NYSSA’s New Interactive Trail Map
Over the past year, NYSSA Trail Coordinator Jim Rolf has been working with the NYSSA Trails Committee on a replacement for the former MVGIS webmap that was closed down by its owner two years ago. As announced recently on our Facebook page, we are just a few days away from releasing the public side of that Interactive Trail Map. It will be found on the NYSSA website at http://nysnowmobiler.com/ride-ny-trails/ (look for “Interactive Trail Map” on the menu).
The big benefit to riders is it will showcase trails as OPEN, CLOSED, or NOT REPORTED. Club reps will have complete control of setting their own trail status conditions, as well as adding in any ALERTS of trail issues, trail reroutes, and unfunded club trails. Those edits will begin to be entered by the clubs once the webmap is online. We are still identifying the club volunteers who will be handling this task.
Ever since the MVGIS webmap was shut down, NYSSA has received many requests to have a central site to showcase which trails are indeed open and which ones are not. In addition to this, many other features in the Interactive Trail Map will allow all viewers, at no charge, to see the Points of Interest (POIs) entered by the clubs in addition to the trail status conditions. Lodging, fuel, restaurants, re-pair/parts shops, scenic vistas, and Park & Ride lots that are generally available and plowed out will all be on the map.
This is an exciting project, one that will obviously be a “work in progress” this first season and will be squarely indicative of the effort the clubs put into this project, but it will be a benefit to riders and clubs alike to have this info out there for all NYS snowmobile trail riders to view online or on their smart phones.
Next: Groomer Tracking!
We have also been working with the RIDE COMMAND smartphone app to get better data and more current trail GPS locations on their map. Behind the scenes, we are testing the ability to track groomer runs and to gain GPX track data for trail reroutes. If you are looking for a smartphone app with the trails on it to complement our new Webmap, download the Ride Command app this year.

New! NYSSA Membership Card now prints with Voucher
Several years ago, NYSSA chose to eliminate the plastic membership card to save money and avoid a membership fee increase. The card packages were nearing $3.00 each, and NYSSA dues are only $5.00. Recently changes have been made to the membership voucher to add a second page that includes an image of your membership card and a place to record and save your password. Vouchers are downloaded as a PDF and members are encouraged to store it on their computers. You can print both pages of your voucher if you would like or you can skip page two by adjusting printing preferences (sometimes called “properties”) and only printing page 1. Please be sure to save your password in a secure place. Soon we will begin promoting some of our largest sponsors on this page. It is our hope that you will patronize our sponsors and take advantage of the many discounts they offer. Our discount program includes hotels, car rentals, and much much more!
The membership voucher, pictured at left, is still re-quired at NYS DMV to obtain your registration discount. They will not accept the above pictured membership card as proof of membership. If you are registering your snowmobile online with NYS DMV, enter the 12-digit voucher ID found above the barcode on the voucher, without the dashes (just enter the 12 numbers).
6-digits
Did you know? You may register all the sleds you own with just one membership, as long as all the sleds belong to you and/or your spouse and are registered at the same address. Minimum Club dues are $30.00.

President’s Message by Rosanne Warner, NYSSA President 315-697-8130 [email protected]
And so it begins….
A lot of our members have already heard about the recent fatalities in the North Country and NYSSA would like to stress to its members to please slow down. Speed has been found to be the #1 factor in most snowmobile accidents.
The weekend of December 7th has proved to be a very sad and unfortunate weekend for three devastated families with reports coming out of Old Forge and Montague concerning three separate fatal snowmobile accidents. Not one of us
want to start the season out like this, and we urge you all to slow down and enjoy your ride. It’s not about the
number of miles you make, it’s about the memories.
NYSSA offers its sincerest condolences to the families of the three snowmobilers who were lost this weekend. Our
thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Ice Safety Concerns?
We all remember 2 seasons ago was probably the worst fatality season we have had with riders on ice. There were 10 fatalities in the 2016-2017 season, 10 too many. With the early snow showing up in November we could see issues with
ice safety again this season. Early snow insulating the ground and water could definitely be a factor this season. We
can all agree that cold temperatures to drive the frost into the ground BEFORE the snow makes for better riding.
NYSSA clubs need to be diligent and monitor the water sources where riders are most likely to ride, as these areas have
proven potential for fatalities. We will do our best to report these conditions to the public.

Try a Safety Course!
The other day I had a chance to sit in on the Snowmobile Youth
Safety Course that my club sponsors each year. Usually it
conflicts with our NYSSA Board meeting. The Grafton Trail Blaz-ers, like many of the clubs around the state, pull out all the stops
to ensure that those who attend have a very positive experience. The Club opens up the pocket book and serves some breakfast
snacks, juice, coffee, fruits etc. plus lunch. All to ensure that both our young riders and their parents have the energy to get
through what is a seriously long course on rider safety. The
class had 20 youth attendees and 18 adults. Many of those adults had been riding for years.
The class was led by Jim Blessing, a local resident who has expansive snowmobile experiences and that has been teaching
the class for at least 25 years. It was clear that Jim takes that experience and translates it into wisdom beyond the course
curriculum. For each chapter he had a real world experience to
drive home the subject material. Jim’s teaching style is not unique to the hundreds of instructors around the state but it underscores why NYSSA would not support a computer based course with no classroom instruction.
Jim gave me an opportunity to talk about NYSSA, SLEDNY and our snowmobile system across the state. I took the opportunity to describe to them the importance of our landowners and the importance of volunteering with their club. I
attempted to underscore with them that no volunteers equals no trails. I also conveyed the importance of respecting our landowners. That if they are approached by a landowner, remove their helmet and start with a thank you to the
landowner. If they accidently went where they did not belong, apologize and obey what the landowner wants them to do. Their response can be the difference between whether that trail will be there next year or not.
I left the class with a real sense of being revitalized. I had a chance to speak with a mom who was looking forward to this season when for the first time her daughter could ride her own sled out on the trail and not as a passenger on a
two-up sled. I had a chance to talk with a father and son who were on a mission to start snowmobiling this season. I
had the sense like so many dads before him that he saw this a great father son bonding opportunity. But I was most impressed when the three young men who were sitting in front of me asked at what age could they join the club and
volunteer. They clearly did not want to wait for their parents to sign them up. They seemed to understand it was up to them to keep the sport going.
Hopefully, that which everyone learned in the safety class will stay with them forever and translate into the next generation
of snowmobilers.
Jim Blessing (in plaid shirt) goes over the parts of the snow-
mobile with safety course attendees.
You can view safety course listings here.

TRAILS…and Our Landowners
“Southern Hunting Zone” Trail Opening Dates
One additional reminder this year, as this has to be the most asked question that I have been
fielding, followed by “Can you send me my voucher # and correct my email address in the
membership system?”. Every year at this time when there’s snow in the forecast and/or on the
ground in some locations, many not familiar with
the clubs on a close, personal level or who don’t attend club meetings ask “when do the trails officially open?”. The actual answer is not a specific date in most cases nor is there a set-date
within NYS laws. The time when clubs and most
private landowners open the trails completely depends on agreements with those landown-
ers, many of whom hunt and/or allow hunting on their properties with their request that they do not
want anyone riding on their land during the hunt-ing season. After this first weekend where some
Lake Effect Snow covered the ground in specific
areas, there is an obvious need to re-emphasize that the trails DO NOT open until the clubs are satisfied that their trail projects are completed, the safety
signs are all up, and their landowners are ready as well.
Having sufficient snow base on the ground is also a requirement on top of everything written above, but
the amount of snow is NOT the final deciding factor in whether the trails are open or not. #1, and for the minority that need to have this reinforced…it’s the LANDOWNERS who decide along with the clubs who they give permission to when
the snowmobile trails on their properties open. Snowmobile trail riding is not a RIGHT just because you bought a sled
and paid your registration fee … it is a privilege that snowmobile owners get to enjoy AFTER the clubs secure the per-mission, develop the trail systems, build bridges/culverts and sign the trails, and lastly and most importantly when the
landowners say it’s alright to open them, and NOT until that time everything is settled! In some cases, farming land-owners may have crops or livestock in the fields!
It’s a sad fact that there are many volunteers who comprehend the situation clubs are in and they are the ones who step up to “self-patrolling” our snowmobile trails in an attempt to educate those unwilling to use common sense or
respect for what we have in place. If you ride with those that run loud pipes…take the time to educate them. If anyone within your group rides in open fields off the marked trails…let them know what their actions are doing to the sport we
all enjoy. If we don’t collectively start to get more respect from those within our sport, then we will only keep losing our
trails. And, on that same note, if we don’t get more new volunteers to help deal with the trail building, landowner rela-tions, signing, grooming, and re-routes, then there won’t be the system we have today that so many do enjoy.

An Unfortunate Start to the 2018-19 Season
In the first week of the season where some of the trails in the northern areas opened, confirmed reports of 3 fatal snow-
mobile accidents and multiple serious accidents have come in. With all the rain we received since October and the
cold temps recently, there are obviously lots of icy conditions and without any real snowbanks lining the edges of the trails
there is no buffer between the trails and trees.
We must do a better job of thinking about the consequences
of riding faster than the conditions allow or that our own abili-
ties and sled capabilities can handle. I have heard from LEOs that a couple of the most severe accidents were not going too
fast, but that the speed was just faster than the trail could withstand at that particular moment. Sad, really…thinking of
these families having to hear of their loved ones going out to
enjoy the sport they love and to return dead, especially during the Holiday season.
We need to SLOW DOWN, and enjoy the trails so we can head out to enjoy them again and again and again. Let’s hope this
is not the unfortunate trend going forward this season, which started out earlier than in recent years with snow.
Trail Signage
Signs On Snowmobile Trails
NYSSA and SLEDNY continue the education program emphasizing proper snowmobile trail signage. A major point that will be emphasized again this year is that ALL yellow signs with black lettering and/or illustrations are meant
to alert riders of an impending change in the trail characteristic (or trail closure). Riders should recognize them as a cautionary warning to slow down, being fully prepared to travel past such trail situations safely. Signs such as
“Bridge Ahead”, “Winter Crops”, and Object Markers (hazard markers) are some examples of these yellow cautionary
signs which riders see while snowmobiling on the marked trails that indicate areas of concern. Yellow arrows are gener-ally placed at the apex (outside edge) of the curves, with curve ahead warning signs used in advance of most curves.
Remember…STAY RIGHT and BETWEEN THE STAKES and ride within your own physical ability and your sled’s capa-bilities!
The NYS Parks Snowmobile Guidelines Handbook is found here: https://parks.ny.gov/recreation/snowmobiles/documents/2017NYSSnowmobileSignHandbook.pdf
There should never be excuses as to riders not seeing trail signs or knowing what their meaning is, and as the line below from NYS Parks and Recreation law clearly states, the actual responsibility is on the owners and/or operators
of snowmobiles. Responsibility is as important as signage. Snowmobile trail signs are great, but every snowmobiler is
responsible for their own actions:
“…snowmobiling is a voluntary activity that may be hazardous…”.
REMEMBER…55 MPH is the maximum snowmobile speed limit on funded trails or
lands in NYS, UNLESS otherwise marked lower. Most State lands have lower speed limits in place. Ride safe, stay right on the marked trails, and make each ride enjoyable…getting
safely home!

Adirondack Rail-Trail News
We have been working with the NYS DOT and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad maintenance manager over the past 2 months regarding many washouts and issues with the Travel Corridor. As announced recently on our social me-
dia and website, a portion of the Corridor between Beaver River and Sabattis has been temporarily closed due to an
emergency contracted repair project. No snowmobiles can travel within that area. The DOT hopes this project only takes 2 weeks to finish, so watch for more updates soon.

The HENRY D. ROSS III Memorial Fund
Submitted by Maria Ross [email protected]
Henry Ross III grew up in Mayfield, NY. He loved all aspects of living in the Adirondacks within a small
community. There are mountains, lakes and plenty of fields and back roads for boys to be boys. He loved
anything with a motor (preferably fast) and believed in living life to the fullest.
He was an avid outdoorsmen and always on the go.
He made sure to take advantage of the activities in all
seasons including hunting, fishing, boating and snow-mobiling.
Henry was only 24 years old when he was in a snow-
mobile accident on December 23, 2016. He lost his
life doing something he loved on a lake he knew very
well which is why we knew we needed to do some-
thing. We created the Henry D Ross III Memorial
Fund Inc. with a hope to help others.
Some of the many things that our community and our memorial fund have been able to provide so far:
Two snowmobiles and a trailer to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department
to help reinstate the Snowmobile Patrol.
A snowmobile and trailer to the Mayfield Fire Department for the first responders.
Monetary donation to Regional Food Bank towards the Mayfield Central School Backpack Program.
Created and delivered Safe Lake Posters to businesses around the Great Sacandaga Lake.
Donated Life Jacket Float Coats to the Mayfield Fire Department.
We are extremely excited about our most recent adventure! We are in the process of creating a recreational GPS-based
APP that will allow users to enter hazards or alerts on our lakes, trails and everyday places often overlooked. The app
will instantly mark the GPS location, giving all users the visibility and will be available for use anywhere! The app will be
called SEND IT. The alerts that will be available are:
Debris
Thin Ice
Open water
Ice heave
Rocks/obstruction
Low water level
Trail closed
Police/Event/Heavy Activity
Non-emergency assistance needed
Good conditions

GSL SAFE LAKE INITIATIVE
We are also part of a larger group that gathers
frequently to brainstorm on safety called the
GSL Safe Lake Initiative. This group consists of local law enforcement, associations and first
responders. Some of the many members of the GSL Safe Lake Initiative are:
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office
Sean Craig Memorial Fund Inc.
Henry D Ross III Memorial Fund
NY State Police
Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
Watercraft Network
Great Sacandaga Lake Association
Many great things have come from these meetings, includ-
ing the first ever PWC Safety Day which was recognized for
their efforts in 2018 and will be expanding outside of the
Northeast!

NYSSA would like to remind its
members that all of you, includ-
ing your family members listed
on your membership account and
voucher, are covered by a FREE
Accidental Death and Dismem-
berment insurance benefit.
provided by the
National Income Life Insurance Company (NILICO).
Each year a mailing is sent to our members encouraging you to
return a beneficiary card. In times of need, this helps your family
receive the $4,000 death benefit more timely.
Of course NILICO would like to speak with you about other
types of insurance that might benefit your family.

NYSSA & SLEDNY Recognize Youth Excellence with Scholarships
By Anne M. O’Dell, NYSSA General Manager
Did you know that each year, NYSSA offers scholarship awards? If you have a student in
the family headed for college, read on.
Each year, NYSSA awards two $1000 scholarships honoring people who were instrumental
to the growth of our sport: The Norris Brusoe NYSSA Scholarship and The Joan & Digger
Vriessen NYSSA Scholarship. Only members of NYS Snowmobile Clubs as of January 1
2019 are eligible for these Scholarships.
Scholarship Criterion
The NYSSA Scholarship Committee will review all applications and make its awards based upon academic achievement, extracur-
ricular involvement, community service and the quality of the original essay submitted with each application. Financial need is a
secondary criterion used in the selection of the winner. Completion of the financial need portion of the application is optional, how-
ever students who have provided a complete financial background will be given priority over those whose applications are incom-
plete when all other considerations are the same.
The 2019 essay should be about what snowmobiling means to you, or about snow-
mobiling in your state (economy, trails, environment) in five hundred (500)
words or less.
Who may apply?
Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who have been accepted at a
College, Junior College, or Vocational School, or must be College Students who
are already enrolled. The student’s Parent(s) or Guardian(s), or the Student if over
18, must be a member in good standing of NYSSA as of January 1, 2019.
To obtain a NYSSA Club membership, go to:
https://membership.nysnowmobiler.com .
The application, letter of acceptance at the college or school the student will be
attending, transcript of grades at high school or grade record of the college you are
already attending, essay and recommendations must be received by NYSSA by
February 18, 2019 as one package. All applications must be complete to be con-
sidered. Late applications will not be considered! The applications submitted to
NYSSA will be answered by mail after judging.
The two top New York applications will be notified by the NYSSA Executive
Director and will be forwarded to the Northeast Chapter of the International Snow-
mobile Council to be considered for their three $500 scholarships.
All application materials are considered Confidential, and will be limited to ex-
amination for their intended purpose only and become property of the
NYSSA.
