This will be the first time in over a decade that the Char- gers faced a Big Ten team in an exhibition. The Spartans return four of their top five scor- ers from last season in redshirt-junior Shay Colley (12.4 ppg), junior Taryn McCutcheon (10.2 ppg), se- nior Jenna Allen (9.9 ppg) and sophomore Sidney Cooks (9.5 ppg). MSU does say goodbye to All- Conference honorees Branndais Agee and Taya Reimer who are both playing overseas. Michigan State finished last season 19-14 overall and 7-9 in the Big Ten, advancing to the third round of the WNIT. • The Spartans return four of their top five scor- ers from last season in redshirt-junior Shay Colley (12.4 ppg), junior Taryn McCutcheon (10.2 ppg), senior Jenna Allen (9.9 ppg) and sophomore Sidney Cooks (9.5 ppg). THE SCHEDULEForthefirsttimesincethe2015-16season,theBigTen will have an 18-game schedule after two sea-sons of a 16-game docket. The conference played an 18-game league schedule in both 2015-16 and 2014-15. It is the sixth time in the last 12 years the conference has played an 18-game schedule.

The Spartans will spend the Thanksgiving holiday in Mexico at the Cancun Challenge, November 22-23. Michigan State will take on N.C. State on Thurs-day Nov. 22, before facing Kennesaw State on Fri-day, Nov. 23. The Spartans will close out the month of November hosting Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

During the 2018-19 season at least 12 Michigan State women’s basketball games will be televised on either the ESPN2 or the Big Ten Network. MSU will also have seven regular-season home contests aired on BTN Plus.

The Big Ten will have at least 67 women’s basket-ball broadcasts on BTN during the 2018-19 season. ESPN2 will carry at least nine Big Ten women’s basketball contests this year. BTN will televise the first12gamesofthe2019BigTenWomen’sBasket-ballTournament,coveringthefirstroundthroughthesemifinalsfromMarch6-9,withESPN2settobroadcast the tournament championship game on March 10.

FREQUENT FLIERRedshirt-junior guard Shay Colley spent time over-seas this summer playing for the Canadian Na-tional Team. Playing in Europe, Colley helped guide CanadatothequarterfinalsoftheFIBAWomen’sWorld Cup.

CHARGERS RETURN TO BRESLINHillsdale has several players who are familiar with the Breslin Center. Makenna Ott, Brittany Gray and Jaycie Burger all played in Michigan high school state championship games on that court, with Gray (2014, 2015) and Burger (2016, 2017) both win-ning championships there. Hillsdale returns three starters and seven of its top nine players from last year’s conference championship team.

FANS CONTINUE TO PACK THE BRESLIN Michigan State women’s basketball continues to packtheBreslinCenter,finishingthe2017-18sea-son 10th in the nation and second in the Big Ten home attendance. The Spartans averaged 5,689 fans in 16 home games this season. MSU had a total of 91,026 fans pass through the gates. This is the 14th-straight season that the Spartans have been ranked in the top 15 nationally in attendance. MSU has had a total attendance of at least 80,000 since 2005-06.

COLLEY EARNS PRESEASON HONORTokickoffthebeginningofBigTenWomen’sBas-ketball Media Week, the conference released the Preseason Coaches and Media Polls, in addition to the preseason All-Big Ten teams on Monday. Michigan State redshirt-junior guard Shay Colley was earned Preseason All-Big Ten honors by the coaches.

Maryland was voted to finish first in both thecoaches and the media polls, while Iowa was picked second in both. In the coaches poll, Michi-gan was voted third, while Minnesota earned the third spot in the media poll. Reigning Big Ten Play-er of the Year Megan Gustafson of Iowa was voted Preseason Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media.

Last season, Colley led the Spartans in scoring and was 23rd in the Big Ten, averaging 12.4 points per game. Colley was also tied for eighth in assists with 4.3apg.InherfirstseasonwiththeSpartans,theguardalsoendedtheseasontiedforfifthinstealswith 1.9 spg.

TheSpartansfinishedthe2017-18seasonwitha19-14 record, advancing to the Sweet 16 of the WNIT. Michigan State will return four of its top scorers last season led by All-Big Ten honorees Colley, Taryn McCutcheon and Jenna Allen.

UP NEXTMichigan State will begin the regular season with three-straight home games. MSU opens the sea-son hosting Bowling Green on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Spartans will take on East Tennessee State at 1 p.m., as part of a double-header with the MSU men’s team. Michigan State will close out the homestand against Wright State on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.

MICHIGAN STATE HEAD COACH SUZY MERCHANT

Beginning her second decade at the helm of the Michi-gan State women’s basketball team, Suzy Merchant’s success is undeniable. Entering her 12th season as head coach of the MSU women’s basketball program, Mer-chant has proven to be one of the best coaches in Michi-gan State history and a force in the Big Ten Conference. Throughherfirst11seasons,MerchanthasbroughttheSpartan program to the upper echelon at the Big Ten andnational level.TheSpartanshavefinishedthirdorbetter in the Big Ten in eight of the last 11 seasons, and her conference record of 118-68 (63.4%) is in the top-12 career winning percentage in the 34-year history of the Big Ten and is the fourth-highest percentage among ac-tive coaches. The Spartans have won at least 20 games in nine of her 11 seasons.

The Great Lakes State native was hired at MSU on April 30, 2007, after spending time as a head coach at Eastern Michigan (1998-07) and Saginaw Valley State (1995-98). In her 23 years as a head coach, she has won nearly 65 percent of her games, collecting a 445-242 (.648) career record, including 244-122 (.667) in 11 seasons in East Lansing. Merchant became the fastest Spartan coach to 100 wins. She is also the winningest coach in Eastern Michigan history, compiling a 147-91 record in her nine seasons.

major Big Ten awards - Kalisha Keane was the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2010-11, following up the Sixth Player of the Year award as a junior, while Lykendra Johnson (2010-11) and Allyssa DeHaan (2009-10) were named Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year. DeHaan, whofinishedhercareersecondall-timeinNCAAhistoryin blocked shots, and Keane were also named All-Amer-icans following their senior seasons. In 2013-14, Aerial PowersbecamethefirstSpartanfreshmantoearnfirst-team All-Big Ten honors. Powers would go on to earn first-teamAll-BigTenhonors in2014-15and2015-16,aswell as being named an All-American both seasons. Dur-ing the 2016-17 season, Tori Jankoska became the Spar-tanall-timeleadingscoreraswellasearningfirst-teamAll-Big Ten and All-American honors.

Last season, the Spartans battled injuries throughout the season and still managed to make the Sweet 16 of the WNIT, ending the season with a 19-14 mark and a 7-9 BigTenrecord.MSUearneditsfirst-everwinoverMary-land on Jan. 11. Four Spartans earned All-Big Ten honors last season: Branndais Agee, Jenna Allen, Shay Colley and Taryn McCutcheon earned honorable mention hon-ors.Onceagain,MichiganStatecontinuedtofilltheBre-slinCenter,finishing10thinthenationandsecondintheBig Ten in attendance, averaging 5,689 fans per game.

During the 2016-17 season, Michigan State reached the NCAA Tournament with a 21-12 record, including go-ing9-7inBigTenaction.Theyearwasfilledwithmorerecord-breaking performances as Jankoska became the firstSpartantoscoreover2,000points.FourSpartanswere honored with All-Big Ten honors. Jankoska was namedfirst-teamAll-BigTen,whileAgee,TayaReimerand McCutcheon were named to the honorable men-tionsquad.MSUfinishedeighthinthenationandfirstin the Big Ten in attendance, averaging 6,011 fans per game.

The 2015-16 season was a return to form for the Spar-tans, as MSU ended the season with a 25-9 overall re-cord. Michigan State ended league play 13-5, which was good for third place in the ultra-competative Big Ten Conference. Powers was once again named to the first team,whileTori Jankoskawasnamedtothesec-ond team. Both Agee and Jasmine Hines earned hon-orable mention honors. Against Minnesota on Feb. 21, Merchant earned her 400th win as a head coach. The Spartanscontinuetopackthestands,finishingseventhin the NCAA in attendance with an average of 6,561 fans per game.

Powers and Jankoska earned All-Big Ten honors with PowerbeingnamedtothefirstteamandJankoskatothesecond.TheSpartansfinished10thinthenationandsecond in the Big Ten in attendance, averaging 6,119 fans per game.

In 2013-14, MSU captured a share of the Big Ten title with a 23-10 overall record and a stellar 13-3 league re-cord. The Green and White have now had 11-straight 20-winseason.TheSpartansqualifiedforthe“BigDance”for a school-record sixth-straight season, advancing to the second round. Powers was also named to the All-Freshman team, while Annalise Pickrel was named to the second-team, Klarissa Bell, Jankoska and Bella Mills picked up honorable mention honors.

In 2012-13, Michigan State overcame adversity to go 25-9, the third-most wins in program history. MSU went 10-6 in Big Ten play to tie for third and won at least 10 conference games for the 11th-straight season. They made it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game forthefirsttimeunderMerchantandfor justthesec-ond time in program history. Three Spartans earned All-Big Ten honors with junior Bell being named to the third team, and senior Jasmine Thomas and sophomore Kiana Johnson added as honorable mention selections. Also, the team had a program-record seven Academic All-Big Ten honors.

In 2011-12, the Spartans continued their string of 20-win seasons, going 20-12 and advancing to their fourth-con-secutive NCAA Tournament. MSU went 11-5 in confer-ence play to tie for second in the Big Ten. Seniors Lyk-endra Johnson and Porsche Poole earned second team All-Big Ten accolades. With the win over Oakland (Nov. 27) last season, Merchant became the fastest head coach to 100 wins as a Spartan, needing only 143 games.

Merchant put her stamp on the Spartan program dur-ingthe2010-11season,leadingtheSpartanstotheirfirstoutright Big Ten title in school history. MSU went 13-3, winning the conference by two games. The Spartans went 27-6, recording the second-most wins in program history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Merchant was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the conference’s coaches and media, becoming the third Spartan coach to earn that honor.

During her tenure with the Eagles, Merchant guided Eastern Michigan to a record of 147-91 (.618), including three 20-win seasons, three postseason appearances and two Mid-American Conference West Division titles. Before coaching at Eastern Michigan, Merchant spent three seasons at Saginaw Valley State, posting a 54-29 (.651) record. Prior to becoming a head coach, Mer-chant was the top assistant for three years at Oakland University (1992-95).

A four-year starter and three-year captain at Central Michigan (1987-91), Merchant holds Chippewa records for assists with 463 and single-season assists with 156, and is tied for first in single-game assistswith 11. Shealsofinishedhercareerthird-bestinmade3-pointfieldgoals with 75.

A native of Traverse City, Mich., Merchant was a three-sport standout at Traverse City Central High School, let-tering in basketball, volleyball and softball. She earned honorable mention All-America honors by USA Today and was a two-time Class A all-state selection in bas-ketball. She also earned all-state honors in volleyball. During the summer of 2010, she was inducted into the Traverse City Central H.S. Hall of Fame.
