Preservice Anthem “A Great Day in Gloryland” Parish Choir * Processional Hymn " We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God”
(For those who are able, please stand for the portions of the service that are marked with an *)
1 We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord,
The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored.
To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing,
The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring:
“O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;
Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!”
2 The band of the apostles in glory sing Your praise;
The fellowship of prophets their deathless voices raise.
The martyrs of Your kingdom, a great and noble throng,
Sing with the holy Church throughout all the world this song:
“O all-majestic Father, Your true and only Son,
And Holy Spirit, Comforter—forever Three in One!”
3 You, Christ, are King of glory, the everlasting Son,
Yet You, with boundless love, sought to rescue ev’ryone:
You laid aside Your glory, were born of virgin’s womb,
Were crucified for us and were placed into a tomb;
Then by Your resurrection You won for us reprieve—
You opened heaven’s kingdom to all who would believe.
(Con’t…)
2
4 You sit in splendid glory, enthroned at God’s right hand,
Upholding earth and heaven by forces You command.
We know that You will come as our Judge that final day,
So help Your servants You have redeemed by blood, we pray;
May we with saints be numbered where praises never end,
In glory everlasting. Amen, O Lord, amen!
* Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto
God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. * Confession and Absolution
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with
which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal
punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and
I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent,
bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious
and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant
of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the
command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the
Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

* Introit (sung responsively) Psalm 8: 1-9
1O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in | all the earth!*
You have set your glory above the | heavens. 2Out of the mouth of babes and infants, you have established strength because | of your
foes,*
to still the enemy and the a- | venger. 3When I look at your heavens, the work of your | fingers,*
the moon and the stars, which you have | set in place, 4what is man that you are mind- | ful of him,*
and the son of man that you | care for him? 5Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly | beings*
and crowned him with glory and | honor. 6You have given him dominion over the works | of your hands;*
you have put all things under | his feet, 7all sheep and | oxen,*
and also the beasts | of the field, 8the birds of the heavens, and the fish | of the sea,*
whatever passes along the paths | of the seas. 9O | LORD, our Lord,*
how majestic is your name in | all the earth!
Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.
* Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. O Lord, the God of all Grace, You have called Your Church to minister
in the name of Your Son, our great High Priest. By Your Word and Spirit inspire men
to offer their lives for the sacred ministry that, ministering in the name of Christ, they
may draw many to Your kingdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

First Reading John 20:19-23 19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the
disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,
“Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then
the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with
you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when he had said this, he
breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of
anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”
P This is the word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:1-5
1I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the
dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2preach the word; be ready in season and out of
season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3For the time is
coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will
accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4and will turn away from
listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5As for you, always be sober-minded, endure
suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
P This is the word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Choir Anthem “Lead Me, Lord” Parish Choir
* Holy Gospel Matthew 5:13-16
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth Chapter.
C Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
13[Jesus said:] “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness
be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under
people’s feet. 14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do
people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the
house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good
works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

* Sermon Hymn “The Son of God Goes Forth to War” Hymnal page 661
1 The Son of God goes forth to war
A kingly crown to gain.
His blood-red banner streams afar;
Who follows in His train?
Who best can drink His cup of woe,
Triumphant over pain,
Who patient bears his cross below—
He follows in His train.
2 The martyr first, whose eagle eye
Could pierce beyond the grave,
Who saw his master in the sky
And called on Him to save.
Like Him, with pardon on His tongue
In midst of mortal pain,
He prayed for those who did the wrong—
Who follows in his train?
3 A glorious band, the chosen few,
On whom the Spirit came,
Twelve valiant saints—their hope they knew
And mocked the cross and flame.
They met the tyrant’s brandished steel,
The lion’s gory mane;
They bowed their necks their death to feel—
Who follows in their train?
4 A noble army, men and boys,
The matron and the maid,
Around the Savior’s throne rejoice,
In robes of light arrayed.
They climbed the steep ascent of heav’n
Through peril, toil, and pain.
O God, to us may grace be giv’n
To follow in their train!

Address to the Candidate
P Dear brother in Christ, the Lord grant that you receive and keep these words in your heart so
that you may be strengthened and encouraged in your labors.
God gathers His Church by and around His Holy Gospel and thereby also grants it growth
and increase according to His good pleasure. That this may be done, He has established the
Office of the Holy Ministry into which you have been called by the Church and are now to be
ordained and consecrated by prayer and the laying on of hands.
In the presence of this congregation and before our Lord God to whom you must give an
account now and at the Last Day, I now ask you: Do you acknowledge that the Lord has
called you through His Church into the ministry of Word and Sacrament?
R I do.
P Do you believe and confess the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments to be the
inspired Word of God and the only infallible rule of faith and practice?
R Yes, I believe and confess the canonical Scriptures to be the inspired Word of God and the
only infallible rule of faith and practice.
8
P Do you believe and confess the three Ecumenical Creeds, namely the Apostles’, the
Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds, as faithful testimonies to the truth of the Holy
Scriptures, and do you reject all the errors which they condemn?
R Yes, I believe and confess the three Ecumenical Creeds because they are in accord
with the Word of God. I also reject all the errors they condemn. P Do you confess the Unaltered Augsburg Confession to be a true exposition of Holy
Scripture and a correct exhibition of the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church? And do you confess that the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the
Small and Large Catechisms of Martin Luther, the Smalcald articles, the Treatise on
the Power and Primacy of the Pope, and the Formula of Concord – as these are
contained in the Book of Concord – are also in agreement with this one scriptural
faith?
R Yes, I make these Confessions my own because they are in accord with the Word of
God.
P Do you promise that you will perform the duties of your office in accordance with
these Confessions, and that all your preaching and teaching and your administration
of the Sacraments will be in conformity with Holy Scripture and with these
Confessions?
R Yes, I promise, with the help of God.
P Will you faithfully instruct both young and old in the chief articles of Christian
doctrine, will you forgive the sins of those who repent, and will you promise never to
divulge the sins confessed to you? Will you minister faithfully to the sick and dying,
and will you demonstrate to the Church a constant and ready ministry centered in the
Gospel? Will you admonish and encourage the people to a lively confidence in Christ
and in holy living?
R Yes, I will, with the help of God. P Finally, will you honor and adorn the Office of the Holy Ministry with a holy life?
Will you be diligent in the study of Holy Scripture and the Confessions? And will
you be constant in prayer for those under your pastoral care?
R I will, the Lord helping me through the power and grace of His Holy Spirit.
The Candidate kneels.
9
The Ordination P [Jesus said:] “Peace be to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And
when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy
Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of
any, they are retained.”
P Theodore Austin Hoham, I ordain and consecrate you to the Office of the Holy
Ministry of the Word and Sacraments in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic
Church, in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen
P The Lord Jesus pour out on you His Holy Spirit for this office and work that you may
faithfully preach the Gospel and administer the Sacraments. Amen.
The assisting pastors each in turn lay both their hands directly on the newly ordained, adding an
appropriate blessing or passage from the Word of God. Then all pastors jointly lay hands on the newly
ordained while the congregation prays the Lord’s Prayer.
C Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord, Holy Scripture says, “Obey your leaders and submit to their
authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them
so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to
you.” Hebrews 13:17
Will you, the faithful, according to the Church’s public confession, and speaking for
the whole Church, receive Reverend Hoham as a servant of Christ and minister of
Word and Sacrament? If so, then answer: We will.
C We Will.
10
+ Installation as a Military Chaplain +
The presiding minister addresses the congregation:
P Beloved in the Lord, Theodore Austin Hoham has been called by the Ministry to the
Armed Forces of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to serve as chaplain in the
United States Army.
I ask you now, in the presence of God: Will you support him by your gifts and
fervent prayer? If so, then answer: We will, with the help of God. C We will, with the help of God.
P The almighty and most merciful God strengthen and assist you always.
The presiding minister asks the chaplain being installed;
P are you ready and willing to assume this public trust and responsibility?
R I am.
The newly ordained minister kneels.
Installation
P Theodore Austin Hoham, I install you as chaplain in the United States Army, in the
name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the
great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with
everything good that you may do His will, working in you that which is pleasing in
His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
C Amen.
P Let us pray. P O Lord God of hosts, we thank You for calling Your servant Theodore for ministry in
Your name to the armed forces of our nation. Grant him grace and zeal that he may
faithfully perform the work of an evangelist and pastor and set an example for all in
speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity. Stretch forth Your almighty arm to
protect those who serve in the armed forces. Give them courage and loyalty, and keep
them from temptation and harm; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives
and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.
11
If he has been kneeling, the newly ordained stands. The presiding minister dismisses and blesses
him with the following:
P Go, therefore, and be a shepherd of the Good Shepherd’s flock. Preach the Word of
God; administer the holy Sacraments; offer prayer for all the faithful; instruct, watch
over, and guide the flock among which the Holy Spirit has placed you. Do it not for
earthly gain but with great joy, for you have been called not to lordship but to serve
His flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory
that will never face away.
The almighty and most merciful God, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless
and preserve you.
C Amen.

+ Sacrament of Holy Baptism +
* Baptism Hymn “Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart”
1 Lord, Thee I love with all my heart;
I pray Thee, ne’er from me depart,
With tender mercy cheer me.
Earth has no pleasure I would share.
Yea, heav’n itself were void and bare
If Thou, Lord, wert not near me.
And should my heart for sorrow break,
My trust in Thee can nothing shake.
Thou art the portion I have sought;
Thy precious blood my soul has bought.
Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord,
Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word.
2 Yea, Lord, ’twas Thy rich bounty gave
My body, soul, and all I have
In this poor life of labor.
Lord, grant that I in ev’ry place
May glorify Thy lavish grace
And help and serve my neighbor.
Let no false doctrine me beguile;
Let Satan not my soul defile.
Give strength and patience unto me
To bear my cross and follow Thee.
Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord,
In death Thy comfort still afford.
3 Lord, let at last Thine angels come,
To Abr’ham’s bosom bear me home,
That I may die unfearing;
And in its narrow chamber keep
My body safe in peaceful sleep
Until Thy reappearing.
And then from death awaken me,
That these mine eyes with joy may see,
O Son of God, Thy glorious face,
My Savior and my fount of grace.
Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend,
And I will praise Thee without end.
13
P Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit." In the last chapter of Mark our Lord promises, "Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved." And the apostle Peter has written, "Baptism now saves you."
The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are
under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own.
Therefore, depart, you unclean spirit, and make room for the Holy Spirit in the name
of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
P Let us pray.
O almighty and eternal God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray on behalf of
Your servant Thomas, who asks for the gift of Your Baptism and desires Your
eternal grace through spiritual rebirth. Receive him, Lord, according to Your
promise: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it
will be opened to you.” Now give Your blessing to him who asks and open the door
to him who knocks, so that he may obtain the eternal blessing of this heavenly bath
and receive the promised kingdom that You give; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen. The pastor makes the sign of the holy cross upon the forehead and heart of the candidate while saying:
P Thomas Dunker Hoham, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your T
forehead and upon your T heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the
crucified. P Let us pray.
Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the
unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You
preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all. You drowned hard-
hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through
the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism.
Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You
sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away
of sin.
14
We pray that You would behold Thomas according to Your boundless mercy and
bless him with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in
him, which has been inherited from Adam and which he himself has committed
since, would be drowned and die. Grant that he be kept safe and secure in the holy
ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and
serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with
all believers in Your promise, he would be declared worthy of eternal life; through
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
Enrollment of Sponsors
P From ancient times the Church has observed the custom of appointing sponsors for
baptismal candidates and catechumens. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church
sponsors are to confess the faith expressed in the Apostles' Creed and taught in the
Small Catechism. They are, whenever possible, to witness the Baptism of those
they sponsor. They are to pray for them, support them in their ongoing instruction
and nurture in the Christian faith, and encourage them toward the faithful reception
of the Lord's Supper. They are at all times to be examples to them of the holy life of
faith in Christ and love for the neighbor.
The pastor addresses the sponsors.
P Is it your intention to serve Thomas as sponsors in the Christian faith?
R Yes, with the help of God.
P God enable you both to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with His
grace fulfill what we are unable to do.
C Amen.
The pastor addresses the candidate and asks the following questions:
P Thomas Dunker Hoham, do you renounce the devil?
R Yes, I renounce him. P Do you renounce all his works? R Yes, I renounce them. P Do you renounce all his ways? R Yes, I renounce them.
P Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth? R Yes, I believe.
15
P Let us confess our common faith in the words of the Apostle’s Creed.
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints.
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.
P Thomas Dunker Hoham, do you desire to be baptized? R Yes, I do.
The pastor pours water three times on the head of the candidate while saying:
P Thomas Dunker Hoham, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen. The pastor places his hands on the head of the newly baptized while saying:
P The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new
birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you
with His grace to life T everlasting.
C Amen.
16
The pastor presents a white garment to the newly baptized while saying:
P Receive this white garment to show that you have been clothed with the robe of
Christ's righteousness that covers all your sin. So shall you stand without fear
before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the inheritance prepared for you before
the foundation of the world.
The pastor presents a baptismal candle from the paschal candle to the newly baptized while saying:
P Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of
the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming,
that you may meet Him with joy and enter with him into the marriage feast of the
Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end.
The newly baptized is welcomed with the following:
P In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian
and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus' name as our brother in Christ, that
together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him
who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.
C Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord.
P Let us pray.
Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You
graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Thomas Dunker
Hoham the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of Your Son, our
Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You
that, as he has now become Your child, You would keep him in his baptismal grace,
that according to Your good pleasure he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to
the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the
promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
17
P Heavenly Father, You sent Your own Son into this world as the child of the virgin
Mary. We thank You for the life of this child entrusted to our care. Help us
remember that we are all Your children and so love and nurture him that he may
attain to the full stature intended for him in Your eternal kingdom, for the sake of
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
P Peace T be with you. C Amen.
* Salutation and Benedicamus
P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit.
P Bless we the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
* Benediction
P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace.
C Amen.
* Recessional Hymn “Sing Praise to the God of Israel” Hymnal page 936
1 Sing praise to the God of Israel!
Sing praise for His visitation!
Redeeming His people from their sin,
Accomplishing their salvation,
Upraising a mighty horn within
The house of His servant David!
2 God spoke by the prophets long ago,
His promise on oath recalling—
To Abraham made in former years:
Of vanquishing foes appalling,
That those He delivered from their fears
Might gladly and truly serve Him.
3 You, child, will go on before the Lord
As prophet, His way preparing;
To speak on behalf of God Most High,
His counsel of truth declaring:
Rich mercy and grace for all whereby
Iniquity is forgiven.
4 O bright, rising Sun, now shine on us
In need of illumination;
Come scatter the shades of sin and death
And shatter their domination.
Be guiding our footsteps on the path
Of peace, in Your presence dawning!
