Although primarily usedin the 18th and 19th centuries as a medium to reproduce the delicate fluidity and transparency ofwatercolors and paintings, the aquatint survived as an artist’s medium because of its atmosphericeffects and flat wash properties. draws attention to the talented printmakers of the 20thand 21st century who experimented and pushed the boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varyingbetween flat color planes and incredible plate texture, as well as dramatic areas of light and dark, theseartists demonstrate a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. The resulting images have anexpressive strength and visual intensity that relays the ingenuity to be found in the world of originalprintmaking.

45. A General Map of theMiddle British Coloniesin America viz. Virginia,Maryland, Delaware, Pen-silvania, New-Jersey, NewYork, Connecticut &Rhode-Island: Of Aquani-shuonigy the country ofthe confederate Indianscomprehending Aquani-shuonigy proper... LewisEvans. Printed for JohnBowles at the Black Horsein Cornhil, & CaringtonBowles in St. Pauls ChurchYard, London. Copperplate engraving, 1755 (c.1765). One of the founda-tion maps of ColonialAmerica, and a landmarkof 18th century Americanengraving and printing. The map is generally con-sidered one of the three most important 18th Century American maps. Lewis Evans was perhaps the principalcompiler of geographical information in colonies prior to the French & Indian War. He obtained the best availableinformation from traders and adventurers, who were then traversing the no man’s land controlled by the IroquoisIndians in the Ohio Valley, which separated the British Colonies from the French Colonial settlements near theMississippi and in the Great Lakes Regions. Evans espoused a need to aggressively settle the Ohio Valley in furtheranceof the expansionist desires of England and her colonies. His obsessive quest for information ultimately led to thepublication of his map of the Middle British Colonies and a companion pamphlet entitled Geographical, Historical,Political, Philosophical and Mechanical Essays. Evans’ map was first published June 23, 1755, the same year as Dr. JohnMitchell published his famous map of North America. Both maps intended to describe the opportunities for westernexpansion in the Trans-Alleghany region, the Ohio Valley and beyond, and to draw attention to what the authors sawas the urgent concern of "French encroachments". Aside from the political importance of these maps, each contributedenormously to the present state of cartographic knowledge of the middle colonies and the Ohio Valley. Few othermaps improved on the Evans cartography until well after the Revolutionary War. Evans’ map was extremely influential, with many pirated editions, like this example, being produced.
