The 2012 circus is over and the
attendance was up over last year.
There were a number of new acts
that everyone seemed to enjoy a
lot. I would like at this time to
thank everyone who came out this
year and in the past five years to
assist me as the Circus Chair-
man, and to support the TEBALA
SHRINE CIRCUS to make it the
success that it has been. There
are a number of changes in the
works for the upcoming years,
and I am sure that you will join
me in the support of our Circus.
Those that submit payment for
their Circus voucher will receive
a 2012 Circus Pin that they can
wear with pride. The start of the
distribution of these pins will be-
gin at this month’s Temple meet-
ing. For those that do not make
the meeting, arrangements will
be made to get your pin to you.
Your dedication and support is
what makes us great.
Again Thank You,
Loy Rice, 2012 Circus Chairman

Greetings Nobles! I am packing to go to Charlotte as I write this! I am so excited to have the opportunity to represent all of you in Charlotte at the Imperial Session. As usual there are a lot of important issues that need to be decided. But before I go, there are a lot of people that have worked very hard on behalf of Tebala that I would like to rec-ognize. First and foremost, I would like to con-gratulate Loy Rice, our Circus Chairman, on an-
other successful Circus. Loy has been our Circus Chairman for 6 years now! I would like to thank all of the Nobles that came out and represented Tebala at Blackhawk Farms. Special Thanks go out to Tom Watson & Nancy Shickles and John & Bonnie Milliren, for being there all day on both Saturday and Sunday. We couldn’t do it without these guys! I also want to thank the Air Squadron & the Blue Haze Choppers for stopping by at both the Hill Climb and at Blackhawk Farms on their way to or from parades. People really love having the opportunity to see you “up close” and maybe get that special photo. Every event is important to our fund raising efforts!! Thanks Again. As you are all aware, it was necessary for us to conduct a spe-cial election, and I am proud to announce that Tom Watson will be assuming the responsibilities of Oriental Guide for the remainder for the year. I would like to extend my most sincere appreciation to Roger Anderson, PP, Don Kimes, PP, & Tom Brawner, PP, for their invaluable assistance in overseeing this entire process. Two new members have been added to the Finance Committee at Tebala. First, I would like to congratulate Dr. Gene Gambrel on his election to the Finance Committee, as well Bill Robertson, PP, whom I appointed to the committee. Looking forward, on July 27
th we will be hosting a DeMolay De-
gree at Tebala. And on the 28th we will be at the Rockford Speed-
way for our “Racing for Kids” Event. Let’s not forget that August 4
th we will be having the Pote’s Pirate Party at Tebala. Please see
the ad in this Tebalagram for all of the pertinent information re-garding this event. Additionally, the Family Trip to the Henry Vilas Zoo will be on July 15
th, please call Denise to register if you have
not already done so. Lastly, let’s all try to get to the Illinois Shrine High School East West All Star Football game on July 14
th in
Bloomington, IL, at Illinois Wesleyan University. Please remember that there are potential new Shriners every-where. Let’s bring in a great class of new Nobles at out Fall Cere-monial. Thanks Again to everyone that has volunteered to make all of our events successful!
Yours in Faith, Dave Babcock

P l a c e Y O U R a d v e r t i s em e n t i n t h e T e b a l a G r a m T O D A Y !
As I write this article for the Tebalagram I am mindful that we are approaching the
month of July. It is the month that as a nation our focus becomes directed toward celebrat-
ing that moment in history where individuals who had reached a point of intolerance de-
cided to establish a new commitment to have a better life. This gave birth to the idea of a
new nation. Out of that came a melding of ideas that generated a Constitution from which a
new Nation was established and a will by the people to support the birthing of a new Coun-
try that today we know as the United States of America. This was not easy! A new way of
doing things was required. A new government had to be established. A new set of laws,
rules and regulations to live by had to be implemented. Not everyone believed in the possi-
bility. Many wanted to stay behind in the old life style and pushed against the change. For-
tunate for us there were enough of those who not only believed in this idea but were willing
to sacrifice all that they had for the endeavor to establish a New Nation.
Today, in the year of 2012 we are, in my humble opinion, facing a similar position with
our Fraternity. Our membership is growing more mature and going quietly into the night
resulting in a decrease in our numbers and the funds necessary to underwrite the functioning
of our Fraternity as well as our ability to provide the resources necessary for our Hospitals. It is here that the impact of
our inability to help those children yet to be discovered and recommended for admission to our hospitals that the ideal of
what we stand for will be forever forgotten. This would be a tragedy!
In order to change the direction in which we as a Fraternity are moving it might be wise for us to begin looking at
new ways of doing things. One of the interesting and most challenging responses I receive when I talk with individuals
about joining our Fraternity is “I don’t have enough time”. The response is accurate! In today’s world more is de-
manded from all of us just to stay ahead of the cost of living as well as have enough time to devote to our families. The
sooner we accept that fact the quicker we will realize the necessity to address the issue and provide a new and better way
through which recruitment can take place. The old must pass away and a new way must be allowed to rise to the surface
of our minds and implemented.
In the scriptures we are told that new wine cannot be poured into old wine skins. That to attempt this will cause the
new wine to spoil and spill to the ground because the old wine skin cannot accommodate the new wine. In order to do
justice to our fraternity I would like to suggest that we all begin to seek new ways to introduce good and honorable men
to our Fraternity. There is a need to establish a new wine skin. A new process through which new men can become
members in our beloved Shrine, the Blue Lodges, the Scottish Rite, and the York Rite.
I ask of you a willingness to rise to the surface and become a more active member in our Fraternity. I ask of you a
willingness to rise above the past and become the reason why men you know who would be an effective member in our
fraternity become invited to join us. I ask of you a willingness to become an example of the difference you choose to
see reflected in our fraternity. It is by deliberately choosing to become an example of that which is desired to be mani-
fested in the fraternity that a way is ultimately found and a new wine skin becomes established and the new wine (new
members) begin to appear.
As you know this means that we must change ourselves before we can experience any other change. This is not easy!
It was not easy to achieve Independence as a new Nation and maintain that Independence over the years so too will this
be true for each of us. When faced with adversity it is imperative to always address it with the broader objective in
mind. Sometimes I have had to ask myself if it is more important for me to be right and sacrifice the very objective I
desire to achieve than it is to work for the greater vision? I submit to you that the mission and purpose of our fraternity
is much more important than anything else. To accomplish this growth is essential!
May you be blessed during the month of July and may the experience of celebrating Independence Day be a reminder
of what a group of people can achieve when they commit themselves to a call that is worthy of their own sacrifice. I
believe that our Fraternity is worth our sacrifice. May God’s blessings be with you!

Pote’s Trip: “Riding on the City of New Orleans…”
Thanks to everyone that traveled with Laura and me to New Orleans. I think we would agree that our hotel
was beautiful, the location perfect, the weather great and the fellowship was terrific! We had a private tour of
the Mercedes Benz Dome (formerly known as the Louisiana Super Dome), saw the Saints “game day” facili-
ties and learned a lot about the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the Dome and the residents of New Orleans that
took refuge there. Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, the Steamboat Natchez and Cemetery No. 1 all
make New Orleans a one of a kind city. It may not have been the most restful night’s sleep anyone ever had,
but traveling by train was a great experience, as well. Thanks again for the memories that will last a lifetime!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! Kudos to Potentate Dave and Lady Laura! They arranged a fantastic rail journey to New Orleans that
left their travelers with wonderful memories of the glorious venture.
The trip began with each rider receiving a gift of delicious cookies, baked by Lady Laura the night be-
fore. How very kind and thoughtful! She planned the journey so well that every little item needed by the trav-
elers was prepared and ready...she is really an expert!
Potentate Dave's arranging of the Mercedes Benz Superdome (formerly called the Louisiana Superdome)
tour was outstanding. The guide was a member of the New Orleans Saints football organization, and he was
more than willing to relate many interesting details of the special Superdome and the famous team. Tebala's
group was alone in the massive dome, and everyone was extremely pleased and grateful to Dave for his efforts
in "paving the way" for this experience.
Many lines could be written about this great trip. Just visit with any one of the New Orleans travelers and
they'll tell you about their "fun times in the Big Easy". They may even show you pictures and trinkets pur-
chased there.
Again, for all of us who went, thanks for the memories, Dave and Laura!

BLUE HAZE CHOPPERS JOIN IN CELEBRATION
TO HONOR OUR VETS The Blue Haze Choppers joined many others on Monday, May 28th, at the Pecatonica Memorial Day Pa-
rade. The day started with a thank you from the Pecatonica Parade Chairman and a wish for no rain. Clouds
were on the horizon all day and a few sprinkles slowed the club temporarily. After a brief shower, it was crank
up time!! Time to show the great people of Pecatonica what the Blue Haze Choppers and Tebala Shrine Center
are all about. This parade starts the parade season for the Blue Haze Choppers and it doesn't end until October.
Our parade coordinator Brian Buza has lined up a lot of great parades this season.
In addition to the scheduled parades, the Blue Haze Color Guard presented the colors on Friday, June 1, at
Tebala’s Circus. Also, the Blue Haze Choppers had the honor to represent the Tebala Shrine Center at the
Blackhawk Raceway fund raiser, Polo Hill Climb and upcoming combined Illinois Shrine Football Game.
The Club and I are looking for any Shriner who wants to have fun, and their family can join them. Ladies
are invited to monthly dinner/meetings. Consider it date night! Bring your family members, too. ALL ARE
INVITED!
For more info, speak to any officer, Todd Kovaleski, Tom Whitaker, Todd Roberts, or our Parade Coordi-
nator, Brian Buza, and Club Advisor, Joe Lopez. Call my office 815-713-2354 and leave me your name and
address. I will send you info on the club.

Blackhawk Farms Raceway
With the exception of about an hour we had perfect weather at Blackhawk Farms! The Track owners are
extremely generous to continue year after year to donate the “Gate” to Tebala’s Transportation Fund. As an
example of why it is so important to have you out there wearing your Fez or unit regalia, Assistant Rabban,
Loy Rice was standing down in the infield of the track when he was approached by a gentleman who handed
him a $100.00 bill as a donation. I’m so glad that Loy was there or we wouldn’t have gotten that donation!
Thanks to all of the Shriners & their wives that made the trip out to Blackhawk Farms over the Father’s Day
weekend. Special thanks go to Tom Watson & Nancy Shickles and John & Bonnie Milliren for being there the
entire time! I would also like to thank the Blue Haze Choppers & the Air Squadron for coming out and shar-
ing their mini jets & choppers with the race fans. Submitted by Dave Babcock, Potentate.

90th Birthday Open House for Tebala Shriner, Charles C. Beard
Mt. Morris - Charles C. Beard will celebrate his 90th birthday at an open house hosted by his children on Saturday, July 7 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge Family Center. Also at the Moose Lodge, at 7 p.m., "Switch Track" will be playing 50's, 60's, 70's, and country music. Charles was born in Fairbank, Iowa on Friday, July 7, 1922, his fa-ther's birthday. His parents, Ira E. and Cassie Cloyd Beard, raised him on farms they rented or owned. Charles had an older sister, Margaret Beard Wilkinson (d. 2002). Charles attended Maple Grove School (at the same country schoolhouse his father attended) 3 miles west of Mt. Morris. As a youth, he was renowned for pranks, demonstrating a joie de vivre that has carried him throughout his life. He graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1940. On August 23, 1947, Charles married Marjorie Horst (d. 2007). They were married 59 years with two children, Connie Mongan and Charles E. Beard, who reside in Mt. Morris. He has four grandchildren, one step grandson, six great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren. Charles has farmed in Mt. Morris Township since the 1940's. Though
he claims he is retired, he actively participates in the farming operation, continuing to run the com-bine during fall harvests. Charles has dedicated his life to service: service to his family, his friends, his neighbors, and the community. He is a 50+ year member of multiple service organizations: Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, Tebala Shrine Temple, the Valley of Freeport Scottish Rite Bodies, the Mt. Morris Lions Club, and the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge. He has been a confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris for 76 years. Charles joined Tebala Shrine in 1957. He has served on various Temple committees and at-tended many Temple events. For many, many years he has faithfully worked during perform-ances of the Tebala Shrine Circus. He has taken great pride helping children and their families by shuttling many children with their parents to the Shriner's Children's Hospital. He was a member of the Tebala Foot Patrol, representing Tebala Shrine in parades, one as far away as California.
Great news from the Arabic Patrol
Long time member Charles C Beard will turn 90 years young July 7th!
The family would like to invite you and your family to his party
and help them celebrate this great day.
(No Gifts, just come and enjoy the evening)

The 38th Annual Illinois High School All Star
Football game will be played on Saturday evening,
July 14, at Bloomington. Tickets will be in the
mail, and I hope that Nobles will be enthusiastic in
their response. We are doing the “Dog and Pony”
shows at various service organizations. Rotary was
presented last week and Kiwanis will be this week.
The Shriners Hospital for Children at Chicago has recently appointed two women who are soliciting pediatri-
cians for patients. Both have had considerable service at Chicago. Don’t forget the kids when you are gift-
ing or providing in your will. Regards, Bill Condon, Donor Representative
Hospital Open House Everyone that attended the Open House at the Chicago Children’s Hospital really had a great time. The tour
of their beautiful facilities really makes you proud to be a Shriner! Having an opportunity to meet doctors &
nurses one on one and hear them talk about research and the great strides they have made in recent years was
extremely rewarding. And of course the Worlds Shortest Parade was a big hit. Thanks to all who went. If
you have never been in to see the hospital, you should begin planning today, to go next year!

Hello from Noble Louie Cowan. This
is a picture taken at the Temple at the
Wednesday night business meeting.
With my plea for a donation to the M.D.A.
"make a muscle' walk, the Nobles filled
my Fez with $140 which the MDA offi-
cers really appreciated. The walk col-
lected over $9000.00 dollars and this will
go toward the research to cure neuro-
logical muscle diseases...with a sincere
thank you from me. I can be reached at
my cell 815-871-4226.
