Theholidayseasonisgearingup,andifyourlocalWalmartisanyindica-tion,itwillbealongone.Ofcourse,thegoodnewsisthatitisnolon-ger100degreesoutside,andmyA/C-freeE21iscomfortableagain.Atleastitisuntilwintercomesfull-tilt,andthenthatlittleE21willbeboilinginside.ThoseGermansdefinatelyweren’tmessingaroundwhentheyengineeredthatheater.

AndIwon’tevengettodriveitduringthewinter,anyway.MydadhasgiftedmehisoldChrystlerSebringbecauseI“needasafercarforwinter,andit’sgoingtobeabadone.”Dadsaresweet,andtheycertainlymeanwell,butaChrystlerSebring?!It’ssoul-crushing.Nonetheless,Iwillbeathankful,anddutifuldaughter,anddomybesttodrivealittleBMWfireintotheChrystlerwitheverycurveandslalomintheroad.

And I did! A lot! Even the color!

Ihadreadandheardallthenegativecommentsaboutthe“wimpy”fourcylinderengineandhowitranroughandshook.Let’sputallthattorest.Thatengineisgreat.Accelerationismorethanadequateforfreewayonrampsandpassingathighwayspeeds.AndIaveragedover27mpginmixedcityandfreewaydriving.

Toputthisperformancethinginperspective,mydailydriverisaStage2E92Dinan335ithat’snotquiteasroomyorquietastheE39M5itreplaced.

TheX1isroomy,comfortable,quietandridesquitenicelyonit’srun-flat-tires.Therunflatsdidn’tseemharsh,buttheydidsingabitonCentralExpressway.

Oneofthesurpriseswasfindinganappontheonboardcom-puterthatshowedthetorqueandhorsepoweryouwereusing.Surprise-youdon’tuseasmuchasyouthinkyoudo.

80hpand180torqueisallyouneedaroundtownincludinghighwayon-ramps.60mphusesonlyabout10horsepowerandnotmuchtorque.

Yes,muchmorethanthatwasavailablewhenyouputyourfootinitandthosewhoknowmeknowthatIdid.

All I can say is WOW.

Iwasimpressedwiththegetupandgothatwasreadilyavail-able.Andthe8-speedautomaticwasverysmooth.Abouttheonlywayyoucouldtellitshiftedwastowatchthetach.Withmebeingadedicated3pedalguy,Icouldlivewiththistrans-mission.

Oh,yeah,thehandlingwasalsoveryimpressive.IwouldnothesitatetoputthatX1onthetrack,butClassicBMWwouldprobablygetalittleupsetifIdidbecauseitwastheirX1.

Touring to TaosGeraldWineinger

We took off for Taos, New Mexico on the afternoon of Thursday, Sep-tember 25, 2014, meeting in Decatur, TX. We stopped for a quick meal at a restaurant in Quanah, TX, then proceeded our brisk pace on the back roads to Amarillo.

SinceourTourmeistercouldnotdrivehisM6thistime,hewasdrivinghisBMW2002andhadaprobleminthemorningwiththestarter.HedecidedtoleaveitinAmarilloandthanksgoestoJOforlettinghimdrivehisquickBMW135iformostoftherest of the tour.

WestayedovernightinAmarilloandleftFridaymorningforPaloDuroStatePark.PaloDuroCanyonisthe2ndlargestcan-yonintheU.S.andthesightswerebeautiful.

AfterstoppingatPaloDuroCanyonenjoyingtheviewsandvis-itingtheIndianstylegiftshop,weheadedwestward.Againwetookthebackroadsandenjoyedthebriskpacewithexcellentroadsanddriving.AswedrovethroughAngelFire,whichwasincorporatedin1986,westoppedattheUnitedStates’firstmemorialtoVietnamWarveterans.

TheVietnamVeteransPeaceandBrotherhoodChapelisasoaringwhitestructurepointingtotheskyfromahilljustwestofAngelFire.InsidethesimplemonumentarephotographsofVietnamcasualtiesandashrineofmementosandcandlesleftby visitors.

InTaos,wecheckedintoabeautifullodgeinaveryconve-nientareaofTaos.Wecompletedthedaywithaveryfineca-sualdinneratthedelaTierrainthebeautifulElMonteResort.

OnSaturday,whilesomedecidedtogoshoppinginthein-terestingshopsinTaos,wehadagreattour,a“SpirtedDrive”onawestwardloopoutofTaosontheEnchantedCircle.TheRioGrandeGorgebridge,twelvemilesnorthwestofTaosonUS64,wasabeautifulscenicstop.Whenitwasbuiltinthemid-60s,itwascalledthebridgetonowhere,becausefundingdidn’texisttocontinuetheroadontheotherside.Itisthesec-ondhigheststeeldeckarchbridgeintheUnitedStates.

WestoppedforlunchinTierraArmarillaattheThreeRavensandenjoyedadrumsessiononahandmadedrumbytheorig-inalIndiandesignerandmaker.Thecultureandsightseeingonourstopswasfantastic.ThewindingroutewetooktakesyouthroughsomeofthemostbeautifulareasofNorthCentralNewMexico. DinneronSaturdaywasataveryinterestingoldrestaurantin

downtownTaos,Lamberts,suggestedbysomeofourmem-berswholiveinthearea,theDolans.Itwasabsolutelyexcel-lent.

OnSundaywedrovedowntoSantaFefortheSantaFeCon-corso!

ThenSundayevening,wedepartedSantaFeforTucumcariandstayedthereovernight.Mondaymorning,weheadedbackeastonI-40throughAmarillotopickupthetourmeis-ter’sBMW2002andreturnedtotheDFWarea.

Gerald Wineinger is an active member of the BMW CCA Lonestar Chapter. He and his wife can be found smack in the middle of the pack during chapter touring events, and he can always be counted on for his infectious smile, and laid-back demeanor.

BMW CCA FOUNDATION LAUNCHES CIRCLE OF EXCELLENCE VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Outstanding Volunteers from Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving Safety Program to be Honored

Greer, SC, October 30, 2014 - The BMW Car Club of America (CCA) Foundation Board of Trustees are proud to announce the creation of the Tire Rack Street Survival® Circle of Excellence Volunteer Recognition Program. Made possible by a gift from an anonymous donor to the BMW CCA Foundation Capital Campaign, this unique program will recognize a group of outstanding Street Survival volunteers for their efforts to help promote teen driving safety. The first awards will be presented in January of 2015.

"Without our volunteers, the Street Survival program would not have gotten off the ground,” says Leo Newland, president of the BMW CCA Foundation. "And without the leadership and tireless hard work from these dedicated and talented individuals, we would not have trained over 10,000 students and held 700 schools in the past 12 years. We think it is high time we thank this group of select volunteers in a bigger way."

The award categories will include individuals, chapters and regions from all stakeholders within the BMW CCA, BMW Clubs of Canada, Sports Car Club of America, Porsche Club of America, Audi Club North America and Corvette Club of America. A dedicated Circle of Excellence selection committee will be established after the initial year which will include past recipients that will select future award winners.
