SCHOOL COUNCIL MEMBERS NEEDED

The following individuals have been placed on the ballot for election to our OMS School Council. Please vote for 4 of the following:

Eligible voters (parents of Osborne students) may cast their ballots on Friday, August 31st, from 8:15 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. in the Osborne Main Office or online at this link. All candidates on the ballot will be informed of the election results on Tuesday, September 4th.

The Osborne Middle School Council will meet from 8:00 a.m. – 8:55 a.m. in the school staff development room on the following dates:

MEDIA CENTER NEWS

Everyone is invited to attend the "Vote for Bookzilla 2012" annual AJC Decatur Book Festival this Labor Day weekend. The festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and features events for children, teens, and adults. Over three hundred best-selling authors, including popular young adult writers like Kenneth Oppel, David Levithan, and Neal Shusterman, will be there to speak and to sign books. The festival includes everything from a vibrant street fair all the way to a fire-breathing monster of a presidential campaign! The keynote address this year will be given by the United States’ poet laureate for 2012-2013, Natasha Tretheway, who is from Mississippi but attended The University of Georgia. 8TH GRADE BASKETBALL NEWS

All 8th grade girls and boys interested in trying out for basketball this year should attend an informational meeting in the gym on Thursday, September 6th, at 8:15 a.m. Students will receive permission forms, physical forms, and teacher recommendation forms at this meeting. Students who are unable to attend the meeting can find important information and download the forms from Coach Rohlfs’ (boys) and Coach Wilkerson’s (girls) websites.

Basketball tryouts will be October 9th through 12th. Any student wishing to try out must have a physical with insurance information or a waiver on file with the appropriate coach. STUDENT CLUB NEWS

Intramurals

We have had a tremendous response to our intramurals program! Due to the high student turnout, we will be altering the schedule as follows:

Mondays and Tuesdays – 6th Grade students only Thursdays and Fridays – 7th and 8th Grade students only

Changing the schedule will provide a safer environment for our students while also giving them more opportunities to participate. The new schedule will start Tuesday, September 4th, which is our first day back after the Labor Day holiday.

OMS Guitar Club

Registration is open to the first 50 students who apply, regardless of prior experience. The deadline to register is Friday, September 14th. Please see the attached registration form for more information.

Club Sponsors: Kelly Taylor & Mike Sawyer

Mission: The mission of the OMS Guitar Club is to provide students with an opportunity to learn basic guitar chords and the foundations of proper performance technique. Beginners are welcome! Advanced players will have opportunities to perform for the group and share their favorite repertoire. Guitars will be available for check-out on a first-come, first-served basis. Each student will pay $20 dues to cover the cost of the club t-shirt, music, and supplies.

Description of Activities: Guitar Club is open to any OMS student who wishes to participate and no previous instrumental experience is required. Students will learn “the basics” and will take home a reference sheet for individual practice each month. We will also listen to music, watch performances by famous guitarists, and discuss the history/evolution of the guitar. This group meets monthly, and students may bring their own guitars.

NEW FORMAT! This year we will divide into two groups. Mrs. Taylor will lead a beginner’s group that covers the fundamentals of guitar. Mr. Sawyer will work with the returning guitar club members and players who have previous experience. Occasionally the two groups will come together to perform and discuss guitar-related topics.

The club will meet on the last Tuesday of each month (8:00 – 9:00am, Orchestra Room 1.808)

Open Practice dates will be scheduled on Tuesdays when we do not have a club meeting (8:00 – 9:00am, Orchestra Room 1.808).

PTA NEWS

2012-2013 PTA Reflections Program This year’s Reflections program is already underway. The theme is “The Magic of a Moment” and students may submit entries in the categories of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. Please visit the Georgia PTA Reflections website for rules for each category. All entries are due Monday, October 1st, and must be submitted with a signed entry form. This year’s form is two pages and both pages must be completed. You may download the entry form and other information from the Reflections page of the OMS website.
