A Story of Days Gone ByA Translation of Biti Kahani: An Autobiography of Princess Shahr Bano Begam of PataudiTranslated, edited, and introduced by Tahera AftabPrincess Shahr Bano Begam of Pataudi wrote Biti Kahani in 1885 and it is considered one of the earliest autobiographies in Urdu literature. It is not just a personal narrative but a comprehensive documentation of the lives of Indian women during and after the tumultuous events of 1857, making it a unique contribution to ‘Mutiny’ historiography. Shahr Bano’s book deepens our understanding of many diverse facets of history that usually remain obscure in works by male historians. Shahr Bano, despite being a pardah-observing woman, bridges the ‘public’ and the ‘private’ spheres and thus presents a document of immense historical significance

Attiya Dawood Translated by Amina AzfarThis autobiography is a lucid testament of Attiya Dawood’s struggle to find her identity in a patriarchal society that has little tolerance for those who seek to escape from male domination and meet with men on their own terms. Her experience as an orphaned child, living in the close confines of a village community in the interior of Sindh, and her struggle to be independent in Hyderabad and in the metropolis of Karachi, provide her with a different worldview to those unaffected by the claustrophobic atmosphere of village life. Her writings and poetry aptly reflect her broader perspective on life as a woman.
Attiya Dawood is a celebrated Sindhi poet, writer, and activist who, through her writings, has highlighted the oppression of women in Pakistani society in the name of tradition.
Amina Azfar is a former editor of Oxford University Press Pakistan. She now works as a freelance editor and translator.

Nocturnal Music in the Land of the Sufis Unheard PakistanJürgen Wasim FrembgenIn this book, the author takes the reader along on his fascinating journeys into the world of mystic music in Pakistan. In rich descriptions, he relates his personal experiences and emotions during ecstatic nights of transcendental music at Sufi shrines. He also recounts trance rituals and the sublime rapture of classical music in private music rooms in Lahore. Jürgen Wasim Frembgen is Chief Curator of the Oriental Department at the Museum of Ethnology in Munich, as well as Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Munich.

A wide range of topics has been discussed: from the pre-Partition colonial period to post-Partition movements (religious, political, cultural etc.), peoples and places, culture, architecture, politics, military, economics, linguistics, archaeology, judiciary, art, theatre, education, foreign relations, government, media, philanthropy, and civil society. The Companion differs from other encyclopaedias in the sense that all entries have been written in an analytical, unbiased style by well-known experts in the related field of the topic, paying the keenest attention to factual details.
Dr Ayesha Jalal is Mary Richardson Professor of History at Tufts University, USA, where she teaches at the History Department and the Fletcher School.
The Punjab Bloodied, Partitioned and CleansedUnravelling the 1947 Tragedy through Secret British Reports and First-Person AccountsIshtiaq AhmedThe Partition of India in 1947 resulted in the biggest forced migration in history—some 14 million people altogether of which 10 million were from the Punjab. This book is a holistic study of the first major case of ethnic cleansing after the Second World War. Besides shedding new light on the events through secret British reports, it also contains poignant accounts by eyewitnesses, survivors, and even participators in the carnage from both sides of the border. With interviewees from both India and Pakistan, the book aims to give a balanced account of Partition and show how religious differences are no bar to peaceful coexistence unless highlighted by divisive forces.
Ishtiaq Ahmed is Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Stockholm University, Sweden, and Honorary Senior Fellow, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore.

The True Subject Selected Poems of Faiz Ahmed FaizTranslated by Naomi LazardFaiz Ahmed Faiz is considered the most important Urdu poet since Iqbal. His poetry, renowned for its lyric beauty and the warmth of its humanism, is indispensable in the world today. This was the first book of Faiz’s translations to appear in the United States. The collaboration for these translations began in 1979, when Faiz and Naomi Lazard met at a writers’ conference in Honolulu. Lazard and Faiz developed their particular method of working, which is discussed at length in the introduction ‘Translating Faiz’ in this book.
Naomi Lazard is an American poet and playwright. She is a former President of the Poetry Society of America and co-founded The Hamptons International Film Festival.
Festival!Compiled by Maniza NaqviAs an experiment, author Maniza Naqvi wrote to a number of writers, asking them for “an ember from your fire”. This could be “a line or two—a paragraph or page—a story, a poem, or a song—anything about anything”.
This volume is the resulting “feast”. It is a compilation of ideas/thoughts without any particular theme. It contains random thoughts of notable litterateurs, such as Bapsi Sidhwa, Mohsin Hamid, Tahira Naqvi, Zulfikar Ghose, Fahmida Riaz, Muneeza Shamsie, H. M. Naqvi, Kishwar Naheed, Aamer Hussein, Uzma Aslam Khan, Siddhartha Deb, Amitava Kumar, and many others. Each contribution has been arranged chronologically by Maniza Naqvi and it is left to the reader to make of each and the whole what they would
Maniza Naqvi is a novelist and short story writer. Her four novels are Mass Transit, On Air, Stay with Me, and A Matter of Detail.

Sajjad Zaheer was one of the main architects of the Progressive Movement in Literature in pre-Partition India. He authored and translated several literary works.
