Palm Beach Synagogue

In January 1994, a small group of dedicated people started holding traditional Shabbat services at Temple Emanuel, in Palm Beach. This gathering was transformed into a community with the arrival of Rabbi Moshe and Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner.

Based on their philosophy of outreach and inclusiveness, the Scheiners were passionate in their desire to “make a difference.” From its humble beginnings, Palm Beach Synagogue has blossomed into a flourishing center of Jewish life and activity with approximately 300 members.

Palm Beach Synagogue prides itself on being a place of warm welcome for Jews from all walks of life and all levels of Jewish observance, while maintaining its abiding adherence to traditional Jewish law and observance of mitzvot. With its inviting spirit, our Synagogue is a place where people are committed to the love and support of our fellow Jews, religious traditions, the community at large, and the State of Israel.

Today, the Synagogue is housed in a beautifully renovated edifice, in the heart of Palm Beach Island, two blocks north of the Breakers Hotel. It is a center for traditional Jewish life and education for adults, teens and children. The Synagogue offers unique programs in Jewish education and communal life, numerous youth activities, holiday celebrations, daily morning and afternoon/evening minyanim and weekly Shabbat as well as holiday services.

In the summer of 2011, the Synagogue entered the last phase of its recent building renovations and the entire east façade on North County Road was transformed into a unified exterior keeping with the existing architecture.

The Educational and Community Programs described in the Program Guide ~ 5773 are sponsored by Gloria & Harvey Kaylie, Judy & Dr. Edward Steinberg, and Lois & Martin Zelman.

Palm Beach Synagogue thanks the Kaylie, Steinberg and Zelman families for their generous support, dedication and commitment to Jewish learning and culture.

5773 Program Guide | 1

Dear Friends,We proudly present to you the Kaylie, Steinberg and Zelman

Palm Beach Synagogue Program Guide for 2012/2013 -5773,

Your Gateway to Judaism in Palm Beach.

King David says, “Tov Lihodot L’Hashem” — it is good to give

thanks to Hashem. This past year, Palm Beach Synagogue

celebrated its Chai anniversary, and we are grateful to have experienced the phenomenal

growth of our Synagogue from its inception as a small minyan to its current vibrancy and

dynamism. Today, we are blessed to be a spiritual home to a broad community of families

and adults of different backgrounds and affiliations, all seeking to deepen their

connection to Hashem and their understanding of Torah.

Palm Beach Synagogue is a synagogue filled with warmth and friendship, as well as

intellectual, emotional and spiritual fulfillment. Our Synagogue has a dazzling array

of programs to offer which reflect the diversity of our community and the many different

ways that individuals access the beauty and meaning of Torah. There are adult beginner

and advanced courses, children’s and teen education, holiday celebrations, a book club,

cantorial and musical events, a film festival, women’s events, guest lecturers, a mission

to Israel, singles programs, as well as Chesed and volunteering opportunities. I invite you

to participate in these programs and help us continue building our community.

Traditionally, a Synagogue has been referred to by two names, a “beit ha’kneset,” a house

of gathering and a “beit ha’medrash,” a house of learning. Our Synagogue exemplifies an

amalgam of both concepts. We are a community lighthouse which draws together people

traveling from different directions but gathering around the warm light of Torah. The

Torah is our beacon that has guided us and kept us together as a nation for thousands

of years, while our synagogues served as the portable homeland of the Jewish people.

The keys to P.B.S.—Prayer, Benevolence and Study—are literally in your hands.

We are delighted to welcome you to join us throughout the year, so we can learn, pray

and grow together as we respect diversity and celebrate unity.

Looking forward to greeting you in Shul,

– Rabbi Moshe E. Scheiner

Page 4: THE PALM BEACH SYNAGOGUE - ShulCloud

Dear Fellow Members and Friends, The Program Guide for 5773 exemplifies the philosophy of Palm

Beach Synagogue as a center for Judaism that is welcoming,

dedicated to Jewish values and traditions, and spiritually inspiring.

Under the leadership of our beloved Rabbi Moshe Scheiner, we

open our doors and hearts to those who want to pray together

and become part of our community. We welcome all—adults,

teens, children, newcomers, seniors and singles—and offer

opportunities for social connection, and spiritual and intellectual

growth. We are very proud to boast that we are the only synagogue in Palm Beach that

conducts morning, afternoon and evening services every day of the year.

As you peruse this Program Guide, you will find a full range of programs for the coming

year. Our adult education classes provide stimulating classes in Bible, Talmud, Jewish

law and customs, Hebrew language and Yiddish, and there are programs in arts and

culture, including our Jewish film series, book club and current affairs roundtable.

We have assembled a wide spectrum of guest lecturers and Scholars-in-Residence

who will enrich our knowledge of Torah, and deepen our understanding of issues

of interest to the Jewish community and the State of Israel. Our women’s programs,

under the guidance of our wonderful Rebbetzin Dinie, are guaranteed to motivate

and strengthen our knowledge and bonds of friendship. We trust that our prayer

services will be elevated through the voices of our visiting cantors, and that you will

enjoy our celebratory events associated with the Jewish holidays. There is also a full

array of special programs and educational opportunities for our children and youth.

We look forward to serving your needs. Our only requirement we ask of you is your

attendance—to take advantage of all that we offer for your personal growth and

development, including world renowned scholars and personalities.

As your newly elected President, it is my honor to wish everyone a very Happy and

Healthy New Year, and a wonderful New Season enriched by the many activities,

classes, lectures, programs, celebrations and events enumerated in this Program

Guide in the year to come. I look forward to greeting you there!

– Barbara T. R. Zimet, President

Yom Ha’Shoah

Memorial Program Power Point PresentationMonday, april 8 7:00 pm Join us to commemorate Yom Ha’Shoah with Mr. Howard Herskowitz, author of “Aaron’s Journey,” and watch his riveting Power Point presentation on his family’s story.

Mr. Howard Herskowitz convinced his father, Aaron, to tell his story despite resistance to revisiting those nightmarish memories. In 1990, when Aaron was seventy-five years old, Howard Herskowitz and

his brother Louis accompanied their parents to Bilke (presently in the Ukraine) for the first time since the end of World War II. Howard Herskowitz documented his father’s story, both on film and in writing, captur-ing all the dramatic elements of Aaron’s Journey. Mr. Herskowitz’s upbringing by two Jewish Holocaust survivors fostered a life-long interest in history, with an especially passionate curiosity about the lack of Jewish resistance during World War II. When Mr. Her-skowitz became a lawyer, he always maintained em-pathy for the innocent underdog in a conflict against seemingly insurmountable odds.

“The phases of the moon validate and sanctify women at all stages of our spiritual, emotional and physical lives.”

Rosh Chodesh, the celebration of the beginning of the Jewish new month, is an especially meaningful day for Jewish women and has blossomed into a celebration of women and femininity. According to tradition, when the children of Israel built the golden calf, the women refused to participate. As a reward, they were given the day of Rosh Chodesh as a special women’s holiday. Women throughout Jewish history have celebrated Rosh Chodesh by taking a break from their everyday lives and gathering together. Women are invited to join our monthly Chodesh Group as we gather to celebrate the new month and our lives as Jewish women.

Challah has many spiritual and some would say magical components. What starts as just six basic ingredients—flour, yeast, eggs, water, sugar and salt—can transform into meditation, blessings and prayers. Learn the deeper spiritual elements of each ingredient and make the most “heavenly” loaves using Dinie’s new Challah recipe!

There is something about preparing Challah dough that can only be described as “real.” The rhythm of kneading and the fragrance of the loaves are as close as one can get to blending the two worlds in which we live—spiritual and physical. Shabbat is the soul of the week. Bread-making becomes something more, something part and parcel with the way Shabbat bonds these two worlds.

Teen Programs

Suzanne & Joseph Michaan HIP Teen Israel Program

An incredible opportunity for public school teens to explore the exciting sites of Israel. Participants will visit from the Golan Heights to the shores of Eilat and everywhere in-between, with NCSY TJJ (The Jerusa-lem Journey ) followed by a week of PBS HIP. PBS HIP is learning and experiencing the good deeds of Tikun Olam—social action programs. Teens volunteer at various organizations that help those in need—sports center for disabled kids & teens, soup kitchens, pick-ing produce for homeless shelters, shabbat pack-aging for victims of terror and Ethiopian absorption centers, just to name a few. Giving back to Israel by volunteering is the most rewarding feeling ever!

JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

Welcome to the Waks Family (2003) Saturday, January 12, 2013 7:30 pm

Welcome to the Waks Family is a portrait of the largest family in Australia. The parents—Zephaniah and Haya Waks—follow strict Orthodox Judaism, as do their seventeen children born into this wonderful and loving family. They live in Melbourne, within a Jewish community that is largely closed to the out-side world. Yet, hidden within the tight social fabric of school, work, synagogue and family life are many surprises that challenge the common assumptions about the lifestyle and values of such a family. Fea-turing our very own Rabbi Didy Waks, with special guest appearances by Rabbi and Mrs. Zephaniah Waks from Melbourne.

Killing Kasztner, The Jew Who Dealt with nazis (2009) Thursday, February 28, 2012 7:00 pm

Hero or Traitor? The movie is about a Jew accused of collaborating with the Nazis. Rezso Kasztner, known as the Jewish Schindler, negotiated face to face with Adolf Eichmann, rescuing 1700 Jews on a train to Switzerland. Yet Kasztner was condemned as a traitor in his adopted country of Israel. He was accused as a collaborator in a trial and verdict that divided a nation and forever stamped him as the “man who sold his soul to the devil.” He was ultimately assassinated by Jewish right wing extremists in Tel Aviv in 1957. Director Gaylen Ross investigates this tale of mur-der, intrigue, and heroism through accounts of the inflammatory political trial, startling revelations after 50 years by Kasztner’s assassin, Ze’ev Eckstein, and a chilling meeting between the killer and Kasztner’s daughter, Zsuzsi.

Follow Me, The Yoni netanyahu Story (2012) Tuesday, February 5, 2013 7:00 pm

The story of Yonatan Netanyahu, commander of an elite Israeli army commando unit who was killed during Operation Entebbe. Learn about the hos-tage-rescue mission carried out at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on July 4, 1976, after members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the German Revolutionary Cells hijacked an Air France plane with 248 passengers aboard.

For My Blood You Shall Live Thursday, April 25, 2013 7:00 pm

Learn the story of Avraham (“Yair”) Stern, who found-ed the Fighters for the Freedom of Israel (Lehi), also known as the Stern Gang. Coming to Israel from Poland at the age of 18 , Stern studied at the Hebrew University and joined the Irgun in 1932, a more militant army than the Haganah which was under the author-ity of the local labor movement. In 1940, Stern split from the Irgun when it supported the British in their fight against the Nazis. Stern dedicated his life to the establishment of an independent State of Israel, free of British colonialism. His new underground army was not as successful as Stern hoped due to the lack of ad-equate funding. The British eventually captured Stern and he was killed on February 12, 1942. His son, Yair, was born a few months after his death and is a verteran broadcast journalisht and TV news anchor in Israel. In this film, Stern’s son takes us on a moving personal journey of his father’s heroic and daring life.

Saving IsraelHow the Jewish People Can Win a War That May never EndBy Daniel Gordis

In Saving Israel, Daniel Gordis offers a new defense of the Jewish state, asking first why Israel is nec-essary, and then discussing what Israel has to do in order to survive its enemies. Mr. Gordis begins with a novel discussion of Israel’s purpose, reflect-ing on the overlooked ways in which Israel has changed the existential condition of Jews every-where. In the process, he grapples with controver-sial questions about Israel, Israeli Arabs, Muslims, and the international community that many Israelis and American Jews are loath to confront. Mr. Gordis refutes myths about Israel, such as: Jews in the US could thrive without Israel; Israeli Arabs just want equality; Palestinians simply want their own state; peace will come if Israel is willing to make appropriate territorial compromises; and fighting and winning wars is antithetical to Judaism.

sHaBBat, aPRil 13 What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne FrankBy Nathan Englander

The characters in the stories are all Jewish, and they’re all scarred in some way by the events of the 20th century, even if they didn’t live through them. The Holocaust hangs heavily over the proceedings, as do Israel’s wars with Egypt, and the casual anti-Semitism many Jewish people encounter.

(We will discuss two of the short stories, Sister Hills and Free Fruit for Young Widows)

mr. Elon gold is one of the top comedians in the country, having appeared on numerous television shows, including four recent ap-pearances on The Tonight Show with Jay leno. mr. gold’s comedy takes everyday life and turns it on its head. his point of view of the world is uniquely delivered through

absurd observations and by mocking conventions, and beneath much of the laughs, lies a sharp, acerbic social commentary. But wait, that’s not all... he’ll also regale you with his hilarious original characters and offbeat impressions...at no extra charge!
