“Posting” the Washington “Times” for Shavuos

Licht Bentchen: Tuesday, May 18 – 7:59 P.M. Wednesday, May 19 – after 9:08 P.M. Dear Parents, Our BIG event of the week was today’s Math Fair, the brainchild and labor of love of Mrs. Marcia Laundy. The goals were to have the kids participate in hands-on activities that:

Demonstrate how math is regularly used in the real world (wherever the real world might be).

What is unthinkable to some is true – math can be fun. As this is being written before the festivities, I will once again engage in prophetic prognostication. Hence: Everything went smoothly and well, and all involved really had “sum” time. For all the work involved, we, of course, thank Mrs. Laundy for the months she put into this program. We also express HaKaras HaTov to Mrs. Malka and our entire Secular Studies staff for their hard work and planning and to all teachers, aides, parents (Julie Vogel and Melissa Miller), and YGW students (Rivka Malka Swartz, Rena Thomas, and Naomi Wakschlag), who assisted today. For the set-up of tables in the cafeteria, Mrs.Laundy had the terrific help of the following 5Gers: Yael Fink, Tzivya Graff, Sori Leiman, Ayelet Makovoz, Sara Verschleisser, and Sara Keleman. The design for the t-shirts (which were anonymously and generously donated) is attributable to Shira Charner and her computer. G-d willing, a full detailed report will come to you next week.

The T-Shirt Design

6G Cookbooks The other BIG project which came to “fruition” this week is the publication of the Sixth Grade Girls’ first-ever cookbook. It is a delightful

collection of a wide variety of foods, with lots of Shabbos and Yom Tov specials. Aside from the girls, their families, and friends, we owe a great debt of gratitude to Mrs. Malka, Mrs. Karp, Rochel Rabinowitz and her serene, calm computer expertise, Mrs. Mailman, Mrs. Kreiser, Mrs. Abby Pines, Mrs. Marlene Teichman, Mrs. Chaya Shinensky, Miss Tova Tolchinsky, Miss Dina Teitelbaum, Miss Devorah Stimler, Miss Tzipi Feldman, and Miss Devorah Bergman. The post-publication cost is now $7.00 a copy. Buy now before further inflation hits us.

To Bowie and Back-Trip No. 14

Last night’s trip to Bowie was a huge success. Our contingent of over 60 “post – 3:30-classes’-attendees” had terrific times. Among the highlights of the evening were: • Our school was officially welcomed. • Visits to the gift shop. • Visits to the concession stands. • Catching baseballs. • Winning prizes. • Lots of loud cheering and horse voices. • Tangentially watching a baseball game won by the Erie Seavolves by a score of 5-3. For the myriad arrangements (including supper) and for a terrific evening, we thank Rabbi Hoffman, Rabbi Samberg’s Mishmar girls, Marlene Teichman, Jodi Mailman, Abby Pines, and all the following who came on our journey: Rabbi Samberg, Rabbi Hoffman, Larry Rubin, Jonathan Gold, Jeff Pines, Craig Gordon, Michael Young, Moshe Katz, Yehuda Katz, Alicia Lombardo, and Jessica Eizenstat. Todah, also to our PTA for making it all possible by sponsoring the dinner and the bus. Special compliments to all our kids for their very fine behavior.

Get to know water Diver By Yosef  Obviously, all classes are counting up to, learning

about, and looking forward to Shavuos. Various projects will likely hit your houses on Monday.

3B/3G had their earthworm sessions on Wednesday from Echoes of Nature. They saw how earthworms react to different stimuli and learned how earthworms benefit us. This is related to their unit on Soil, during whch they’ve also tested the absorption rates of dirt, sand, and gravel.

Different classes had some planting, and we’re now waiting for bumper crops of sunflower seeds (AKA Gar-ee-neem) veggies, and beans.

4B learned about looking for opportunities to create a Kiddush Hashem and the laws of Bentching with a Mezuman.

5B have discovered in Gemarrah the original sources of the three daily Tefillos – Shacharis, Minchah, and Ma’a’riv.

5G used their artistry to illustrate the poetic words of Az Yashir. They also did some interesting experimentation with bones (related to their study of the skeletal system), and they found out which liquids cause bones to rot. They are continuing their reading and analysis of The Hundred Dresses. The vital theme of this book is the importance of every individual and the tragic things that occur when people are excluded and/or put down.

Middah Alert The following were this week’s O’na’as Devarim “pointers.”

“Who removes sleep from my eyes and slumber (the state of dozing) from myeyelids....

....And may it be your will.....Who bestows beneficial kindnesses upon His nation,Israel.”

These two “sections” are actually one Berachah.  Therefore,  Amen is only said at the end of theentire paragraph ‐ after the word, Yisroel.

Part One of this blessing thanks Hashem for removing from us all forms of sleep  in order toenable us to accomplish what we need to during the day.

Part Two is a prayer that Hashem should help us achieve only good things during our wakinghours.  We ask the Ribbono Shel Olam to assist us in:

Study of Torah.Performance of Mitzvos.Avoiding all types of sins.Overcoming the Yei’tzer HaRah.Staying away from evil people.“Attaching” ourselves to the Yei’tzer HaTov.Finding favor and kindness in His eyes and the eyes of all people.

Although the choice between doing good and evil is ours, we ultimately need  Hashem’s help to carry outour wishes after we’ve made our selection.  We, therefore, pray that He will assist us in doing the goodthat we want to do.

We complete this Berachah by thanking Hashem for bestowing the “best of kindnesses” upon us.                       __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This completes Birchos HaShachar, the morning blessings.  However, before continuing to thenext segment of Shacharis, we recite a short prayer.  Its origin is a personal  Tefillah said by RabbiYehudah HaNasi (known as Rabbeinu HaKaddosh), the compiler of the Mishnah.  In these few lines, webeseech G‐d to daily save us from encounters with any “brand” of evil person or event.                                                __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

CLASSROOM CLOSEUPS by Mrs. Perel Kreiser Volume VI Issue 24

When one comes to a crossroads in life, one never knows which direction to take. In  the Sixth Grade, the  girls are about to enter their teen years‐their personal crossroads. This is a time when they are making the transition from being children to becoming young adults. Young adults start to think differently, to probe, to investigate, and to discover the world around them on a deeper level. In the Sixth Grade classroom, we are honing these abilities to think through he eyeglasses of the Torah.  Our Sixth Graders are mature young ladies who love to learn and

e study in classttruly enjoy delving deeply into all that w .     We are fortunate to have learned Parashas Yisro where the Torah is given to us, followed by all the laws written in Parashas Mishpatim. When you walk into our classroom, chances are that you will hear animated discussions about the various laws discussed in Parashas Mishpatim. What happens if you damage someone else’s property or belongings? What is your culpability if you injure another person? What is your responsibility if you are watching something for someone else and it is damaged or stolen? Ask any Sixth Grader, and she will be able to tell you all the different scenarios and what the Torah requires of us in each situation. Not only did we learn many new Halachos, we have had long and heated discussions about the whys and hows of each situation. We train our minds to think on a deeper level. We spend much time not only on what Rashi has to say, but how Rashi came to that conclusion. At the present time, we are finishing the Parashiyos that tell us about the different Keilim in the Mishkan and the Bigdei Kehuna. The girls know that, when they ask a question, they are often told, “Look in Rashi and see if you can find the answer.” It is such a thrill to them when they figure out the nswer on their own, and the ensuing discussions are always filled with wonderful insights by athe girls... and all this is only in the first hour ‐ as we learn Chumash.     After a short break, we go on to a varied curriculum.  Depending on the day, we learn either Ivrit, Aseres Hadiberos, or various Halachos, interspersed with Be’iur Tefillah and varied other topics.  Ivrit is a time which is filled with fun and challenging games which help reinforce he new words that were introduced. We are working on building up our vocabulary through iffere . td nt word lists and stories.  We follow this up with discussions in Ivrit   We are fortunate to have a very special book put out by project Taryag Mitzvos about Aseres Hadiberos. This beautifully written and illustrated book is full of Halachos, stories, and fascinating bits on information about each of the Aseres Hadiberos. The girls so enjoy reading aloud from these books and following up with discussions. We also learn many different Halachos depending on the time of year. As you can see, our morning hours are filled to the brim, using every minute to its fullest. I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to share in the growth of these delightful young ladies.

Torah thought on health and wellness:

The Rabbis give us a fascinating insight into one aspect of preparation that Moshe undertook to make himself fitting to speak with HaShem and stand on Har Sinai to receive the Torah. The gemara in Sotah (12b) tells us that after Miriam followed the infant Moshe as he floated down the river, and saw him picked out of the water by Basya, Pharaoh’s daughter, she asked if it was necessary to get a Jewish wet-nurse from whom he would feed. Why? Because Moshe, through Divine Inspiration, refused the milk from Egyptian women. The gemara teaches that it was not fitting for the same mouth that would speak with the Creator of the Universe to nurse from women who ate non-kosher food, therefore causing Moshe to taste the traife being transmitted through the milk. Even as a young infant, Moshe was preparing himself to communicate with HaShem and to be the transmitter of His Torah. However the halacha states that it is permissible for a Jewish child to nurse from a non-Jewish woman (Rama, Yoreh Deah 81:7). The non-kosher food the wet-nurse consumes does not render her milk traife. Nonetheless, the halacha says that it is certainly preferable for a Jewish child to feed from a Jewish woman who only eats kosher food. The commentators, therefore, conclude that this is the reason Moshe refused the Egyptian women. It wasn’t a kashrus issue per se, rather he was inspired to elevate himself by ensuring a higher level of sanctity when it came to the food (milk) he put in his mouth - for he would use his mouth to communicate with HaShem and teach Torah to Klal Yisroel.

CHALAV YISRAEL

This lesson is very appropriate for us as we approach Shavuos. Not only must we maintain our exemplary standards of kashrus, but we should also understand that the quality of the food we put in our mouths has a direct impact on our physical health and spiritual wellbeing. We use our mouths to learn and pray. These are sublime acts that give us the opportunity to transcend the mundane. Should the same mouth that communicates with our Father in Heaven blurt out hurtful speech or consume unhealthy foods? “Maaseh avos simon l’banim – the actions of our fathers are indicators for the children.” Shouldn’t we learn from Moshe that even if something is technically kosher, it might still not be in our best interest to eat? We can’t claim ignorance to the harmful effects many non-nutritious foods have on us. Mustn’t we do all we can to elevate our bodies to best be able to carry out the commandments HaShem has given us? Do we need Divine Inspiration to do so? Or can we simply internalize this lesson from Moshe’s youth, and use it to inform our choices regarding our eating behaviors. Good שבת.

High-sugar or carb-loaded kid staples like fruit-flavored snacks, granola bars, and white bread provide a temporary euphoric buzz, followed by an afternoon crash as your kid's blood sugar--and mood--plummet. Instead, opt for snacks with a low glycemic index, meaning they cause a smaller disturbance in blood sugar levels for no cranky withdrawal stage. Foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, and peanuts provide kids with an energy

boost while keeping sugar levels stable.

Frozen waffles, or foods containing artificial colors and preservatives, like BBQ chips or candy are highly processed. They might beg for junk food when they're cranky, but these foods will only make your kid's mood

worse.

Highly processed foods may have another adverse effect on children’s emotional wellbeing: British researchers found that artificial food colorings and preservatives in their diets caused an increase in

hyperactive behavior in 3-year-olds. (Likewise, a withdrawal of such preservatives caused a significant reduction in hyperactivity.) An

Australian study found that foods with synthetic food coloring was linked with irritability, restlessness, and sleep disturbance in children.
