Drive for Enhanced Broadband. Consumer demand for HDTV and high-speed Internet access services continues to rise and service providers are moving quickly to expand capacity throughout the network. Nowhere is that more visible than in the last mile of the access infrastructure. Most new greenfield deployments are fiber-based, as there are tremendous advantages in deploying new fiber versus new copper. Many times, delivering FTTH is the best solution — offering carriers a high-capacity fiber access network that easily scales to handle the most bandwidth-intensive services and enables the delivery of next-generation services so carriers can increase the Average Revenue Per Unit (ARPU).

The Right Technology. Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and point-to-point Active Ethernet have emerged as the key enabling technologies for FTTH deployments. Offering carriers end-to-end IP/Ethernet connectivity, GPON and Active Ethernet provide carriers with

the most cost-optimized, high-density solution that allows the delivery of a converged voice, video and data infrastructure. This further enables carriers to maximize their end user revenue opportunities, both now and in the future.

Enabling the Last Mile. Designed with fiber deployment in mind, the ADTRAN Total Access® 5000 provides virtually unlimited backplane capacity, offering high-capacity switching and bandwidth for ultra-broadband services. Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) provide either a full 2.5 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth per PON or up to 1 Gbps per end user, enabling the delivery of advanced solutions like IPTV across an all-Ethernet architecture. ADTRAN’s Total Access 300 Series of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) provides carriers with a variety of delivery options for residential, business and mobile backhaul opportunities. The Total Access 5000 offers the industry’s most comprehensive set of broadband solutions from an all-Ethernet platform.

End-to-End Ethernet. ADTRAN is focused on delivering solutions that are designed for tomorrow’s networks. Ethernet’s global standardization and rapidly growing deployment are fueling the next-generation network. Deploying fiber to the end user is a costly proposition for any carrier. When making that investment, it is critical that the right technology is in place to enable the required services. Bandwidth alone is not enough. Service convergence and awareness are critical to success. The Ethernet core of the Total Access 5000 allows carriers to confidently deploy a solution that they know is built for tomorrow’s network, while enabling end-to-end Ethernet.

Enabling Ultra Broadband over Copper. Wireline carriers are faced with the difficult challenge of transforming their existing networks to provide next-generation services, enabling not only voice and simple broadband connections to the Internet, but newer services such as IPTV and Voice over IP (VoIP). The dynamics of these new services are constantly evolving, making it difficult to identify the right network architecture. Although fiber access technologies may provide the ultimate solution for addressing consumer access bandwidth - especially in greenfield deployments, the fact remains that there is a massive embedded base of copper access infrastructure. Technological advances including G.fast and vectored and bonded VDSL2 are enabling ultra broadband speeds over copper media, provided that loop lengths are reduced. ADTRAN Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) Broadband Access Systems supply the performance and value needed to enable these services.

Innovation Makes It Happen. ADTRAN Total Access 1100 Series Broadband Access Systems represent an innovative approach to the successful deployment of FTTN architectures. Recognizing the technological and economic barriers of traditional cabinet-based DSL deployments, ADTRAN designed stand-alone, weather-proof FTTN systems to eliminate the need for expensive cabinet enclosures, heat exchangers and site construction, which account for a large portion of the total cost of deployment. Depending on density, ADTRAN FTTN solutions can deliver FTTN-based services for at least 50 percent less than traditional cabinet-based DSLAMs. This allows carriers to more effectively utilize the capacity of the copper network over the last mile.

Changing the Broadband Business Case. As service providers continue to address the deployment of triple-play services, ADTRAN FTTN solutions will play a key role in shortening copper loops to enable service delivery. The flexibility and innovative design of these systems allows service providers to use them to economi-cally address both network and next-generation services, while providing a migration path toward a converged network architecture. The ADTRAN Total Access 1100 Series is robust enough to go anywhere in the outside plant environment — giving service providers unmatched flexibility to deploy broadband services.

Choose the Right Partner. ADTRAN is an established leader in broadband access. From contributions in the development of industry standards to superior customer service and product quality, ADTRAN has always delivered system solutions with flexibility and longevity. Whether it is consumer-market Internet access and HDTV or business-class Ethernet service delivery — there is an ADTRAN system to support the network needs with the value carriers have come to expect.

Blending Access and Transport. Historically the industry response to higher bandwidth demand has been to develop new high-performance optical technologies for the core and/or customer side of the network. This is demonstrated by today’s development of 100 Gbps interfaces for core network routers or 10 Gbps interfaces for PON and Carrier Ethernet devices, which de-liver high bandwidth client-side services access. However, when the core and/or access network performance is boosted, the edge of the network inevitably becomes the new network bottleneck. The response to clearing this new bottleneck has often been to take these same core solutions and adapt them for the edge of the network. This transition from core to edge has been burdened with inefficiency—overlay and oversized solutions which require new infrastructure and operational requirements. ADTRAN provides solutions which are optimized for multiple applications and are purpose built for the edge of the network. This saves costs attributed to space, power and pro-cedural upgrades. ADTRAN has edge-optimized, right-sized Packet Optical Transport Solutions (P-OTS). This new optical solution segment is known as the Optical Networking Edge (ONE).

Add a Card Not a Rack. In the past, there was a clear distinction between transport network elements and access network elements. The distinctions were largely governed by the location of functions in the network. However with the

explosion of bandwidth at the edge of the network, service providers have been forced to consider colocating transport network elements right next to access network elements. Transport network elements are expensive and difficult to manage. Most of the transport network elements are not designed for hardened environments that are common at the edge. For many customers, this side-by-side deployment model for collocated transport and access network elements is unrealistic. However, the ADTRAN ONE solution integrates these same packet optical technologies into compact, system-on-a-blade architectures. This lowers start-up cost for edge and access network deployments yet provides pay-as-you-grow scalability to support metro and regional transport applications.

Multi-service scalability. The ADTRAN ONE™ packet optical solution delivers advanced optical services such as Ethernet, CPRI or Fibre Chan-nel over OTN, WDM or ROADM closer to the customer, and allows operators to launch new bandwidth and real-time intensive services without causing bottlenecks in their network. ONE also delivers scalable reliability enabling operators to capitalize on growing mobile backhaul, cloud computing, business Ethernet and residential broadband business opportunities. With the ONE solution, service providers increase competitive-ness, realize quicker time to revenue and ride the bandwidth wave to success.

Small Cell Expansion of 4G/LTE. The relentless demand for premium video services is putting a tremendous strain on network access infrastruc-tures as wireless service providers (WSPs) look to support the resulting backhaul traffic. In order to preserve scarce spectrum resources WSPs are deploying tens of thousands of small or metrocells. For these unique deployments unlike larger macrocells can leverage more than point to point fiber - GPON and VDSL2 will also be leveraged to deliver low cost, native Ethernet to these small cells that will increase 4G coverage and typical service speeds.

Legacy to Next-Generation Migration. Service providers, focused on the delivery of new revenue, are introducing new network capabilities and applications. As network operators invest in new Ethernet networks to support this growth, they must continue to support incumbent access services used by established mobile networks such as traditional GSM- or CDMA-based mobile services. These legacy technologies typically enable comprehensive coverage for the operator’s customer base and a vital source of ongoing revenue. The recommended mobile backhaul solution offers next-generation Carrier Ethernet services and allows for the migration of incumbent SONET/SDH services and transport architectures. ADTRAN leverages OTN switch-ponder capabilities based on ITU-T G.709 to

provide effective SONET/SDH to Packet Optical migration. Also required is migration to evolving network synchronization services based on ITU-T G.8262 Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588-2008 Precision Timing Protocol.

SLA Assurance. The ADTRAN NetVanta 8044M is a modular Ethernet Access Gateway that was specifically designed to target the mobile backhaul market. Due to the strict performance requirements of mobile networks, backhaul solutions are often required to provide separate and secure customer viewable performance monitoring Web portals for each mobile network operator. A standards-based performance management tool set based on ITU-T Y.1731 and Y.1564 is used to capture delay, delay variation and loss metrics that are then presented on these performance management dashboards. ADTRAN solutions support these measurement techniques and do so to the sub 1ms accuracy needed to properly verify compliance to stringent backhaul SLAs.

Scalable Reliability. In the past, parallel networks were constructed to ensure each new service did not impact the quality of another—a method that is not only expensive to build and manage, but limits scalability. Now, service providers can eliminate the need for capital intensive overlays to support 4G backhaul services and grow their overall addressable market opportunity in both

mobile and residential backhaul applications through scalable service separation. This approach delivers scalable reliability by extending MEF-certified, wavelength-separated Ethernet services to provide important service isolation - key for serving individual mobile network operators that may share a single cell site or simultaneously offer residential broadband or business Ethernet with wholesale backhaul services.

Service Ubiquity. ADTRAN has a complete portfolio of solutions for Carrier Ethernet services utilizing fiber (EoF), copper (EoCu) and TDM (EoTDM). These solutions enable cost-effective business Ethernet service delivery across all types of network infrastructure. The Total Access 5000 supports standards-based copper pair bonding of xDSL loops for direct Ethernet service delivery. Leveraging a complete end-to-end solution with the NetVanta® 800 and NetVanta 8000 Series of network termination equipment, the Total Access 5000 also offers an innovative approach to delivering Ethernet services by aggregating bonded copper, bonded circuits and fiber, while supporting multi-megabit rates for Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) certified Carrier Ethernet circuits. This combination allows carriers to ubiquitously offer Ethernet services across the entire network, enabling new revenue-generating services for businesses.

More Bandwidth. Historically, private line circuits have been the solution for symmetrical business delivery, carrying everything from traditional TDM voice and Frame Relay to IP. However, as business customers are faced with newer, higher speed applications, the need for more efficient and economical Ethernet service is growing. In an ideal setting, carriers would run fiber to every busi-ness and greatly simplify Ethernet deployment; yet, up to 80 percent of businesses around the world are still served by copper, not fiber. With competitive pressures mounting, service providers have to

find innovative ways to deliver business Ethernet services across today’s network infrastructure.

Carrier Class. ADTRAN incorporates the Ethernet resiliency and redundancy features necessary to support high-availability business circuits. ADTRAN Ethernet solutions offer redundant common control with standards-based uplink redundancy mechanisms to the core network. Additionally, ADTRAN’s AnyPort bonding feature allows carriers to bond pairs/circuits across multiple card slots in the Total Access 5000 chassis. Standard Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) protection mechanisms for both facility- and card-level protection is supported, providing maximum resiliency for high-availability business circuits. Additionally, ADTRAN Carrier Ethernet solutions are MEF certified, providing carriers with a powerful standards-based tool set of traffic management, Quality of Service (QoS), and performance-measurement capabilities that enable carriers to offer flexible Service Level Agreement (SLA)-based services to their end customers.

Operational Effectiveness. Carriers must deploy service delivery solutions which minimize the operational costs associated with end-to-end service activation, assurance and diagnostics. ADTRAN solutions do this.

Aligned with Business Operations. ADTRAN’s Advanced Operational Environment (AOE) transforms the traditional operational environment from equipment configuration and provisioning to a service-oriented approach that aligns with the service providers’ everyday business operations. AOE enables end-to-end service management, simplifying operations such as network planning, capacity manage-ment, service activation and assurance, pro-viding timely and cost effective overall service management. AOE combines home, business, and access network visibility with increased operational efficiencies, self-care opportunities, and service enablement. AOE can be used to cohesively provision, troubleshoot, and data mine network services throughout the access network and all the way into the home and small business. Effective management visibility

includes Ethernet congestion points through-out the system, with the ability to characterize both the efficacy of the individual service and the overall capacity concerns of the system. Whether it is Carrier Ethernet, IPTV, VoIP, Internet, or Circuit Emulation, ADTRAN’s advanced management solutions will verify the correct provisioning and performance of the circuit as well as prescribe corrective actions when problems arise.

A Comprehensive Perspective. The innovative AOE services management platform minimizes the operational costs associated with end to end service activation, service assurance and diagnostics using value added software products. ServiceActivator is a simplified service turn-up tool which leverages service templates created in ServiceDesigner to

minimize the interaction and time required for service activation. NorthBound Interfaces (NBI) provide simplified and powerful automation with existing billing and provisioning systems via the AOE OSS gateway, which supports both TL1 and XML. ServiceCheck makes use of ADTRAN’s extensive real-world knowledge and experience in outside plant architectures to provide comprehensive physical and logical layer diagnostics up through the service or application layer. ServiceMonitor is a non- service affecting tool which provides proactive reporting of customer bandwidth SLA compliance and Y.1731 OAM PM statistics. CapacityManager is an early warning tool, which reports the percent utilization on the Ethernet aggregator uplinks. These operation-al tools enable carriers to confidently deploy ADTRAN solutions in large scale, providing carriers with best-in-class OPEX and CAPEX solutions.

Service providers demand higher degrees of automation and efficiencies in their operational and business systems, and ADTRAN has cre-ated solutions that address the overall ecosys-tem to achieve significant savings. ADTRAN’s AOE management platform supports the APIs and core functionality required to success-fully interface other ecosystem components, eliminating manual operations and human error through orchestration and automation. This means inventory accuracy, reduced installation time and dispatch, and self-sufficiency for the service provider and their customer.
