I would like to thank all of the Lions Clubs and Lion members who have made a donation to LCIF to go towards the disaster relief funds. Many places as you know are still in disrepair and are in great need of these funds. Areas in Texas are still underwater, as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the devastation in Mexico only heightens the need for donations. If you or your club has not made a donation as of yet, please consider doing so. You can send it directly to LCIF or to our district treasurer PCC Mark Kusma. If you send it directly to LCIF, if you will, please notify him or myself of the amount sent so that it can be added to the tally sheet. In addition to monetary needs, the state council of governors is still working on gathering items to be shipped directly to Lions in the central-eastern area of Texas. Each governor was asked to secure a collection site until the shipping arrangements can be made. The collection site for our district is at my church’s gymnasium located at 1201 Church Street, Moscow. You can even ask your local library, police or fire department to have a collection box for your club. There is a donation box currently at the North Pocono Library. Again, I thank each of you with a grateful heart for all that you are doing to help in this endeavor. Besides working towards the collections for our relief efforts, I have provided vision eye screenings for 3 different events. I have also been quite busy with 14 visitations where I hope that club members were as blessed as I have been. To date, I have presented 16 Heart of a Lion awards. There are only 7 clubs that have not provided me with a recipient and it is my hope that I do receive one for their governor’s visit: Dunmore, Jermyn, Montrose, Moosic, Ransom, Stone Bridge/Susquehanna and Taylor. I would be very grateful if these clubs could please participate, thank you! Should any club or member need help with a project; please contact me and/or your zone chairperson, they are very willing to lend a helping hand. Keep your eyes open for future information as the zone chairs are in the process of arranging zone socials. I hope that you enjoy this copy of the newsletter, make sure you take a look at “For the good of the district”! If you or your club would like to submit an article, pictures, etc. please forward it via email to me. Thank you! Yours In Service and Friendship, DG Cathy [email protected] Cell: 570-504-6261 (texting is acceptable)

OPEN DISTRICT POSITION

It is with great sadness that I am coming to you with a need for the district position of Treasurer. PCC Mark Kusma has submitted his resignation as of December 15, 2017 as the District Treasurer. His resignation is due to additional obligations in his life and only so many hours in a day. I wish PCC Mark, all of the best in his endeavors and to respectfully thank him for taking on the position during a very difficult time in our district and his willingness to serve our district.

Duties of Cabinet Treasurer Please note that duties specific to the secretary are indicated with an (S) behind the text, and duties specific to the treasurer are indicated with a (T) after the text. If you are serving as both secretary and treasurer in one combined position, both apply to you. If no S or T appears, the information is pertinent and useful to both officers. Official actions of the cabinet secretary and treasurer are under the supervision of the district governor. The specific duties are to: • Collect the stipulated membership dues from the clubs in the district. (Note – the Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer may run an MMR report in MyLCI, which may be saved electronically and forwarded in the same manner.) (T). • Deposit funds in such bank or banks as are designated by the cabinet (T). • Disburse those funds only upon the authorization of the cabinet (T). • Obtain bond for the faithful discharge of the duties in an amount set by the Cabinet (T). • Submit a semi-annual financial report and such other special reports to the cabinet (T). • Submit all the books and accounts for audit whenever required by the cabinet (T). • Place in the hands of the successor all monies and records, financial and otherwise, that pertain to the office of cabinet secretary and treasurer, immediately following the end of the fiscal year (T). Please contact me if you are interested in this position; and please note that PCC Mark has offered to train you in the position. Thank you, DG Cathy

Change of the season greetings Lions and Leos.

One thing will never change though. Where there is a need there is a Lion, or Leo. I realize this was a

phrase coined by Lions a few years back, but it could not be more evident and current than it is today.

We don’t have to look far to see people here locally, across the country and around the world that are

truly in dire need of some Lions help. As one Lion we can only have a certain amount of impact. But

fellow Lion we are 1.4 MILLION strong. Because of that number, Lions have been a part of the United

Nations since its inception. With Lions input some State and Federal laws have been written or

changed. Lions have cured River Blindness and along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

have purchased millions of measles inoculations for children in third world countries. We are a major

supporter of Leader Dogs for the Blind and have developed camps all over America for blind or

disabled children and adults like our own Beacon Lodge. In fact three Lions Clubs in Pennsylvania

are in the top 25 in the world in donations to Leader Dogs for the Blind. I am very proud of our own

Eynon-Archbald Lions Club which is now number 4 in the world. Lions have been a part of recovery

and rebuilding where ever there have been disasters around the planet. LCIF has given grants of

100,000.00 to both the Texas and Florida recovery efforts recently and I’m sure Puerto Rico will also

be the beneficiary of a grant, if they have not yet at the time of this letter. Some of you may question

my need to write all this when it is already common knowledge. Well my friend, some Lions may not

be aware of all that is charitably and freely accomplished by our Lions. Especially our new members

may underestimate the power of a single Lion to be a part of righting a terrible situation half of the

way around the globe. How many people have been affected by the knowledge accrued by a

recipient of a Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Research grant? How many children have had their future

improved by our Kidsight Vision screening? We will never be conscious of all the people whose lives

have been improved or put back together because of the dedication of Lions and Leos, and the

service and care that we so easily give. I realize that many clubs are deeply imbedded in their own

community, and I thank you for that service, but we as a whole are so much more than that. Yes, we

are local, but we are also a district, a state and a worldwide organization. Isn’t it wonderful to be a

part of a world changing as well as a neighborhood group of individuals? I believe with all that is

within me, that if more people saw the entire picture of who we are they would want to join us as we

serve.

Enjoy the change in the weather and the natural beauty that we are blessed to witness as the fall

season comes into all of its full colorful glory. Happily in service, and I hope to see you at our next

cabinet meeting. VDG Bill

INFORMATION FROM DISTRICT CHAIRS

MAKING HALLOWEEN EASIER FOR DIABETIC CHILDREN

If you have a diabetic child, you know how challenging holidays can be, especially Halloween!

There is a wonderful website (AsweetLife.org) written by parents that has a realistic "bunch" of

information that is child tested.

Some thoughts are to substitute - toys, sugar free candy, coins- for some of the highest sugar items

and allow your child to have some of the rest. It can be parceled out, used for sugar lows, or left in a

big bowl on the counter for the "Halloween Fairy". During the night the Fairy takes the excess candy

and leaves a special toy you had picked out earlier. Or you can "buy back “some of the really bad

candy at 10 cents an item and let the child choose what to sell and what to buy with his new money.

Donate the candy to the senior center, food pantry, or hospital.

Having the party at your house also allows you to control the menu and make it more about the

costumes, games, and friends. But we all know how much work that is!!!

So just relax and enjoy the great fun of the holiday. And don't forget the "tricks"! I hope you can use

some of these ideas. Please let me know if you have any ideas to share for the November newsletter

at [email protected]. Thanks, Judy

For the good of the district 14h

In July District Governor Cathy Metschulat and husband VDG Bill, along with many of her class of District Governors and Lions from around the state were in attendance in Harrisburg for a very special assembly of the state lawmakers. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the State Senate met in their chambers and with state Lions present, each body passed a resolution to honor our 100 years of service, proclaiming October 2017 “Pennsylvania Lions Month”. Be proud Lions, and tell everyone. This is a great honor!
