A TRIP TO THE INVERELL WATER TREATMENT WORKS IS BEING ARRANGED, MEMBERS WILL BE ADVISED.
As our last progressive lunch was so successful and enjoyed by many, it is time to think what you can
do to enable the club to hold one this year.
Please give it some thought.
EDITORS RUMBLINGS February 2019 With the second Crankcase of the year we wish all members health, wealth and happiness. We always hope,
on New Year’s Eve, that the new year will be better than the last in all respects. Somehow the same sort but
different problems pop up every year and we mostly get through.
You might have noticed a glaring omission in the January Crankcase where Phil and Dorothy Myhill were
omitted from the list of surviving Life Members and I have to take some responsibility for this, for I
neglected to check the list supplied, my sincere apologies to Phil and Dorothy.
This month there is good and bad news for people travelling in Queensland. The 2019 road toll was 219, the
lowest in 50 years; on the other hand, the fine for using a mobile phone will increase to $1000 from this
month. This is understandable when you realize one driver was caught watching Netflix on his iPad while
driving last year. Using a mobile phone is now considered more serious than being drunk, drugged or
driving an unregistered, uninsured and unroadworthy vehicle going by the magnitude of the fines involved.
In addition to the punitive increase in fines, the Palaszczuk government introduced it’s own luxury car tax of
10% in July 2019 and increased registration by 3.5% which was double the rate of inflation. With the cost of
registration on Special Interest Vehicles (historic registration) being approximately $250 plus CTP insurance,
one could not afford to register a collection in Queensland. It costs more than twice as much to register a
box trailer in Queensland than one of our historic vehicles in NSW. For this reason, it is important not to
jeopardise our good system by flouting the historic rules
After assuming the Editorship some years ago I have now received my first “Letter to the Editor”. It is in
response to my Rumblings on petol company ownership in Australia, and comes from life long friend and
freelance motoring writer Ross McGown. It is published in this edition and elaborates on my article and will
be of interest to those who give preference to Australian Made products. Because there is no great disparity
in fuel prices, I feel this is something we can all do.
Bob Ausburn
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Hi Bob,
A good read as usual. You have an active club there.
Some comment on your editorial re the oil companies.
I try to support Australian owned businesses wherever possible. There is an immense amount of
1. Lack of knowledge by people about Australian vs foreign owned companies, ie who owns what.
2. A disappointing lack of interest in the topic anyway.
3. Confusion
4. Lack of customer brand loyalty these days.
So it was good to see you sorting it out a bit.
As always in our world things are changing rapidly.
Caltex have ceased their arrangement with Chevron as you say and announced the resurrection of the
Ampol brand,[Given that they always owned it I can't work out why they dropped it, and didn't let the
Caltex name go instead of paying big money for it when they merged. Must've had a timeframe in the
Chevron naming deal].
However, a Canadian firm has already made on offer to buy Caltex. The first was rejected but a second
higher offer has been made. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-26/caltex-8.6-billion-takeover-offer-
from-canadians/11739568
I personally hope the offer would not get past the FIRB. It has some nasty ramifications for the country
should that happen, in my view.
Should it proceed, then we may not see the name Ampol return, and if the new owners did decide to adopt
it anyway, it would be an insult to our intelligence - but perhaps we're not all that intelligent anyway. [As I
spent five enjoyable years working for an Ampol outlet the return of the name, in the right circumstances,
would make me feel warm and fuzzy].
I like to check on the "currency" of Australian ownership. As you say Matilda went to Puma [Swiss owned].
Freedom is expanding their outlets; it was once a local company but now Japanese owned.
Liberty was bought out by Viva, and Viva has the most fuel outlets in Australia now, as they supply both
Shell and Coles and Coles Express fuel outlets. Coles Express itself on the other hand has been sold to a
Dutch company. Viva is an Australian Co.
United Fuel is fully Australian owned and has about 250 outlets. [On our recent trip to Tas couldn't help
noticing that they seem to outnumber all the other brands there. Good!]
There was an attempt by BP to buy the Woolworths Fuel chain. It was rejected by the FIRB, and the chain
was bought by British firm EG Fuels [Euro Garages].
As I said at the beginning, I think there is a lack of interest by most people anyway. People knock our
Woolworths/Coles, never mention IGA, and support German owned Aldi/US owned Costco - I haven't
noticed the latter overseas owned companies donating to bushfire relief, nor committing to any support for
dairy farmers. Checking out their products will show frozen vegetables readily available from Australian
sources are imported from China, Belgium. Poland etc Jams, Honey and other spreads from Britain, Holland,
France - I could keep going on, but I hear people saying our farmers don't get a fair go - while they shop at
Aldi or Costco.
Bottom line - I hope Caltex stays in Australian shareholder's ownership, and the name goes back to Ampol.
There's my rant for the day. Goodnight!
Ross McGown
THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE WANT IT.
“EU will require all new cars to be fitted with speed-limiting technology by 2022.” Utterly absurd rulings
coming out of the EU and accepted by the UK despite Brexit!. By 2022 ALL cars will be speed restricted to
70mph and will have recording devices that will enable automatic ticketing should you break any rules: (so
your Smart car will be as fast as a Ferrari). This must be a bureaucrat’s ultimate wet dream! Total control and
saving 25,000 lives! Don’t laugh at their misfortune, these things have a way of migrating here. What ever
happened to Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection?
SANITY PREVAILS
Germany's Green party attempted to have the country's famous autobahn system limited to 130 km/h
(81 mph), but a parliamentary vote last Thursday overwhelmingly defeated the motion, letting drivers
continue to choose their own speed freely.

INVERELL ANTIQUE MOTOR CLUB RUN TO RURAL WRECKING
19th January, 2020. Tom Horwood went to a lot of effort to make the visit a memorable one for the Club. The Club was let
down by very few members making the effort to attend. Tom has in the museum a large collection of
tractors; the early Internationals start in 1914 through to 1980. I think about 150 tractors are in the museum,
single cylinder up to V8 on to a V12 Belarus. Tom likes his Internationals; he did his apprenticeship at
Inverell Harvester dealership.
His love for the make has not lessened and has most of the American made Inters plus most of the
Australian made or assembled tractors made in Victoria. He has imported tractors from the U S A that were
not sold in Australia, including gas powered. He has number one prototype tractor, only two were made,
one went to the U S A.
At the museum there are many trucks, some cars, many chainsaws, plus most everything collectable. A most
enjoyable morning. Shame you did not attend.

GUYRA LAMB & POTATO FESTIVAL January 25th 2020 Was nice to see so many turn up, with some going up early instead of traveling 20 k in and then do that
again, when it saves time and fuel just to go there. We had 5 cars turn up at the club house and then had
another 4 cars already there. It turned out to be a great day a bit hot but that was because there was a
storm coming. We all hoped it would stay away till we all had a good day and on our way home. I think
everyone made it home safely. Just a happy note on the day, Phillip and Dorothy won an Award in the top
ten and another one for encouragement award. Laurie and I got an award also for the lady bug. It was a
lovely surprise to get this, another one to add to the collection.

Footnote from the Editor:
The Guyra Show and Shine was without the categories of the past and allowed all attending cars to
participate. There was no indication if points were awarded, and appeared to be a popularity vote, without
the Guyra cars being eligible for prizes. As usual the whole main street was lined both sides with a very
interesting mix of vehicles along with a large contingent of ex-army second world war jeeps and trucks. A
very worth while outing for any club.

AUSTRALIA DAY January 26th 2020 It is a rare day that goes completely to plan and Australia Day was no different. With a high probability of
rain, the Australia Day celebrations in Inverell were shifted from Victoria Park to the Town Hall. It must have
been word of mouth because when we finally found out, the hall had many locals either lined up for the
breakfast, or already seated within the hall. With the change of venue the ceremony was 0ver half an hour
late and we could not stay as our plan was to attend the Delungra procession and service at 9.30am.
Suzanne and I were the only ones from our club to drive from Inverell, but were joined by Harry at
Delungra. Along with the drive for Leisure group we formed a procession behind the mounted riders and
fire engines. The local police constable wasted no time checking the trooper’s 1915 Enfield rifle and noting
the serial number. I guess he doesn’t see many weapons in public these days.
With our names and make of car announced as we drove around, we felt like royalty in front of the waving
crowds. I guess the Queen rode in a Jag a number of times. Our breakfast was very welcome at 11am when
the rural fire service got the barbeque going.
It was a good day for celebrating life in Australia with no rain and very little traffic on the route.

WORTHWHILE COMBINATIONS January 29th 2020 The name captures two things that go together, namely; eating and talking. Our car club members are good
at both, especially when done in one place at one time. Laurel and I were introduced to club tradition on
our very first run, back in 1994. The first two subjects to be discussed were
1. Where are we going?
2. Where do we stop for a cuppa?
On Wednesday, 29th January 2020, eight Inverell cars plus two from Glen Innes went to Glen Innes bowling
club Chinese restaurant and it was there that we ate a delicious selection of mains and sweets and of course
the cuppa to follow, and all this time there was talk and talk and camaraderie. Another very enjoyable
outing notched up.
Eaters and talkers included:

COFFEE & CARS 2nd February 2020 It was a nice day to have a cuppa with the crew, 19 turned up, a couple of these turned up late, and it is
better to be late than not turning up at all. We all got in to order as we came in giving the girl our names,
which is easier for them as well as us. David was a bit later than others only because his car was not
behaving itself. It decided to boil, only because David was not sure if he checked the water, but that can
happen to any of us. He also had Shirley in hospital again with a very bad cut on her leg. It was time for
everyone to get what they ordered, then give Phil and Dorothy the awards they got from Guyra. They were
very happy with them. Carolyn got up and said that Laurie and I have been married for 35 years on that day,
well there was someone saying you get less for murder, ha! ha!, I took it as a joke which I know it was . Well
then it was time to say see you later and we all went our own way.

The Big Gulp
The average American citizen will drink 44 gallons of soft drinks this year, and a good many of them will head off to the local 7-Eleven to fill up. In fact, 7-Eleven dispenses 38 million gallons of soda per annum. Why do so many of them wind up at 7-Eleven for a soda? The reason is that 25 percent of Americans live within a mile of one of the stores and they would drive that distance.
