Email: [email protected] STATEWIDE CLASSIFIEDS Page 9 ursday, September 12, 2019 The Osage County Herald-Chronicle | Classifieds Public Notices Continued from 8 Gary Rush | Staff Writer By the time this article goes to print I will have boots on the tundra in the Alaskan wilderness. A few months ago I promised I would tell of how I put together this do-it- yourself hunt as I go in search of the Yukon bull moose. With the outcome still in ques- tion and my qualifications to provide instruction hanging in the balance of my success and plunder, I offer the knowledge that the courage of a pioneer opens doors commonly be- lieved impossible. No matter the outcome, I will have a moose tag in my pocket for the next three weeks and virgin arctic air in my lungs. I have succeeded. Despite the hunter I believe myself to be, indulgent in the successes of arduous tasks achieved alone, I dare not take this journey by myself. My wife, Barbara, would be on this adventure with me if our combined three-week absence would not put our livelihood at home in Kansas at jeopardy, so I have enlisted my friend Benjamin Moore of Berryton to accompany me to the north. So, for the past sev- eral months we have planned our escape from Kansas and scrutinized every detail to- gether. Neither of us has ever been to Alaska, nor have we engaged in hunting moose on any level. To say “we started green” would be a grievous understatement, but I remain confident, as I have pursued other species not indigenous to Kansas in similar fashion with noteworthy success. All this began one evening several years ago when I de- cided for no apparent reason I wanted to hunt moose. With finances and time always a concern I began my search for a reasonable priced tag I could acquire the instant time became available. One option was Maine, but a drawing awards a tag for this hunt and I require the ability to purchase my tags immediately rather than wait several years to build up enough points to maybe make a successful draw. The remainder of the lower forty eight states either had near impossible draws for once in a lifetime tags or a price equivalent to a gener- ous down payment on a new home. Alaska was always my first and last option. Not only did their moose hunting meet all my requirements, I simply desired the chance to trek into the United States’ last frontier. Knowing pictures and per- sonal accounts pale to actual experience I just had to see it for myself. My initial concern was trav- el. I considered driving, but time and the void on the map known as “Canada” swayed me from such an idea. Air flight was my obvious choice with vehicle rental once on the ground necessary to transport me to the edge of hunting grounds and back again. Many do it yourself hunters are dependant on assistance from satellite imagery to survey their proposed hunting grounds, which can be quite handy at times, but I must be of an older school. I prefer topographical maps from the Bureau of Land Management. Some topo maps display veg- etation tendencies, with green for forested land and white for grasslands, and I find this advent extremely helpful in navigation. With enough study one can combine vegetation, waterways and elevation in a fashion to make fairly ac- curate assumptions of game animal patterns from one area to the next. Once you mas- ter this, hunting new lands becomes much easier. My next undertaking was to study the animal. Moose, aside from being huge and a bit more vocal, are not vastly unlike the whitetail deer of Osage County. The bulls move as bachelors looking for the most profitable browse and rut with reckless abandon in defense of territory and mat- ing rites. They do not hold ha- rems like elk and service the cows on an opportunity basis. Knowing these tendencies and understanding their preferred habitat should vastly improve our chances for success. Lastly, my most tortu- ous concern is what to do when we actually do get a bull moose on the ground. Alaska law provides that all edible parts of the animal be removed from the field im- mediately upon harvest. I do not imagine I will be shooting my bull, with either rifle or bow, less than a mile from the nearest road. As I mentioned before, bull moose are huge and delivering all edible meat, horn and hide to civilization with only the strength of my hunting partner’s back will be a gruesome task. To lighten the burden, I promised to help a bit and we are enlisting the aid of a pack raft I have been putting together from scratch over the past month. It is an inflatable raft to be carried in the backpack sporting a weight of less than six pounds and a capacity of 450 pounds. As moose are commonly found near water, and rivers find abundance in the Alaskan landscape, the most difficult portion of recovery will be transporting meat from kill sight to river. Once we have the animal at water’s edge a couple trips by pack raft to road with nominal loads of meat should suffice. My efforts to simplify the task of recovery are only to placate the dread brought about by the common unseen variables, which always exist only to crush the perfect plan. Whatever trivialities arise, however, Ben and I will adjust, persevere and do whatever it takes to make this Alaskan adventure one of the greatest of our lives. Moose for less

By the time this article goes to print I will have boots on the tundra in the Alaskan wilderness. A few months ago I promised I would tell of how I put together this do-it-yourself hunt as I go in search of the Yukon bull moose. With the outcome still in ques-tion and my qualifications to provide instruction hanging in the balance of my success and plunder, I offer the knowledge that the courage of a pioneer opens doors commonly be-lieved impossible.

So, for the past sev-eral months we have planned our escape from Kansas and scrutinized every detail to-gether. Neither of us has ever been to Alaska, nor have we engaged in hunting moose on any level. To say “we started green” would be a grievous understatement, but I remain

confident, as I have pursued other species not indigenous to Kansas in similar fashion with noteworthy success.

All this began one evening several years ago when I de-cided for no apparent reason I wanted to hunt moose. With finances and time always a concern I began my search for a reasonable priced tag I could acquire the instant time became available. One option was Maine, but a drawing awards a tag for this hunt and I require the ability to purchase my tags immediately rather than wait several years to build up enough points to maybe make a successful draw. The remainder of the lower forty eight states either had near impossible draws for once in a lifetime tags or a price equivalent to a gener-ous down payment on a new home.

Alaska was always my first and last option. Not only did their moose hunting meet all my requirements, I simply desired the chance to trek into the United States’ last frontier. Knowing pictures and per-sonal accounts pale to actual experience I just had to see it for myself.

My initial concern was trav-el. I considered driving, but time and the void on the map known as “Canada” swayed me from such an idea. Air flight was my obvious choice with vehicle rental once on the ground necessary to transport me to the edge of hunting

grounds and back again. Many do it yourself hunters

are dependant on assistance from satellite imagery to survey their proposed hunting grounds, which can be quite handy at times, but I must be of an older school. I prefer topographical maps from the Bureau of Land Management. Some topo maps display veg-etation tendencies, with green for forested land and white for grasslands, and I find this advent extremely helpful in navigation. With enough study one can combine vegetation, waterways and elevation in a fashion to make fairly ac-curate assumptions of game animal patterns from one area to the next. Once you mas-ter this, hunting new lands becomes much easier.

My next undertaking was to study the animal. Moose, aside from being huge and a bit more vocal, are not vastly unlike the whitetail deer of Osage County. The bulls move as bachelors looking for the most profitable browse and rut with reckless abandon in defense of territory and mat-ing rites. They do not hold ha-rems like elk and service the cows on an opportunity basis. Knowing these tendencies and understanding their preferred habitat should vastly improve our chances for success.

Lastly, my most tortu-ous concern is what to do when we actually do get a bull moose on the ground. Alaska law provides that all

edible parts of the animal be removed from the field im-mediately upon harvest.
