The Oxford Update

PakistanA New HistoryIan TalbotSidestepping easy headlines to identify Pakistan’s true dangers, this volume revisits the major turning points and trends of Pakistani history over the past six decades. While Ian Talbot’s study centres on Pakistan’s many failures—the collapse of stable governance, the drop in positive political and economic development, and, most of all, the unrealised goal of a Muslim state as envisaged by the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah—this book unequivocally affirms the country’s potential for a positive reawakening. Talbot’s sensitive historical approach makes it clear that favourable opportunities still remain for Pakistan, in which the state has a chance to reclaim its priorities and institutions and re-establish political and economic sustainability.

Ian Talbot is Professor of History at Southampton University and one of Europe’s leading historians of South Asia.

Poetry of the TalibanTranslated by Mirwais Rahmany and Abdul Hamid Stanikzai

Edited by Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix KuehnThis collection of over two hundred poems by members of and adherents to the Taliban movement, draws upon Afghan tradition and the recent past as much as upon the long history of Pashto, Persian, and Urdu verse. The poems offer an unfettered insight into the wider, more human worldview of the Afghan Taliban. The contrast between the severity of their ideology and the long-standing poetic traditions of the cultures they are born into is nothing short of remarkable. Unrequited love, vengeance, the thrill of battle, religion, and nationalism are expressed through images of wine, powerful women, and pastoral beauty, providing a fascinating insight into the hearts and minds of these warriors. Taliban verse is fervent, and very modern in its criticism of human rights abuses by all parties to the conflict.

Alex Strick van Linschoten is currently working on his PhD at the War Studies Department of King’s College, London, on the identity of the Afghan Taliban movement 1978–2001.

Felix Kuehn has co-edited the book, My Life with the Taliban, and co-authored An Enemy We Created, both with Alex Strick van Linschoten.

We’ve Learnt Nothing from HistoryPakistan: Politics and Military PowerM. Asghar KhanThis book presents an insider’s view of Pakistan’s struggle for democracy from the 1960s to the present. It expounds on the early entry of Pakistan’s armed forces into the country’s politics and the author’s opposition to military rule, which began in 1968 with the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy. The author describes his continued opposition to autocratic and dictatorial rule, especially General Yahya Khan’s policy of brutal suppression through military action in East Pakistan. The author recalls Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s rise to political power during the 1970s, and General Ziaul Haq’s dogmatic and iron-fisted military rule during the 1980s. The book concludes with the author’s assessment of General Pervez Musharraf ’s years in power consequent upon the re-entry of the armed forces in the country’s politics in 1999.

M. Asghar Khan was the first Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Air Force. He formed his own political party, the Tehrik-i-Istiqlal, in 1972. He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1977.

The 1971 Indo-Pak WarA Soldier’s NarrativeMajor General Hakeem Arshad QureshiGeneral Qureshi’s book forces us to look objectively at the part of our past that we have ignored and tried to forget and I think he has done the Army and the Nation a great service by using his experience to interpret the great tragedy of 1971…. The book, in my opinion, should be compulsory reading for all students of military history.

—Gen. Jahangir Karamat, former COAS Pakistan Army

There is much in this book for the historian and the political scientist, but at a purely human level, this is a story of a typically undemonstrative officer and his love for his men.

—M.A. Niazi, The Nation

Maj.-Gen. Hakeem Arshad Qureshi served in the Pakistan Army for thirty-nine years and during that period held a number of important Staff and Command positions.

Zulfi Bhutto of Pakistan His Life and Times

Stanley WolpertZulfikar Ali Bhutto was a charismatic and contradictory man. This volume traces his life from the colourful days of his feudal ancestors to his imprisonment and hanging at the hands of a military dictator. The author weaves Pakistan’s turbulent politics and repeated wars with India together with Bhutto’s ambitious manoeuvring, tracing his rise to Foreign Minister, the founding of his own political party, and finally leadership of the nation. The story of Bhutto’s sometimes inspiring, sometimes quixotic career is a fascinating one, and the author tells it brilliantly, through Bhutto’s triumphant years in the mid-1970s, the military coup in 1977, and his treacherous imprisonment and execution in 1979. The author’s intensively researched, engagingly written account captures the scheming, the grandeur, and the contradictions of one of modern history’s most fascinating figures.

Stanley Wolpert is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

Kashmir in Comparative PerspectiveDemocracy and Violent Separatism in India

Sten WidmalmThis book investigates the factors that led to the breakdown of democracy and the rise of violent separatism in Jammu and Kashmir in the 1980s. Using unique and new empirical material, including interviews with representatives of the Government of India, the ISI in Pakistan, and separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, the author argues that the emergence of incompatible identities should be regarded as an outcome of a preceding and distinctly political conflict in Jammu and Kashmir during the 1980s. This conflict, which later escalated into a small-scale civil war, was the result of disputes between the elites in Jammu and Kashmir and the central government. Furthermore, although it is clear that Pakistan has actively supported the uprising, and that poor socio-economic conditions may have fuelled discontent in Jammu and Kashmir, the conflict cannot be explained by such factors alone.

Sten Widmalm is Assistant Professor and Director of Development Studies at the Uppsala University in Sweden.
