If you don’t know me, I am Robert Lotstra and am

your President for this year. Being new to this position

I have appreciated all the help and guidance that has

been shown me. Mick Sherlock is my Minister for

Protocol. His knowledge about all things RSL is sec-

ond to none. I am indeed fortunate to have a hard

working and knowledgeable committee and lots of

great volunteers.

Jim Thompson will be overseeing ANZAC Day. This

year being 100 years since the beginning of World

War 1 will be a big one. Volunteers will be needed to

cover our huge workload.

On a personal note, my interests run with the day to

day running of our club, food, entertainment etc.

Thursday night suppers are booming and once the

back room is completed, we will be able to increase

our numbers. We are still looking for part time Chefs.

If anyone would like to volunteer to organise any as-

pects of Thursday suppers, or indeed any aspect of

RSL life please come forward. A regular bar person on

Wednesday nights would be great. The people who

help with the cleaning up after Thursday nights de-

serve a medal. Colin Kay has provided a steady

stream of talented musicians through our doors.

There was a great response to our first dinner/dance in

February. Just a couple of minor

hiccups. The next one will be

17 May.

Jazz on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of

the month has been economically

disappointing, but it has given us

a new supply of members.

I am certain our club is headed in

the right direction.

PORTLAND — MARCH 2014 Everyone arrived on “time” at site, except Max & Karen as the “PAJI” (Pajero) decided to have a rest on

the way over but all turned out well. Final Roll call, 11 Vans, 4 Cabins = 28 Personnel, 4Dogs.

St PATS. Day was a meal at MACS Pub to toast the Irish.

Tram ride on Sunday.

DRAMA.

Senior Citizen gets Locked in Toilets and had to be rescued. No name,

no pack drill. Another “PAJI” owner in trouble. Tony placed in

charge of gambling. No JOY at X Lotto with only having one number & that was a sup.

Weather was OK except for the last couple of days. Av wee bit damp.

Jeff Langton WON the Biggest Flag Competition even though we did-

n’t have one. Well Done JEFF.

Tony C received, with compliments of the Mac Hotel, a colouring in

book to fill in whilst out on the boat fishing.

Malcolm forgot the WOOD once again. Thanks MATE.

Thanks to all for coming as we all had a good time. If not toughen up

PRINCESSES. Will advise at a later date when next meeting due.

CARAVAN / TRAVEL GROUP

Tea Tree Gully RSL Women’s Auxiliary: Bi-monthly meetings are held between February

and December at 10.00am 3rd Monday in the RSL clubrooms. Activities include catering for light

lunches after Kokoda and Remembrance Day Services and Dawn Service breakfasts.

The first meeting for 2014 was held on Monday 17th February. Next meeting will be Monday 14th April.

Anzac Dawn Service will be held on a Friday this year and we would appreciate donations of non per-

ishable items for our raffle baskets. These can be dropped off at the RSL clubrooms any time before 23rd

April. Thank you to the nine new members who recently joined our ranks.

CHARTER FISHING EXCURSION

I (Tony) took on the job to book the charter for exceptional fishing men. Yes exceptional fisher men.

So I scour the net (as in internet) looking for a great charter to book, found an excellent site “Game On” spoke with the Skipper Joe Connor, and made him aware of how brilliant I thought his website is and as I don’t know him at all, all I can go by is his web site and our conversation. He assures me that what’s advertised on the site is exactly what will be delivered. Brilliant, we’re in for $200-00 per person for bottom fishing per day. Sounds really exciting as he is talking about big whiting, big snapper, tre-valle, squid flathead my favourite).

Final call came from Joe (Skipper) reminding us to please make sure we were all there ready to go at 6:30 a.m. Thursday 13th March and stresses again 6:30 a.m. sharp.

The Tea Tree Gully Heart Health Exercise Group has been in " action" for 10 years now. It was originally

started for Vietnam Veterans only, but is now open to any male. The class times are at 9am and 10am with

coffee and chat after each class. Just recently a Mrs Vets class was also started. This was originally for the

wives of the Veterans, but is now also open to all women. This class is at 11am with Coffee and chat after-

wards as well, (which usually only lasts for 10mins--- ppppffftt!!!).

The class duration for all classes is 1 hour (most times) and cost is $5.00. We have good, fun times at all of

the classes. I can guarantee that if you wake up "down in the dumps", come to class, you will return home a

much "happier" person. My belief is that if participants enjoy the classes, they will continue exercising week

after week and that laughter definitely is the best medicine. If you would like to find out more, you are most

FITNESS & EXERCISE CLASS

Keen as mustard, we were there ready waiting by at the latest 6:15 a.m. The 31 ft Kevlar Cat arrived 10 minutes late, the Skipper quickly greeted us with a puff of smoke. He then advised us the decky was not available, following this he had me steering the boat out from the breakwater while the Skipper retrieved the fenders.

John was asked to look after the boat so the Skipper could drop the anchor, a boat this size with no elec-tric winch. One of us burlied the scene (burley supplied from dinner the night before ) and we soon caught some snapper. (S. A. illegal to keep.) Victorians need small fish to make their day as they cannot lure our big reds into their waters (They can keep the Grand Prix)).

Anchor up and move, again a smorgasbord of burley from our group. Skipper two blocks of burley for a whole day of fishing. Eventually our burley supply retired to a bunk.

Things were improving (no not the fishing) the Skipper offered us a cup of coffee, we all said “yes please”, he explained that he only had 3 cups, one had a broken handle, some might want to have tea as he’s running low on coffee, milk and sugar; booked for 7 people. From here on we knew we’d been had.

We continued to entertain ourselves with a few jokes and a couple beers. Personally by the latter part of the afternoon I was looking forward to being back on the wharf. We were in for further disappointment. The Skipper informs us he has no vacuum sealed bags for the catch - what a surprise …not!

To get things moving we ended up scaling our fish, paid and left. Many thanks to Keith who made an excellent job of cooking the parrot fish, a real treat ($200-00 a bite).

Any future charter will not be booked from perusing websites, instead I’ll book when I get to the destina-tion and have had a chance to have a chat with the locals.

Thank you to all the men, the best part for me was to be out on the boat with all of you. HAPPY fishing in S. A. Cheers.

DARTS This season we have 5 teams competing in the North Eastern Dart Association.

The Sub Branch would like to extend to them our best wishes and a huge welcome to the new players.

At this time of the year all teams are competing quite well, and are looking forward to the finals.

GOLF A reminder that the Tea Tree Gully RSL Golf War will be held at the TTG Golf Club Monday

20th October 2014.

Registration forms will out around the 1st week August. It would assist the organising committee if play-

ers, register early, as there are limited numbers of participants to tee off.

Our Sub Branch is also going to hold a special Golf Day on Monday 13th April 2015 to commemorate

100 years of Gallipoli. This event will also be held at the TTG Golf Club. Please enter this date into your

forward planning calendar for 2015 as again there will be limited numbers of players.

”Oldies” GROUP

The “Oldies” are meeting two days a month this year, our Games Day was cancelled because our mem-

bers are getting older and not as fit as we used to be.

Our Christmas Luncheon in December 2013 was a good day with 50 people enjoying a two course meal

and entertainment.

The 2nd Tuesday if each month is Entertainment Day, our first meeting for 2014 was a Quiz Day, in Feb-

ruary we were very privileged to have members of the Police Band play for our group. The meeting in

March was “Oldies” 21st Birthday celebration, our birthday cake was cut by Nell Meakins and Keith

Horne who were there for our first meeting in March 1993.

The entertainment has been very good so far this year and we have plenty more booked for 2014.

Bingo is held on the 4th Tuesday, this is a fun light hearted day, nothing too serious.

We would love some new members to come and join us, we have afternoon tea following our meeting,

so if you would like to come please bring a plate to share.

I am now 90 years old, but not ready to give up yet. If you would like a programme please phone me on

I look forward to seeing all members at the ANZAC Dawn Service where I will be brewing the coffee

that I first helped with in the old tin shed about 53 years ago.

On a crowded train, travelling in Europe, a U.S. Marine walked the entire length of the train looking for a seat before realising that the only seat available was currently occupied by a well-dressed, middle-aged French woman's poodle. The weary Marine asked, "Ma'am, may I have that seat?" The French woman just sniffed, and said to no one in particular, "Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat." The Marine walked the entire length of the train again, and discovered that the only seat available was in fact the one currently being occupied by the poodle. Trudging tiredly back, the marine arrived once more before the French woman and said, "Please Ma'am, may I sit down? I'm very tired?" She snorted, "Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant. Why should I care if you are tired?" This time, the Marine didn't say a word, but simply picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window, then sat down. The woman shrieked, "Someone, defend my honour! This American needs to be put in his place!" An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up, "Sir, you Americans seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold your fork in the wrong hand, and you drive your cars on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong bitch out of the window."

Prayer wheel for our soldiers

Please stop for a moment and say the following prayer for

our troops around the world -

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.

Protect them as they protect us.

Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in time of need.

An elderly gentleman...

Had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the

doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman

to hear 100%

The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, 'Your

hearing is perfect.. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.'

The gentleman replied, 'Oh, I haven't told my family yet.

I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!'

Increase to basic postage rate.

Concession rate stamps will be available to any indi-vidual who has a Commonwealth Government conces-sion card. Eligible customers will be required to regis-ter for an Australia Post concession card - details on the registration process will follow completion of the ACCC notification process. It's estimated that approxi-mately 5.7 million Australians will be able to access concession rate stamps.

Included in the notification is a proposal to introduce a concession rate stamp for eligible Australians to continue to have access to 60 cent postage for stan-dard letters until 2017.

Golden Grove Primary School

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION CEREMONY 2014 Anzac Day falls this year during school holidays. Golden Grove Primary school commemorated ANZAC DAY, Friday 28th March. TTG RSL was invited to attend with Darryl Lavis arriving with his Jeep complete with replica 50 cal machine gun fully mounted. Robert Lostra, Trevor Harvey, Fred Jackson & Lois Ramage representing the Tea Tree Gully sub Branch.

The students took it in turns with the microphone to wel-come and introduce all in attendance for the service. The Catafalque Party lowered the flag to half mast. Mr Ken Duthy from the RAR Association gave a short talk as guest speaker. Wreath’s were laid by 3 students. Lois recited the Ode of Remembrance. The Last Post was played then followed shortly after a minutes silence, by The National Anthem. The Catafalque Party was then dismissed.

After this beautifully put together Ceremony the guests, a few school staff and some students moved to the staff room. Tea or coffee was provided, with students forcing cakes and biscuits upon us all. As a sign of appreciation each guest was rewarded with a delight-fully labelled, package of two homemade ANZAC biscuits.

The Jeep was a real highlight for the students, both boys & girls showing great interest.

Fred Jackson 4 / 709798 13th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery

When I lived at Fort Largs my father was in the Army. We had a huge fowl yard & dad told

me to get a duck & lop its head off. That done, now to pluck it so here is the scary part. My

hand goes up the back side, grabbed the gizzards to start pulling them out, when it goes

QUACK, QUACK. From that day on, I have never plucked or put my hand up a ducks you

know what.

Extract from “Veterans Remember”. Sergeant Batchelor, a man whom Fred & his mates greatly respected, warned the men, “I’ll

make you blokes do anything except have a baby—and I am working on that!”

When an officer heard Fred was a spray painter by trade, he got Fred to paint all the grease

nipples on the 25 pounder guns red. A job that had to be done with a tin of paint and a tiny

paint brush!

Another time, Fred made some comment about a boundary fence being all that not far away,

whereupon he was ordered to jog the full mile—and—a—half down to the fence, holding his

rifle above his head. Along the way he happened to turn round and saw the rest of the pla-

toon, forced to follow likewise, all because they had laughed at Fred’s predicament.

Some of the city blokes were a bit wet behind the ears when it came to life in the bush. He

recalls one story going around that you had to be careful how you stored the ammunition dur-

ing practice shoots, because kangaroos would wander up, bang their tails on it, and set it off.

"I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; men who suffered and sacrificed together, who were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my com-rades...Such good men."
