How we work
» Everything the Open Group Forums and work groups create is contributed by our members– The Open Group staff provide facilitation, infrastructure and the legal umbrella needed
for competitors to collaborate– Staff also develop and operate the certification programs based upon our standards
» Key to this is our Standards Process – rules on contributions, consensus development and approval of standards– Recognised by ISO/IEC JTC1 for PAS submission
The Open Group exists to be used by our Members, to help them solve shared problems

The Professions Program
Copyright © The Open Group 2020
» Employers want to know who their Professionals are. So they need a set of criteria, and a process for measuring their employees against them.
» They also want to use these criteria to help people develop into Professionals
» Aspiring Professionals want to know what skills and experiences they need to be considered Professional,
» They also want their professional competence to be recognized by their employers and other Professionals
Problem Statement
Copyright © The Open Group 2020
» In 2005 IBM and HP came to The Open Group to work with others to define the IT Architect profession
» Key features of the outcome:– No exams – peer review by certified professionals– Documented “Conformance Requirements” defining the skills and
experiences required at 3 levels”• Certified: contributing architect• Master: lead architect• Distinguished: significant impact on client’s business
– Direct Certification by The Open Group– Ability for an employer to be accredited to run the program internally
• Criteria no less stringent• Same certificate• One register of certified people
A Little History
Copyright © The Open Group 2020
» 2006 we added the Technical Specialist Profession
» 2017 we started a major revision to the program:– Milestones for step-wise certification– And made it easier to add new Professions
» 2018 IBM asked for a Data Scientist profession to be added– Launched Jan 2019– 119 certified people
And a little more:
Copyright © The Open Group 2020
» Skills and experience based: – No specific training courses or exams. – Certification is based upon the work you have done
» Peer-reviewed: – Evaluation by certified professionals who ensure that your skills and experience
meet the requirements.» Vendor-neutral:
– Developed by a consortium of globally-recognized industry leaders and administered by The Open Group - a vendor-neutral organization.
» Global: – The same Conformance Requirements, world - wide
» Portable: – Certification applies to the individual and is fully transferable when they change
employers

Why is Data Science Important?
“Hiding within those mounds of data is knowledge that could change the life of a patient or change the world.”
Atul Butte, Stanford University
Why is Certificationfor Data Scientists Needed?
Skilled data scientists significantly improve results
Data Scientists need to have a breadth and depth of skills and experiences
Enterprises need to make sense of massive amounts of data
Data Scientists must use a disciplined method-based approach to solution development
Shortage of data science talent and lack of standards increases risk
An independent review of qualifications and experiences by peer certified data scientists mitigates the risk
Data Scientists work on mission critical issues …
…the wrong approach or flawed analysis from an inexperienced or inadequately trained data scientist can have catastrophic consequences

The New Data Scientist Certification is Experience-Based
Do Data Scientists Need Certification?
Knowledge-Based
Several data science certification or certificate courses are knowledge-based - you take a course or series of courses and are tested on the knowledge to earn a badge, certificate or certification.
There are many of these available.
Experience-Based
Experience-Based certifications are earned through the application of those skills to business problems, have peer-reviewed projects, giveback and leadership requirements.
There are 3 Levels of Professional Data Scientist Certification.

IBM has implemented a certification model for Data Scientist which meets The Open Group standards.
Data Scientist Professional Certification
In first year …
Became an Award Winning Certification
and ….
Made the Top 15 Most Influential Data Scientist
Certification List
IBM’s implementation of this career model is accredited by The Open Group.
IBMers who are certified receive the equivalent level of certification from The Open Group.
This provides them with recognizable certification both internally and externally.
IBM’s implementation of this certification model was awarded a Silver Stevie Award in the Best Employers category in Sept. 2019
Today Data Scientists can go directly to The Open Group to certify
or
Companies can implement the certification model and become accredited by The Open Group as IBM did

Open Certified Data Scientist
The key skill and contribution Data Scientists bring to their organizations is the ability to integrate statistical, economic, and computer science techniques to address business problems.
Data Scientists develop statistical models; combinations of postulates, data and inferences designed to solve a business problem using formal methods to guide and drive the development of solutions.
• Open CDS has been developed out of a requirement of the IT sector, to verify that Data Scientist professionals have the qualities and capabilities required to produce effective analysis of data to the overall improvement of business.
