The second phase of the Priority SchoolBuilding Programme (PSBP2) presentsa major opportunity for offsite
construction to play a crucial role to helpmeet the challenging targets. One of the mostfrequently cited benefits of offsite construc-tion is speed of delivery, with the timerequired to construct and commission anoffsite building being typically reduced by50 – 60 per cent in cases where large elementscan be prefabricated. Our robust High BayWalling systems can be used internally toprovide single span stud walls up to 10m highproviding an ideal solution for projects suchas school sports halls and auditoriums.
I see volumetric modular systems playingan even greater role in PSBP2, this phaserepresents one of the biggest opportunities formodular construction in the market. Thecombination of accelerated handover timescombined with reducing repair and mainte-
nance costs throughout the lifecycle of thebuilding, are two major financial advantagesto offsite construction which are particularlyimportant to the education sector.
Our approach to design and valueengineering is inclusive - working side-by-sidewith our clients and their designers to create a complete solution incorporatingdesign with structural calculations. Steeloffers architects’ greater versatility than otherbuilding solutions, particularly in terms ofcost. Productivity advances have beenachieved throughout the steel supply-chain
and such cost saving benefits can be sharedwith contractors.
The manufacture of steel in factorycontrolled conditions enhances buildprogrammes and eradicates the risk of onsitevariability. As an advanced high performanceoffsite solution, steel is not susceptible toshrinkage, warping, cracking, rot infestationor moisture absorption. Steel is a robust, rigidand dimensionally stable material that doesnot suffer from movement created bymoisture related issues and is perfectlypositioned to meet demands of the PrioritySchool Building Programme – it is futureproof and future ready.

The Optimum Education SolutionLight steel framing is used in offsite construction for a wide range of building types and can be developed in the form of panelised orvolumetric modular systems. Steve Thompson, MD of EOS Facades – specialists in the design, manufacture and supply of a wide range ofsteel section solutions - shares his views on why offsite manufacture is vital to the education sector
