Services. The Parish Council has sent a letter to NCDC in support of the Football Club with the object of trying to progress the rebuilding of the buildings in the park.

Planning Applications were discussed for, John Holden of Almardor, Canada Lane, for the replacement of an agricultural building with another, J Parrish for land adjacent to Burridge Farm, Stibb, for the erection of an agricultural and fodder store, Mrs S Jinks of Golden Privets, for the sub division of a dwelling to create 2 separate dwellings, and Mr M Luxon of Sandymouth Bay Holiday Park for the erection of an extension to the existing warehouse to provide a retail shop for visitors. Planning Approvals have been received for; Penstowe Leisure Ltd, G Thomas & H Van Damm of Rick Park Farm, and two for Sandymouth Bay Holiday Park. Planning Refusals were received for; Mr & Mrs Littlejohns of Tremooie, Stibb, and Sandymouth Bay Holiday Park.

The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 2nd June at 7.30pm at the Grenville Rooms.
