This list replaces & supersedes all previous lists. All orders are filled in the order in which they are received and are subject to prior sale.

Prices are listed in US Dollars

OF SPECIAL NOTE: We will not be bringing everything on this list so a Pre-Order will reserve the plant – in addition, we often

bring some first bloom One-of-a-Kind seedlings grown from flasks purchased from select cutting-edge breeding programs in Taiwan. At various times during the year, this will also include plants of Phal. bellina, Phal. violacea and hybrids with their

breeding background. These will be available on a First Come-First Serve basis – all will be One-of-a-Kind plants, not mericlones.

We’ve also expanded our collection of miniature Chinese Cymbidiums, miniature Vandaceous and miniature

Dendrobiums – all of which grow & flower happily with our Phals. These are now listed these in their own sections.

Most plants are in 2.7” pots as first or second bloomers unless otherwise noted as being fully mature in 4” pots

Stock quantities of 6 or fewer are noted under size in parens ( )

ORDERING INFORMATION FOR OUR MAIL ORDER CLIENTS: In the winter or during inclement weather, shipments may be delayed pending more moderate weather conditions. Shipping is either

Phal. cornu-cervi fma. chattaladae

(the true chattaladae !)

(Rare color form of Species – Sib cross from Dr. David Grove made from the original species)

This is the genuine chattaladae form of

Phal. cornu-cervi from David Grove, owner of the only known plant of this

variety. NOTE: There are other red

forms of Phal. cornu-cervi being offered – but they are actually fma. rubescens or a

cross between fma. rubescens and possibly fma. chattaladae….all showing a hint of yellow in their lateral sepals and most with a yellow back to the flowers. Fma. chattaladae has a totally solid red back to its flowers with no hint of yellow

anywhere except the very tips of the lateral sepals & it retains its solid red

color, even on the fading flowers, whereas fma. rubescens will begin to

show yellow as the flowers fade.

Phal. deliciosa subsp. hookeriana

Charming rare color form of this micro-

branching spikes, often pendulous, over equally compact leaves. The perfect little species, easily tucked into any collection

Phal. hieroglyphica fma. alba

(RARE Color Form of Species:

‘Golden Promise’ AM/AOS x self)

The rare alba form of Phal. hieroglyphica which we find much more charming than the common white & burgundy form. For an alba form these have been extremely

vigorous growers & a few from this group have flowered already. Always leave the

previously flowered spike on the plant since they do tend to add additional buds

while making a new spike or two.

Phal. javanica

(Species)

Not often available, this strain is the result of a sibbing of two select forms.

Very compact pendulous spikes produce small flowers cascading over or between

compact round leaves. Again, we’ve found this species does better in our

greenhouses when grown a little cooler & shadier.

The result of sibbing two select clones of this rarely available species, its

Similar in its bold marks to Phal. mariae, but producing slightly flatter flowers with

crisp & dramatic deep red barring on a pure white waxy flower – all on a very

find. Will re-flower from old spikes in addition to producing new.

Phal. mariae

(Rarely Available Species)

This species has all but disappeared in cultivation. Unfortunately, many plants

found their way into this country mislabeled as Phal. mariae when they

were actually Phal. bastianii. Phal. mariae is easily recognized by its gently cascading flower spikes, a slightly more cupped flower and bold blotching on its

creamy-white background. We’ve already flowered a few from this population last

July & it is the TRUE Phal. mariae. Will

re-flower from old spikes in addition to producing new.

MULTIFLORAL MINIATURES & COMPACT-GROWING BRIGHTLY COLORED NOVELTIES:

Again, most of these clones are the result of the excellent Taiwanese breeding programs.

Many of the plants below were hand-picked from select nurseries over the last several years on our annual trips to Taiwan.

PLEASE NOTE: With many of the harlequins & the red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various times

of the year will cause some variation to occur in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer

Page 5: the orchidPhile - Cape & Islands Orchid Societycaios.org/images/orchidPhile_PRE-ORDER_LIST... · pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid red flowers

temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background will flower showing more of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to winter months, the red

pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid red flowers.

Phal. (Acker’s Sweetie x amabilis)

’Sweetheart’ We saw this multi-floral mini at last year’s Taiwan Show and simply had to add them

to our stock ! The pod parent, Acker’s Sweetie, is a delightfully spotted

beautifully round flower, but we found the spike and plant habit just too large.

However, by crossing it to Phal. amabilis, the plant and flower size has been

reduced to a more compact display and footprint – very much like having a

miniature form of the great Phal. Acker’s Sweetie. The best of both worlds !

Phal. (Brother Sara Gold x Haur Jin Diamond) ‘OX1608’

An exciting new direction in breeding,

this hybrid carries the bright yellow background from both parents ! Its

central splash pattern is the result of the dusted red overlay from Brother Sara

Gold combined with the harlequin influence of Haur Jin Diamond to create a sunburst-type accent. Heavy substance from both parents adds to a great long-lasting display. And even when all the

flowers have opened, it tends to continue to add buds to the spike !

(Golden Peoker x Judy Valentine)

One of the best harlequins we’ve seen at the Taiwan show, this remake of Chian

Xen Diamond was produced with superior parents to give stable harlequin patterning from one flower to the next!

When fully mature, its good flower count is provided by the July Valentine parent,

with the flowers carrying the heavier substance of Golden Peoker. Gracefully

cascading spikes with the flowers in perfect presentation, neither too crowded nor too spaced along the inflorescence.

A really unique clone of this candy-striped multi-floral miniature – just awarded at the Taiwan International Orchid Show bearing 44 brilliantly colored flowers on two branched

inflorescences ! Although the sepals bear red candy-stripes over the yellow

background, the petals are almost solid red-orange – with all segments showing a beautiful narrow yellow picotee – and the lateral sepals show distinct red striping over the yellow background creating a

dramatic contrast with the petals. Long-lasting heavy substance flowers on very

compact spikes which tend to continue to produce buds, even after all the flowers

An especially charming clone of this

multi-floral miniature ! Unlike the other commonly available clones of this same

hybrid, this particular clone produces extremely round well-balanced flowers on

very compact branching spikes – its striping and red lip are also much more vivid and well-defined than its siblings – its presentation beautifully set off by a central white flush and its flower size

takes after the multi-mini parent. These heavy substance flowers lead us to

wonder if they’re 4N – and its heavier substance means a long-lasting display.

A very special multi-floral mini that we saw at Liu’s Nursery in 2013 ~ and which we’ve been anxiously awaiting since then ! These are poly-props, not mericlones,

produced this way so that the results would be true to the parent plant ~ which

also means a very limited supply. Beautiful white flowers with a soft kiss of

pink around its segments & charming lightly ruffled semi-peloric petals. The

spike habit takes after the Phal. pulcherrima parent, being upright, but is much more compact than pulcherrima in height and the flower size is intermediate between pulcherrima & Otohime. Unique & very different from any Phal. available

“big lip” clones we’ve seen that are showing a severely cupped lip…this one gives the appearance of three petals on a

nice flat flower.

FRAGRANT MINIATURE CHINESE CYMBIDIUMS:

All the species listed below grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & WARMER temperature

conditions since they are miniature growing Chinese species, requiring much lower light, less space & will grow under warmer temperatures than their larger cousins ~ they also don’t require the extreme chill of standard Cymbidiums in order to make their flower spikes and all tend to flower more than once a year, having no definite flowering season. Two of our clones in particular are just 6” in height – perfect for windowsill & under-lights growing !

As you will notice, we are particularly fond of the green & yellow flowering varieties with either delightfully compact or elegantly tall flower spikes. We’ve found that the traditional pale pink-burgundy colored flowers are just too muddy to stand out and make a statement.

Several of these varieties also have the added charm of VARIEGATED FOLIAGE, meaning they’re attractive, even when not in flower ! Variegated foliage comes at a higher price because it’s greatly prized in Japanese & Chinese cultures, meaning the stronger the variegation, the more expensive the clone.

Cymbidium goeringii ’Tian Cao’

(FRAGRANT VARIEGATED Miniature

Chinese Species)

A particular favorite of ours for its rich green flowers touched with a white lip ~ it’s also the smallest grower from among

all our Chinese Cymbidiums ! Its beautiful foliage is lightly variegated just

along the edges. The flowers are produced near the base of the foliage, usually one per inflorescence, the total height of the plant being just 6” – but

what a flower for such a small wonder !

MINIATURE VANDACEOUS:

All these species & hybrids grow & flower easily WITH our Phals under the same light & temperature conditions since they are miniature growers, requiring much lower light than their larger-flowered cousins. Their plant forms are micro-miniature to compact growing, many of them readily forming basal keikis to become beautiful specimen plants producing multitudes of spikes. And most of them are also delightfully FRAGRANT !

Phrag. Hanne Popow

(schlimii x besseae)

One of the most adorable of miniature Phrag hybrids & a particular favorite of ours, this population of Hanne Popow

has proven to be a vigorous grower ! We love its smaller growth habit & perky little flowers, some of which have flowered in

two-tones with others bearing a small central blush. An easy grower, it thrives

right alongside our Phals !

striped flowers on compact plants ! Further adding to its charm are its

Polystachya paniculata

(Species)

Endemic to African rainforests, this compact grower literally explodes with hundreds of small ¼” brilliant orange-

yellow flowers on 8” vigorously branching spikes ! We had it flower in

the spring, summer and often again in the fall. Easily grown and flowered under

Phalaenopsis light conditions, it is temperature tolerant and will grow equally as well under intermediate

temperatures. Prefers a fine fir bark mix or New Zealand moss for its fine root

system and being only slightly drier in the winter months. For an outrageous

and brilliant display, this is definitely one of the easiest & most rewarding orchids

to grow and flower !

Pot. Young-Min Orange

’Golden Satisfaction’ AM/AOS

(Viola Nuggett x Lc. Trick or Treat)

This spectacular clone of Pot. Young-Min Orange knocked all the AOS judges out with its amazingly floriferous display at the Taiwan International Orchid Show in 2010 & again this year. It was awarded in

2010 with over 150 flowers and buds borne on 20 inflorescences, a display of vivid fiery orange, capable of producing 7+ flowers per spike when fully mature.

This year, when exhibited again in Taiwan at the show, it had virtually doubled in

size ! These vigorous plants can flower twice a year with long-lasting lightly

FRAGRANT flowers, their orange

intensifying as the flower matures. Grows & flowers happily under

Psychopsis papilio fma. alba

(RARE COLOR FORM of Species)

The more rare pure yellow color form of this popular “butterfly” orchid producing

elegantly tall spikes over extremely compact upright pseudobulbs & leaves,

each spike which can continue to produce flowers – one at a time – for five or more years. Very often we have found

these spikes will branch, adding even more charm to its display.

We have exhibited some of our fully mature plants of this species carrying

upwards of 25 flowering spikes emerging from over 25 pseudobulbs, the plant itself

still growing in 3 ½” - 4” pots !

Capable of producing up to three 2 ½” plus flowers per inflorescence, this is an

easy grower flowering readily under Phalaenopsis conditions. Unfortunately,

this hybrid has not been remade so divisions & mericlones are the only forms

of it currently available. One of our all-time favorites for its wonderfully compact

growth & adorable uniquely colored flowers !

Zygo. Advance Australia

’HOF’ AM/AOS

(Titanic x Helen-Ku)

We received an AM/AOS on this clone a couple of years ago & still feel it’s the

best FRAGRANT Zygo around – a very

easy and extremely compact grower, quite unlike most Zygopetalums available

today which tend to really spread out & take over your growing space ! The waxy green sepals & petals are almost totally covered with chocolate brown blotches, and its broad lip is heavily overlaid with vivid purple right out to the narrow white picotee, a vast improvement over other Zygopetalum hybrids. These are first

bloomers & will produce 3-4 flowers on their first spikes. As the plant matures, expect to see up to two spikes per each

new growth and flowering more than once a year ~ multiple newly emerging

growths only add to its delightfully fragrant bouquet ! A vigorous grower for

this kind of breeding, it thrives when grown in New Zealand moss. Its heavy chocolate barring only varies with the

light and temperature conditions (cooler & brighter versus warmer & shadier)

when the spikes are forming. The absolute best of all Zygos. for its solid

purple lip, rich rich color, full flat segments & great compact growth habit !

combined the best qualities of both parents ! Leopard Prince gives it the

wonderful spotting pattern around the column & lateral sepals while I-Hsin

Golden Sun Bird brings in the influence of harlequin heritage & yellow breeding.

The result is a whisper of deeper red striping, large flowers with heavy

substance & a dark red lip. One of the largest “red” hybrids available today !

wonderfully round flowers, with the heavy dark burgundy harlequin blotch

pronounced with just a dusting of soft pink around all its segments. Compact

leaf span and spikes and tends to flower more than once a year !

Phal. Liu’s Fantasy ‘Tom Ann’

Our best clone of this miniature, showing a great mix of both famous parents !

yellow in the callus, quite different from the traditionally available clones of this

little hybrid which bear yellow lips – compact grower with nice round thick

leaves ~ we strongly suspect this particular clone is a tetraploid (4N). Easy

to fit into any collection, this is an adorably petite & pristine white charmer !

height – ideal for windowsill & under-lights growing as well as space-
