Duayne Malewicki is in his eleventh year as the director of the NSCC. A native of Winona, MN, Duayne graduated from Winona
State with a B.A. in Music and English in 1958 and an M.S. in Music Education in 1963. Duayne taught in Mabel, MN, Virginia,
MN, and the Osseo Area Schools (District 279)
While in Osseo, he helped organize a scholarship fund performing group called the Wastebasket Revue with teachers, administrators,
and staff in the Osseo Schools. 2014 will mark its 48th year of scholarship fund performance, with over a million dollars awarded in
scholarships.
Duayne organized and directed the District 279 Children’s Select Chorus from 1967 to his retirement in 1993. He received the
Superintendent’s Award for “Outstanding Achievement and Dedication to Education” as well as the Brooklyn Park Lions’ award for
“Citizen of the Year.” He has been named to the Minnesota Music Educators Hall of Fame. He continues to be active as a music
adjudicator for local and state music contests.
The North Suburban Concert Chorale (NSCC) performs with the North Suburban Concert Band (NSCB) annually at its Christmas
Concerts. It was originally organized in 1989 by then-NSCB-director Michael Halstenson. Bruce Phelps, Anoka H.S. choir direc-
tor, took over the baton for several years. He was followed by the current director, Duayne Malewicki.
The Chorale attracts singers, ranging from high school age to senior citizens, from church and community choirs in the north and
west suburbs. The non-auditioned group is currently limited to 118 singers. The Chorale rehearses for seven weeks prior to these
performances.
