Client / Patient Outcomes
• No clear pathway for EDS / HSD patients
• Fragmented, single body part care rather than holistic
• Frustration, disbelieved, lack of confidence
• Medical profession displays lack of understanding
• Over cautious or hands off approach
• Misdiagnosis is common (fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, laziness, fabricated illness, depression, rheumatism)
• Misconceptions – hypermobility does not mean a hypermobility syndrome, low Beighton score does not mean no hypermobility
Ref: Understanding Hypermobility, Claire Smith
“No other disease in the history of modern medicine has been neglected in such a way
as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome”Professor Rodney Grahame

Emotional / Psychological Impact
• “Anxiety disorders and other psychological concerns are present to higher degrees in hEDS/HSD than other conditions” Hakim, 2018
• “Co-morbidities may give rise to an anxious state. They may manifest as symptoms akin to anxiety” Hakim, 2018
• Experience of interactions with professionals in Health Care System
Movement Therapy & EDS / HSD Wellbeing
• Unique to the individual.
• Physical symptoms: chronic pain, joint instability, lack of fine motor control,
subluxations/dislocations, stiffness and yet flexibility, headaches, flat feet, impaired
proprioception and body awareness.
• Emotional and psychological: anxiety, tension, stress, fear of movement, lack of
confidence and a feeling of isolation.

Things I hear from new clients…
• The pain is part of life
• I’ve come to live with my pain now
• I used to be able to do that
• I can’t do that because of my pain
• I don’t like taking pain medication
• I manage
• It’s normal to feel like this
• I’d love to but I can’t
• I’m not sure I can do that anymore
• I was too tired to do my exercises
• I’m scared I’m going to hurt my back / shoulder / hip
… their feedback can become this
“It is my physiotherapy and
it keeps me pain free. If I
miss it for more than a few
weeks the pain cycle starts
up again.” Dena
“It means strength and
togetherness to me with
EDS.” Jen
“It gives me awareness and control.” Emma
“I was scared at first but I
now look forward to it. It
leaves me energised and
optimistic.” Gillian
“It gives me strength and
stability. My body feels
amazing and connected
after class.” Nicole

Henry’s story
“The blend of mindful and focused movement is allowing me to listen to
my body again. In just two sessions, through visualisation, along with
careful use of the body, I am very encouraged by how much I am already
able to release the tension and bracing that has become such a common
daily feature for me”
Henry, hEDS client & Zebra Club Member
Small Steps
• Everything counts
• Progress not perfection
• Not performing an exercise
• Moving with awareness
• Small physical step is a huge emotional step
• Self-awareness, self-belief
• Confidence, inner strength, resilience
• Pacing is essential
• Research: Exercise is good for the body and mind
• The approach to the ‘exercise’ is key

The Nervous System
• We all have the inbuilt software to move well.
• We all have the inbuilt software to move well.
• We just need to tap into it the right way.
How can Movement help?
“Those with HSD and hEDS need to try to retrain or increase their muscle strength and tone as much as possible in order that their muscles can compensate for the effects of defective connective tissue in other supporting structures such as ligaments”
Understanding hEDs & HSD, Claire Smith
“70% of surveyed adults with EDS or HSD reported having chronic pain before the age of 20”
EDS awareness, 2016 survey results
“The fear of movement should be assessed and managed, and is associated with pain and fatigue”
Celletti et al 2013
