Novena The Novena Campus, Singapore Nanyang Technical University, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine The vision for the new Nanyang Technical University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine is to create a knowledge driven ecosystem – a vibrant flexible architectural and human framework for medial education and translational research that will be unique to Singapore. It will promote a comprehensive campus environment creating a world-class institution in this global “Garden City” a responsive to the tropical climate and linking the intellectual and creative network of human resources – the students, faculty, clinicians and researchers – are key organizational influences. The dual inspirations of nature and human connection gave birth to the design concept. Design Philosophy - One Campus The new campus bridges two sites, Novena and Yunan. Each site is unique and significantly different, yet the new medical schools are strongly connected through a common mission, a shared design philosophy and a responsive dialogue with their place. The Novena site is situated in a dense urban context surrounded by tall residential towers, the growing Tan Tock Seng Hospital and shares the site with the historic Building 107. The medical school will become the gateway and easterly anchor to the growing medical campus surrounding the hospital. Quite oppositely, the Yunan site on the edge of the established Nanyang Technical University Campus sits outside of the campus loop road and is surrounded by dense planting. It engages and connects with existing buildings and student paths. Students will move between the two campuses during the five-year program. The designs establishes common organizational strategies, familiar learning environments and core teaching principles that will promote a emotional connection between the campuses as key to the LKC-SoM brand. The design fulfills the challenge to proved two buildings on distant campuses while ensuring a shared experience for students, faculty, staff and researchers. The buildings respond uniquely and authentically. Their massing is dramatically distinct: Novena, a high-rise and Yunan, a horizontal mass. Despite these distinguishing facts, they are one institution. As the primary strategy to bind the schools as indelibly linked parts of a single institution, both designs overlay a key set of design principles inspired by the climate, the program, and the missions of the institution; connectivity with context, interconnectivities within each building – Visual> Academic>Research> Social, program stacking approach, living learning cores, sky gardens, and robust strategies for day lighting. Through these similarities they establish a brand that identifies LKC SoM as a scholarly center for academia and brands these new schools as hubs for rich interactive student life. Novena and Yunan will be memorable places in their own right. And they are linked by a shared experience of excellence and innovation in educational pedagogy and recognized as responsible, energy efficient and sustainable interventions in their environments.
