Daniel J. ZimmermanSecretary of the
Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs
Members and Friends of the WVH-King:
Allow me to begin with something you already know – King is a great place where dedicated care-givers provide Veterans and their families top notch care.
Now something you likely don’t know – I have a strong personal connection to King. My mother-in-law and father-in-law both were staff at King. My wife, as a little girl, accompanied her dad on his security rounds. King was her playground and the members her surrogate grandparents. My father-in-law’s final resting place is King.
King holds special significance for me. It is an invigorating place. In my short time as Secretary, I’ve spent a good amount of time at King and I’ll continue to do so. For me, King is therapeutic like it is for so many others. After a long day dealing with Department challenges, my batteries are recharged by interacting with members and care-givers. Such is one of the most rewarding components of my position.
Service above self is a principle that has shaped my adult life. I am honored and also humbled to lead an organization that has that same principle as its guide.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as I possibly can. Please stop me for a chat as you see me wandering the grounds.
See you on the high ground!

HELP WANTED!Welcome Salute Volunteers are NEEDED!
The Welcome Salute is a program you may have heard about which started a few months ago at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. It is a program which offers new members an opportunity to get to know each other, current members, volunteers, and to learn a little bit more about the King campus.
When first coming to King, it is fair to say, one’s impression may be that it is a big place with a lot of people to meet, places to go, and things to become familiar with. The Welcome Salute was initiated to assist with making the move to King an easier transition with a more welcoming environment.
So what is the Welcome Salute all about? Within a couple of weeks of being admitted to the Veterans Home at King, new members will receive an invitation from a current member or volunteer to attend the next program. The program takes place every other Thursday in the Marden Library from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. On the morning of the Welcome Salute, a member or volunteer will come directly to the new member’s room to personally escort them to the Library, so there are no worries for the new member to try to find the location on their own. Coffee and snacks are provided while we go around the room making introductions. Each member is presented with a ribbon honoring their service specific to the branch in which they served. From the Library’s meet and greet the new members are taken on a personalized tour of the campus by a volunteer. The new member is able to direct where they want to go and what they want to see. Once the tour is completed, the volunteer escorts the new member back to their room. If the new member would prefer to skip the tour and go directly to their room, they are able to do that as well.
If you would like to volunteer and become involved, please call Hillary Larson at 715.256.5021.

Brownie was a local German Shepherd dog. He was owned by a young man in King who enlisted the dog in the K-9 Corps. Brownie was blinded in one eye by a Japanese bullet while serving in the South Pacific. He then came home to King and served as a mascot for the veterans from 1944-1949. He marched in parades. Sadly, he died after being hit by a car and was buried in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

Did you know that a smile is contagious? It costs nothing to give, but reaps great rewards for both the receiver and the giver.
A Smile Spreads Good CheerMother Teresa of Calcutta once said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”
It’s amazing that your simple smile can brighten someone’s day in a moment’s notice. Too often we underestimate the power of a smile. Although it may be considered the smallest act of caring and it takes little or no effort on our part, it has the power to turn a life around—in fact more than one. Like the ripple effect of a pebble tossed into a pond, your smile will spread far beyond the first person who receives it. You never know how many people will benefit because you smiled first.
A Smile Benefits The GiverNot only will you enhance someone’s day but you, too, will benefit. When you make a conscience effort to smile throughout your day people will remember you in a positive way.
Just the other day I was over at my parent’s house having coffee with them. When my dad handed me my coffee, he said, “This cup is yours because each time you come over you are always smiling.” The cup that he gave me had a big yellow smiley face on it!
What took me by surprise was that even though I wasn’t aware that I was “always” smiling, my dad seemed to notice. My point is that even if people don’t always verbally acknowledge your smile, they will associate you with what stands out most in their minds.
Have you ever noticed someone who is always smiling? Take a moment and think about how they made you feel. Did that person make a positive or negative first impression? When you were at your last party, was there one person that comes to mind whose smile made him or her stand out?
of aBy: Danielle Cearbaugh
The Ripple Effect People are always watching you, paying attention to how you react to any given situation. That’s why making sure you have a smile on your face throughout the day can make such a difference in your life and the lives of those around you.
Les Giblin—renowned lecturer and author of the well-known book Skill with People, said, “If you’re not using your smile, you’re like a man with a million dollars in the bank and no checkbook.”
Simple Ways to Be Intentional about Smiling • When someone smiles at you, smile back. I always wonder why people don’t smile at me when I smile at them. The more you smile, the easier it gets. • Smile when you answer your phone. People can hear the difference in your voice, and it can produce positive results. • Smiling makes others feel welcome, special, and appreciated. So when you are with your friends, family, and coworkers be aware of your demeanor. • Think positively about yourself and others. Through that mind-set, smiling will come more naturally. • Smiling even reduces stress. Did you know that stress could actually appear on your face? • Be the first one to smile when you walk into a room.
A Few Facts to Remember • 55% of all communication is nonverbal, and a large majority is in facial expressions, according to A. Barbour, author of Louder Than Words. • 72% of people think of those who smile frequently as being more confident and successful. • 86% of people say that they are more likely to strike up conversations with strangers if they are smiling.
Knowing that people will remember you, like you more, and be more comfortable with you in conversation, I challenge you to become intentional using your smile to positively impact the people around you. Make it your goal to become the person who is known for your smile.
The smile you pass on today will have the ripple effect that will spread beyond your family, your friends, and your community. It will improve the outlook of others, and it will help you win the affection and friendship of others.

Spiritual Dryness: Come and Drink
WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column
11
Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14.
During my vacation I visited my home country, Zimbabwe, for three weeks. I was greeted with severe dry weather. I could not believe my eyes to see very little water coming from the tap if it was there; otherwise it was impossible to cope with the dryness. When I visited the rural village I saw cows, sheep, and goats traveling many miles for water. In spite of those long journeys in search for water, sometimes animals had to wait for people to bring water to drink. Nearly all rivers and dams were dry. There was a time I saw cows gather at a well, hoping to see someone coming and dig the well for water. It was a terrible situation.
On the other hand, women and children traveling many miles for water. Oh my God, I had questions which none could answer me. “But Lord when is this going to end, and why are these people positive when facing terrible hardships?”
The turning point to this situation was that many people were going to church, little ones, youth, and adults. Women of Church Associations, and Men Associations could get involved with different activities in church. During the church services nearly everyone was singing and dancing. I was deeply moved by their attitude toward suffering, not having food, water, unemployment, and so forth.
Perhaps as people of different faiths, we can learn from the Bible about giving the benefit of the doubt to others. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” As I was reflecting on my home drought situation in Zimbabwe, I thought it to be the same situation as spiritual dryness. What is the spiritual food of the soul? Spiritual dryness or despair is a lack of spiritual comfort in one’s spiritual life. It is a form of spiritual crisis experienced emotionally as a sense of separation from God or lack of spiritual feeling, especially when suffering the loss of the beloved one, terminal illness, and other sufferings. “He that handles a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusted in the Lord, happy is he.” Proverbs 16:20. By giving the benefit of the doubt, we’re allowing room for the truth to reveal itself over time.
Let us give God the benefit of the doubt; He will not leave us alone. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” It is a gentle reminder that in 2017 we need to ask God to give us Love to bear, to believe, to hope and endure all things.
All in all, let us be encouraged by Thomas Merton’s prayer: “O my God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me ... Therefore, I will trust You always though I may seem to be lost I will not fear, for You are always with me, O my dear God.”

The Library has added several books to its permanent collection.Following are some of those books.
Moscow Rules by Daniel Silva Gabriel Allon finds himself on the way to Russia after the death of a journalist. He is struck by the change in the city of Moscow. No longer the grim, gray city of Soviet times, it is now awash in oil wealth. Power again resides behind the walls of the Kremlin, and critics of the ruling class are ruthlessly silenced. In this Moscow, a new generation of Stalinists is plotting to reclaim an empire lost and to challenge the global dominance of its old enemy, the United States. One such man is Ivan Kharkov, an arms dealer, who is about to deliver Russia’s most sophisticated weapons to al-Qaeda! Allon must learn the time and place of the delivery in order to avert the deadliest terror attacks since 9/11.
Intervention by Robin Cook Over 30 years ago, New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton graduated from college. It has been almost that long since he was in touch with classmates Shawn Daughtry and James O’Rourke. Shawn is now a renowned archeologist and biblical scholar. He makes a spectacular find at a marketplace in Cairo: an ancient medical manuscript, whose contents may vault him to international fame! Shawn’s discovery leads him to Saint Peter’s tomb at the Vatican, where he hopes to unearth a 2000-year-old bone coffin, the contents of which may have earthshaking ecclesiastical and medical implications. The complications arise because former classmate James O’Rourke is now James Cardinal O’Rourke, bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Shawn’s find may jeopardize the very nature of papal infallibility. In an effort to protect his church (and his own political ambitions), James turns to Jack to help safeguard an explosive secret.
Prey by Linda Howard Three years ago, Angie Powell’s thriving hunting business took a hit when handsome Iraq war vet Dare Callahan started up a hunting business of his own. With her livelihood siphoned away, Angie is forced to close up shop. Her plan is to leave town, but first she organizes one last trip into the wilderness; she has a client who wants to bag a black bear. The trip is interrupted when Angie witnesses a cold-blooded murder, then finds herself with a loaded gun pointed at her. Dare, camping nearby, hears the gunshots and comes to investigate. Angie and Dare end up facing a blinding storm, their own hard feelings towards each other, then a growing attraction. All the while, they are stalked by a desperate killer, and a ferocious 500-pound bear!
Private Paris by James Patterson and Mark Sullivan Jack Morgan decides to finish up his European business trip with a stop in Paris. Jack is the founder and owner of “Private” – a renowned global
security investigative agency. He stops by their Paris office for a quick hello. But a frantic client asks Jack to track down his wayward granddaughter, who is on the run from a brutal drug dealer. Next, several members of France’s cultural elite are found murdered. Each murder scene contains a mysterious graffiti tag which results in the French authorities asking for help from Jack and his elite Private team.
Lights Out Tonight by Mary Jane Clark If you are already a Mary Clark fan, you will not be disappointed. In this latest novel, “you will enter the mind of a sociopath. It’s a place where the rules don’t apply. Where anything is fair game. And where murder is the ultimate means to an end.” Film and theater critic Caroline Enright looks forward to her trip to a theater festival in the Berkshire Mountains. But soon she finds herself wrapped up in the mystery of a missing world-famous actress, and the deaths of 2 of her stepdaughter’s friends. “With a Mary Jane Clark novel, every word is a clue.”
Hillbilly Elegy by J. D. Vance J. D. Vance offers a probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. The author’s personal experience of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town offers the source material for this memoir. Vance’s grandparents moved from Kentucky’s Appalachia region north to Ohio after WWII. Their hope was to escape the dreadful poverty around them. They succeeded in raising a middle-class family, and even had one grandchild graduate from Yale Law School. However, much of the family never fully escaped the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America.
Johnny Carson by Henry Bushkin Author Henry Bushkin was Johnny Carson’s lawyer and best friend, and so this is a very insightful biography. Johnny, who hosted The Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992, was charming and hilarious onstage, but could be moody and difficult off-camera. Bushkin reveals that, although Johnny was a voracious womanizer, he had a need to always be married. He loathed small talk, but excelled at it! One of Bushkin’s first assignments as Johnny’s lawyer was to help the star break into a posh Manhattan apartment to gather evidence of his wife’s infidelity! You will enjoy reading about Carson’s many capers, some of which involve other big-name stars such as Dean Martin and Ronald Reagan.
